  1. Interesting to see a swiss VAR in Molde with a swiss observer. Is that normal?

    1. Yes possible, we saw Rosetti several times with Italian VARs in some games. Possible that VAR and observer will travel together for that game.

    2. Thank you. :)
Probably a little problematic because the observer is also judging the work of the VAR isn't he? So he should be absolutely neutral. Also for VARs the grades can be very important because they want to be part of the refereeing crew of a big tournament. Especially San will have hopes in the future to be VAR on EUROs or even World Cups.

  2. Good appointment for Craig Pawson

  3. I think Ağayev got the biggest match, especially with the AEK-PAOK clash this summer in mind. Personally curious too see Jorgji in Amsterdam

    1. I didn't notice something extra ordinary in this set, so I didn't comment in detail. To me all regular choices, and, differently from EL, all Category 1, this is reasonable given how the three competitions are considered by committe.
I think the most sonorous assignment looking at the teams involved is for Jorgji in Amsterdam, second game for him in this KO stage, good progress.
In terms of potentially very challenging duties, I think both Ağayev and Pawson should be mentioned. Games in Greece and Croatia can be difficult to handle. In this regard, UEFA should definitely wonder what to do after Taylor, Oliver and Pawson, it seems they are the only three English referees trusted, without any attempt to create at least a solid new Category 1, that's very worrying, if you ask me.

  5. Jorgji with two sendings off for second YCs.
    Aston Villa: https://streamin.me/v/c950c94b
    Ajax: https://streamin.me/v/95d9e625
Both are correct, first SPA, second reckless, but in the second incident maybe he didn't remember it was second YC. RC with a certain delay.

    1. I have doubts on the first YC of AJA#47 however. It was the opponent lunging in with speed and the Ajax player hardly to blame for the contact that occurred.

    2. Otherwise a pretty weak performance from Jorgji. Very inconsistent foul selection and he could have avoided those RCs as he gave really unnecessary yellow cards earlier in the game. Both teams were pretty irritated by his decisions.
Just some examples of wrong and not really understandable YCs, just look at all those cards in 64th, 69th and 76th minute.
Especially I would recommend to look at the card for AV22 in 76th minute for elbowing? Few mins later in 80th minute for Ajax2 a rather clear elbow offence close to reckless was not even whistled.
You could notice lots of late calls and I think it was due to wrong positioning, he was hesitant what to whistle for and what not.

So it's weird, but the two RCs seems correct, but in the end I think that was very far from a good performance from an experienced category1 referee. (Even though I think the RC for AV4 could be easily also a freekick for the defender as I think the first pull was made by him)

    3. Thanks for reporting the minutes, I will check carefully the incidents!

    4. I think Ajax player Akpom dragged Konsa and only after that it was a foul by Villa defender

    5. @Chefren I see the incident at 82 min as a straight RC for DOGSO... without the foul #10 Ajax has the ability to re-gain possession and be 1 v 1 with the goalkeeper. For me the two outside defenders cannot impact play here.
I would almost suggest VAR becoming involved for a review for a straight RC even??

  6. Correct VAR intervention at 90+2 mins on USG-FB game, for a handball & penalty. João Pedro da Silva Pinheiro didn't see live. Overall good game for Portuguese...

  7. Mediocre performance by Agayev

So many missed fouls, criterium was non existent and no wonder that both teams were both not satisfied with his performance.

    1. I agree. He struggled to establish a clear line in foul detection throughout the game, and I have to admit I struggled alongside him, just trying to figure out the exact criterium he had in this game. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that all the "hot" moments in the game were the result of players' visible frustration by this lack of clear line. It also led to some YCs for dissent, which were fully correct isolatedly, but probably could have been avoided in the first place. All in all, no major mistakes, but not the most positive general impression IMO.
