    Man United vs Liverpool

    58th min,no clear 2nd YC for Fernandes.
Once foul there was whistled, there is no other option than to show YC.

Case there was than Fernandes alread, had YC,so Brooks obviously did not want to sent him off.

    1. And now 2-2 and we're going to ET.
Funny,if Lpool lose, that will be already 4 -5th game this season that has been hugely influenced by referees.

    2. "Once foul there was whistled, there is no other option than to show YC."

      Why?

Reckless is a judgment decision. We are not robots. Now that I've seen the video, I'd argue quite strenously that Fernandes' actions do not meet any of our instructions or any of the sport's expectations about what "reckless" is.

I don't understand the "no option" suggestion.

  3. Absolutely clear 2nd YC! No excuse for Brooks. Didn't want to give a RC in a big game

    1. Should be this one, I think:
      https://streambug.org/cv/12b7f6
Very clear YC for reckless challenge.

    2. There is 0% in the world that that tackle is a 2CT in any big match from any referee in England. I would also suggest there's close to 0% chance that's a 2CT at a EURO or World Cup KO match. Or a UCL one.

I think people need to get a grip.

When I read about this, I was expecting MUCH worse.

The commentator is largely correct here. Fernandes is coming in to block the shot. His foot is off the ground because it must be. He arrives nearly simultaneous with the shot. There is then contact. It's "high" because of where the legs are. But there's no malice in Fernandes' challenge. No locked leg. No studs as a mode of impact. No actual force in the tackle (he's trying to block the ball). The result is because the shooting player kicks through (as is his right, of course).

I think the result dictates that you have to call a careless foul on Fernandes. That's what football expects. But a 2CT for that? This is the kind of incident where referees ruin games. No one expected it.

      Delete
    3. Why would you say that this isbthe the kind of incident where referees ruin the game?

You mean to tell me that this action by Bruno is not worthy of a YC?

It sure is,and he as a player should be more careful with challenges and with his talking as he has already been booked.

This was the case where ref did not want to put himself as the main guy in this match so he was lenient there.

And you talk about refereeing in England, you need to understand that this year they give away bookings for much less.

I think that out of all 5 big leagues England is number in YC's and RC's which was unthinkable 10 years ago.

So to say that any ref from England would not show 2nd YC is something that before this year was a fact.

But again, this year they were booking players for much less.

Another decision that goes against Liverpool in big match.
This, penalty vs City, handball vs Arsenal, offside given vs Tottenham.

If there was any other manager other than Klopp, then we would see every match rants and protest againts refs.

Imo,missed RC and the only reason that's not being talked about is because Liverpool can only blame themselves for lost lead.

    4. I can see why its not been given and but it should have been SYC. This season premier league referees have no consistency with yellow cards. You get some referees who throw cards round like confetti (Anthony Taylor, Rob Jones) and others (Michael Oliver and John Brooks) who keep them in the pockets.

Many really soft second yellows, many fairly obvious yellows not given

      Delete
    5. Just now seeing the replies here.

I am asked "why I think it's a referee ruin[ing] the game" after I spend an entire paragraph on the merits of the decision and why I think it's only a careless foul.

      I already said why. Because I don't think it's a yellow card.

Then no counter-argument about WHY it's a yellow card. Just that players "need to be more careful after they've already been booked." Okay, maybe. But that doesn't make every subsequent foul cautionable.

To repeat. He's blocking the shot. His leg is off the ground, as it must be. He arrives nearly simultaneous with the shot. No malice. No locked or straight leg. No studs as mode of contact. No significant force from Fernandes (as the force generated is from the shooter).

So how about this: other than "he's already on a yellow!" explain to me, citing the LOTG and our instructions, what makes this challenge "reckless?"

  4. Terrible scenes after Trabzonspor vs Fenerbahçe game. Fenerbahçe players were attacked by home team supporters and some of them fought back. Oosterwolde even kicked one of the supporters in the head when he was already on the ground... Btw, the referee was Halil Umut Meler.

    1. What to say. It is logical that as a player you are very shocked and that this is very very frightening. It is also logical that you defend yourself, but that kick from Oosterwolde can be fatal for the "fan" on the ground...

