  2. Thank you for this post. It is very interesting.
Congratulation to Oliver and Taylor. They deserve it.
I really cannot understand why Atkinson is still in Elite team; he didn't officiate any CL and (maybe) EL match since a long time and seems forgotten by committee.
In my opinion Fernandez Borbalan should have been removed from Elite; he is close to retirement and never reached out standing levels.
But what is amazing me is the composition of the first group: it's really too big, too much populated. it doesn't make sense allocate in the same group referees like Soares Dias, Buquet and Bastien and some others like Gestranius, PIsani, Liany (just as example). The old Elite Development category was more appropriated to performances and perspective. I think that current Category 1 doesn't make sense; Welz is still there without officiating international match and without good results.
In my opinion, with maximum respect for all, only the following guys could be Class 1:
Banti, Bastien, Bebek, Bezborodov, Blom, Buquet, del Cerro Grande, Delférière, Ekberg*, Estrada Fernández, Gil Manzano, Göçek, Gözübüyük, Gräfe, Jug, Kehlet, Kružliak, Madden, Mažeika, Moen, Nijhuis, Raczkowski, Schörgenhofer, Soares Dias, Sousa, Stefański, Stieler, Treimanis, Vad, Vinčič, Zelinka
On othe rhand I was expectinga promotion to upper class for Siebert, Jovanovic and Massa

    1. If we consider Elite & 1st as dedicated to CL and EL matches than we need to have 80 referees there (with limit 3 matches per referee in the group phase) and with current groups we have 76.
I'm surprised than Pawson was not promoted to 1st, I think that we should expect that very soon. Also 7 French + 6 Italian in 2nd mens that we should expect some promotions very soon.

    1. Good choice.
Burgos,Hernandez,Borbalan had too much controversy in Real -Barca matches,Mateu already had big match between Barca and Atletico this year so Sanchez is logical choice.
Surprised that Jesus Gil after 2014 El Clasico hasnt handled another one.

    1. Do you know more about the reasons of his retirement from the list? It was strange at that time.

    2. As i know he had some conflict with former referee chief Miroslav Radoman. He didnt like Mazic and wanted to remove Mazic AARS - Grujic and Djokic from FIFA list..

    3. What about Aleksandar Vasić?

    4. He replaced Danilo Grujic after they removed him. Also he was 41y old so he is out and Grujic is back.

It would be nice to know your opinion about this situation occurred in Coppa Italia's game Fiorentina - Sampdoria. Referee whistled for offside, was that correct? Was the offside already punishable when the attacker, very likely, was fouled in penalty area?

    1. IMO penalty but we know that IFAB / FIFA / UEFA prefer offside.

    2. We can see that AR was waiting for ref to make a call, i guess they was talking about penatly but decided tonguve offside.

  7. Was Grinfeld and Kehlet already promoted to First Group earlier??

    1. Grinfeeld had been promoted on previous update, June 2017.
Kehlet, I think, even earlier, as he was already Category 1.

  11. Sascha Stegemann will handle the "German Clasico" between Bayern München and Borussia Dortmund in the cup R16 on Wednesday.
It's the first time he handles this match and the biggest game of his career so far next to the relegation play-off this year.
He was chosen over Dankert and Dingert; all other FIFA referees were ineligible or unlikely to be selected due to different reasons (geography, previous appointments, injuries).
Stegemann should be in the pole position for the next German FIFA spot.

    1. To specify: Gräfe and Siebert could have been available, when they had not been appointed to Bayern/Dortmund games in the last weeks. So if DFB had planned them early for the cup match, it would have been possible.

    2. He is 33 yo so it's clear he will be the next FIFA ref from Germany. Who is the best from those names, as I expect even three more names joining the FIFA list apart from Stegemann: Brand, Jablonski, Kampka, Osmers, Petersen, Storks? As I already said, keeping Dingert, Fritz and Welz (maybe also Gräfe) for another year on the FIFA list was not smart.

    3. If there were two spots at the moment, I am quite sure, that Brand would get the second one. But Kampka is having quite a good season and is the oldest of the candidates, so maybe he will chosen first.
Judging by recent performances, Osmers should be slightly behind Kampka.
For the three newcomers the sample size is still quite small, but Petersen had a weaker start than Jablonski and Storks and he is older, so I would say he seems least likely to become FIFA referee.

  12. Can somebody please translate what’s happening between Makkelie and his colleague van Boekel. Both FIFA referee. I read a article about Makkelie, he send a sms to a commentator in the studio at FOX. On twitter they are writing very bad about Makkelie. Something about a decision from match of van Boekel and Makkelie try to “kill the referee”. If my google translate are correct

    ReplyDelete
  13. I don’t understand why Makkelie try to kill his colleague Boekel. I read a very negative article about Makkelie after a match Vaslui-Inter Milan 23-08-2012, he used a fire hose in a hotel room. Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf write this news. After this serious occurrence the Dutch FA gave him a couple weeks no matches. His assistant Nick Siebert removed from FIFA list. Makkelie was lucky.

The same newspaper write about a training camp january 2014 @Turkey. The same referee Danny Makkelie did a cabaret act about former FIFA President Blatter. These act was not funny, because he wished him a coffin. FIFA was not happy. You can find the articles at google.

Collina and Busacca will not be happy.
