  1. Feyenoord protested to UEFA over the red card that Marciniak gave to Feyenoord's Read after the end of the match, but was turned down and he is given a one match suspension.

In my opinion, it was a red card that was given very easily, which is something that I have rarely seen at the top level in Europe in recent years. However, the response of UEFA's disciplinary committee is certainly understandable.

  2. Very good game for Eskas in Rotterdam. An Italian team at this sage is a remarkable achievement for a "different name". But, and I was already convinced about that, one must add that Inter is the least problematic team and the game against Dutch side is definitely not a top match. They were very lukcly to qualify for this stage, and I think they don't have big expectations (another argument for allowing a referee with relatively less experience than others at this level).
Then, again Massa with PSG, but in this case even with a committee member. Following Guida injury, now it seems that Massa is UEFA nr. 1 and it will be interesting to know who will attend the FIFA seminar for WC,now it's very close. Nevertheless, one could say that the French club seems to have a "selected pool" of officials inside UEFA, the appointments for the team from Paris are not that much different over the months. Here the easy game against Stuttgart allowed the Italian to be appointed again with them. Then, we should wait to know what about the future of the Italian referee.
The rest with Zwayer and Oliver are to me normal and regular assignments, it can be very challenging for the German after the famous and extremely challenging last display between the two clubs, officiated by Makkelie. But to me, it's not a full big match or something that could cost reputation, differently from the very big and hot clashes like Madrid's dery and so on. In the end you have always Spanish side as very favorite one. We'll see.
And about Oliver, perfect game for an English referee, being in the middle in a Bundesliga tie.

    1. Its not surprise the treatment of Massa. 8 CL games, while other big names has 5 or less cl games.

It isnt a big name Massa, not for a big tournament as WC2026.

If Massa is the standard of the uefa referees than is it quite problematic with the development of the Uefa.

But with Rosetti as a boss, it isnt surprising.

    2. Very useless comment. This is your opinion, without any support of facts.

    3. You can check how many CL matches he has whistled compare to other referees like Makkelie, Marciniak, Nyberg, Zwayer or Letexier.

It is his 8 cl match even so for Oliver. The treatment is different compare other referees

    4. Peltjo 6
      Oliver 8
      Letexier 5
      Turpin 6
      Zwayer 6
      Massa 8
      Makkelie 5
      Eskas 6
      Marciniak 5
      Kovacs 6
      Vincic 7

      These are only cl appointments.

    5. @RvT: This says nothing if you don’t know the background.

Appointments are political. It is like an apple pie, distributed pro rata. Top-5 countries get more games than small countries. Thus, Italy has a fixed number of CL spots. Massa benefits from Guida’s injury and Mariani isn’t fully trusted. That is why we get Massa all the time.

Oliver benefits from the fact that Taylor can’t be used with certain teams (f.e. Italian and German teams) and they are with just two Elites.

Marciniak just 5 games, however he missed the first part of the season due to injury.

Turpin and Letexier had less games than Oliver and Massa. No surprise with 3 (!) French Elite referees, all performing well. The same applies to the Germans. They have to “share” the portion of that Apple pie.

I don’t have a clarification for the lack of Dutch referees though.

  3. Chefren, sorry but i totally don't understand your comment about a round of 16 in the best competition between te best european clubs.... is not a TOP match anymore???? I think you already forgot that Feyenoord kicked out AC Milan?? This is not an interesting match for you? I think the Italian side must not underestimate the Rotterdam side, you see what happened with Juventus and AC Milan, lucky or not.... both are out!

    1. Yes, but we are not talking about a very big level, that's what I wanted to say!

    2. Eric, come on… They (Feyenoord) barely have 11 fit players. A loss by Inter would be a disgrace. On paper, this is one of the ‘weaker’ games of the round imo.

Perhaps we should argue about the complete lack of Dutch referees.

    3. Ref..... the returns are not there yet :-)... and don't forget Feyenoord in Europe is overperforming.......big win over Bayern Munchen and Benfica and iff i remember well nice draw with Man City....not the smallest clubs i would say, @chefren... no its not Barca-Real...... but still a round of 16

    1. I can’t follow the English VAR assignments though!

At first Attwell, used to be a trusted VMO, but it seems he was
removed from the scene? Then they’ve tried Salisbury, now Gillett?

      Delete
    2. It's indeed a bit strange about Attwell, because he had a quite good period in which he showed to be reliable, having solved the old and very early troubles. Then now out again from all games, but without very evident mistakes like the ones he committed years ago.
Also, Bankes and Salisbury after the shocker in Ajax - St. Gilloise should be out for a very long time, but more generally a problem with English VARs has always existed, and it's hard to ignore. This depends on the totally different approach of Premier League, if compared, one could even say, to the rest of the world.

    3. I think it would be very harsh to "suspend" Salisbury for the error in Ajax - Union given he was only AVAR, he was likely mostly monitoring the rest while Bankes were checking the penalty incident

  5. By the way, who are the observers for Rome -Bilbao games?

    1. Roma - Athletic Martin Ingvarsson SWE
It means a very experienced Elite referee (expected).

      Delete
    2. Athletic - Roma still unknown and maybe in this case they will even wait for first leg, making appointment in less than a week before.

    3. @Chefren: it is possible that the Com waits for the outcome, scoreline and potential controversies in the 1st leg before making a final decision. Another option is that the referee they’ve considered also works this week.
Example is Turpin, he had two games in the play-off round. The observer in the return of his Cypriot derby was released after Turpin handled his 1st game.

The referees of the return games in Inter-Feyenoord and Lille-Dortmund have not been appointed either.
The same applies to Olympiakos-Bodø and Rangers-Fenerhahce.

It could either be waiting for the 1st leg, it could be a double appointment imo.

  6. Next week:
Vincic and Marciniak in Liverpool-PSG and Atleti-Real respectively. I assume the Polish in Madrid.

In Barcelona-Benfica, the observer is Björn Kuipers. Peljto? Or Schärer?

Letexier will get a game, no doubt about that. No PSG, no Aston Villa/Brugge (next opponent PSG), no Arsenal (French observer). Leverkusen-Bayern?

Kovács will have a game, as usual.
Schärer and Nyberg? Neutral options, however the Swedish was a bit unlucky with two OFRs.

Perhaps a Dutch referee. I would predict Gözübüyük in that case.

    1. With just one Italian referee appointed so far (and 2 Spanish crews), we shouldn’t be surprised to see Massa again next week in his 9th CL game 😉