    2. After yesterday's match, we can say that Meler's 2024 dream is over.

  5. Eredivisie: sc Heerenveen - Feyenoord
Is it a score? Is offside because the ball played by a defensive player is uncontrollable?
    https://youtu.be/-TM5s9bRZiw?t=1

After Almere City - Feyenoord and PEC - Volendam, this is the third case in Eredivisie in recent weeks (all final decisions were offside). For me, this situation is technically exactly the same as the moment at PEC - Volendam.

At PEC - Volendam, two defensive players had a bit of a collision and could not control the ball. This time the defensive player went into a duel against the attacking player and as a result didn't control of the ball. This is how I feel.

Referee Dennis Higler explains (Not the exact wording, but the words that Feyenoord's trainer Slot heard): it was not a new situation because the player did not control the ball. He got it on his shoulder.

I feel like the KNVB-referees only focus on whether the defensive player 《as a result》 was able to control the ball or not, and pay little attention to why he wasn't able to control the ball.

The important point in this rule should be whether the ball itself is controllable for the defending player. If a ball that could have been controllable becomes uncontrollable due to the actions of a defensive player, it should be considered not offside. I think this KNVB's interpretation is wrong. What about other countries and organizations?

  6. A moment that may provide some interesting insight into positioning and body orientation at drop ball.
    Eredivisie: sc Heerenveen - Feyenoord:
    https://youtu.be/-TM5s9bRZiw?t=129

After checking the distance of the Feyenoord player (Ueda), Dennis Higler turns to the Heerenveen player (Van Ottele) and throws the ball. He then allowed the Heerenveen players, who had been off the field for treatment, to return. In that split second, the three lined up, Higler blocking Van Ottele's view and making it easier for Ueda to get closer.

It's not Higler's mistake by any means, but his positioning had a lot of influence in this moment, and maybe he could have done better?

  7. Eredivisie: PSV- FC Twente:
Once again, everyone on both sides and neutrals were pissed at Joey Kooij. The problem is not just that Twente's goal was canceled due to a slight contact within 5 meters.

    Analist Kenneth Perez's comment
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNfqGM9pL8o

'He stands looking at it among five people and decides after about five seconds: I'm going to blow the whistle for this. What goes wrong here? That he is a very bad referee. On top of that, he has a bad appearance. Everyone around football is annoyed by him.'

'He makes very crazy decisions. And then he acts even tougher at the end by giving a yellow card for a throw-in that takes too long and then very ostentatiously announces that a whole minute will be added. Then he has some attention for himself again. A referee is there to direct the game. Preferably inconspicuous. But if you continually cause irritation in both parties...'

'You see everything and everyone wondering what he is doing. That's almost every match with him. He wants to show character and that is counterproductive. It's all so contrived.'

    1. Guys, I swear I've seen this exact same discussion between the pro-Kooij and anti-Kooij camps already 3-4 times in this blog!

I don't have an opinion cuz I don't remember ever watching him in UEFA but I don't think there's a Second Cat referee whose (domestic) performances produced as many discussions on this page as him.

    1. Just to clarify why comments were deleted, but I think you are surely intelligent to understand that! This is not the place for such discussions, I mean, if you write that against another country in a place where this doesn't have any interest, I think you make something that you wouldn't like to see against your country, right? So it is not a question of being in favor of somebody, just respect for the blog. We can discuss the assignment, but the rest should be out. Hope it's clear, nothing against you, as I always write, I would do same thing in case of contrary message...

Hard to think about a deliberate play, should be assessed as deflection, so the position of the arm can still be punished, I think VAR wouldn't have intervened, but some people can disgree on the penalty call and tipically when a referee whistles this on the pitch is not exactly aware of how the touch with hand / arm happened....

  19. To the experts here: How is it decided which jersey the referees wear in friendlies? Obviously it depends on the competition, but how is it handled in friendly games? Manzano was wearing Adidas and FIFA badge in Lyon, the referee in Denmark Macron and UEFA....anybody have an idea or do they just wear what they like best in friendlies?

    1. This is absolutely unclear. Since both were friendlies withall UEFA national teams, I think that Gil Manzano should have worn UEFA badge. These friendlies are centralized by UEFA.
Before the introduction of UEFA badge (and kit), all these friendlies were officiated with the classic FIFA kit and badge, in m opinion the recent conflict between UEFA and FIFA led to some confusion. One could argue that for some reasons Gil Manzano didn't have the disponibility of a UEFA kit.

