  1. The classic appointment for Makkelie with Italian teams against a Spanish one. The home team is clearly favorite team for qualification but after first leg score, I think we will see a nice and maybe open match.
About Turpin in London, committee appointed him despite of the clear mistake he made in his previous game, meaning that mostly the assignments are already planned and when a "warm up" is given in another competition before Champions League sonorous match, it's unlikely to see a change. Only at the moment, the French wouldn't have deserved that, but of course committee didn't look at this.
Very open game in London as well, after first leg score.

  2. Marciniak for atletco Madrid vs inter Milan

    1. This seems the obvious choice indeed.
As discussed before, more difficult to predict the name for Dortmund. Orsato, Taylor, Soares Dias and Kruzliak all seem reasonable options. Maybe even Nyberg, but he had Dortmund on MD6, therefore less likely IMO.

  3. My prediction for Borussia Dortmund - PSV is Kruzliak, this would be also consistent with first leg assignment (Jovanovic). Second option: Soares Dias. Less likely to see Orsato, but still possible.
In Madrid we can think about Marciniak, the big surprise would be the Slovakian there (quite unlikely, though).

    4. Hi Mohammed - unfortunately I've been much busier in the last twelve months than anticipated, therefore I haven't been able to start a new competition. However, with a little more time on my hands now, I have prepared a small new blog looking at matches from Confederations Cup 2003; hopefully, this weekend I can begin analysing the matches.

  4. I don't understand Turpin's previous appointment in UECL whatsoever. Definitely unnecessary to sent him there. There were a lot of other options suitable for that game.

  5. Even though I don't like his refereeing style, Makkelie will get this year CL final if he performs well.

  6. OT:

    Liverpool-City

    Dying minutes,Doku's challenge on MaCallister..

I dont know how that's not enough for a penalty...

Is there anyone who can make it simple for me?

  7. Michael Oliver had a poor performance in Liverpool vs Man City. Got the penalty correct. However, Walker should have had 4 yellows.

Then a huge huge error at the end from Oliver and VAR Stuart Attwell. Clear penalty, high foot straight to the chest in the box

    1. Unfortunately I think Attwell bottled that because of the occation, he might have advised a VAR review if it was in let's say the 33rd minute of Crystal Palace against Burnley but he didn't have the guts to do it in the last minute of a potantial title decider. Extremely worrying for English refereeing considering Attwell is by far their best VMO

      Delete
    2. My reaction was (and still is) penalty, but Attwell is stuck there. Whichever way he gives it there’ll be uproar, therefore correct to clear it.

    3. I disagree, no one can complain if thats given

Here the penalty area incident, I think that according to VAR, based on the frame they show, it was a fair action on the ball by defender...

      Delete
    5. Reminder Michael Oliver sent Romero off when he got the ball and the Curtis Jones red card earlier this season when the ball was played first.

      Delete
    6. In my opinion Oliver was very good, the last situation was the only one that can be discussed. Walker maybe should have get yellow but there was not a one clear place to give it.

      Delete
    7. @Chefren There are important distinctions to be made about winning the ball and playing the ball here, I also think the challenge should be considered reckless which means it should be a foul either way

@M_ The tackle on Salah in the 75th minute was most definitely a "clear place to give it"

      Delete
    8. Oliver was not poor at all, ridiculous assertion. He contributed to what was a great game by playing some good advantages and his overall foul detection was very good. The last moment will grab much attention, I can see both sides to it and I think in that case it's right to stick with on-field decision.

      Delete
    9. Winning the ball and touching the ball I should say*

      Delete
    10. For me is a clear penalty to Liverpool. Attwell is not good VAR. Sorry !

      Delete
    11. What about this tackle in Brighton & Hove Albion vs Nottingham Forest? Referee Michael Salisbury, VAR Craig Pawson

      https://streamable.com/cqfc1h

      Delete
    12. Should be a red card, these two where in the VAR truck though for the Calvert Lewin one in the FA Cup which was overturned, so may have played on their minds

      Delete
    13. Good decision by Chris Kavanagh this afternoon however to send off John McGin for either Violent Conduct or SFP. There was clearly no attempt to play the ball, too often these are given as YC in the premier league. Correctly supported on VAR by Tim Robinson

      Delete
    14. No intervention by VAR in Brighton & Hove Albion - Nottingham Forest should be correct, I think.
Expected decision is red card for the high force of the tackle and how player enters in contact with opponent, endangering the safety. But if YC given, still a few chances to support for the point of contact (could have been by far worse).
I know this can sound a bit contradictory, but it's very difficult to find consistency about SFP with VAR.

