  1. Difficult game for Stefański. It seems he is ahead of Raczkowski at the moment. However, taking into account his lenient way of refereeing, I have my doubts whether it has been a good choice for that game.

  2. Update: Massa will be observed by Karlsson.

  3. Strange YC from Bebek in 14' for Vitesse #11.It was his 2nd time to push ball away from free kick, first time warning,2nd time booking.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Now there was some pushing and shoving in 37'.
That inccident was solved by Bebek showing 3 booking all at once.

      Delete
    2. And now at the end of 1st half booking for Vitesse #28 for hitting opponet with elbow or hand in the face.Obviously 4th official had a word there because Bebek had a delayed whistle.

      Delete
    3. Average from Bebek,no crucial mistakes, corectly waived 2-3 penalty appeals in 2nd half,7 bookings and no controversial decisions like we used to see from Bebek in the past.

  4. Correct RC in 81' by Bastien.

  5. Correct decision to reject penalty appeal in 90' by Crvena Zvezda.

  6. Bastien basically made a strong performance in a Quite Challenging match. Hot atmosphere on the tribunes, and hot by the end on the pitch. French tolerated no SPA fouls from the start, apart from one missing YC at around 38', but otherwise totally consistent card policy. 2nd YC, maybe a careless elbow? You cannot actually see the contact from the replay angle, one must back Bastien. Good no penalty in additional time.
He was a strong personality throughout, determined and the atmosphere was an irrelevance for him. He was relaxed at times though, laughing with the players, I never saw this before from him, good flexible persona. But in the closing minutes he was distant, which the tense moments was needed.

Convincing performance that could easily have been by an Elite referee; surely it is not too long before Bastien ascends to the top category.

    1. About the second YC (it was a very crucial decision for the outcome of the game) I share your view: referee can be backed, however there is in my opinion a chance that the elbow was only careless.

  7. Correctly disallowed goals in Milan. Tight offside by Milan's Cutrone.

The same decision was taken in Braga to disallow a goal scored by home team. This time the offside is even tighter, great call by the AR2

    1. Yes, both calls absolutely good ;) The one in Braga made by a NO FIFA AR ready to join the list (Tegoni).

  8. 30' Excellent goal decision by AAR1 Ferenc Karakó in Sheriff-Loko - the ball only slightly crossed the line. Probably the crew was helped by GLT but I am not sure: the replay indicated the goal was shown on TV.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. GLT was in use, as it is in all EL group stage games, i guess that committee gave some guidelines to AARs to indicate the goal, as it was before without technology.

  9. Very 'English' style by Stefanski, overall decent performance, two early verbal warnings for tackles close to reckless, and then two YCs for lesser fouls than those verbal warnings but the timing was important. He is a good manager actually, talking a lot but keeping a little distance, naturally for this clash to be honest. Whistling quite a bit but the game needs that, some slightly phantom fouls but overall good- so far full control of this potentially very hot match.

    1. Great performance by Daniel Stefanski, apart from a small riot in 92' which was well managed, to have full control of a Albania-Serbia duel is a great compliment in itself. There were no drones or whatever so naturally the match was quite calm, but this was also Stefanski's merit. Carried on with really good verbal and active (78') prevention, with so many duels to assess his fouls detection was really good. A potential DOGSO, Polish decided YC and I would trust him there in 60'.
I must say what a really pleasant performance, that is what Premier League refereeing should be, Stefanski took a very English style and was really great tonight. If he cannot make Elite I am sure he can be at the top of first. Committee put a lot of trust in him and he more than repaid it, congratulations to the Polish team!

    2. I missed your comment yesterday but I couldn't agree more! He sometimes has games in which he is too lenient, but yesterday he was really good. I am curious if he can make Elite...

  10. Yes Mark, IMO it is red, but also a missing YC for the GK of Lyon. Maybe we get an investigation by the UEFA for misbehaving of the fans. A couple of fans hit the GK.

  11. There were a lot of players so it was difficult to detect everything for Nijhuis. AAR2 van der Graaf didn’t help Nijhuis in this situation

    ReplyDelete
  12. Nijhuis is a referee who has a own style of refereeing. He allows a lot and sometimes to much.

    ReplyDelete
  13. HBS - FCSB: PK missed by Blom at '89

    ReplyDelete
  14. The choice of Nijhuis as referee for this game is discussion worthy. The 2 AARs aren’t experienced , both refereeing at the 2nd level in the Netherlands. Nijhuis is a downgraded referee and with this top-game in the EL. I expected an elite referee.
Maybe it is easy to talk afterwards but this is how I see this case e

    1. Aren't additional assistant referees officials from Eredivisie?

      Delete
    2. Vd Graaf and Mulder both lead 35 games the last years in eredivisie but are more active at the 1st division (2nd level)

      Delete
    3. Most of those games aren’t spectacular and without a pressure of ranking/ derbies

      Delete
    4. Mulder is a Dutch elite referee. He has been promoted at the start of this season. Van de Graaf had his debut as 6th official, that's true.
But, I think that Nijhuis as an experienced first group referee seemes a good choice on beforehand.

Can't judge how he performed this evening.

  15. I have to praise Stefański this time. Very good tactical approach. Warnings at the best moments, cards when needed in a game with 45 fouls. Players were happy with his performance, most of them thanked him after the final whistle.

This penalty incident is the only controversy:

  16. In Austria Wien-Rijeka AR1 signaled offside, but referee Scharer denied that. Anyone with video of that situation?

    1. If you have the minute of the incident, I can try to look for it.

Here the video, very good alertness by Schärer who noticed that the player didn't touch the ball so the offside was not active. However, the problem is that on the original pass the other player (who then reached the ball) was in offside as well. Here AR should have communicated to refereee that even in case of not punishable offside for the first player, then for the second it would have been offside as well. Difficult situation to explain and understand in a few seconds on the pitch. Basically, Schärer did something good but only AR could know about the other player who then got the ball.

