2023-24 UEFA Women's Nations League - Referee appointments for MD1 and MD2

New competition in UEFA Women's football, please find below the appointments for MD1 and 2 of UEFA Women's Nations League. Among others, Russian referees will be back in UEFA duties after one year and half. Vera Opeykina will referee Armenia - Kazakhstan on MD2.

      There are two sides to this. On one hand of course Russian referees are also victims of this situation, there are probably many decent guys among them. On the other hand Putin always tries to show that despite the war everything goes on as normal in Russia, that there is no isolation of Russia. Until ordinary Russians will feel the hardships of Putin's policies this war will never stop. So I agree with Ref12 UKR and support Russias sporting ban.

      Anyone who (still!) believes the official version of the Al-Mirdasi story…. he fell out with the, now departed, Saudi sport minister of the time. Busacca doesn’t get too many things right, but I do think he was spot on about this referee - despite his appearance as a wide-eyed naïve youngster on the international stage, I think he had a great understanding of the game and actually a big future in FIFA refereeing. He would have only been 33yo at the Russian WC!

      Moen meanwhile was, always, a very poor referee.

    92' Slightly delayed flag and very delayed whistle for offside, almost like the officials had forgotten the absence of VAR.
    In the second half, lots of small injuries having stopped play, yet only three added mins seemed minimal, and making a player go off as their boot fell off is a completely new one on me. I was unconvinced.
    The one highlight was the first half 'interfering with the goalkeeper' offside that was given when England thought they had scored, good teamwork in that moment

      Indeed I think that the AR involved, Tiziana Trasciatti, forgot that this was a game without VAR. :)
      More generally, I think that the presence of VAR nowadays is something to be considered when new tournaments are created by UEFA, they should be aware that without the technology, the competition will be in danger of big criticisms. In this case we are talking about Women's Football and it's hard to believe to have VAR in all these games, but the importance of some clashes (see this one, ENG - SCO) surely raises the bar of media exposure!

      Not the first time we see something like that, in past we had other federations (especially RFEF in old times) but in my opinion for the physical health of a referee, even more because both very important games, this should be avoided.       Michael Fabbri was VAR, for many people red card to be issued, I think that the criterion he used for supporting Colombo was the low intensity and the fact that he was very "quick" while passing with the studs up on opponent. For me, a red card to be given on the pitch (should be a mistake for referee), but I'm open to discussion about VAR intervention or not. Let's see whether I find a video.

    I'm surprised by English commentator, who says that it should have been clear penalty because arm was not close to body. In my opinion this arm was not open and penalty would have been quite harsh if not wrong. Very natural position, only thing to do to avoid touch would have been putting arm behind back before the coming of the ball (not requested...).
    Nevertheless, VAR analyzed the situation, reporting a possible penalty after offside and this in my opinion means that Fabbri would have called Colombo to OFR, for me this would have been wrong.

      Colombo seems to be a new upcoming name in Italy getting some notable clashes starting from the half way on the 22/23 season. Similar path compared to Ayroldi, maybe even ahead of him? I have seen some of his matches and I really liked his body language and confidence.

      Is there any information about Colombo and his development Chefren? Possible chances to become Fifa in the upcoming years?

      According to what I have observed, he should be appointed as FIFA referee since January, replacing either Fabbri or Pairetto.
      Ayroldi should be considered on paper ahead of him due to experience in serie A, but he had many moments of poor form and he never found the right path, while Colombo was quick, in a few serie A games, to turn into a solid and reliable referee. He made some mistakes, of course, but he never lost the plot. So, despite of having arrived later in serie A, he has indeed in my opinion surpassed Ayroldi. The positive points about him are the ones you described.

      A step below Colombo, in my opinion, he still needs development, for a long time Rocchi has appointed both on a similar path, but in recent times Colombo showed in my opinion to be ahead. I think that Marcenaro still lacks in soft skills. He doesn't have a strong body language like Colombo and in some games there are very often minor wrong decisions. For example today he missed a very big advantage in Empoli - Inter (minute 4') and then later a clear YC for SPA against Empoli was wrongly assessed as play on. You don't have the idea that he is always "clean" in his games. I think he will have to wait 2025 for the badge. But basically for sure a good referee and a hope for the future.
      We will see.

