ReplyDeleteDisciplinary management:
16' Verbal warning after late tackle; SPA?

19' Two consecutive fouls; careless-reckless?
https://streamable.com/nxb55
41' Sliding into goalkeeper; careless-reckless?
https://streamable.com/kkerj
56' YC Correia (POR) - SPA

Offside incidents:
90' Goal FIN disallowed
https://streamable.com/b62i5
90+4' Goal POR after two tight onside situations
https://streamable.com/ptdi1
16': For me a verbal warning here is not enough here, this really should have been a YC because the tackle was actually quite reckless and indeed one can discuss a potential SPA, given as well the direction of the ball.
Delete19': Interesting situation. IMO Schärer sanctioned the second foul because it had more "impact" (because the player is falling, contrarily to the first situation). Careless foul for me.
41': totally unintentional incident, but as given the way the player is sliding into the keeper (studs-up at first, but he tries to hold his leg back), I would assess this foul as reckless, therefore YC.
56': Nothing to add. Mandatory YC, correct decision by Schärer.
90': Indeed 4 Finnish players stand offside, one of them gets the ball, correct call by the AR.
90+4': very good eye by AR2, with two crucial decisions in one situation, both assessed correctly. Well done!
Thank you Dutch ;)
DeleteIn my opinion the challenge in 16' is a mandatory YC, not so much because of SPA, but for the nature of the foul (reckless). You can't manage it with a warning.
41' is a clear YC as well, no intention by player, but in such situations the effects must be punished. In case of intentional action, this would have been RC.
90' and 90'+4 both good decisions by assistant referees. In the first case, is not relevant whether the attacker who tries to kick the ball, succeeds in it or not, because the teammates were already in offside at the moment of the original pass. 90'+4 a very good work by the other AR as well.
Frankowski has been appointed to a UCL game on the 1st of August, but he is active at the U19 tournament
ReplyDeleteEven all 6 U19 referees + Nevalainen have matches then - very strange.
DeleteThe U19 tournament will end three days before, so the usual amount of rest days between two appointments will be ensured.
DeleteWhere can I find the appointments for the second legs in the second qualifying round of the current UCL/EL competition?
CL
Deletehttp://kronikasedziowska.blogspot.com/2018/07/uefa-champions-league-second-qualifying_22.html
EL second legs still to be published
Thanks, Chefren! 😉
DeleteThe appointments of the six U-19 main referees for the UCL qualifying stage three days later seem to follow certain geographical aspects:
DeleteLardot (Finland - Finland), Dallas (Finland - Sweden), Martínez Munuera (Finland - Denmark) and Schärer (Finland - Norway) have short distances from the current tournament to the UCL host countries and Frankowski (Lithuania - Poland) and Schüttengruber (Hungary - Austria) short distances from the UCL host countries home.
I assume that all of them could fly directly from the U-19 tournament to their UCL qualifying matches.
The same happened last year. Most of the U19 referees
Delete(held in Georgia) had UCL qualifying match.
I remember Jovanović had a final (Portugal-England) and he stayed in Georgia for UCL qualifying match
Benfica - Fenerbahçe in CL third qualifying round.
ReplyDeleteThis game could be even for an Elite referee.
Since there are only 12 matches in CL play-off I would not be surprised. But I think one of the TOP cat1 referees: Kulbakov, Vinčić, Stieler, Buquet, maybe Moen, Nihjuis or Blom since they are ex-elite referees.
DeleteMaybe Sidiropulos in one of the matches
DeleteMazic and Lannoy would be good choices in my opinion ;-).
DeleteA Greek referee in a match with a Turkish team should be avoided IMO.
DeleteI would like to see Oliver/Karasev/Makkelie
DeleteOT. Will you start posting appointments here, on this blog from next round?
ReplyDeleteI mean for CL and EL qualifiers
DeleteYes :)
DeleteUnderneath a somewhat more extensive compilation of the most interesting refereeing situations from Italy-Norway. A totally different match than Portugal-Finland (21 fouls and 1 YC in the latter while 51 fouls and 8 YC's in the Italy-Norway game.

61’ incorrect link. It doesn’t show a penalty
Delete61' Penalty NOR and YC Gabbia (ITA) - holding
Deletehttps://streamable.com/n06cq
So it wasn’t a penalty to my taste and should have been an indirect free kick for a double touch and no goal. Not the best situation for young Dallas.
DeleteEverything else is acceptable but I would prefer a caution in 42’.
Hello!

OT: as you may recall from a comment by Chefren at the end of June, Claudio Gavillucci has been dismissed from his role as Serie A referee. He was dismissed not for age limit but for “technical reason”. Many in Italy didn’t agree with this decision as he was definitely not the worst referee. Well, now Gavillucci appealed against the Italian referee association (AIA). It might be the first time that a referee would be reintegrated into the association after being dismissed
ReplyDeletehttps://sport.ilmattino.it/calcio/sospeso_gavilucci_fa_ricorso_arbitro_che_sospese_samp_napoli_per_cori_razzisti-3874509.html
DeleteHere the article, you can translate it.
Main problem with Italian referees association is that the technical choices are made not only based on the marks and the ranking, but there are also other assessments like age, perspectives, and even geographical origin. About the latter, for example, if you have a certain number of referees from a region, all officiating in serie A, in case of technical choice to be made, one of these referees could be dismissed also for that reason.
Having said that, in my opinion Gavillucci was not the worst referee of last season, as you stated, but very likely this decision was taken also because he was in danger in previous years and he never convinced the committee. In a few days, Gavillucci will be 39 years old. This has been for sure another argument against him, because in my opinion in serie A there is a worse referee than him, but younger.
To add, Gavillucci ended his season with two games in a row: Sampdoria - Napoli and then Udinese - Bologna on last matchday. For sure, this was not something in favor of the final choice made by Rizzoli... what referees want is more transparency, they could even accept the rankings, but choices are made with very subjective criteria.
Finally, I must add that before Gavillucci, a few months ago another referee, but from a lower category made the same appeal against AIA, but then he decided to stop his action before the end of the process. So, there wasn't any final decision there. Let's see this time.
Serie A referees will meet on next Saturday to start the first workshop for new season, further news are expected soon.
Do you know if Rocchi, Orsato, Irrati and Valeri will join preparatory workshop as well ? Are they justified to be ended world cup few days ago ?

Opinions please
ReplyDeletehttp://www.espn.com/soccer/major-league-soccer/story/3573207/referees-group-admits-error-in-awarding-columbus-crew-penalty
Opinions on the call itself.
Opinion on VAR failing to intervene.
Opinion on the comments made by the referee post-match to justify call.
Opinions of comments by players, CEO, and the panel discussing the situation.
And finally, opinion on comments made by the Referee Organization (PRO).
Keep in mind that VAR in the USA is Howard Webb's "baby".
Thank you all ahead of time for sharing your opinions.
A truly awful call and exactly why VAR was introduced. Petrescu is only looking at that one scene and how he can determine it a foul is not good enough. Again we see the mobbing and attempts to force a review and delay the kick, something that has to be better handled by all leagues and confederations. I like the reaction to the player asking for VAR, a positive. It’s not really acceptable for the call to be made live but then for the VAR not to intervene is remarkable.
ReplyDeleteIt’s always difficult after a match to admit an error but all credibility is lost when you attempt to defend such a call, exactly why I’m against post match interviews.
I like that PRO are clear about the error but when you see continued poor performances it’s impossible to say referee’s are accountable. You can train and practice as much as you like but when your officials are not at the required standard or adaptable to the change VAR brings then they need to be removed.
Can you post link of the incident
