Overall, it seems there isn't the same focus by committee as it was on previous matchday. We have almost all regular observers, unless some exceptions. Some observers could indicate a young referee in development (Kapitanis in Dortmund before the others), while the most interesting assignment for me should be the one in Prague. This game is the most suitable for a debut and indeed we will have Trefoloni, at moment very important observer for UEFA. I think it's possible there will be a referee getting his first CL game. If one can say that now all games must be considered more important than previous matchdays, I think that committee could continue in making appointments made on the name of the teams, even more in the case of the French side, at moment having an excellent progress and playing without any pressure. So for this reason I find the match in Czech Republic perfect, under this point of view.
To follow, on paper, other games suitable for a debut are in my opinion Shakthtar - Young Boys (but the Scottish observer here suggests definitely a "contrary" choice by committee) and Slovan Bratislava - Dinamo Zagreb, but here Garibian could indicate an experienced referee. I think less expected debuts in the games with the Dutch teams, PSV and Feyenoord (especially the game against Girona for the former team), because they always play a certain style of footbal.
Then, into the Inter - Arsenal question, it's definitely interesting that
there isn't still a choice by committee. We can speculate, but no more than that. Last game involving Inter had a very particular progress, I think almost all people expected a rather easy win by Italian side, and Oliver was read as a clear overappointment. The game showed the contrary, with a very open tie, decided only at the end, so now no doubts this one will be even more challenging on paper, with Arsenal in Milan. A very big name should be expected, but I really don't know why they have still to decide. I don't believe there will be a committee member for an "underappointment" because then this wouldn't be consistent with sending Oliver in Switzerland in the previous game of the Italian tem. We will see.
The observers of the Nations League games in November are also released, it was more or less on the same day as the games in UCL/UEL/UECL.
DeleteI am curious what causes the delay in Inter-Arsenal. They should have a name in mind. Perhaps we can see a referee returning from injury (Gil Manzano or Marciniak). In last round, we noticed a delay in Leipzig-Liverpool and it happened to be Schärer, a regular name. It’s strange, but could be something very simple (just waiting for a confirmation by a local FA, the observer or whatsoever :))
Very difficult to make predictions. Taylor is an easy prediction in MD4. I guess we can see a couple of Spaniards in this round as there weren’t many Spanish crews in MD3. If form matters, Turpin should be expected in UCL again, whereas Letexier could be in Europa League. But I’m not sure if form really matters if there are so many games to be played.
Moreover, it’s quite a stretch to appoint no referees that made an appearance in MD3. I guess we’ll see the same names again, and some Elites might be needed in the Europa League (couple of challenging games there, e.g. the game in Turkey).
Regarding debuts in UCL, perhaps Sozza? Sylwestrzak is another name under focus, but I’d expect a more important observer to accompany him.
Kovacs was my choice 2 get 2 back-to-back CL matches purely because he was out in MD1&2.
DeleteManzano back moves him into a MD4 fixture for sure IMO - whilst there is still no news on Marciniak or Jovanovic.
Taylor is also a certainty for a Md4 fixture too and in-fact all Spanish Elite could very well get a match after none in MD3.
There is probably more chance that the officials that got a EL MD3 fixture gets a CL MD4 appointment (Turpin & Gozubuyuk).
You would also like to think that the English FA and UEFA looking at the development of their Category 1 officials as Taylor's replacement and so I would be amazed if they don't start putting either Kavanagh or Brooks on CL games this season.
It's also clear that Guida & Massa have been struggling which may mean further Italian debuts (Sozza being the likely choice).
Mariani maybe pushed into Elite at the next window because of this too.
Given the limited options, it wouldn't surprise me, to see Kovács again. I don't want to be overly salty, but if a referee is "punished" for something (I don't care what it was), and then compensated with back-to-back games, then the punishment was almost useless (and symbolic) in the first place. Almost like children who are punished for a week and don’t get any candy’s, but after the week they get half a bag lol :)
DeleteRef88: Remember that we only got rumours and not any official confirmation. In principle though, I agree completely with you wrote and see it the same way.
DeleteFour-part series by the KNVB, "Behind the whistle". Nice insight and also a good method to recruit referees I think.
ReplyDeleteI’m glad that they subtitled the VAR audio, so that we can at least figure out the context. It’s possible to use the automatic subtitle settings in English, but it’s a bit messy when referees talk fast :)

Tohver retired, Buquet demoted to Ligue 2.
ReplyDeleteCan I ask who are at the moment on the top tier of Category 1, even if not candidate for promotion to elite?