      That was not only shoot on goal, Romero use his hand to block the ball from empty net, Vicario already in dead position. The commentator also said it was potential RC but even YC not given.

      Two big incidents for Alberola at the end of the half - disallowed goal for Real in conjunction with his first linesman, and then only a caution for Giménez after a tackle bordering on both DOGSO and excessive force; both were correct decisions imo.

      In general, not many problems for him in the 1H but a tetchy end could prove prescient. A bad play on and zero reaction against two blatant kicking the ball away(s) all in in the first 15min were cause for concern, but one must say so far so good for the rookie derby ref at HT.

      Perhaps more of an argument for 'this big game probably had a lower difficulty grade than maybe expected' than 'Javier Alberola Rojas showed sophisticated match/player mgmt skills and the ability to handle tough clashes', but despite the confrontation at the end, one must say that it was a good performance by Alberola. One penalty appeal of note in the 2H (handling). I'll try to upload some clips tmr.

      This will sound like I keep every single mistake of him in my brain,but last 10 minutes and disciplinary control in the 2nd half could have been better.

      Clear,and I mean crystal clear YC missed to Savic for foul on Joselu.If not for that,than for protests in which Savic was very vocal and even running towards him.
      Nacho also had late foul,Hermoso was also problematic.
      But even though I dont like his style,he finished this game in shadow and brought it home like he was supposed to,good job by Rojas.

      First situation: not a mistake to call offside for that player, but some people will disagree. Being a pitch decision, can't be questioned by VAR, but of course discussed.
      Second situation: not a clear DOGSO, so OK SPA, borderline between reckless and SFP for the intensity of the tackle, correct NO VAR intervention. Would have been more difficult for VAR what to do in case of RC issued by referee.
      Third situation: no penalty, correct decision.

    32' - possible YC Hakimi (PSG) after late dynamic tackle; still OK to keep cards in the pocket but I would like to see some reaction against the offence

    32' - possible YC Mbemba (OM) for potential SPA tripping; understandable to not issue a YC here, having in mind the previous incident, although there was quite a lot free space in front of the attacking player

    34' - possible YC Zaïre-Emery (PSG) after late challenge; again it's OK not to book a player but some kind of warning should have followed

    37' - 2:0, possible offside position of goalscorer, replay in 44' not convincing...

    45+3' - warning to Lucas Hernández (PSG) after step on foot; should've been a yellow card as a) the offence was clear and b) it was an excellent moment to open the cards

    53' - warning to Balerdi (OM) after late challenge; the referee clearly indicated that he is balancing the warnings with the 45+3' incident, one can argue if this challenge deserved such an action but once again a very elegant way to sell the warning by separating the warned player

    55' - showing 'thumbs up' gestures to Mbemba (OM) after he apologized his opponent and offered his help; it's really nice to see a referee who isn't afraid of officially praising the behaviour that helps him to keep control of the game

    62' - missed corner kick to OM

    62', 65' - late challenge and off-the-ball holding by Renan Lodi (OM), warning for the second offence (after advantage)

    71' - possible YC Manuel Ugarte (PSG) for potential SPA holding; the referee was (rightly) looking for a possible advantage but going back to foul it was quite blatant SPA scenario at that moment

    73' - YC Gigot (OM) for reckless step on foot + SPA; mandatory

    82' - YC Veretout (OM) for SPA tripping; maybe not 100% clear SPA scenariou but dynamic action and deliberate character of the offence made it an easy caution

    85' - YC Renan Lodi (OM) for SPA impeding; mandatory

    Typical French disciplinary line - keep cards in the pocket as long as possible. Today it was feasible because the game was not challenging (no KMIs) and players behaved really well, also due to Willy Delajod's good rapport with them. He was respected throughout, no single dissent is really something in such games - it was visible that the players enjoyed his refereeing. Very clear gestures and elegant style. Although I would prefer two more YCs (45+3', 71'), I really liked Delajod's performance. I just hoped for a more challenging game ;)

      - Gaillouste : for me a very weak referee, I never understood why the committee had such a focus on him. He has a very, very nonchalant way of behaving, and is barely respected by the players (he had big troubles last year in a Ligue 2 game in Metz, where he interrupted the match because his own safety was no longer assured after 3 RC against home team).

