Good game for Peljto. Marciniak has an important game as well. I’m curious who is appointed for Ukraine-Italy now. My first idea was that UEFA swapped Letexier and Zwayer’s games, but after seeing 4 German crews already (Siebert, Schlager, Osmers, Stegeman), it would be surprising to see a 5th one. Is Zwayer injured?

No injury, as far as I know. I think when we consider the historic background of the italian match, the committee trusts Letexier more and I think they are right doing so. In heated gamey Zwayer tends to losing any line if not panicking...

I agree on most of the points, sometimes VAR choices are really strange, Portuguese VAR with German crew is another example of that. Would have been very easy to send all German officials in Kazakhstan.
DeleteBebek can become a big option as VAR because from a rather very neutral country, no big teams in top competitions from Croatia. He can be appointed for many games.
He distinguished himself for a very long career as FIFA referee (2003 - 2022), now he can continue with VAR for a very long time. No Ukrainian for San Marino particular as well.
Carlos Del Cerro Grande has a big trust, but it is not difficult to be better than De Burgos. I say that from a very neutral point of view, the Spanish showed very often also a clear lack of knowledge. Among the recent Spanish FIFA referees, in my opinion he was definitely the only name clearly out of context... with an enormous gap to other referees.
Schlager with boring 1st half in Astana. Just good call to punish KAZ player for simulation. For German readers Schlager vs Jablonski, who will you choose? IMO from the appearance Jablonski in front.

I'm not the first fan of Cristiano Ronaldo, but here I think we must be realist. He was late, trying to reach ball, keeper made it before him. Clear foul because the Portuguese arrived later, but I don't think you can discuss about a clear red card. YC is the expected decision, giving the benefit of the doubt that Portuguese didn't want to hurt keeper. You know that when keepers are lying on the ground, making saves, they risk more than other players, but this doesn't mean that they must be treated differently. I don't see a RC here.

I saw most of Kazakhstan - Northern Ireland and I definitely agree with comments above. Maybe one match is not enough to judge a referee, but I liked his style, I observed some skills that are always missing in the other German referees at top level: quickness, reaction to incidents, showing card procedures, but, first all, a certain "severe" approach with a strong body language, that was never, just to make an example, shown by Siebert and the others. I think that if this is his style in all games, he can be definitely above all for the next promotions. If time will allow me, I will post some clips...
ReplyDeleteCannot say anything about the match, but I can confirm that it totally sounds like his normal style. Referee being able to let the game flow or not, very strict in respect to unsporting behaviour by the players and IMO always giving a card if necessary. Compared to other referees, more he pursues more a "law in the book“ approach. Could work quite well with teams from Southern Europe…
DeleteBut for me Schlager take big risk to allow last attack from NIR, we can see yesterday in Turkey, Orsato blew his final whistle 7 seconds early and I can’t imagine if NIR scored at their last attack because one can argument that 6’ added time it’s too much.
ReplyDeleteIgor Pajac will be the new Croatian cat1 referee right ? I am watching him on Hungary-Czechia. He is extremly poor, more than lenient style. Teams dont understand him. He missed a lot of foul, extremly poor card management on a challenging match. No yellow for foul, 3 yellow for dissent. If his style will continue in the future he will have huge problems.

In Bundesliga Aytekin and Jablonski are clearly in front. But its true, if we regard Brych internationally and in Bundesliga, thus IS another pair of shoes. If Jablonski learns to adapt himself quicker to the character of the match and improves his body language, he will be a top elite referee for sure - Osmers is a big talent and like Schlager his style matches well with international clashes, they both act bravely, but Osmers must learn not to act in a hectic way and Schlager yet has to find a more consistent line of foul detection. Talking about big talents in Germany we still have the young Badstübner, being very promising. So the times of great German refs will be back soon, dont worry.

Obviously one game shouldn’t determine his entire season, but others are examples of referees needing months or even years to regain trust for a game like this

We can be sure that Sanchez will be appointed in Group F UCL soon. The toughest group. Not because he had a great start of the season, but the Ref com will be in trouble to find neutral and experienced officials for the 12 games in that group. One of the few groups that is available for Spanish refs. I guess we can pencil Gil Manzano and Hdz Hdz as well

I can see a lower ranked ref in that game, e.g. Peljto, Gozubuyuk, Meler, Hernandez, however I don’t see any of those names in Milan vs PSG or Newcastle vs PSG

DeleteSmall remark, as a NL based person, I think Turpin in the Kuip stadium is still a bit tricky after the incidents years ago. We all know he massively improved and is one of the best referees atm, but Feyenoord Ultras still remember…
Regarding Makkelie, I also thought of him in MIL-NEW, as I can’t see him with PSG or Dortmund, however his form is still a mystery after he missed the QF’s last season. Probably an injury, cause his fitness level has dropped. In the Dutch competition, he struggles with fast counter attacks. Therefore I would be surprised to see him in a big game like that instantly. I rather think they won’t push him. Maybe Europa League, maybe a lower profile UCL game to work his way back to the top
@diego: I don't think, all the big names will be used on MD1. Normally referees don't do two matches on MD1&2 and there are also several big games on MD2.