    15. I would like to discuss it from a different angle - the positioning of the ref. Oliver stood close enough to the incident, but was behind MacAllister who blocked his sight regarding the Doku's challenge for the ball. Had Oliver been inside the penalty-area , he would have seen the incident from another angle - either the coming-together of the players or from behind Doku - which might have resulted with a different decision. However, Attwell would have accepted any decision made by Oliver as all are deemed acceptable and not "an obvious error".

      Delete
    16. Good decision for me, Doku plays and gets the ball, while Liverpool player kinda looks for the foul. Not sure there is a big contact here, even if the boot is high.

      Delete
    17. Even ex refs like Clattenburg and Dean have said it that it was a penalty.

So Liverpool have been victims of serious refereeing mistakes in their 3 big matches(Arsenal,Tottenham and City).

If Liverpool dont win title,we can pin point that referees had huge contributions in that.

  8. Quite many problems with fitness/positioning and foul detection by Makkelie for now...
Around 10' missed YC, not even a foul whistled.
Bad positioning before 2-0 goal, Lobotka angry with him for getting in the way.
20' possible RC missed; YC given after 1 minute to Christensen for sure whispered by VAR.

    1. 10' probably. a foul, yellow perhaps would be too harsh here

  9. After the messy situation with the (correctly) delayed Offside call by AR2 in Barcelona, his flag has come up very quick in 2 situations now...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. How was the flag "correctly" delayed? The offside was clear. The cut of the grass made it obvious and it was at least a full yard offside. And then, the flag and whistle came WELL after the shot on goal. Makkelie would have known during the whole build-up that this was offside and could have told his AR2 to put the flag up earlier right after the shot. Instead he waited and watched the whole play develop, right up to the unnecessary (and dangerous) challenge.

Sorry, Makkelie had a good match. But this incident was very poor all-around. Flag was absolutely unnecessarily delayed. And then Makkelie could have been proactive and whistled earlier, preventing the challenge and injury (and yellow card!).

      Delete
    2. I think Makkelie was waiting to see if Barcelona would win the ball, because then he can apply an advantage - instead of start-stopping the game for signaled offsides every time. UEFA wants the game to flow.

      Delete
  10. It is a challenging game for Makkelie, after the two goal scored by Barcelona, I thought that the tie had definitely ended in favor of Spanish side, but it wasn't the case. He was in full control in first half. I will always like his very calm and elegant gestures during the game, staying cool while the context is hard. See when the player from Barcelona was complaining, in such situation the Dutch referee is able to remain on his sphere, without allowing a dangerous connection with players. Then, if the player continues, he books him.
If the game goes on in this way, I think everything can happen in second half, still open to all results. Correct by VAR not to intervene for the possible red card, should have been supported only if given by referee. In the end of first half, I think Makkelie realized cards were needed for the progress of the game.

  12. The key areas of attention in the first half besides the available good points:

fitness/positioning leads to hindering of players and the game. Too reactive instead of forward-looking.
Inconsistent in foul detection and disciplinary management.
Missing the valuable emphatic behavior and radiating an arrogant attitude. ( Not approachable!)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh gosh… something to check in Barcelona…

    ReplyDelete
  14. @Profref 'Missing emphatic behaviour' Arrogant attitude?' (Not approachable!?) Must say I disagree. Have you seen how many times the (especially Barcelona players) are 'showing' an imaginary card. If Makkelie was not 'emphatic' he would have had to hand out 4-5 cards for either 'mocking the ref' or 'telling him what to do'. These players are 100pct professional and are trying to tweek every single decision (Yamal/Osimhen etc) in their favour. Makkelie not having it.

    1. My view:
Neglecting emotions and waving them away is the contrary of emphatic behavior. Showing understanding with some humor without agreeing underlines a strong character. In general, arrogance very often suppresses insecurity.

