    1. It's too bad there is no standard for such cases.
      Example (see video from 8.23)
      https://sport.ua/news/461730-daniya-shveytsariya-1-0-video-gola-i-obzor-matcha
      Added 4 minutes, corner 4.30, whistle 4.37.

      Delete
    2. That video is old and has no context to what happened during the additional time. Maybe things happened that added even more time.

      Delete
    3. Referee smartness.. If I am not correct, 4 min additional time means at least 4, not 4.00 sharp..
My "rule" as a ref coach is always (in a close game) NEVER blow the final whistle when the ball is on its way to the "hunted" teams penalty area.. Risk and reward...

      Delete
    4. Exactly, according to the LOTG, the additional time indicated means the minimum, not the maximum time, to be played.

He is big tattoo fan and that is something very unusual for referees. What do you think about this, is it ok for referees to be tattooed? 😄

    1. Nothing to against the tattoo but honestly I think it does not look professional as a referee. I remember Clattenburg got a tattoo on his wrist after EURO 2016 and he always wore long sleeve referee shirts since then. However, It seems difficult to hide in this case........

  7. OT: Two penalty incidents from yesterday's Levante-Athletic match (referee Isidro Díaz de Mera Escuderos, VAR Adrián Cordero Vega, both non-FIFA).

Both PK calls were supported by VAR and I understand why the referee had the perception of PK live, but watching the replay I think that both are very soft and at least the 2nd one deserved an OFR.

    1. First penalty: indeed attacker is just looking for the contact but one can't change this decision.
Second penalty: maybe more arguments in favor of OFR, given the blatant fall, but still... in my opinion VAR can't deny the presence of a very small contact, so nothing can be done. I think correct by VAR to stay silent in both cases, but both are NO PENALTIES, especially second one.

      Delete
    2. IMO
1- I'm actually okay with the call, no VAR-intervention for me.

2- I think, one van discuss about the penalty, which is indeed quite soft and I prefer no PK here, but VAR shouldn't intervene I think.

  8. A most remarkable situation in the Premier League match between West Bromwich Albion and Brighton and Hove Albion. Initially the referee disallows a BHA goal for not having released the free kick, to change his mind after a moment awarding the goal. Then VAR steps in and finally disallows the goal. Very confusing course of events in any case.

    https://streamable.com/kn8txl

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's a total mess. I really can't believe that.
The most absurd thing is that VAR didn't have any reason to intervene, they could have only disallowed the goal for offside or previous fouls. But allowing a free kick before the whistle is not VAR stuff... also, to be honest more than disappointing body language by Mason, about 5 minutes to understand that he had to whistle before the execution?

      Delete
    2. I don't know why the referee went to see the footage or why the free kick was redone as a result. It seems better to treat this as a simple incomprehensible case for my understanding of the rules.

      Delete
    3. I see it differently, Chefren. VAR could intervene because the ball was not legally brought into play. After positioning a wall before free-kick, there has to be a whistle. That did not happen which is quite surprising at this level.

      Delete
    4. IMO that's a total mess.
The handling by Mason of the scene on the one hand, but, even worse, the VAR work. That's not within the protocol I think!

      Delete
    5. If you listen carefully there was a whistle just before the free kick was executed, so actually the execution of tie free kick was legal. But just before the ball entered the goal, there was a second whistle, making play ‘dead’ from that moment on. That’s why VAR had to intervene I think, because that goal could not have standed because of the second whistle...

      Delete
    6. If play died on the referee's second whistle before the ball crossed the line, why could VAR intervene? There is no chance that you can correct it to a goal.
      I can't understand anything...

      Delete
    7. The VAR had to intervene because the referee changed his mind (I’m curious why he did) and did award the goal after initially disallowing it.

      Delete
    8. This is just a bit of madness for me. It's pretty poor refereeing

      Delete
    9. IMO, there are two technical explanations
      1) The referee accidentally/wrongly whistled/allowed the free kick execution, realized his mistake and therefore stopped the game (before the ball went in)
      2) The referee accidentally/wrongly whistled before the ball went in (for whatever reason) - but was fine with the free kick execution.

In case 1) it would be correct to retake the free kick. But in that case, the referee should have known that himself. And it would make no difference, whether his second whistle happened before or after the ball went in. The referee simply needed to decide: Did I deliberately allow the FK execution or not. That is nothing, where VAR could and should help.

In case 2) the correct restart would be a dropped ball for the GK. Here it is important, whether he whistled before or after the goal. And the VAR was correct to intervene after the referee decided to allow the goal, because he always can intervene for goals, which are scored incorrectly.

The problem is: VAR intervention and retake of the free kick don't go together - I don't find a technical explanation, where that would be correct.

