Referee teams appointed for UEFA Women’s EURO 2025

The UEFA Referees’ Committee has appointed the referees who will officiate at Women's EURO 2025.

The UEFA Referees Committee has appointed 12 referees, as well as the assistant referees, video match officials and support match officials, who will take charge of the 31 matches at UEFA Women's EURO 2025, which will take place in Switzerland from 2 to 27 July.

The full list of referees who have been selected (in alphabetical order) are:

Catarina Ferreira Campos (Portugal)
Iuliana Demetrescu (Romania)
Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi (Italy)
Silvia Gasperotti (Italy)
Désirée Grundbacher (Switzerland)
Stéphanie Frappart (France)
Marta Huerta de Aza (Spain)
Frida Klarlund (Denmark)
Katalin Kulcsár (Hungary)
Ivana Martinčić (Croatia)
Tess Olofsson (Sweden)
Alina Peşu (Romania)

In addition, as part of the ongoing co-operation between UEFA and the South American Football Confederation CONMEBOL, a referee from Brazil, Edina Alves Batista, together with two assistants, will join the European group of referees for the final tournament.

Refereeing teams at each match will consist of a referee, two assistant referees, and a fourth official. A team of two video match officials will be active at each game and operate throughout the tournament from UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

The preparation of the officials for UEFA Women's EURO 2025 will include a course for all match officials, which will take place at UEFA shortly ahead of the tournament.

UEFA's managing director for refereeing, Roberto Rosetti, said: "As we prepare for UEFA Women's EURO 2025 in Switzerland, we are extremely pleased to see the continuous growth of our top female referees, reflecting the remarkable development of women's football as a whole. As always for a EURO, the best and most consistent referees have been selected. Notably, all of them have passed the same fitness test we conduct for the elite men's referees. We have full confidence in them and their assistants, as well as the video officials, to show their quality at the final tournament."

  1. Most notably, Lehtovaara (FIN) is out. I also expected Projkovska (MKD). No German referees is also very unexpected. Early favorites (deserved or not) for the final are probably Olofsson (SWE) and Ferrieri Caputi (ITA)

    1. Jelena Cvetkovic (Chosen as VAR) might have also been chosen as a referee considering she was a Support Official at the Olympics. She might been injured though as it seems she hasn't refereed a game since December

  2. Most notable omission is Projkovska, I think. Maybe she goes to the Copa America (but Rivera Olmeda might be the more obvious choice).
Remarkable that having two Italians and two Romanians was preferred over more spread among the countries.
Only 5 referees returning from 2022. And then Kulcsar, who was at the EURO 2017 and 2013(!).

On the VAR side, several of the top CL officials were selected, which is remarkable, because it probably means, they will miss the CWC.

  3. Germany not having any on-field officials is interesting...Hussein is still active but not chosen (she did the CL final only 4 years ago). England only having 1 on field official isn't a surprise considering Welch has retired and Aspinall/Massey-Ellis have left the FIFA list.

  4. Agree with Philipp and I see as a big surprise the absence of Macedonian referee, after the path that she followed to Elite.
Rosetti said that all selected officials have passed the tests made also by men, one could guess, given her status and the expected call, that she failed it (but of course this is only a speculation). While, no surprise about Hussein, she hasn't been seen as top Elite in recent years (this is quite surely technical choice). Finnish Lehtovaara is another referee who had excellent seasons in past, but now seems to be a bit out of the favor and we can't remember excellent performances in recent tims. Nevertheless, one can discuss about the calls for two Italian and two Romanian referees, instead of trying to find some names for other countries. It's the same speech we can make for Men.. as long as there is somehing backing you and the committee follows closely, it's easier.
About Spain, Marta Huerta remains nr. 1, while Rivera Olmedo support referee. I don't know how much the offside goal in El Clasico contributed to that, would be unfair for only one mistake, but an extremely crucial and serious one, with the maximum of spotlights on it. We can hope that Huerta is about to have a better tournament than her previous appearances.
About Italy, Gasperotti, who officiates only in serie C but very likely she will be promoted, at moment seems to have more consideration by UEFA for the reasons I mentioned a few days ago here in a comment... last performance of Ferrieri Caputi a very poor one on last Saturday in serie B game Mantova - Sudtirol, two OFR, and absolutely big controversy....

