DeleteThe result, the buckling of the ankle, is not always determinative of the the seriousness of the foul. Often that is pure luck, due to the angle and timing. A great example of this is the foul on Kone of Canada, where the seriousness of the foul was no where near the seriousness of other fouls by Qatar, but the results were catastrophic.
DeleteI do agree, Balogun definitely "unlucky" in some sense that the effect of his action was of such dangerous nature. I think it boils down to the concept of "being responsible for ones body" when making an attempt to gain possesson and consequentially the result is at times seemed more important than the percepted intention. I feel like this is the way that interpretations of SFP situations have headed last couple of years ever since VAR-introduction.
DeleteWatch in slow motion and Arias on Colombia tackle was straight leg and cleats up. This is taught to be red card as it endangers the safety of the player. The Ghana player did not return to the game. Much more severe than the Bologun play for the USA.

ReplyDeleteYou see the difference from management and aura from Fischer to Turpin. Nothing against canadian referee but here we can see with the outstanding warning to Ayew that the French man is refereeing his 8th match on world cups. And it’s clear to see the gap.

ReplyDeleteEasy first half for Turpin and co with a calm match except the early good YC. Nothing special to say with also a very good physical intervention by AR1 Danos to calm down players in front of the line. Very good communication and management by Turpin on few situations to warning some players dissenting and explain call (for example with James Rodriguez just before the end). Well done.

DeleteGood game by Turpin, intense game at the start especially but not difficult, great control of the players to let them know when they crossed the line especially with use of cards (yes it's possible). Correct foul management and good communication as usual. He will probably get one more game, it all depend on the France team to determine it.

ReplyDeleteClément Turpin delivered a very complete refereeing performance, asserting himself through his charisma and outstanding interpersonal skills to establish a strong authority over the game. A perfect example came with the yellow card shown in the 78th minute in front of the Ghanaian bench, who were protesting too quickly: his gestures and the way he looked at them as if to say, “Alright guys, I’ve dealt with it, I’m on top of it,” perfectly illustrated his managerial mastery of the match.
ReplyDeleteOn top of that, his disciplinary management was solid—even if one could arguably debate the need for one or two additional yellow cards—with the highlight being a caution (finally!) for excessive dissent following a foul decision.
Overall, it was a performance of the highest quality, well supported by two efficient assistant referees. In my opinion, Clément has earned himself one last match at this tournament.