      Delete
    10. I agree with Philipp's last sentence and that's the point, in my opinion VAR intervention was not possible in this case. A VAR intervention should bring to different outcomes, we never saw a free kick to be repeated, technically it was not even a disallowed goal. For sure, something that it is not reported in the protocol. "Ball out of play" in my opinion refers only to ball out from the field, nothing different, referee must be able by himself to understand when a whistle stops the game and all that stuff.

      Delete
    11. Well, I would slightly disagree and say that it was a disallowed goal. The referee had (after some hesitation) decided to award the goal and the VAR then recommended to disallow it again.

However, the protocol indeed states "An offence by the team that scored the goal in the attacking phase that ended with the scoring of a goal" as only reason for intervention in a goal/no goal decision. And surely we didn't have an offence by the attacking team in any way.
On the other hand, I would think that it is in the spirit of the protocol to intervene for all irregularities before a goal (if the advantage clause doesn't apply).

  10. I have some scenes from today's afternoon in German Bundesliga:

    1) Borussia Dortmund - Arminia Bielefeld, handled by Tobias Reichel [VAR: Benjamin Brand]:
Penalty given, no VAR intervention - shortly after the penalty whistled, the attacking team scores
    https://streamable.com/bo8s7f

    2) VfB Stuttgart - Schalke 04, handled by Guido Winkmann [VAR: Sascha Stegemann]:
    Penalty given, no VAR intervention:
    https://streamable.com/6y42co
From a second penalty appeal, I only have a picture available:
    https://ibb.co/c8nKYDj
-> In the meantime, DFB announced that VAR Stegemann was wrong in not intervening here and a penalty should have been awarded.

    3) VfL Wolfsburg - Hertha BSC, handled by Bastian Dankert [VAR: Bibiana Steinhaus]:
    Penalty given, withdrawn after OFR

    1. 1) Actually, even though the PK-whitle was too early, it was the right decision. Because Reus touches the ball with the hand before it goes to Reyna. I don't think the ref spotted that though ;)

    2. IMO
1 - Good call, as David well explained.
2 - First one rather no penalty, but VAR shouldn't intervene.
Second one is a CLEAR foul. I agree with DFB's statement.
3 - Good decision, no foul and no handball that are worth a penalty.

      Delete
    3. 1) Small mistake to not wait for an advantage - but with the handball this chance was gone anyway, so no bad consequences
      2) I agree with Flip on both.
      3) We don't know, whether the penalty was given for handball or foul, if I am not missing something.
If it was for handball, the VAR was obviously right to intervene, but the OFR was not neccessary for this factual decision. They then should still check, whether it was a mistake not to given the foul penalty before - but IMO that should be denied
If it was given for the foul, the question is, whether it was a clear and obvious error to give it. IMO it should be seen as such and it's good that the VAR intervenes, but I am not sure, whether that fits to the general threshold for interventions in Bundesliga.

      Delete
    4. DFB has clarified that in 3) the penalty was given for the foul (tripping) - and just waited for the advantage. According to DFB, the OFR is correct, because the attacker fell due to contact with the floor and his own foot and therefore it was no foul and a wrong perception by the referee.

      Delete
    5. In regards with the 3rd incident, IMO the OFR is wrong. I don't see the attacker falling because of a contact on his own feet but there is a clear contact with his opponent's knee. IMO the penalty is justified.

      1) Most decision seem to fit, but in the first clip I'd like a YC, but maybe one can still support the referee here.

      2) Seems to be a hard game, but all YCs are at least supportable. The possible penalty is borderline for me, one can understand both sides.

Bonus) Supportable decision for me, but not a mandatory one.

    2. 2) 69' For me, this is clearly not a handling-PK. The arm is in a natural position when going for a header (and not above shoulder) and there is pressure from the attacker. Even if the pressure would be only from the teammate (bad communication), I would not want a PK - Question: Does it matter if teammate or opponent?
I can not see a good reason to give a penalty, therefore I would like a VAR intervention if the PK is given.
The only reason for a PK would be, that the ball was long in the air IMO.

    1. Not the first time in recent times, some years ago we had Rocchi who talked after a very controversial performance in Juventus - Roma, but it was something very occasional, never repeated again. Now with the new course of president Trentalange this is the firdt innovation, he wants to break down some walls and I hope that this can help Italian football in understanding world of refereeing. When I read on this blog that in other countries like Germany, Netherlands and so on referees are allowed to talk after games and especially about the games, I understand how much is different in Italy, with the previous president who was very reluctant to all new technologies, mass media...
I don't know whether he will talk about previous games he officiated or it will be just a generic interview, I will let you know...