      - Dechepy : for me an excellent referee in terms of decicion-making, he almost always gets his KMIs right. His main weakness IMO is related to fitness and especially positioning, he has trouble knowing how to position himself on the pitch. But he will be interesting to see on an UEFA level.

      - Wattellier : IMO an inconstant referee, pushing the so-called ‘French style’ (i.e. keeping the cards in the pocket) at its maximum. He is very tall and has great communication skills with the players, allowing his to have an exceptional display when things turn OK for him in the game. Great referee to see when in a good day. However, this style is dangerous and he has difficulties to adapt when the game gets more difficult for the referee.

      - Pignard : had an outstanding 21/22 season, but since… last season I would say ok, despite some weak domestical performances, he still managed to sometimes have the level of the previous season. But this season he had 2 extremely weak games, getting almost every KMI wrong. I hope he can recover from his injury soon and get back to his old days because he used to be a superb referee.

      Gaillouste was veeeerry lucky to be given a FIFA bagde in the first place, but as the French committee didn't find a replacement after Frank Schneider's (undeserved, btw) demotion, he got the call, despite being IMHO nowhere near FIFA level. However he is from the most powerful refereeing region, so there isn't a point writing the main reason of his promotion...

      Wattellier is the spitting image of the Ligue 1 referee: extremely lenient, managing as much as possible before taking disciplinary actions. He's beneffiting a lot of his Pitana-esque physque to ensure authority and win over players. A decent ref for sure but limited when it comes to hot/passionate games, where staying in the background don't work. He won't reach that much in UEFA, in my view.

      I'm very happy for Dechepy, he has improved so, so much since his promotion in Ligue 1. One of the most reliable officials domestically, rock solid decision maker. As Anonymous excellently said, he's limited in the athletic area though. I believe he will have the same career path as Buquet: top 1st cat and steady pair of hands, but eventually ignored for a younger referee to reach more.

      Pignard has always been a candidate to the TOP to me, but performed poorly in the last few weeks (2 wrong KMIs in Ligue 1 games Brest-Lens and Nantes-Monaco), and showed no visible improvements in his officiating for the last ≈18 months. That costed him the battle to the promotion in 1st cat, where Delajod, whose level has peaked recenlty, got picked instead.

      Thanks a lot for your replies! So, in general my impressions were right about Gaillouste and Wattellier (I couldn't agree more about the former having a 'very, very nonchalant way of behaving' and being 'barely respected by the players' - exactly my impressions from Legia - Austria!). Interesting that such big football nation can't provide better candidates for the FIFA list.

      And it seems that also in France (like in Italy) clubs have too much power nowadays and everything is done to please them...

      Is Buquet still in the FIFA list during 2024 ? I red that after his demotion to 2nd group he would have been retired from international duties. What about Millot ? I though he was one talent in French to e pushed.

      Buquet, who will turn 47 in January, indeed remains in the FIFA list.
      Millot works mainly as VAR in UEFA, and will turn 42 in January so IMO logical choice. Buquet is far more often on the pitch than Millot at UEFA level and remains a safe pair of hands.

    Yesterday AIA started with the publication of VAR audios, as I had reported, on Italian Pay TV DAZN.

    I uploaded this video from Monza - Lecce, I had already posted the clip here on the blog, OFR for removing a RC:

    The details: Rocchi assessed this as clear and obvious mistake by referee, he said that he can accept the RC on the pitch because the challenge can look like a SFP, but VAR was right in calling him to video and the fact that he didn't change idea after review led the referee to an important reduction of his mark (not the first time for Marinelli, as you can know if you follow serie A).

    Then now, into the clip: it is interesting to hear the technical assessment made by Serra (Main VAR) and Irrati (AVAR). Simply said, Irrati in this incident worked like a tutor for Serra. He explained the reasons for which this shouldn't be red card: Serra agreed.
    The criteria are that the ball was clearly played before and then after that the player from Lecce couldn't stop himself, and it was rather Monza player to join the path of opponent (coming close to him). Only a SECOND MOVEMENT with one of the two legs by player (this is the key word) would have allowed VAR to accept a RC. In other words, the player who made the foul couldn't do other things than what he did and the original challenge, targeted on the ball, couldn't be penalized too much. Rocchi fully agreed with Irrati.
    Then as you can easily see and listen, Marinelli didn't agree, talking about a very clear red card due to the point of impact, without thinking to other circumstances. He has a very agitated style if you ask me, he doesn't convery calm to players by his way of dealing with incidents (screaming and repeating always the same things). If you hear other referees, totally different approach...
    I must say that this assessment can't find all people agreeing, and indeed for me VAR remains quite subjecive stuff in such circumstances, I'm still not convinced by this reasoning, because otherwise and simply said, you could forgive all the players trying to go for the ball originally and then hitting opponent like this one if not even worse. To me still not a 100% black or wihite situation.

