  3. A few interesting situations from NEWCASTLE UNITED vs LIVERPOOL FC, refereed by Andre Marriner yesterday evening.

    9' - penalty appeal LIV
    => https://streamable.com/4ezo0

    13' - was there a foul by Mane before 0-1?
    => https://streamable.com/x7lzw

    20' - DOGSO, advantage, goal, but subsequent YC not given.
    => https://streamable.com/oxiyb

    90+2' - Milner committs two bookable offences in the same situation, however Marriner only gives one YC.
    => https://streamable.com/dlsya

    A few general remarks from this game: I must say that I was simply disappointed by Andre Marriner yesterday. Absolutely passive during the game, during verbal warnings, body language was non-existent. What definitely struck me the most was his fitness: it was already mentioned last week (IIRC it was Jackson, who pointed it out) but Marriner walked more during the game than he did run: he was simply too far away from play during the entire game.

    On the DOGSO situation: I think the reason why he issued no YC is because he completely missed the incident. If you watch the clip closely, you can see that Marriner is:
    a) too far away from the incident
    b) not even reacting at all at the handball.
    Awarding the YC after the goal is absolutely mandatory. If the goal didn't go in, Marriner would have missed a pretty blatant DOGSO+RC situation.

    Same goes for the two bookable offences for Milner: both fouls for me are a mandatory YC, so Milner should have been sent off here (similar to Çakir back in NIR-HUN in 2015).

    Conclusion: pretty much a disappointing performance by Andre Marriner, he was extremely lucky that his calls and himself were respected during the entire game.

    1. Also to add the non-existent foul he awarded at 2-2, Liverpool scoring for 2-3 from the resulting free-kick.

    2. For this if you watch the play well enough you will see there was persistent holding b4 he inadvently fell without contact.. So I feel it's because of all that he gave the free kick

  4. We have said it here times without numbers that these referees absolutely do not have motivation anymore and what fears me most is that it's cripping into international referees and that's because Mike Riley allows it. For instance look at Craig Pawson yesterday although he got the two red cards yesterday he got the rest horribly wrong because he strolls and jugs hardly sprints and was way far from play.

    1. i am very concerned about the quality of english refereeing. Pawson's performance was pathetic. He got all the decisions wrong apart from the two red cards. Marriner the same. English refs lack motivation as whatever they do week in week out they will continue to ref.I was watching live Jon Moss a month ago in Southampton. He managed to sprint two or three the whole pitch and the rest of time he was just walking...Unacceptable considering the amount of money they earn in premier league.

  5. A not convincing first half by Daniele Chiffi in Napoli against Caligari.Solid foul detecion but in my opinion a penalty missed because of a reckless elbow challenge by a Caligari defender but no VAR intervention.One missed offside in a normal and fair game.

    1. A challenging second half by Daniele Chiffi in Napoli against Caligari.Sometimes too petty foul detecion,four correct YCs given and a crystal clear correct disallowed goal by AR2.His whistles were always the same in volume and advantaged were not given and even not dislplayed.The crucial decision was the OFR at 90+5' and the resulting penalty for Napoli for a handball.In my opinion a very, very controversial decision to recommend a OFR.The arm was in a natural position and the player has turned around.I honestly can see no intentionally defense by the player.Very difficult situation for Chiffi! In 90+8' a RC probably for referee insulting.

    1. Thanks for the clip. In case the ball hit the arm, goal should be disallowed as UEFA would have asked the referees to follow 2019-20 LotG.

      I watched the 2H, which was unremarkable for Don Robertson. He just did his job, cautioning reckless / SPA / lack of respect fouls. Good prevention in a scene at 71'. I would like to see the Scottish in a harder game at the championship.

  8. First half, Obrenovic error-free in an easy match. Everything is under his control, a disarming easiness. Rosetti, give him the final and go to see him !!!

    1. Error Free?? He was very poor in what was an easy game to referee. 4 Wrong YC, a Wrong RC because he was fooled by players exaggerating contact.

      Inconsistent foul recognition. Too many phantom fouls. He constantly stopped the play, and killed the flow of play because of this. It's a 7.8 performance.

  9. Very bad camera angle, so far from situation, no zoom, so it is hard to say the referee's decision is wrong if we talk about second yellow or the yellow card before. It was not an easy match in the second half. The players from Ireland dont know what is fair play..

    1. Excuses. The replays are clear, search twitter for #U17Euro, CZE players cheated the referee tonight sadly.

      No control by Obrenovic which led to mass confrontations after the game. No "Fair Play" by the Czechs

    1. LOL. It's an objective fact that the referee made several errors, to say he didn't is ridiculous. It would be great if we were able to praise the referee after the game but his performance doesn't warrant praise.

      He gave a number incorrect decisions against both teams! Wrong YC to CZE and phantom fouls as well and a number of wrong YCs and RC to IRL Both teams should feel upset.

      I hope the experienced observers on this blog find the footage and can share their opinion. Football is a contact sport, and a FIFA referee stopping the game any time a player fell over is amateur.

  12. I watched the Republic of Ireland - Czech Republic game handled by Rade Obrenović. This game was crucial for the qualification, and the refereeing generated much medial controversy after the game (also on this blog).

    Obrenović in the end made a huge mess, and realised a very evitable disappointing performance.

    My feeling is that the Slovenian never found the rhythm of the match starting from the first whistle.

    This wasn't especially evident in the 1H, everyone was playing nicely, I would liked a verbal warning for a SPA-esque foul ≈25' but no bigger problems (similar situation in 2H, but no bigger problem). I'm certain that Obrenović over played this in his mind, and thought "it would be good to show the first card of the game"; not unusual, I thought the same during some of my matches.

    Problem was that he totally invented a foul at 46' where he cautioned for a studs-on-boot tackle that was just a fully normal standing tackle on the ball. After that, surely he lost the confidence in his own perception, and sorted out three cautions for zero fouls after even poorly executed simulations (52', 67', +94' -> one can understand IRL11 anger having been sent off for two zero cautions). I was really shocked just how bad these four decisions were.

    Naturally, this irritated the players, especially Ireland, and the tension rose as they needed to score. Obrenović could sense this tension - yes, at least we had a small sign of the referee who excellently officiated the France - England game - and tried to calm down players at 78'. Having stopped play in order to stop a small conflict at 79', Ireland didn't give the ball back at the dropped ball and tried to score, and caused a mass confrontation where the referee correctly picked out one player from each team and admonished them with a YC. Czech Republic did the same about five minutes later, it was again not directly the referee's fault but he was again too passive, this time it passed calmly.

    All aforementioned as well as that Obrenović blowing the final whistle as Czech Republic had the ball in the penalty area - the last place he wanted to be was the pitch by now - caused the quite large riots that we saw at the final whistle.

    This all was rather evitable, actually the France - England was probably harder to referee and Rade Obrenović managed it very well (8,5/6 area), but this game ended up as a disaster for the refereeing in a game that Obrenović has the skills to solve without bigger problems. Referee lost the control - both regarding the riots and over his own decisions - he should be marked as much.

    Balancing just how poor the four cautions were against the decent prevention that we saw c. 78', I would evaluate him at 7,6.

    I still see the Slovenian as a huge talent who can make Elite (only 28yrs), but considering this happened right under UEFA's eyes, his evening in Waterford will likely take quite a lot of time to fully recover from.

  13. I'm sorry, I've seen a different way. Maybe episode of second yellow for the Irish is unclear but he was just a few meters and we on the couch. The controversy at the end of the match does not involve much Rade. We saw two different things