Tohver situation is particular, one can call this one as "half-retirement". He stated that he will retire as "professional referee", but he will continue both in Estonia and UEFA as long as it will be possible, but surely this will mean by far less focus by committee on him. This also explains why he wasn't given Champions League like other very experienced Category 1 (if committee had already some clues about that), and, at the same time, why he got many games even after some rather poor performances (they appreciate the status of professional referee over the others). Maybe some Estonian readers can add more, I remember a question a few days ago coming from the country, about a possible CL debut, well, now after this news, it seems that the Estonian will hardly get a further chance, but maybe appointed less than before.
DeleteAbout Buquet, we can't deny that he has been a very long lasting Category 1 referee, with big experience, but never making a significant step, also because he was always ranked as nr. 3 o 4 from his country, having the Elite referees ahead. Nevertheless, for sure a loss of experience for UEFA.
Pawson and in part Stefanski could have been described as belonging to this Category, but they were demoted. So I think now, having to list the most experienced Cat. 1, but without chance for achieving more, we must mention as first name for sure Jug, the Slovenian years and years ago also had a chance to join Elite, but he failed. Then, there was a rather long period without too many assignments, but now he is again always appointed as extremely experienced referee from the Category 1. Stavrev is the next name to mention after the Slovenian, with a very long experience and CL group stage games as well.
OT: I don't comment on the blog that often anymore because the required signing in means that I have to log out of all of my many Google accounts every time I want to post. Anyway, I don't think Anthony Taylor has had a good first half in Arsenal-Liverpool: 1. He called a foul on van Dijk's kick out against Havertz but no YC. 2. He missed handling in the box from a player on the ground right in front of him. 3. He missed a hard foul by Nunez bowling over Saka. In the second half, he called a dangerous play due to an apparent high kick, when the replay showed that the boot wasn't that high (Taylor signaled that it was face high, which it wasn't) but rather the ball got kicked into Trossard's face. And he missed Nunez pushing down a player with his shoulder to a player's back. I thought José María Sánchez Martínez did great in the El Clasico, as did Cesar Ramos in the Uruguay-Colombia Copa America semi, which was a very difficult match. Both referees have that no-nonsense body language and facial expressions that emote a confidence repected by the players.
ReplyDeleteAfter the difficult evening in Madrid, an exceptional performance by Guida today in Inter - Juventus (assignment already published on Wednesday before the Champions League match).
ReplyDeleteIt certainly took great strength to forget everything and face the refereeing duties today.
Great show in the game with two teams that thought about playing football, and this helped the referee. It hadn't happened for a very long time to see such a final score in the "Derby d'Italia". He was accurate and present in key moments such as two penalties awarded in the first half without needing VAR. Difficult to detect the second, where he also understood that a handball by the player who had been fouled, was chronologically subsequent, and he explained that to the players, before knowing the final verdict by VAR (all confirmed). Always high level management of the players, at least for Italian standards, it is a shame that sometimes he has these failures from a technical point of view, really precluding him from getting more. Wanting to nitpick, however, in my opinion a yellow card should rather have been given in the 3' minute for a reckless challenge but Guida's choice was clear, not wanting to give cards so early. Following this, another yellow card in my opinion should also have been given for the second penalty (obvious kick to the opponent), but as we know in this case whoever does that, is a hero. Reckless in the penalty area is no longer looked at. Finally, the fourth official should have managed the coaches better, they are always allowed to do everything and also entering the field. But this have been an already lost battle for years in Serie A. Calling fourth officials "passive" is even an understatement.

ReplyDeleteSupportable decision by Letexier, due to point of contact.
In case of YC, VAR wouldn't have intervened (intensity).
From what we could see in the clip, there is one conclusion: Letexier - the best sight, poor understanding of the situation - careless at most - and the worst decision.

Martinez Munuera disagrees with VAR for RC OFR in Mallorca - Athletic. Interesting situation, Mallorca's player played the ball and then leg, but my opinion - it's a red card
ReplyDeletehttps://streambug.org/cv/138a79
DeleteWell-played Martinez Munuera for sticking to his decision after the OFR. There is no way you can describe this action as "excessive force" in my opinion (you can see the Mallorca player never 'intensifies' his studs for the opponents leg, rather the contrary). To be honest the person who is later to this duel is the Bilbao player and 'play on' would be the optimal decision for me.
DeleteI can also support MM in this instance, but I don't really agree with Mikael. It's a clear yellow card and reckless challenge, but the force is just a bit below what I would call SFP. In case of red card on the field however, it must be supported by VAR.