  20. Gil Manzano with a missing RC for Mbappe yesterday for a retaliation kick (69'). YC was given.
Maybe you can argue around common sense in a friendly, but IMO it was too much to ignore.
Otherwise he was very lenient, which led to some protests by the teams.

    2. Gil Manzano missed a few fouls, but his leniant line let the game flow. Mbappes foul... Well, could be red, but you can even argue for YC, esp. Yin a friendly match. Overall Gil Manzano still convincing imo

  22. Hey any reason as to why they wear Adidas referee kits instead of the Macron ones from UEFA?

    1. Guess it's because they are FIFA and not UEFA friendlies (?)

Referees in intra-UEFA friendlies like De Burgos (PORSWE), Lindhout (DENSUI) or Lambrechts (NEDSCO) were wearing UEFA Macron kits. Kardesler in RUSSRB was wearing Adidas, though. And Rubiel Vázquez in inter-confederal VENITA used American Official Sports USSF kits

  28. Chiffi is not performing well. He whistled three penalties, first one in favour of Türkiye was a clear handball given by the help of VAR. Second penalty is too soft. Third one he didn't whistle on field, he was very close, Türkiye scored a goal. VAR invited Chiffi for OFR. He cancelled Turkiye's goal and gave penalty. To me it is a penalty but not a clear mistake that VAR should intervene. If the last one is a penalty, lot of tackles inside the penalty area should be awarded as penalty.

    1. Definitely a very poor performance by Chiffi and the team as well, at least AR2 involved in the second penalty decision with a wrong offside call and anticipated flag for unknown reasons (looked like he didn't remember there was VAR in this game?).

      First penalty, handball:
      https://streambug.org/cv/0a72a5
Very difficult to spot, opposite angle than Chiffi point of view, clear penalty.

Second penalty, wrong offside before and very soft whistle:
      https://streambug.org/cv/8f9216
      https://streambug.org/cv/c15c36
You can argue that if Chiffi had followed AR, without whistling penalty before the wrong flag, then very likely giving this one wouldn't have happened, hard to consider this as clear and obvious mistake. Possible option maybe OFR but then no penalty decision.

      Third penalty, very evident contact:
      https://streambug.org/cv/a8b27c
One of the last replays shows indeed that Chiffi was in the best position to spot even the low contact. By far clearer penalty than the one called before... and then goal on the other side annulled.

I must say that after some good times, Chiffi seems to be back in the rather very poor form he had before becoming FIFA referee, and he seems not an option for UEFA progress, at least at moment...

  30. The Spain vs Brazil friendly was a rather interesting one with many fouls called, many irritations and much dissenting behaviour. This task appeared to be too much of a challenge for Portuguese Antonio Nobre tbh.

    1. Shocking Referee performance. First penalty is a complete dive, I don't see any contact at all. VAR should intervene here if it was in use. Second penalty is soft but supportable. Third is correct. Overall he had no control at all of proceedings.

I know its only a friendly but 1. why no var in this game when there is in other games
      2. Brazil had 2 Portuguese referees in a row

    2. I must agree with EnglandREF. Nobre looked to be lost in the game, starting from the first challenge, a few seconds after the kick off. In all three penalty situations, the players used their skills to get the whistle, another very experienced referee would have faced the incidents in a more appropriate way.
First one is full simulation, second is a contact used by attacker deliberately continuing against opponent, and live simulation perception as well (but this wouldn't have been removed by VAR). The third penalty is particular situation, while defender is standing up from the ground, he commits penalty, but rather, it was absolutely possible to avoid this contact.
Out of curiosity, Nobre with the RFEF vanishing spray, he didn't bring with him his own from Portugal... and yes, strange that this game was without VAR, given that now friendlies of such level are all with VAR. Not only, but also Portugal referees are always appointed with VAR in all competitions. Looks like this was a more than poorly arranged assignment.

    3. It seems there are also some official complaints by Brazilian football federation and the president, I can't say that he is wrong. He said that he was surprised no VAR in this game even if friendly. Brazil can ensure a full coverage of VAR including youth and womens football, so he wa rather shocked to see that for a so important friendly UEFA didn't manage it.
Nevertheless, it's absolutely crazy that among all friendlies, played with VAR, this had to happen exactly in this game, the only top friendly without VAR for unknown reasons.
I think that UEFA makes a very poor impression here and this wasn't absolutely expected.
