  1. Can somebody please translate what’s happening between Makkelie and his colleague van Boekel. Both FIFA referee. I read a article about Makkelie, he send a sms to a commentator in the studio at FOX. On twitter they are writing very bad about Makkelie. Something about a decision from match of van Boekel and Makkelie try to “kill the referee”. If my google translate are correct

  2. Really wierd for referee to award handball and not waiting if there can be anything..

  3. I don’t understand why Makkelie try to kill his colleague Boekel. I read a very negative article about Makkelie after a match Vaslui-Inter Milan 23-08-2012, he used a fire hose in a hotel room. Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf write this news. After this serious occurrence the Dutch FA gave him a couple weeks no matches. His assistant Nick Siebert removed from FIFA list. Makkelie was lucky.

The same newspaper write about a training camp january 2014 @Turkey. The same referee Danny Makkelie did a cabaret act about former FIFA President Blatter. These act was not funny, because he wished him a coffin. FIFA was not happy. You can find the articles at google.

Collina and Busacca will not be happy.

    1. I don't think we should see too much in this.

Makkelie did something that happens much more often. In this case, it worked out badly.

The controversy around Makkelie is something that I don't see. An incident in 2014 is nit 'much controversy.'

The same Collina brought Makkelie to the elite group and gave him great appointments. I don't see much problems.

    2. I don’t believe that this is normal that you send a sms to a commentator at Fox about a colleague who make a mistake and write please don’t say my name. So this is normal? Jovan uploaded the video with Makkelie.

And for you it is normal that you can make a act about a former FIFA President to wish him a coffin?

For me I don’t care who are the referee, Makkelie or somebody else, but I think this is not a good message, a elite ref don’t need this, and this is a bad advertising for UEFA-FIFA

    3. It really was no big deal. In the tv studio there was confusion about the LOTG regarding a decision Van Boekel took in a first division match. He didn't play advantage after a deliberate handball. The ball went in the goal but Van Boekel already whistled a free kick. Commentators thought there was a rule that advatage cannot be played after a hand ball. There was a lot of discussion in the studio and Makkelie send a text to the commentator to explain that there is no such rule, in my opinion just to clarify things. No big deal..just an unlucky decision in a well refereed match.

    4. I think Rik B en Pieter Post describe the situation accurately. I can add that here in Holland the Dutch FA puts much effort in educating the broadcasters, commentators and analists. At the start of every season all commentators and analists are invited to join a session - lead by the referee committee of the Dutch FA - on the LotG and the technical instructions. In line with this approach referees are encouraged to clearify and/or correct any statements concerning refereeing issues made on tv by commentators/analists.
In this case - as Pieter stated - the analists asked themselves if - in the LotG - an exception exists concerning applying advantage after a handball. Makkelie only messaged the analist that “such an exception doesn’t exist”, and that’s of course a correct information. I don’t think this can be considered “killing a colleague referee”.
Head of Refereeing Dick van Egmond meanwhile stated he regrets the fuss about this particular situation but will continue to encourage referees to educate/inform the media in these ways. Furthermore he stated that no hard feelings exist between Van Boekel en Makkelie.
Then to conclude - Schiedsrichter1973 refers to some alleged incidents (long time ago) - one should understand that De Telegraaf isn’t exactly a quality newspaper and is infamous of their tendentious way of news coverage and a strong preference towards a specific club in Amsterdam. Especially the journalist reporting on refereeing matters fights personal fights with some of our Dutch referees (and the Head of Refereeing). So when looking for reliable and objective (refereeing) news in Holland one could better choose other sources in my honest opinion.

  6. I didn't watch the game of Diedhiou, but taking a look at the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8C3mP5Z4-k
I can notice that he had again some positioning problems, for example minute 00:10. If you stay so far away from penalty area in occasion of a free kick that can be a long ball, you will miss every incident in the box.
01:32 is a good NO FLAG by AR1, leading to a goal. Not difficult because there was a defender keeping clearly onside, but surely the presence of another attacker in offside could have deceived.
01:42 penalty, supported by VAR, however for me definitely soft.

  7. OT: Man city vs Tottenham. Honestly. I dont’t understand how Cane didn’t get straight red cards for those 2 very dangerous studs tackles in this match. And a Manchester city player kicked him in the face and only got a yellow.

    My opinion.

  8. 4 obvious and clear cases of serious foul play in City vs Tottenham. No red cards given.

00:10 not even YC there? it is close to RC, VAR should have intervened.
00:55 penalty appeal, no VAR intervention, I think supportable decision by Ramos.
01:13 offside and disallowed goal, in case I think extremely tight, VAR confirmed the choice by AR, Cristiano Ronaldo made VAR Gesture, he should have been booked for that.

    2. Straight Red. No doubt at all. That type of foul indeed endangers the safety of the player. Unacceptable for Ramos to miss this. Let's not fool ourselves. VAR was never going to intervene. Because no matter how dangerous and horrendous that tackle was. It doesn't fulfill the criteria for a Red Card by today's "modern" standards.
Ramos' performance is just another example of why Garcia Orozco is more highly regarded by players and managers in the Mexican League. But Busacca and his cronies in their wisdom(or lack there of) don't see it this way.