      Delete
    2. I think that I have a different idea of "arrogance". For being arrogant, you must do something against another person, right? So, rather acting in a bad way and showing unfair feelings. This isn't the case. I watched Makkelie by years, he is never arrogant, what he does is what I explained above. Isolating himself from the context for taking important decisions in crucial moments, for doing that, if you are able to isolate from the external emotions, you make a great job. Pressure is not felt at all. You could argue that you can't referee a game being always isolated, and that's right, but I think that the Dutch referee isolates himself only in the key moments, then he changes and he has also communication with players. The best referee is the one who understands when to apply a certain style and when another one. If players act in a way, referee can give the most appropriate answer in terms of game management.

      Delete
    3. Chefren with all respect but arrogance means in my view and perception having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one's own importance or abilities and that is what I see and perceive. Of course, this is subjective and my view with which one can/may disagree.
Watching the Dutch competition for more than 20 years I am quite well aware of the national Dutch view.
What you describe is in my simple view the tactical approach of a referee during the match, called game management. Be there if needed and not seen if not necessary.
It's nice to watch and observe from the sideline with the common goal of improving the performance of our refs.

      Delete
    4. Makkelie is withdrawn, not arrogant.

    1. 50' Attacker already losing balance before the touch by defender, who doesn't hit ball, but the touch is not enough to say that this was a clear penalty, so I find correct by VAR to support. In case of penalty whistled, should have been confirmed as well. The attitude of the attacker is rather looking for the call, too exaggerate body reaction (but this wouldnt have changed the decision of a rather supportable penalty).

      Delete
    2. Here ref called corner, the defender never touches so the ball. Isn’t it a clear and obvious mistake?
I would have agreed with you if ref hadn’t given the corner

      Delete
    3. I think the referee didn't see it and let the game flow. I would expect him to make a short sprint to be closer to the situation but he was just continue jogging.

  16. I know Uefa aren't that fussed about dissent (unless a manager), DtR, waving imaginery cards, SPA YCs unless super obvious, or added time for goals, but 1 added in the first half (with plenty of stoppages) and 3 added in the second in London does seem extremely light. The gap between England and Uefa has never seemed larger...

  18. Strong performance by Makkelie, with also good decisions from the assistants. Complete control and acceptance from the players. No protests whatsoever. All important decisions were correct. A few minor flaws, but those are insignificant in the grand scheme of things. UEFA will be very pleased with this performance. No one can criticize the refereeing, and that's what they want to see.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with all the key decisions being correct. However, I don’t like that he waits for VAR before making a decision too many times. But maybe the ref committee doesn't care about that.

  19. Good performance so far from Clement Turpin, allowing the game to flow, not allowing players to just fall over. Both coaches rightly booked. Good decision to dissalow Arsenal goal for foul by Havertz.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. +1. Very good Turpin. Good foul detection, good card choice, confident in his decisions yet happy to engage with players when necessary. I thought that was a perfect example of how to referee such a game. Well done to the French referee and his team!

      Delete
    2. It was a generally good performance in a normal difficulty game, but his foul selection went from 'keeping the game flowing by rightly refusing non-fouls' to sth genuinely haphazard and unpredictable as the match got older. Very good management skills as always by the Frenchman these days. The key decisions were wiping out the goal for a Havertz foul (correct), and only a warning for pushing (S.) Conceicao to the same player, which was probably apt but is worth discussing, as such a blatant physical contact with a coach should, in principle, be a red card. So: it was a good performance but the level of difficulty was absolutely at the normal-tier, especially for CL, R16, ET+Pen, etcetera. I didn't watch the penalty competition and afterwards but it seems there was some trouble after the kicks were completed?

      Delete

  20. I know that it is not the primary task of a referee to make the game attractive, but we must all admit this certainly is a quality of Makkelie. Being as lenient as he could be, and at the same time, never the feeling that the game could boil over.
Players accept his leadership, line and foul detection.
No dissents at all. Very open, intense, fun, challenging. A joy to watch.
On a technical level, some room for improvement. AR2 was a bit off in 1st half.
2nd half was flawless. Penalty correctly rejected imo. That was not a clear-cut foul, rather a smack and the attacker initiating. It would be a scandal if whistled. Barca goal correctly disallowed for offside. Napoli will mainly talk about the missed opportunities. Is it the best performance by Makkelie’s team I've ever seen? No. But UEFA will be happy with the 'big picture'.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The yellow card for Andreas Christensen could surely have been avoided by a quicker offside flag by AR2, was such a clear offside
