2018 FIFA World Cup - Referee predictions - Quarterfinals

You can already send now the predictions for quarterfinals.
You have to guess the exact referee for each game by filling in the form. Just insert your name, or, if you want, a nickname (it must be always the same for all your future predictions) and then for each game just write down the referee and his nationality in brackets. Please write the name of a referee in a clear way, we will try always to support your choice, but don't make it impossible for us.
Example:  Felix Brych (GER), Joel Aguilar (SLV), and so on.

Points will be assigned according to the following pattern (new rules after group stage):

10 points for having guessed the exact referee of a match
5 point if a referee from the same confederation of the one guessed will be in charge of the specific game
2 points if a guessed referee for a game will get a game in the same round (for example, the whole round of 16)

In order to give you more time, given the short period for predictions, as soon as the first appointment for the related games will be released, the form will be annulled and your predictions wont be accepted.
The day of release for the first appointment of  this set is 4 July.

A special thank to Soham and Eric.

Kuipers, Mažić, Ricci and Pitana to officiate quarterfinals

    1. I had similar thinking as you, but I put Ricci on Sweden - England because he's already done Croatia. I'd have no problem if he repeats with them, but since we haven't seen it happen yet in this tournament I feel like Sweden - England is a safer pick for these predictions (with Mazic on Uruguay - France and somebody else, definitely not Irmatov, on Russia - Croatia. I said Cunha.)

    2. Exactly my prediction... though I have a bad feeling because of Irmatov... but hopefully he'll finally find his old form and we will have three threads with only positive comments 😂 who knows?

  7. URUvFRA: Mazic
    BRAvBEL: Cakir
    RUSvCRO: Cunha
    SWEvENG: Ricci

Semifinals and Finals will be Cakir, Kuipers, and Faghani IMO. But Cakir still have a QF to referee; if he doesn't do well enough then it will be Pitana instead of him (which is why I'm not putting Pitana on any QF games).

3rd place game will either be a "Thank you" to Brych, Irmatov, Aguilar, or Gassama for their great work over many years but with unfortunate events / poor performances derailing their world cup campaigns. Or it will be a reward for Diedhiou. I know I'm casting a wide net with this one :)

    1. I second Soccer Guy. But I think Pitana will be involved. Maybe at QF when he is still an option because he might not be available anymore should Brazil or Uruguay qualify for a semi.

  8. All of you people predicting Irmatov... I hope not. He's had a very poor World Cup. Just not on his game this time around.

Brazil vs Belgium - Milorad Mažić (SRB)
Sweden vs England - Sandro Ricci (BRA)
Russia vs Croatia - Andrés Cunha (URG)

    1. So similar to mine! I just have Mazi and Cakir flip-flopped.

    2. I personally prefer Cakir over Mažić! More experience and authority.

  10. OT: I don't know if it was mentioned somewhere earlier but I just saw it on uefa's page. Ex FIFA referees committee member Katriina Elovirta from Finland died at the age of 57 after a long illness. International referee from 1995-2003, FIFA referee instructor from 2005-2018, FIFA Referees committee 2012-2016. With Ingrid Jonsson and Jacqueline Leleu first woman ever in FIFA referees committee.

    1. FRA-URU requires a top ref. Sorry, but Gassama is not.

      Delete
    2. I think Gassama is a very good ref, but I don't see him getting another game because I think FIFA wanted to keep him with a low profile after his AR getting banned. He only had one match in the group stage for a reason.

      Delete
    3. I would give him 3rd place match. He would enjoy more than someone like Irmatov or Dr. Brych.

      Delete
    4. Gassama? Did you see him at the Confeds and the clear penalty he could not spot. Poor

      Delete
  13. Pitana is at a now-or-never moment.
He won't bem available for semis or final which involve Brazil or Uruguay.
FIFA may want to assign him QF while he can still make it.

    1. I predicted Cunha on Russia - Croatia, but if FIFA share your opinions that an Argentine should not ref Brazil or Uruguay, then I could easily see him and Ricci getting the two England - Sweden and Russia - Croatia games.

As of now, my predictions are Kuipers and Faghani on the semifinals with Cakir on the final, but that's very contingent on how Cakir does in his QF (which I'm assuming he's going to get, Brazil - Belgium specifically). If he does poorly then I could see Pitana taking a semifinal and Kuipers/Faghani taking the final. Both the South American teams remaining are on one side of the bracket so if there really is an issue, Pitana could always take the all-UEFA clash in the semis.

      Delete
    2. There is an issue in South América. It's either Pitana or Brazil/Uruguay.

      Delete
    3. It could still be Brazil vs Uruguay with Pitana refereeing.

And who cares what south america thinks? Ultimately, it should be FIFA's decision, and Collina has not sounded very fond of the "confederations rule." Though it seems like maybe other forces exist..

    4. Brazil vetoed Pitana in 2014 for Brazil v Colombia!

      Delete
    5. Thanks for the reminder, Sohan.

      Delete
    6. Soccer Guy: Brazil-Uruguay will desperately need Pitana. I am with you there. But your diatribe about who cares what S. America thinks is rather uncalled for.

      Delete
    7. I don't mean it in an offensive way, sorry if that's how it was interpreted. What I meant was this: Soham said that Brazil "vetoed" Pitana in 2014. Surely the teams don't have the power to pick their referees, do they?

      Delete
    8. Some teams have more influence than others. Coelho in 82 and Arpi in 86 did finals (and Wright in 90) at the height of Brazilian Joao Havelange power at FIFA. Teams can't pick, but their veto sometimes work.

      Delete
    9. José Wright in 90 did semi, Sorry.

      Delete
    10. Havelange specifically dictated that Jose Torres Cadena (Colombia) whistled the 1994 Semifinal Brazil - Sweden, FIFA RefCom were planning a UEFA referee.

      And countless more examples.

    11. England don't have good experiences with Uruguayan officials, remember Lampard's goal that wasn't, against Germany in 2010

  16. Brych's situation is very interesting. Two World Cups, only three matches and never a knock-out faze match. For referee like Brych some kind of dissapointment (althoug attending a World Cup is great enough). It remindes me on Oscar Ruiz - three World Cup's and only 5 matches in total (just to compare, Kassai who attended only one world cup has 5 matches).

    1. Oscar Ruiz would have had a field day at this WC. What a great referee. Great authority and respect from players.

      Delete
    2. As for Dr. Brych, a seemingly pompous fellow, lack of humility took its toll.

      Delete
    3. Kassai has 4 WC matches in his bag, not 5!

    6. Wow, I didn't realize that he handles 5 games in a single tournament in 2006. And 8 total assignments in his career is quite admirable.

  17. Collina is thinking cakir for final, and he will look him qf performance uru- fra or bre-bel,,if cakir manage very good we can be sure for final name will be cakir,,,but if he don't think cakir for final we can see cakir on the sf,,pitana I don't think so because of Brasil and Uruguay,,and kuipers handled already el final and faghani will go to 3. Match,,so final name depends on the cakirs performance in qf.

  18. Mazic in final...same as in UEFA Champions league final

  19. I predict Faghani will have a SF. Kuipers or Pitana the other SF. Çakir the final If he does really well in his QF. If not, Kuipers.

  27. I think Cakir, Mazic and Ricci are safe bets for the QF as well as Kuipers, Pitana and Faghani for the SF and the final.

But it's quite difficult to guess the fourth QF (Cunha seems to be the most probably name) and the third place playoff (Shukralla? Gassama? Diedhiou? Cacares? Mateu Lahoz?).