  5. Jesús Valenzuela is attending the FIFA seminar in Zurich with UEFA preselected referees because he couldn't attend the previous one with CONCACAF - COMNEBOL officials, being busy with a game.

  6. OT: Observed Busquets Ferrier at Seville derby, very good performance! Good disciplinary control, high level calls and communication, calm, controll the game well in hot atmosphere. Logical path for him is FIFA IN 2026 replacing Soto Grado. If I am on CTA place, I would give him EL Classico and risk with him, but in this moment I dont think it is possible. Maybe Supercopa or Copa final this year.

    1. I watched the Derbi Sevillano yesterday too. He was mostly fine, with the only minus of missing a clear YC for a(n accidental but nevertheless punishable) step on Vargas' ankle, which resulted in a confrontation between players. Very active to step in and prevent conflicts from escalating in a such a passional clash, but also very lucky there were virtually no penalty area incidents.

At this point it's very clear he'll join the FIFA list in January 2026 and deservedly so, but it should be enough 'ultra-high profile' clashes for him this season. The next Clásico in May could potentially be title-deciding so I definitely expect a FIFA referee there.

Supercopa next year is a good possibility, but it's vox populi the Copa del Rey final will 99% be for Soto Grado as a farewell prize, as it's been a common practice by CTA-RFEF when an important referee retires (Medina Cantalejo 2009, Mejuto 2010, Velasco Carballo was given the 2015 one instead of 2016 cuz he would be ineligible if Madrid or Atlético reached the final, Clos Gómez 2017, Undiano 2019...), and Soto Grado is in very high consideration despite his relatively short spell in LaLiga as a very late bloomer (at 38 he was still refereeing in Spanish 3rd tier!)

    2. It is rumored that Alberola Rojas should referee the next El Clasico!
He is reported to be the best referee in Spain at the moment.

  7. About the list, I expect to see Projkovska and Cvetkovic as main referees. But,there is a lot of time in front of them. I expect Projkovska in WUCL final this year.

    1. The CL final referee should come from the EURO list, I think.
BTW, there is only one referee on that list, who already did a CL final: Katalin Kulcsar (2016).
The latest eight final referees have either retired or are simply not selected!

    2. Surprising that Frappart didn't officiate it yet, but it was hardly possible due to Olympique Lyon. She and Olofsson should be in focus for the womens CL final in my opinion. Frappart deserves it and Olofsson seems to be generally in focus by committee...

CONMEBOL will implement the 8-second rule for goalkeepers starting today when the competitions begin. I'd love to see that.

  9. Interesting penalty area incident in Real Madrid CF vs Real Sociedad de Fútbol (Javier Alberola Rojas, VAR Daniel Jesús Trujillo Suárez)

    1. For me, more penalty than not. But correct by VAR to stay silent.

    2. According to widely accepted method of assessing incidents when the ball is not in playing distance for the fouled player, the offence should be at least reckless to award a penalty. And here the opinions could vary, imo. Indeed, the hit, although quite accidental, is maybe more than careless.

    3. Another talking point about offside interpretation before the corner kick from which Real Madrid CF scored their third goal

    4. Possible missed RC for Olasagasti for the tackle on Vinicius?

There's no studs contact and it's more 'spectacular' than hard, but the impact is quite high and ticks many "tackle as an attack" boxes. Understand the non-intervention but I'd have rather gone with a RC here, tbh.

    5. In the modern era it's hard to expect a RC for 'tackle as an attack' = violent conduct by tackle. Only the hitting point and how many studs made FULL contact with an opponent's leg above the ankle matter nowadays ;)

    6. Agree, Euro Soccer. IMO RC is the best decision, but hard to expect nowadays

  10. Correction,C.Aydin is man in charge for Istanbul Derby.
