  4. 22' : 1st YC for reckless tackle

  5. Good offside by AR1 in 26'

    ReplyDelete
  6. So many holding and pushing from Costa Rica defenders in their PK area.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Missed handball / PK by ref and VAR around 33rd min against Costa Rica. Hard to see but: Crucial mistake anyway.

    1. If I have in mind the same situation, the handball occurred close to AR1, not in the penalty area.

      Delete
    2. i didnt see any handball either

      Delete
    3. Yes it was nowhere close to the penalty box!

      Delete
    4. it was a blatant handball by SRB right in the face of AR1. terrible miss b/c it resulted in a soft call in favor of SRB.

    5. Missed penalty...
Are we watching the same match?

  9. What a mistake from AR1. Wrong offside, and he didn't wait for VAR. It would be fantastic goal.

    1. terrible offsides call. with VAR the AR's are supposed leave the flag down if it is at all close...like that!

      Delete
    2. I think Navas would have made the save...indeed he did, right?

      Delete
    3. It was flagged after the keeper caught it, so they did wait.

      Delete
    4. that maybe was my mistake...it seemed to me the flag went up as the attacker hit the ball...before the save. if he did wait, that makes me feel a bit better about this crew.

      Delete
  10. 41st min. Wrong offside call against Serbia. Diedhiou can be happy that the goalie reacted so well...

    1. Will VAR ne able to correct that call if the ball went into the goal?

      Delete
    2. Offside was flagged after Navas caught the ball. Goal would have counted because they correctly waited for the outcome of the situation.

      Delete
    3. I believe yes. The call would came after he goal is scored.

  11. 45 mistake to not give yc IMO

  12. Missed clear YC for blatant pulling.

    1. Then didn't give advantage for Serbia. Bad last 5 mins of 1st half for refs.

      Delete
    2. Playing advantage seems to be his weakness... He whistled almost everything as foul

      Delete
  13. 1st half the worst so far concerning ref in that tournament. Diedhiou with indifferent body language, nervous and with serious mistakes. Disappointing.

    1. There were no serious mistakes... There weren't any big Key match incidents so no question of crucial mistakes... But yes overall he is appearing slightly weak and struggling!

      Delete
    2. totally agreed. poor officiating. clearly the ref team is not comfortable and not communicating effectively with each other.

      Delete
    3. Agree with Soham. His performance wasn't optimal but far away from bad. In 2014 we would have been really happy with his performance ;)
Let's see how he does in second half.

      Delete
    4. Disagree. Overall good performance by Senegalese ref. I don’t know where you saw nervosity from whistle man.

      Delete
    5. The occassion has probably got to him and he looks a bit nervous too!

      Delete
    6. You are to harsh, this is far away from poor officiating.
      Which big mistakes referee made?

      Delete
    7. I agree w/ Benoit and DrMr I think you guys are exaggerating. Was it a perfect first half? No. But it wasn’t terrible.

      Delete
    8. there were no 'match critical' mistakes, but as the man in the middle, any mistake is a big one...especially in the WC.

      Delete
    9. Diedhiou always looks nervous, this is just how he always enters the pitch, like eg Harald Lechner or maybe Howard Webb at some points in his career.
I think he's been okay so far.

      Delete
    10. Agree. Where do you see poor refereeing here?? Come on! And we all know that missed YC at the end of first half is only consequence of commitee wishes about disciplinary control.

      Delete
    11. Diedhiou just gives an impression that he is a bit weak and of course he is slightly nervous... But as I said overall performance is very acceptable and no major issues till now!

      Delete
    12. the blatant missed handball is my issue with this crew...they showed the replay twice and it was crystal clear that SRB extended his arm and brought the ball down with his bicep.

    3. totally agree...he is righting the ship very quickly in this half!

      Delete
    4. really the poor 5' or so in the first half was due to his AR1 mostly...

  18. So many blatant holdings in PK area from Costa Rica... For something like that Ricci gave PK last night.

  20. Much better 2nd half so far. About the mistakes in 1st half see above.

  21. Good Diedhiou overall... Small things to work on but no major problems in a moderate game... I think he makes a good case for a second appointment in group stage!

    1. I agree, he has performed quite well this half. As I said earlier the poor 5' or so in the first half was mostly immediately in front of his AR1.

    2. Fully agreed, very good by Tessema Wayesa, prevention that maybe stopped a RC.

      Delete
    3. Well done by Tessema there... This is why fourth official experiences in World Cup become so valuable in a referee's development... Well done!

      Delete
    4. Did anyone catch CRC's #9 Colindres slapping his opponent in the melee on the touchline? He was almost right behind the referee when it happened.

  26. Atleast Matic deserved YC.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Now VAR review for Prijovic hiting CRC player.

    ReplyDelete
  28. YC following a VAR review, RC was possible.
Very borderline! RC would have been justified but...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. agree...he got him with just a couple of fingers...RC would have been justified, but a bit excessive...call it an 'orange' card!

      Delete
    2. Typically YC because of commitee wishes. Very bordeline but not clearly violent kick. Decision should be supportable.

