The referee who led European officiating for over a decade leaves the stage at a place definitely worthy of his farewell: the FIFA World Cup Final.

However, I would like to outline, from my own perspective, a profile of the Slovenian referee through an analysis that is probably subjective, and should therefore be viewed as such, rather than as a universal assessment.
I believe it is fair to say that Vinčić's international career as a top-level UEFA referee can be divided into two distinct phases: the Vinčić before, and the Vinčić after. Let me explain what I mean, once again stressing that this is merely my personal perspective, based on years of observing his performances and overall development.
Personally, I admired the first version of Vinčić more. At that stage, he stood out for his remarkable strictness and officiated matches with a highly decisive approach. Later on, particularly as he reached full maturity and established himself as an elite referee following his promotion from UEFA Category 1 to the Elite category, I felt that his style gradually evolved.
This is not meant as criticism, but simply as an observation from my point of view. In my opinion, he became more inclined to adapt himself to the match, which, unfortunately, is something that modern refereeing increasingly seems to demand from officials in general, rather than the match adapting to the referee personality and authority, today trend often expects the referee to adapt to the nature of the game.
Of course, this does not diminish the outstanding technical ability that Vinčić consistently displayed throughout his career. Nevertheless, there was a noticeable transformation in his refereeing style. Perhaps it was not dramatic, but for those who had followed him since his early international years, it was certainly significant.
From that point onward, one prestigious appointment followed another, and everything he achieved was unquestionably deserved.
Even so, I sometimes wonder whether, had the "Category 1 Vinčić" remained the same Slavko Vinčić throughout his career, his path at the very highest level might have unfolded differently. By "differently," however, I don't necessarily mean more successfully, quite possibly the contrary.
In the end, I believe that everyone shapes their own destiny, and in my view, the Slovenian referee also demonstrated considerable intelligence by embracing that evolution.
Another very interesting point for reflection, in my opinion, is the comparison that, at least from a domestic perspective, cannot be avoided. It is probably discussed more in Slovenia than elsewhere, except among true refereeing enthusiasts, and that is the comparison with Damir Skomina, who of course reached the highest UEFA honors before his compatriot.
We can undoubtedly say that, with the career of the Maribor referee now having come to an end, Vinčić has surpassed his distinguished predecessor, above all thanks to officiating the FIFA World Cup Final. It is also worth emphasizing how Slovenia, certainly a country with a degree of political influence within European football but regardless of that, has been able to produce two referees of such extraordinary caliber almost one after the other.
If we were to look at other European nations of a similar refereeing stature to Slovenia, we could safely say that the situation is often quite different, sometimes significantly so. However, the quality of these two Slovenian referees is undeniable and evident for everyone to see.
With Skomina first and now Vinčić, whoever follows will inevitably feel the weight of that legacy, and reaching the same level will be an enormous challenge. The Slovenian referee leaves behind a remarkable inheritance, but my personal view is that every referee has his own unique style. It is not really appropriate to compare a referee directly with a distinguished predecessor from the same country when what truly matters is understanding each official's own qualities, personality, approach, and overall refereeing philosophy.
Time will tell whether Slovenia will eventually produce a third refereeing master. It will certainly be extremely difficult, but by no means impossible.
For now, we simply wish the retired referee a bright and fulfilling future. It will be fascinating to see what comes next for him.
A role within UEFA is certainly a possibility. If that were to happen, it will be interesting to see how it might fit alongside his fellow Slovenian, Vladimir Šajn, perhaps even through a succession between the two, or why not, by adding another experienced figure to UEFA refereeing structure.
One thing seems certain: Vinčić has the knowledge, experience, and credibility to make a highly valuable contribution wherever his next chapter takes him.
Hvala za vse, Slavko!

I think that all members of the referee committee of UEFA and FIFA should be Slovenians and Italians, and all referees of the UEFA Elite category should be exclusively from Slovenia and Italy.
ReplyDeletelikely incapable of writing sensible articles. With his experience, Vincin is certainly an asset to the committee.
DeleteI thought the same. Maybe Vinčič wants to stay out of refereeing matters and focus on his family or his business, but him replacing Sajn in UEFA RefCom would feel like a natural step, the latter now can retire in peace after decades in the committee and having fulfilled pretty much every professional goal as a referee manager (hats off, very few countries have punched above their weight in refereeing matters recently as much as SVN)
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with you.. I love Slovenia, but Ceferin has a bit to do with that.. It's enough if you look at before and after Ceferin..
DeleteFirst, thanks for this top ARTICLE, which I will ad: finisih carrer with very good officiated World Cup final!
ReplyDeleteSecond, yes he can be ideal option for Uefa RefCom when Sajn retire, but its question is he interested in that, due to professional buisness! On example, Skomina who have also high personality and would also suited well at UefaRef Com, told multiple times that he do not have any interest to be part of organizations as Observer,or at some positions! So we will see! Also, it will be very interesting who will be new UEFA Referee boss!