      Delete
    3. Why isn't this offside active? He goes towards the ball and lets it pass between the legs, clearly influencing the defence. Maybe I'm missing something...

      Delete
    4. The attacker who avoids the contact with the ball is not going towards it, Schärer considered this gesture as a clear signal that player was not interested in the ball, so decided to play on following AR's call. However, I get your point of view, the opponent close to the player in offside can be indirectly influenced, for example thinking that the opponent could control the ball. To add, in recent times, offside's rule has changed really often and there are many interpretations. They can be different in each federation, what I can say is that there is a tendency, when a player deliberately shows that he doesn't want to play the ball, to go on. The "psychological" influence is a difficult topic.

  17. Östersuns vs bilbao.

Around minute 8 super clear SFP to Östersund in my opinion but only a yellow given. And minute 27 I think it was a clear penalty that wasn't whistled to Östersund.

    1. Despite of the short distance between the two players, this should be a penalty because the arm is too raised in a not natural position and a shot (head) on goal is blocked. Penalty + YC. I think AAR1 was too far from the situation and Blom missed it as well.

      Delete
    2. What about foul by attacker? Look at his hands...

  20. Agree guys. But sorry big crucial mistake to just give YC to #eve5 player. Obviously was RC. And also YC to Lyon’s goalkeeper. Lenient and clearly not convincing performance here n’y Nijhuis.

  21. Why stays an AAR on the same side as the AR and not on the other side of the goal. What is the explaining of the UEFA?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When the experiment about additional assistant referees started (2009-10 in Europa League), they were indeed on the other side of penalty area (the side without assistant referee), then there was this change, basically because it is expected that main referees, by their diagonal movement on the pitch, should cover the other side, while the one close to AR is demanded to AARs.
      Something like that:

    1. According to what I read and how I understood it: Manuel Gräfe stated in a big interview at the beginning of the season that Herbert Fandel and Hellmut Krug bullied several referees and that appointments under Fandel (who was in charge of appointments until 2016) were not made under the performance principle, but more in terms of sympathy. He furthermore questioned how Felix Zwayer (he mentioned his name) could have made it to the top, because he was somehow involved in the 2005 scandal around 2nd division referee Hoyzer. Furthermore, Fandel and Krug are reproached to "adapt" referee marks, also in terms of sympathy and loyalty (also confirmed by certain observers). According to several media, Gräfe is supported by Felix Brych and a few days back, there was a meeting by representants of DFB, Fandel, Krug, Brych and Gräfe.

This is basically what I heard from and if I missed something or got anything wrong, I'd be grateful for some more clarification.

    2. That is a pretty good summary, I think. :)

    3. Does that imply Brych has also been victimised at some stage by the 2 gentlemen in question??

Brych is acting as spokesman for the Bundesliga referees here.

    1. Thanks for having reported this news, I didn't know.
Looking for something, I have found this video:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLADrB1D8MM
Waiting for a translation by our Dutch readers, let me say that first of all, it is very "particular" that Nijhuis is allowed to talk in TV about a UEFA game he handled. Here in Italy (as well as in many other countries, I guess) it would be strictly forbidden.

      Delete
    2. Going by expressions it indeed seems Nijhuis is ridiculing him... Doesn't look good at all that a referee can speak like that regarding an European assignment... I guess Collina won't be pleased to see all these...

      Delete
    3. I remember seeing the referee of the Dutch Super Cup being interviewed after the game about the use of VAR, so maybe it's a normal thing for referees in The Netherlands?

      Delete
    4. That they do after the game with permission from KNVB... But I'm not sure KNVB has any power to grant permission regarding talking about a UEFA match... I've never seen Kuipers or Makkelie or Blom talking about a match on TV just after returning from European duties... I'm not sure what exactly the regulation is on this matter!!

      Delete
    5. You are right. It isn’t acceptable what Nijhuis doing here.

In the Netherlands we are always talking about referees. We are a small country. We are proud that Kuipers is a big referee. Today is the match Feyenoord-Ajax with Danny Makkelie. Five days ago the papers are writing about the appointment of Makkelie. Many people have the opinion that Makkelie is an Ajax-referee. On the other side Makkelie is living in Dordrecht, a city 15 kilometers from Rotterdam and he works as a police officer in the area of Dordrecht and Rotterdam. There is always discuss when Makkelie is appointed to an Ajax game of Feyenoord game

  26. According to french newspaper L’equipe.fr, you can translate that by an answer which Nijhuis told : « Ronald, i can add 15 minutes and your team won’t Score more »...No a good communication on the pitch (i saw the match and Nijhuis wasn’t very convincing) and futthermore after on a tv show...

  27. Bas Nijhuis joins sometimes a football talk show. It isn’t a normal a talk show but a show with a lot of humor and jokes about a lot of nonsense. Last season Nijhuis got a lot of criticism about his style of refereeing. The hosts of the show like the style of Nijhuis so they invited Nijhuis sometimes. In the Netherlands, it is normal that referees are coming on TV, also after matches. Kuipers joins sometimes a talk show, but he joins a normal show. When a referee makes a crucial mistake, he explained it after the match in the mixed zone. That is really normal in the Netherlands, but Nijhuis does it extravagant. The KNVB gave Nijhuis permission to join that show, IMO a mistake.

    1. From the expressions I can agree with you that it's some kind of a nonsense show really... I never like Nijhuis for his style of refereeing neither for his attitude that he displays... What he has done here goes on to consolidate the opinion I already had about him... Really sorry but the way he's talking about things here is bordering on unacceptable!!
