    1. No, I don't. Simply explained: it was strange that Skomina had not been still appointed for a game. This could have meant something big... that's it.

  3. So we should probably see Makkelie on Manchester City - Lyon and Kuipers on one of the CL semifinals

    ReplyDelete
  4. Outstanding appointment for Skomina!!!! Great. Makkelie will complete QF and Kuipers one SF. I was expecting Cakir for tre other SF but due to his last performance, I think it will be difficult

    1. Brych for the other SF?

      Delete
    2. Probably Bayern or/and Leipzig will be there so i think we should see Brych in EL SF.

      Delete
    3. Marciniak and Skomina (in case of a good performance) are also possible for a SF, I think. Furthermore Taylor, Mateu or Turpin, if their countries are out from the competition.

  8. Congrats to Skomina. Deserved. He is curently best in Europe.

  9. I am not opposed to the appointment and think, that a CL QF for Skomina is not unexpected. However it has to be mentioned, that he missed MD5/6 and R16 in CL. Therefore his last CL match is over 9 months ago. Furthermore he wasn't used in the remaining R16 matches after the restart, so his last international match is 5 months ago.
Therefore his appointment for this top clash is somehow surprising to me, but the surprise is caused by his treatment by UEFA in the last time and not by doubts in his abilities.

  10. Another point: Irrati and Guida travel from Germany to Portugal - so we know now, that the referee groups for CL and EL are not strictly separated. It remains unclear though, whether that only applies to the VARs or also to the main referees.

  12. Yesterday in Elche-Zaragoza (LaLiga promotion play-off, semifinal 1st leg)

ELC22 sent off for violent conduct in 30', original decision YC upgraded to RC after OFR.

(Referee: Rubén Ávalos Barrera (1987), VAR: Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias)

    1. Very good VAR intervention and RC for VC in my eyes.
It can be seen that ELC#22 clearly strikes his opponent as a reaction of being stucked in his opponent's legs, without any intention to play the ball which was far away. Well done.
Apart from this incident, do you know how Ávalos Barrera performed?

      Delete
    2. Fine, besides the wrongly assessed VC.

      Delete
    3. In addition to the intervention of the VAR that supposed a correct change of decision after the OFR (initially it was a quite difficult situation for the referee's assessment), Ávalos made a remarkable performance; IMO consistent in the faults detection and efficient in the disciplinary control. He had a good management of the players.

    4. Modern < By the Book. This is how Skomina approaches every single game. For games like that where Barcelona or Atlético plays, the referee needs to be more stronger to not let the players climb on his head. I don’t agree with your “I hate my job, I don’t want to be here” attitude and it’s a disgrace to call Skomina for hating his job. He loves his job and with the way he referees we can all see that he is ranked higher than other referees.

    6. I would like you to compare the game he took charge of at Camp Nou Barca-Inter where he approached the game in the same way he did yesterday. He always uses the same gestures and the same posture for every single game. Yesterday’s Skomina was just the same as always. Skomina does not let any player do what he wants to do without the caution that the player deserve. Messi deserved a yellow card and I don’t really understand why Skomina did not book him, but I guess that he wanted to let the game flow without giving out to many cards. It was a wrong decision to not show a yellow card to Barcelona’s superstar. By rankings I meant that Skomina has been at the top level for a long time and when watching him you can clearly see that his way of refereeing and the management is higher than other referees. It’s hard to explain but Skomina does have something that other referees don’t have. He was ready for this game otherwise he would say no and the committee would find another solution. Remember that top referees are constantly in training and are focused to be ready for a new challenge. Skomina is a professional and proved yesterday that he still remains as one of the best referees if not the best in the world at the top level.

  36. The biggest difference between Marciniak and Skomina that Marciniak had a clear approach. (whether we liked it or not, he had his clear view how to handle the game) Skomina is very hectic and not consistent at all, that gives this weird impression in a rather easy game.