Deletei agree with Mikael, there is a touch....but the player clearly wants to play the ball, the "foul" is nothing but unlucky and a natural bodytouch, clearly no red!
DeleteOT
ReplyDeleteBoth Taylor & Oliver have Saturday games in the PL. Taylor with his regular assistants whilst Dan Cook is still recovering from surgery.
Chris Kavanagh is VAR Saturday.
Jarred Gillett is VAR Saturday.
John Brooks is referee Saturday.
Stuart Attwell is VAR Saturday and has the Monday night game as referee (ruling him out I would suggest of CL duties).
David Coote is VAR Sunday - VAR duties possible for him (earliest likely Wednesday).
So, I would now suggest Taylor with Coote as VAR remains highly possible in PSG (Kavanagh or Brooks as 4th official).
I think it's also unlikely to see Kavanagh or Brooks on a debut CL this MD.
I agree with most, but I absolutely think Attwell can be VAR on Wednesday after refereeing on Monday. You would think it is to be avoided, but not impossible
DeleteYeah possible - Let's see!
DeleteDarren England have not a game for this week and also VAR..maybe the debut in conference league ?
DeleteSmall report about Halil Umut Meler's performance in the 'FIFA Intercontinental Cup' match between Al-Ahly Cairo and Al-Ain Abu Dhabi, played as a home match for the Egyptian side.
ReplyDelete2' - https://www.streambug.io/cv/969959
Play on in a DOGSO scenario, for me correct as the famous Al-Ain player Rahimi stops quite deliberately in order to generate a collision. Protesting for that, the Emirati side clearly mob the referee in a YC-worthy manner.
16' - https://www.streambug.io/cv/9ff20b
Penalty appeal by Al-Ahly, seems correct to play on.
47' - https://www.streambug.io/cv/8e6b9b
Poor control of the game by the Turkish ref. Having issued a clear verbal warning (the first of the 'two' offences was an 19' borderline-to-reckless tackle), he allows the game restarted without whistling nor allowing the admonished player to be back in position.
53' - https://www.streambug.io/cv/581d97
Correct yellow card for 'Lack of Respect (holding)'.
55' - https://www.streambug.io/cv/4ed7bc
Unfortunate incident where Meler interferes with an Al-Ain player during an attack, from which Al-Ahly counterattack and score a goal. In the aftermath of the goal, an away team player was cautioned.
59' - https://www.streambug.io/cv/c35f4a
It seems that Meler awarded a penalty for a second, before deferring to the offside decision of the linesman (Uyarcan; Curbay was the other assistant). No replays were shown of either the offside or handball.
66' - https://www.streambug.io/cv/93493e
After a holding and deliberate kicking offence in a SPA scenario, Meler ought (imo) to have given a yellow card to Al-Ain no9.
83' - https://www.streambug.io/cv/9514e7
Correct no penalty in a DOGSO scenario, then freekick awarded on the edge of the other penalty area. To me the latter it seemed rather a swan dive but hard to tell.
90' - https://www.streambug.io/cv/e89601
Penalty awarded to Al-Ahly and a yellow card to Al-Ain no4 (very likely DOGSO-attempt). Perhaps some referees would have decided differently (Mateu), but I guess for most people it is a pretty expected foul.
Overall: decent-ish performance but still areas to improve.
Thanks for the report!
DeleteIn my opinion the play on after a possible RC for DOGSO is rather the unexpected decision by Turksh referee and I'm in trouble to find arguments for saying that it's fully OK. It's true that attacker stops a bit himself to get this call, but it's also clear what defender does. Extremely risky situation, I think Di Paolo supported mostly due to intensity, but to me, even in the early minutes, this could have resulted in a red card for DOGSO. Did Meler make any assessment? Unacceptable then to see the dissenting gestures and VAR signals by Crespo, he should have been already sent off.
16' is another very interesting case, I think penalty to be confirmed only if whistled by referee, but it could be considered as rather normal collision. Again, one can stay with some doubts at the end. Maybe a classic case in which VS, the simplified VAR, would have been called by the team.
47' is another signal that sometimes the Turkish can make things complicated with very risky choices, it's not the first time, in some games I observed (I watched him many times in recent times) always the feeling that overall OK, but at the edge of losing control due to lack of attention for small details.
53' Correct decision.
55' Very unlucky indeed with the goal scored after the incident, maybe more reaction by Turkish to avoid the interfering would have been possible but still, one can't blame too much him. YC for the player mandatory, as he suddenly made that dissenting gesture against refeere.