      However I think this case is more of an issue of how we are using VAR. I think the question is if this is a VAR case, where referee need to be invited for OFR. I think RC is absolutely not clear and obvious error and referee had clear view probably he could see exactly the same on the screen what he saw real life.

      I don't think that such case should be the showcase piece for demonstration of VAR decisions. And to me it's weird that they made this as a fault of Marinelli. In my interpretation it's rather wrong intervention from Serra and Irrati.

      And one more sidenote, as a referee I think player's safety should be the top priority. So we can find arguements pro and contra, but was this act endangered player's safety? Yes, it was.

    Quite bizzare situation in Serbia,maybe some friends from overthere can help us understand the situation but it goes like this;

    Jovanovic has been appointed as main ref in Serbia's biggest match, Partizan vs Red Star.

    Now,problem is that Red Star demands that his appoitment should be removed and that serbian comitee puts another ref,cause they had problems with Jovanovic in past.

    This is 1st time I ever heard that such pressure is put on ref,it's interesting to see what will happen in following days.

    Usually we would hear that some teams are not happy with certain refs,but I never heard that one tewm wont play cause one ref is appointed to their game.

    Looks like that is typical Balkan problem cause in Croatia is something similar,maybe not in that scale.

    Croatian Comitee has huge pressure and problem in appointing main ref for biggest match there that is Hajduk vs Dinamo.

    Maybe solution is one:like Greece,these big matches should maybe handle foreign refs and that way we protect refs,cause this is the only way to deal with delusional clubs and fans that create violent and hostile enviroment towards refs.

    Cause it's easier to blame one guy in the middle than your team that loses.

      Like in Croatia, the Serbian SuperLiga actually has a competitive title race this season for the first time in a while (at this stage anyway); Partizan, Red Star, and even TSC all have strong squads and the gap in points at the top is minimal.

      I am of course biased as a Partizan fan, but Red Star really have no merit to their complaints. I feel as though they sense that their ~5 year hegemony in the SLS is about to end, and the match with Partizan comes at a bad time, as their biggest rival is in a good moment in the league right now.

      Serbia doesn't really have a history of foreign referees, and it's usually been the #1 Serbian referee who has handled the Belgrade Derby (Mažić in the past, Jovanović now).

      Interesting to see what happens in any case.

      As a Croat that also prefers Partizan over RS,I have to agree with you that RS have no right to say anything.
      If we talk about conspiracies,then plenty mistakes in last 10 years and in all time has gone in their (RS)favour.
      Interesting to see what happens, but I remember when Mazic was in charge that he was also criticized.

      But I understand, that's our mentality,we would rather say something bad than something good and it is what it is.

      I am not surprised about this news, to be honest: In Austria, Manuel Schüttengruber was not appointed for a any Bundesliga match in the current season so far (maybe an injury) but just had some VAR assignments. After his international demotion in summer, one could expect his retirement as it is usual in such cases to make room for more prospective candidates.

      Why are other confederations sending generally their best referees to Saudi (like e.g. 2022 WC attendees, maybe with the exception of Abatti & Falcón from U20 WC who have also refereed a game there this season), while UEFA referees in Saudi tend to be 1st or even 2nd Cats? (Petrescu, Kabakov, Bognár, Lechner, Jablonski, Chivulete, Godinho, Veríssimo, San...)

      Ofc Saudi sometimes bring Orsato, Makkelie or Marciniak to important games, but I'm kinda surprised their top clubs happily agree to have 2nd Cat (i e. "3rd tier") European referees in their games.

      IMO even when Saudi referees didn’t get “big game”, they still have much better referees in terms of their qualities than QFA, QFA have weak referee and worst VAR ever, Al Jassim-Al Marri. In ACL and WC U20, Al Hoish performed very very well and not long in the past they have Al Mirdasi, so I think even with foreign referees they still produce at least better referees than QFA!
