  4. OT: Hi everyone! I would like to ask if any of you know a link of the official profiles WITH FOTO of the referees in England - Select group 1 and Italy. A big part of the referee section in the Premier League site is completely non functioning and in the AIA site the referees are presented only by names. Thanks anyone in advance!

    1. All corruption of the highest order. Unfair on many other small country referees who have zero chance of getting these competitions even as support. Maybe if Andorra had uefa president, Andorra refs would get this very special treatment

    1. He will only act as support referees no more and also he is very poor referees, very undeserved and it was political decision from FIFA to use special designation for support referees but IMO they will only use only single game as FO, and another more deserved referee will be act as FO.

  9. Rossetti is like that, he takes very good care of what he really likes.
It's worth little if they whistle well if not. What counts are the phone calls, the pats on the back, etc...
The result of this work is the terrible performances of the referees that we have been seeing lately.
Bravo Rossetti, you are number 1!

  11. Regarding Karaoglan in his first year on the FIFA list:
His selection is indeed quite remarkable.
However, he already did the U17 EURO final and a Conference League play-off (and the Turkish cup final) this year, so it looks like he is heavily pushed at the moment.

The other UEFA places simply go to U21 EURO KO stage referees, so one could have expected Lambrechts instead of the Turk.

    1. Karaoglan is a very talent referee. Very reliable and consistent.

    2. Didn’t watch him often, but he was horrible in last weeks U21 Swi-Fin (at least 1 missed RC and 5 missed YC), no consistency and very lenient, doing warnings over warnings. Reminded me a lot of Sanchez in horrible PSV-Rangers.

    3. "Atilla Karaoğlan is one of the worst referees in Turkey. He officiates with the support of UEFA Executive Committee member Servet Yardımcı. Despite making numerous fatal mistakes, he is untouchable. His appointment to officiate in major tournaments' finals is also thanks to Servet Yardımcı. You can be sure he is better protected than Joe Biden. Normally, referees who make such mistakes see the end of their careers in Turkey (e.g., Ali Palabıyık). However, you will soon see him elevated to the Elite Category. Now, I will demonstrate how poor of a referee he is with the penalties he awarded in two very important matches."

    1. Wow it was huge number of “poor” referees :) but nevertheless I think some name will be act as VAR specialist and if we look at 2019 then for some referees didn’t have their full team. Interesting to see Alireza Faghani present as representative of Australia not Iran, will he have the chance in 2026 as Australian representative? Or maybe like Irmatov in 2019, The Final in Qatar will be his farewell match.

      Delete
    2. It all depends on how FIFA will see Faghani's age in 2026, when he will turn 48.

  16. 2013 - Slavko Vincic (Euro U17)
    2013 - Matej Jug (Euro U21)
    2013 - Damir Skomina (U20)
    2015 - Matej Jug (U17)
    2016 - Mitja Žganec (Euro U17)
    2016 - Damir Skomina (Euro)
    2017 - Slavko Vincic (Euro U21)
    2017 - Slavko Vincic (U17)
    2018 - Damir Skomina (WC)
    2019 - Rade Obrenovic (Euro U17)
    2019 - Slavko Vincic (U20)
    2020 - Slavko Vincic (Euro)
    2022 - Slavko Vincic (WC)
    2023 - David Smajc (Euro U17)
    2023 - Rade Obrenovic (Euro U21)
    2023 - Rade Obrenovic (U17)

They succeed with Skomina and Vincic and failed with others and now Obrenovic with the same path as Vincic in 2017.
The question are that all Slovenian appointments based on merit? I don’t think so, especially when we look at Ceferin taking over UEFA in 2016. But we can’t said that was “nepotism” when someone can proving themself that they deserved to be at the tournament. So IMO based on 2023 Euro U21 performance (also with Eskas, Krogh, and Pinheiro), Obrenovic more than deserved to be chosen as main referee in Indonesia, maybe the others that “unlucky” is Fesnic and Rumsas (but he’s in Argentina).

Interesting to see who are his AR? Is Jure Praprotnik, former Skomina team will play a role like Erwin E.J. Zeinstra in Gozubuyuk team?

    ReplyDelete
  17. 1) I think that more than Čeferin's, it's Šajn's influence and membership in UEFA referees commitee that leads to Slovenian referees being pushed within UEFA ranks or at least given the chance to do it.

    2) Despite 1), Slovenia has been doing a very good job in producing good referees in the last 10-15 years (Skomina, Vinčič, Jug, Obrenovič, possibly Šmajc), besides the political support it's a country clearly punching above its weight and Šajn is probably doing a very good job at home.

    1. As a German I say: Slovenia did a very good job in the last years and has got a lot of top referees!

    2. Slovenia doing good job?
My question is: what if Vincic or Obrenovic are not from Slovenia but from another small country like Slovenia? Let's be honest if you push a normal referee all the time and you close one eye for every mistake he makes he makes its obvious that he would achieve something.
You also mentioned Smajc, from Euro U-17 until now one of most mediocre referee i have ever watched. Mistake after mistake and Ref com continue to push him.