59' He should have waited for the offside before, that's not the first time of a missed cooperation, it happened with his new AR2 in recent times. Here offside is correct so no need by VAR to show more, but it looks a wrong handball call, as in my opinion the ball touched the body and not the arm. Sometimes the Turkish is maybe too quick in his decisions making, when waiting a second more would already give him the correct solution.
66' Very clear YC missed.
83' Agree with you, correct to play on in the DOGSO scenario, here no doubts for me if compared to previous incident at the beginning of the game, while the subsequent free kick can be soft or even a simulation, but no final evidence.
90' Well, yiou could call this call only supportable as well, but here as you said, more people expecting a whistle, with that challenge from behind and player in penalty area. A referee would be more in trouble to say play on and he would put VAR in a very difficult situation (for me most of VARs here would intervene if not whistled).
At the end, situation in 2' stays as very controversial while mostly OK about the rest, it also seems that the Italian couple of VAR worked with the rathere "European / UEFA" approach, then the very well known FIFA one, intervening less, otherwise, that's too easy to say, one could have expected an intervention by them in both 2' and 16'. Even if it blongs to a tournament, these are rather "isolated" FIFA games and you surely don't have the same atmosphere of FIFA competitions, it seems obvious.
Did spanish referee mejuto gonzalez had the opportunity to referee Euro 2008 final if Spain didn't qualified for the final?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure he was - the rumours were at the time, that whomever won between ESP v ITA the losing referee would get the final - hence Rosetti.
DeleteMMG illuded to it on kill the referee video (when talking to Marc Batta) that he was surprised that he was overlooked for a CL final and then overlooked in the tournament at the QF stage (thinking that his performances were good enough for a KO match)
Interesting that he was surprised that he wasn't chosen for the champions league final that year considering he did it in 2005. Surely he knew he was unlikely to do it twice...
DeleteRosetti will be the observer in Ajax vs M. Tel-Aviv.
ReplyDeleteShould this be a referee on the edge of a UCL debut?
Well, given the game (Israeli team involved), I could think about the contrary, maybe a very young and unexperienced referee at his EL league-stage debut.
DeleteArmenia? :)
DeleteYes, you could be right about the nature of the game. Category 2 is possible. We can think of countries that have lack of category 1 or one of the refs at U-19 last summer
DeleteOT: Al nassr X Al hilal: Felix Zwayer (GER)
ReplyDeleteAl-Nassr - Al Hilal : Zwayer - Kempter, Dietz - Al Kharbosh - Dingert, Al Shammari
DeleteZwayer reffed it very well! Nine cautions issued (all correct) in a strong technical performance, and he was quite right in my book not to award a late penalty to Al-Hilal.
DeleteOFR: https://www.streambug.io/cv/6a9a95
1) No foul by the saving action of the goalkeeper - he gets a touch on the ball, and the contact is of a careless nature
2) No foul by the charging action of the goalkeeper - 'Mitro' turns his back into him quite purposefully
After 6yrs+ on from the famous episode, Zwayer was absolutely spot on (imo) in this Mitrovic ruling. To underline the comments made after (of all games 😅) Gibraltar-SanMarino, in terms of international performances I'd perceive a very clear gap between himself and Siebert/Stieler at the present time.
A penalty could have been given in my opinion and VAR would have supported. I think the reason for this OFR was just to show to players that Zwayer had seen, indeed there is a particular that Dingert, as UEFA VAR expert, surely knows. An OFR should always start with the key frame showing the evidence that it was possible penalty according to VAR, in this case you dont have that, but just the start of the video. That's how you have to work in such games, we can see Zwayer very busy with players before "being allowed" to go to monitor... and so you can describe this full scene only as "management".
DeleteOT
ReplyDeleteIf anyone is willing to check, there's a very interesting handball incident in the 40th minute of Sporting Lisbona - Estrella Armadora, Portuguese League.
It's a potential 'two handballs in a row' by #26 and #77 to make opposition to a header towards goal.
Referee Bruno Viera awards a penalty kick and sends off #26 for DOGSO.
Actually, #26 hits the ball with his arm while #77 with his chest, but the question is about DOGSO.
The referee is called to the screen for quite a long OFR and eventually changes the red card to yellow. He also makes the announcement about his decision.
Thanks for the report, will look for a video later today.
Deletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLbYqqJXM7o
DeleteCouldn't find more than this very short moment in the video.
Agree with the change of decision, one must always stop the action and make the assessment at the moment of the first foul, the one punished, so clearly the other defender behind could have made an easy (regular) save, therefore no RC for the "first" player, correct YC.
Goal rightly disallowed for offside or not?