I don’t know why many users predict FRAPPART, did she super referee? It’s mindblowing that many users still in favor of Frappart over another female referees, like Martincic, Foster, etc. I mean her time is over, why u often mentioned her, with all respect this is embarrassing that many of us acts like the refcom in 2019 when Frappart chosen as the referee for Super Cup.

DeleteIMO, it's just the logical step in Frappart's development to get the chance for more than one GS game in CL this season.

Of course there are other options for Bern-Leipzig, but overall not too unlikely, that she gets one of the 32 CL games on MD1/2, I think.
And if we look at a possible EURO selection, it could make sense, that Rosetti observes her.
Other female referees (besides Monzul) need to make their first steps in other male's competitions before being considered for CL.
then simply don’t appoint her, because if we fair enough, you can’t appoint Kulbakov and as someone said refcom just wait for Collum retire, and then we have Sidiropoulos and so on, why you must appoint her? I can’t find any logical reason, based on merit is it fair enough to exclude Collum so far? Is he perform badly than Frappart? Politics again, but even if we talk about politics I can’t understand why another big FA not hurry to push Foster or Welch or Caputi, they are good enough than Frappart at the moment (we don’t talk the past). Is FRA FA more powerful than ENG FA and ITA FA :)

ReplyDeleteBrych also had this problems in the Bundesliga. The German football bubble (media, clubs, fans) has expectations to referees, which are not compatible with the requirements on international stage. The Germans like nice guys like Aytekin, Gräfe or Jablonski. Schlager has, similar to Brych, a more consequent style, this is not so popular in the Bundesliga but necessary by handling international games and I think he has a good chance to become very successful. But also Jablonski is very talented (technically more than Schlager in my opinion), he must only learn from the mistakes of many German referees in the last years and he must understand that he can not adapt his style in the Bundesliga on the international stage.

Quite worrying that even YC came only after a certain delay... in my opinion clear RC due to point of impact, VAR should have intervened.
Maybe better to use Ukrainian VAR, but again they only againts San Marino, who care?! But what do you think about Balakin performance so far? I didn’t see he’s good enough to be solid cat. 1, indeed he’s only 34 or 35. Overall I think many of us underestimate San Marino, did you forget Aghayev missed penalty in San Marino, very embarrassing for him. And I didn’t see Aghayev name so far, anyone know what happened with him?

As said, ZERO tolerance against unsporting behaviour - all dissents, DtR immediately cautioned. I love this new approach! Hopefully, after three-four matchdays players will adapt and we won't see all those disrespectful behaviours and kicking the ball away.
Besides the POL's goal disallowed for offside (after VAR intervention), the only key match incident was a possible 2nd YC to 10POL. Indeed, if whistled, it should've been a mandatory YC for SPA. However, one may argue if there was a foul at all... Still a 7,9 in observer's report though?
Just an interesting remark about Sánchez Martínez: he officiated CL Play Off PSV - Rangers before the Summer Course, so it is easy to guess that committee asked all referees to apply this style. A radical change for him, but, as you said, this must last in the months and for the full season, otherwise it will be always the same...

My opinions:

45'+7 excellent decision, we should have expected this one even in old times, due to the very blatant gesture against AR, but it could have gone unpunished...
45'+8 absolutely refreshing to watch such yellow cards issued, this seems to be definitely a new era of refereeing
59' clear time wasting by keeper and appropriate punishment
67' If whistled, 100% card because evident SPA. No doubts, impossible to whistle without booking. About the foul, well, playing on wouldn't have been a scandal, I think. But the Spanish can't escape from a crucial mistake, too evident that it was a very promising attack, close to penalty area and with only one or two defenders.
75' maybe more quickness in preventing in this case was possible by referee, the confrontation between players lasted for a while, the Spanish didn't run immediately, but of course very good with the card
88' this was expected also before, very evident dissent
Well, if all games will be handled in this way, we will see a different football in group stage, and I will be ready to study the reaction by Italian teams and the press, these behaviors are mostly allowed in serie A, as you know, I think that now Rocchi will be forced to new guidelines.
And still, going back to Massa CL Play Off with that evident missed YC in second half, I can confirm that Rosetti couldn't be satisfied... the problem with Italian referees is that in serie A they don't use such approach because in case they do, they can't officiate some teams again... it will be very entertaining for me to watch the outcome if this trend by UEFA, hopefully, will be confirmed...