      Delete
    3. I'm happy with YC there

      Delete
  29. what an ending we have here...I think a good YC in the end though

    ReplyDelete
  30. Red card that imo. Totally unjustified hit in the face

    ReplyDelete
  31. That was a RC without any doubt. How can he rewatch that and then give only yellow??? A mystery. So crucial mistake in the end.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Stop to say words as you should be god of refereeing. Here no clear violence. And advices by refs committee tend to give YC here. Orange one.

      Delete
    2. by the book it was a possible RC, but my feeling was a YC was the most appropriate in the end.

      Delete
    3. see Benoit's comment...definitely orange!

      Delete
    4. Never a crucial mistake in my eyes!

      Delete
    5. Agree...the closest to a crucial mistake was the missed handling in the first half that ended up resulting in a dangerous DFK for SRB.

      Delete
  32. VC review. Should have been a straight RC. This will have consequences for Diedhiou, maybe no more games to follow. I have to say, good job by Turpin as a VAR.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think YC is wrong... RC would be excessive there!

      Delete
    2. I think the 'consequences' will be on the positive side...the team has a few things to work on, but i think he got the YC at the end correct.

      Delete
    3. This was not a violent conduct, and not "hit in the face". He got him with top of the fingers while he was accelerating. YC was the good call.

      Delete
  33. Two VAR checks in the additional time. I was missing the hand-to- ear signal on both occasions. He just stopped the restart, but did not make clear, why.
Also the communication from the broadcast to the viewers was not optimal in the first case.

On the decisions: I expected YC for Matic and the team official sent off, but no clear mistakes to not do that.
Second decision was indeed borderline, correct to do an OFR and just supportable to only give YC IMO.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I didn't see the hand to ear either...could have been more clear for the viewers for sure! Announcers were a bit confused and confusing as well.

      Delete
    2. Hand-to-ear signal has been done away with as far as I can recall... Diedhiou clearly signalled to his whistle and it was explained to teams that means VAR check in progress, wait for the restart! So the process was apparently alright!

      Delete
    3. Well said! Agree 100%.
Anyway an okay game by him. Little bit unclear line of fouls and clearly not so great application of advantage rule. But super decision before the Serbian goal.
I would mark his performance around 8,2. (I think Matic should have got a yellow in the end)

      Delete
  34. IMO, a good performance from Diedhiou. YC is not only supportable for me, but totally correct. It is not a VC nor excessive force was used as I see it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Smart ref give 3min. add time, and avoid such scenes.
Matić must be cautioned for unsp.beh.
Prijović RC for hiting, CRC player YC for pulling And game restart with DFK for SRB. Before that average performance in a normal match. 1 more non-interesting match for ref in the 3rd round and he must be happy.
Ricci and Marciniak are the best so far.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think with two highly questionable penalty incidents with one certainly incorrect and then yelling at a player after making a wrong decision himself, Marciniak's performance was anything but best! :)

      Delete
    2. Glad to see someone agrees, I feared my opinion of him was way too biased. But I rewatched the penalty given again and for it's not one.

      Delete
  36. Solid performance with a handful mistakes by Diedhiou. I can support the YC as it seemed to me it wasn't a fully intentional hit - at least not like and ellbow check. Would have said Matić deserved a YC for starting that fight. Kudos to Tessema Weyesa there, he's not the biggest and really threw himself in there.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Fully deserved victory for Serbia!
Overall very good Diedhiou. Very good solved some problems at the and of the match. YC for Prijovic I think supportable - no VC IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Good performance:
    - YC for Prijović after an on-field review is acceptable if not even preferable - Serbian was held, he tried to make himself free
    - Great play-on call when one of the Serbians fell creating the contact with defender in the box (87')
    - Good prevention at set pieces, good body language
    - Missed YCs for holding (45') and stamp (53')
    - Some problems with advantage

    1. Thank you very much. I stick to my opinion, although I‘m not in the majority: VC and RC. Only intention was to hit the opponent.

      Delete
    2. This is always YC for FIFA, even in UEFA it's not 100% RC.

You should remember Mažić's YC in Confederations cup final for Chile player. It was harded foul, elbow, not hand... and it was YC!
Guess what, FIFA evaluated ut as a good decision.

      Delete
    3. Not enough intensity for violent conduct - therefore YC.

      Delete
    4. Diedhiou shows YC. OK for me. But: why Diedhiou didn't restart the game with a FK?

      Delete
    5. Hitting someone in the face is VC. If the ''intensity'' is not enough for you then you mean it's negligeable. Clear red card in both videos.

      Delete
  40. On 12 August 2017, Kaká received a red card after a VAR review for play fighting with Aurelien Collin. On 17 June 2018, Aleksandar Prijovic swatted Johnny Acosta in the face, which resulted in only a yellow card for Prijovic after review. If the Kaka incident sets a precedence that a hand to the face is a red card offense, regardless of intent. Why did Malang Diedhiou issue yellow instead of red?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That strict "Hand to the face = RC" guideline is only used in MSL in the USA as far as I know. FIFA has other guidelines. But I'm with you, I would have also prefered RC today.

      Delete
  41. So no call for the hand ball? Disgraceful.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Very simple analysis: Overall good, VAR intervention justified, outcome acceptable.

BUT: This was obviously the very first WC 2018 match where the ref was not fully in control, did not stand above the things. He did not keep the helicopter perspective up, lacked in sovereignty in the last moments. Therefor, I am sure we will not see him again.