  11. Who saw Manchester City vs Tottenham? 4 clear serious foul play red cards should have been issued but none were given. Three very dangerous studs tackles and one kick in the face.

    1. 3-Over the ball stamps to either the ankles or shins. In which players were beyond lucky to not have been seriously injured.

1-Forceful, non footballing, and unnecessary kick to the face of an opposing player. The type of kick that any MMA fighter would be proud of.

      But yay "modern style"!

  12. Yet another situation against Barcelona in which the ball fully crossed the goal line and the goal was not given. Very difficult to assess tonight, but the lack of GLT and more importantly the lack of interest in providing it is unbelievable.

    1. To be honest, Pau Cebrián Devís is not to blame for that situation. Everybody has to accept that such mistakes will happen if there is no GLT or VAR.

More interesting incidents from the the referee's point of view are:

Suárez' illegal use of arm. Tool or weapon? Fighting for the ball or off the ball incident?

    2. I disagree Ray. The last defender was not that far from the goal line. It wasn't a situation like Barcelona's last disallowed goal. Where it was a long distance shot. Similar to the situation that Larionda's crew had in Germany vs England. But AR's have a tendency to freeze with the last defender and not follow the ball.

    3. Of course, Pau Cebrián cannot be blamed for that. Too fast and too close to the goal line to be 100% sure about the goal. Don't give if you are not sure.

However, who can and should be blamed is Javier Tebas (LaLiga president) and RFEF. Mostly Tebas. Next season we will have VAR, but without GLT. Situations like these will take forever to be resolved, if they can be. IMO, GLT is a must.

For me, Suárez uses his arm as a tool. Not a VC, but close, specially given his history. Many people have already started asking for a RC here. I think a YC would have been enough. Likely Mateu missed the second contact, as he was too far away.

Also, missed penalty. I guess he believed they hit each other, or didn't see who played the ball first.

On the other hand, correct penalty awarded for FC Barcelona.

All in all, a boring match to watch. Deportivo's level is far below Barcelona's.

  13. African Nations Championship 2018 (CHAN). VAR and GLT will debut at this championship in CAF, a minor AFCON if you will (only local players are invited). All six referees in the contention for a ticket to WC are there, all as VAR but for Tessema who functions on the pitch.

    3. I was unaware that one needs to be a FIFA listed to properly interpret The Laws of the Game and know that those were cases of Serious Foul Play and that Red Card's were deserved.

Strongly worded messages don't offend me. I'm offended by how The Laws of the Game are being enforced in lightest most permissive manner possible. That there is truly offensive.

    GLT failure in France.
Goal was awarded after the GLT signalled it, then referee Letexier checked the pictures and disallowed it, although VAR is not used yet in Ligue 1.

    1. Interesting, watching the video one could guess that the reason of GLT failure was the fact that the force of the ball caused a significant movement of the whole net and there was a malfunction of the technology.

    2. This incident seems like a big deal.

On what grounds did the referee overrule GLT? How did he "check pictures?" Why would he even begin to question GLT?

There are a whole host of issues here. Even if the right decision was eventually arrived at, the fact that GLT apparently failed and the referee team can overrule it sets a very dangerous precedent. I would like to learn a lot more about what occurred.

  16. And what do we have in Spain? No GLT and this week THIRD goal from Barca in 2017 wasn't confirmed. First one against Betis (very important goal - Barca didn't win and later lost the title), second against Valencia (contender for the title, and Barca draw that match) and last night against Deportivo.
In England we always have everything... For example, in Watford-Huddersfield first goal was score after double blatant offsides. Firstly, the assistant was offside, secondly the scorer. Very clear situation.
And Everton seems to be one lucky team. After very, very soft penalty against Liverpool and totally undeserved draw, they got again soft penalty tonight and scored after PK was missed, but the scorer (and at least 5 other players) entered PK area earlier. They got another penalty later, but foul occurred one meter from PK area (referee Jonathan Moss). I can imagine what happened in rest of the matches I didn't watch. Refereeing in Premier league is much under the quality of the competition

    1. The first penalty was soft? How do you not call it? It's not a dive. It's clear contact. What do you want called here if it's not a penalty?

Also, you seriously want encroachment called on the rebound? First off, MAYBE one Everton player entered the penalty area early and, if so, it's by about a yard. Meanwhile about 5 Swansea players entered early. So you're arguing, what, that the penalty should be retaken instead of allowing the rebounded goal to stand? That seems like a very narrow criticism. I can't think of a single top-flight referee in the world that would have forced a retake on this penalty.

  17. About this one in France - I am sure in one thing: the picture is wrong. Freeze the video and you will see that at least one part of the ball is inside the goal, behind the line. Maybe it isn't goal, I am not positive about that, but the picture is not correct 100%.