  39. Overall we saw a performance by Skomina noone will speak about tomorrow.
Good first half with a convincing approach to wait with cautions on both sides combined with a good player management. Unfortunately the first YC for Boateng was wrong. Skomina missed a reckless foul by Suarez before the incident.
Second half was not convincing anymore. At least confusing card management in 52' if not even mistaken identity. It looked like Skomina took the game too easily, so he was not concentrated anymore (especially around 58'-62'). You can easily see that on the two YCs that had to be given for protesting/dissent (one on each side). Foul detection left (important) points for improvement. The 2-5 for Munich calmed things down. Skomina seemed rather annoyed with the players in the last fifteen minutes. Close call in 82' before 2-6 for Munich. VAR checked everything and confirmed the no offside decision by AR1. It has to be rewatched but in case of a correct decision, you can name it a great call by AR1.
In the end, everybody will speak about the shocking result for Barca today. Skomina did not impress but did not fail either. An okayish performance.

  43. I cant believe that Suarez complained for something to Skomina after the final whistle. You lost 8-2 in CL quarter finals, you should be ashamed and go of the field and not complain to referee.
Skomina's performance wont be discussed, there were some points for improvement including lack of authority towards Messi in 11 minute, I think any other player would be booked...

  45. About Mateu Lahoz, do you think that the mistake he made against Manchester City two years ago could play a role in case of English team in final?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Not the mistake itself, but probably the bad relationship with pep guardiola could play a role and could add more pressure on lahoz. in case of bayern munich qualifying for the final, I would bet all my money on lahoz. If ManCity plays, I‘m not so sure. Probably Orsato then? But I don‘t think that there will be a second appointment for Kuipers for example.

  46. Skomina far from good tonight. I am very disappointed about the performance he delivered.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I am shocked and angry because of so many negative comments here and that’s not the first time it has happened. In my opinion Skomina wasn’t as bad as you all mention here. He missed fouls and wasn’t himself at times but he did a good game. Remember that he did not referee a big game in like 5 or 6 months and he still managed to do a somehow good game in a rare match. There is something that makes him a boss on the field and compared to other referees in elite there is not so many with the same attribute as Mr Skomina. Don’t forget that. I liked today’s performance and can’t agree with most of the comments here....

  51. What About Orsato for UCL final?
The last year Skomina was in charge of a quarter final in UEL and then got the final (Orsato was the ref of Wolves-Sevilla).
Maybe semifinal for Kuipers and Mateu, then the Italian for the final?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Orsato performed OK in his last game, but he did not show fitness and passion which I would expect for the final. I was maybe the first one to "nominate" him here, but I think Lahoz is a stronger candidate. Besides, very often we have spanish team in the final and this is a good opportunity.
We must not forget Taylor, after the last game he seems as a candidate if City is knocked out.

For semi finals EL: Brych and Marciniak
      Finale EL: Turpin

      Final CL: Lahoz or Orsato

  52. Judgement of Skomina´s performance can be done by two perspectives:
    (i) referee perspective: some weaknesses esp. in terms of foul detection. an average performance that could have been better but worse too. it was not a Skomina on his top level.
(ii) perspective of football supporters: big calls were correct; no influcence in the outcoming of the came; he was active when some tension arrive in the match.

my conclusion: although i am referee, i am fine with his performance because ref is no topic after this clash. Performance remembers me on Rizzoli in CL final and WC final where everybody critized missind red cards but "football family" was happy because ref was no topic. And honestly, we should not forget that ref should serve a game and protect the rules in same time.

    ReplyDelete
  53. My biggest problem was his approach.

He allowed players to complain, to yell and to even throw a ball at him.
Luckily for him, result allowed calm finish.

If the game was little closer he would have been in big trouble.

Thats why I dont think he is at Cakir's, Brych's and Kuipers level.
Their approach is different for this type of games, they have that needed calmness and authority that Skomina, tonight didnt had.

Luckily, noone will talk about his performance because Barca players didnt show up tonight.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He might have had an off night. Then again many people think Cakir did too a couple days ago. Refs can have off nights but overall career wise he is up there with those others you named.

  54. Biggest fault of VAR is in technical setup: case in point is in Lewandowski's goal, which from the angle at https://youtu.be/79y8vL69ynM?t=555 he looks obviously offside. VAR uses TV cameras, which are very far away from the action and at the wrong angle. There should be two cameras per half of field on each touchline near the penalty area to get the correct angle to see offside and fouls. One or two tv cameras nearer to the center of the field and too far away do not allow anyone to clearly see offside and many fouls, especially when offside is determined by centimeters. Unfortunately, the team owners or referee associations probably would not want to pay extra money for more cameras, but at least the technical set up of VAR should be up discussion and looked at critically.
