  1. Odd - her second final. Apparently the rules that apply to the men's don't apply to the women's finals.

  2. I can find as reason for appointing a referee who already had this final in past, the presence of VAR.
Indeed, the only major competitions with VAR so far for UEFA Women has been WC 2019.
Adámková, Braz, Frappart, Hussein, Kulcsar, Monzul, Pustovoitova, Staubli and Steinhaus were there. Almost all of them got already Champions League final, other ones were not possible due to the nationality of the teams. Only possible choice was Braz, but she wasn't called for this final stage.
So all in all, extra-ordinary situation + VAR in use have been the arguments behind this choice.

    1. Yes, I agree. Braz also didn't have any CL match this season.
The most experienced referees without final would have been Lehtovaara and Persson - but they lack VAR experience.

  3. Congratulations to Sanja Rodjak-Karsic, her second final as well (after 2018)! Great AR, she is regularly appointed in Croatian first league, an makes less mistakes than many of her male coleagues.

  4. It seems as there were many controversies in the recent CL KO games without VAR, indeed many people are asking why VAR only in final and commenting about that. I also read about an interview by a player from PSG after semifinal who was talking about the need of VAR. Do you know more in detail what happened? I didn't watch games but it seems as the level of officiating was heavily critiziced so far.

    1. Found two intereating incidents from Wolfsburg - Baercelona semifinal:

0:20:10 (12:40 match minute): clear penalty for handball missed.
1:42:10 (79:10 match minute): possible penalty.

    3. To be honest one could never say "not enough", the force used is very clear as well as the penalty, but still a situation perceived as difficult to read for referee given that it was away from the ball. A situation in which VAR should intervene also because totally missed incident.

  5. OT I hadn't check this before, but it seems confirmed, the UEFA badge is used also by NO FIFA officials when they have a UEFA game, so under this point of view it is a good thing because all the crew can feel more to be team, but, from another point of view, a clear devaluation of who is FIFA official, no doubt.
As observer of UEFA matters by years and years, I can say that everything in recent times has deeply changed, until some years ago we had very strict criteria for being a FIFA referee, now looks like the international officiating, at least at UEFA level, wants to break down bonds, to be easier, handy... being a FIFA referee since a lot of years and being NO FIFA can be even close to be perceived on the same level in terms of appointments.

  7. OT:

I’m having a discussion with a friend about a player being booked for handball leading to a goal.

If a player deliberately handles the ball (to control) and then scores a goal. Should he be booked?

I’m 100% sure that he should not. But I can’t convince my friend without actual match situations.

Does any incident from the past year comes to any of your minds? I just need the match and I’ll get the video.

    Thank you.

    1. He must be cautioned if the handball is deliberate, i.e. ift it would be e handball anywhere else on the field. If he commits a handball that is only punished directly before a goal or a scoring opportunity (that would be a play on normally) he is not cautioned.

  9. OT. Mark Clattenburg, the new head of Greek refereeing, when he took over the role he announced that he would publish the referees' committee viewpoints on match incidents for clarity and training purposes of the viewers. So, two days ago there was the 1st play-out match, refereed by Anastasios Papapetrou (FIFA 1st), and Clattenburg published the footage of this VAR intervention (Ref issued a YC at first but changed his decision to RC):

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=8&v=j35wkDljH9c&feature=emb_title

The statement suggests: " ...we recognize that it is hard for referees to judge such challenges on field, but it is important with the help of VAR it is possible to change these decisions. Referee committee believes this challenge is a dangerous one, the player has his leg prolonged, moves with power and makes high leg contact with the opposite player, without playing the ball. The committe has to protect the players from such challenges and will encourage the referees to issue Red card for these kind of challenges.

Is AR Cesar Noval really demoted from La Liga because of a photo from holidays with some players and their families? Isnt it harsh, because Soldado and Pareja play for different teams and it doesnt seem that there was any club sign, shirts or anything connectes to sport?

    1. If he is demoted because of the pics with friends then its disaster and shame for SPAIN.

    2. He is demoted from LaLiga. He says that for that reason, and that he was told by CTA that "they felt it was better if he didn't continue in LaLiga". Whether that is the true reason or not, nobody knows, but with him being among the best ARs two or three seasons ago, it is hard to believe he was the worst this season, given that only he was demoted as the other 3 spots were filled with retiring ARs. I can remember one particular performance from another pair of ARs in Copa del Rey in a round before VAR in which 3 crucial onside/offside decisions were wrong, so...

    1. Well I heard that they kept one of the officials for FIVE HOURS in the polygraph test, so it was surely Yes'kov.

It's surely not a penalty but the funny thing is that it's a supportable non-intervention in a UEFA match. First penalty in question in this match was a very good call in my opinion.

Not Elite material, but I liked Yes'kov as a 1st Cat. ref, and enjoyed watching his games.

RFU have the scapegoat they need. Absolutely shameful...

    2. I remember this match. That would be very harsh to ban him just for this match. Both not-interventions are understandable, as there was contact.

    3. First, Russian referees full of respect for them, but after Karasev, I think that next ten years they dont gonna have elite ref. Nobody from Russia do not deserve that now.

    4. Ivanov seems to develop well. 2 EL GS matches last year + U19 EURO SF and he is only 36. So he could become Elite in some years - or am I missing something?

    1. I would say, it's rather defender encroachment in the first case, the GK seems to have the foot over the line (or too close too call).
In the second case GK and defender encroachment...

Incident at Ajax - Eintracht Frankfurt. Makkelie did not whistle for a FK. Even though replays showed that the Ajax player kept his studs low and barely touched his opponents, this should have been a free kick and YC, right?

    2. Tricky. One could surely argue that it's dangerous and reckless.
But is it really? It seems a quite controlled action (he even shows that he is able to duplicate it...), stopping in front of the opponent and not harming him.
So I think, the play-on decison is supportable, while direct (or even indirect) free kick with or without YC would also have been OK.

    3. Definitely a foul. The risk of getting a much more ugly foul is here if you don't wistle there. I have seen similiar clips of footballers leaving the ground with both feet and then doing a rather normal tackle, I would call a foul and give them a warning. Something a bit similiar happened ATA vs. PSG at minute 4:30 (Challenge from Marquinhos), where he leaves with both feet but makes a fair challenge.

    2. No big news, only a formality.

But there were some rumors that he could end his career even this year due to missing motivation. Cakir and his assistants (Duran and Ongun) had interviews in lockdown time and all three said there goal is to attend EURO in 2021.