    3. It‘s very easy - would the slovenian referees have the same chances if they came from a country with a similar weak league as for example Bulgaria, Azerbaijan or moldavia? - I say never.
Anyone who knows a bit about international refereeing knows that the current situation with Ceferin and Sajn is an incredibly big advantage for the Slovenians.
      That‘s a fact!

    4. Same for italy and their referees who with exeption of Orsato would be mediocre 1st category refs at best.

    3. The fascination with Oceania never ceases to amaze me. The fact that it's its own confederation is a quirk of geography and political administration. And it's dominated by one nation anyway. Remove New Zealand and the matches in that confederation would effectively be amateur matches almost any place throughout Europe, the Americas, and beyond. The idea that referees in the South Pacific islands are likely to be up to snuff for elite level referee strains credulity. Even if there's a diamond in the rough to be found, why focus there and not elsewhere?

The combined population of Oceania is just about 20M. By comparision, India has 1.4B, Indonesia has 275M, Pakistan has 240M, Nigeria has 220M and Bangladesh has 170M. All of those nations have either never had a World Cup referee or haven't had one in a long, long time. That's almost 2.5 billion people who don't have a referee representing them at the World Cup, yet some of us get fascinated with Fiji or Tahiti because of how FIFA chooses to organize itself.

    1. I talked about him in particular here on the blog, now just to write a few words, in my opinion a very good referee, who deserved the FIFA nomination. Nevertheless he had a very negative period for a quite long time (about a year). It seems as now he is recovering, the old Sozza, one year before nomination, was a real talent. Hopefully he will not lose himself by applying a certain style we saw in some games... he can reach very important goals.

      Delete
    2. I dont know how to feel about this appoitment.

On one hand I'm happy for him,he gets chance to handle biggest match in Italy.
      But on the other,concerned.
      Why?

Well cause of his inconsistent form, lenient style and that could be problematic for this match that has plenty hotheads and when derby match is at stake, even players that are cold become fiery ones.

He has sometimes great way of managing players through talk, but waits too long with cards and in this big match, you dont have time for mistakes like that.

Yes,he handled big matches in couple of years,Milan vs Lazio,Inter vs Roma,Juve vs Fiorentina and so on,but this is different aninal.

Also,I hope that Rocchi and co.lear ed something about beneficiary factors of implementing new rules with bookings, player management and timewasting and that we will see changes in Italy.

If not, then it will be another matchday that's going to be frustrated to watch in terms of referreeing.

Hours before Maresca will handle Juve vs Lazio will be interesting to see how he performs cause this season he only had 2 Serie B matches and in those matches he showed 17 YC's and 3 RC's.

Also he was very giving UEC match where he showed 8 cards.

Could we say that Maresca rosso is back?

If I had to choose between these 2 ,I would rather choose Maresca's style cause it is most of the time textbook, when it's YC,there is no waiting,he shows YC.
I think that in terms of disciplinary control, he is one of rare,if not the only one that still has that old school mentality that Rocchi and Rizzoli had.

Anyway, hopefully we see great games and even better officiating.

  30. After Mike Dean, another referee talks about the difficulties of being VAR. The interview is in Italian, but the highlights is “as a VAR sometimes you can feel what the referee would feel at the monitor and you avoid to ruin the ref’s day. This should not happen”

  33. Indonesia vs Ecuador for the opening match, what’s your prediction? IMO UEFA No.1 will be the referee, for me UEFA No.1 is between Eskas or Pinheiro, but I can’t exclude Obrenovic. The VAR surely I predict Di Paolo.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think, this pairing really needs a big name, so I am going with Pierre Atcho (with Benbraham as VAR) for the opening match (which isn't even the first game of the tournament...).

But I agree that Pinheiro and Eskas are the top names in the tournament, probably together with Ko, who is quite experienced in AFC and K-League.

      Delete
    2. CAF officials for the opening match? Is it “possible” with the trend recently.

      Delete
    3. I think Indonesia v Ecuador really needs big name, I expect Pinheiro, because this is Indonesia first match, in front of Indonesian supporter, so much scrutiny for the referee, and appointing big name means respect for Indonesian host

I don't think the Gabonese is right for this match. This match needs European as the referee

      Delete
    4. Eventhough this is not the first match, this is the match where president will attend, presidential candidates attend, politicians attend, opening ceremony will happen, so of course all eyes must be on the referee, Indonesian media will scrutinize every single referee that is appointed to Indonesian matches

      Delete
    5. I don’t know how you rate “opening match” of the tournament, but iinm opening “host” match of the FIFA tournament always give the stage for big name and final candidate, isn’t it?
@Philipp can you give an example when opening match of the tournament use “unorthodox” referee?

      U20WC 2019: Ghorbal
I think, those weren't among the biggest names at the time - without much international experience at that point.
And of course Irmatov 2010 is the classic example...

    7. Yes in certain degree I agree, IDNECU could be the best game to try the best unpredicted names from the refcom but I don’t think his background would help him, it’s different case with names you mentioned at that time iinm, maybe only one similarity between those, their age. Vargas, Ghorbal, and Irmatov from “big enough” confederation/nations. Al Jassim clearly in preparation for Qatar 2022 (Abd. Abdou’s age not support the situation).
