  1. Overall no big surprises in R16. All 8 referees had 2 GS matches unlike 2014, where some had R16 as second match.

Other referees with 2 GS matches are:
Ricci, Cakir, Cunha, Shukralla, Mateu, Caceres, Irmatov, Sikazwe, Mazic, Roldan.

Most will agree, that Ricci and Cakir should be sure for QF and Mazic is quite likely as well. For the 4th QF it is more open. Irmatov would be a candidate due to his experience, but looking at performance at this tournament Cunha and Shukralla deserve it more. Mateu and Sikazwe might have small chances, while Roldan and Caceres should be out.

    1. One more thing: So far, no referee has had a team a second time (unlike Ricci in 2014's R16). Let's see, whether they will maintain that in QF as well.

    2. Maybe a UEFA referee for URU-FRA, but probably not for BRA-BEL if they both advance. Irmatov for that game due to his experience and confederation neutrality?

    4. Why should Caceres be out? I thought he did well.

    1. Oh please! Left UK at 7 yrs old, never represented England at anything and will for all intensive purposes will be handling a subs board.

    2. An all English speaking quintet did surprise me a little (I know MG can speak Spanish), I would have imagined a technical team of eg Pitti / Victoria but this should only be a minor point.

  3. The biggest surprise IMO is that we didn't see Gassama again. It was a solid performance with a penalty given after OFR - in the end no (big) mistake. I was not convinced by him at the Confederations Cup, but his first performance in Russia was definitely worth a second appointment. So, that is something I do not understand, especially if we compare it with Roldan's performance.
But let's wait. Collina is in charge - we all know that he can surprise us.

    1. I think this has something to do with the assistant referee fiasco just before the tournament... Even Aguilar in only 1 match even though he is so highly experienced is a very curious case!

    2. I agree on both, Gassama and Aguilar. Even if they were not seen ready for R16, they deserved a second match on MD3.

    3. I disagree. I think that the assessment has been exactly made on both penalties they missed. Too blatant to wait for VAR. Especially in Gassama's situation, I would have whistled without hesitation. I think they paid the fact that they looked to trust too much on VAR. Differently from Kuipers who whistled a too soft penalty and changed idea, in this case they didn't whistle it at all.
About the assistant referee, Soham, you have also to say that Etchiali from Algeria is very experienced, where is this problem? In case of good performance, they would have appointed for sure the Gambian again.
However, the compromise is third place final, but still a disappointment if you ask me.

    4. Cunha also had a penalty awarded by VAR but was the first ref to get a second game IMO I don't think that is the problem

    6. Very different situation, if you ask me.
In that case, almost impossible for referee to make an assessment. Remember that the first part of the action was regular.

    7. I think you have a point Chefren. Both situations were so clear...an even though we have VAR, the referees should have spot in both case the penalty themself. In some aspect I thought the same about Caceres in his first game (the penalty against Russia), that he chose the safer decision first but seems like the assessment was different.
I also think we won't see to appear any of the referees with one game in the group stage anymore.
I am really curious about Irmatov...based on his performance he wouldn't deserve further appointment, but it couldn't be always Faghani and Geiger for UEFA-Conmebol matches. And Irmatov has the experience, however I hope the recent performance is more important than palmares.
Probably the neutrality rule will be broken in quaterfinals. (Ricci, Cakir, Mazic are 99% names, I am really curious who will be the fourth.)

    8. It's important to note that both Aguilar and Gassama were missing one of their original ARs! Perhaps this is the reason.

  4. this time i have a lot of luck. i was with Rramos for France - Argentina, but it was Uruguay - Portugal. with Kuipers at Spain - Russia, Rocchi for Croatia-Denmark, but he have another game. and Skomina and Geiger for the tuesday match which i guessed. by the way i am paul 15 in the game predictions. so for the quarters i go with Mazic, Ricci, Cunha and maybe Cakir or Lahoz. another options is Irmatov for the Uruguay - France.
OT i am from Romania and could be some change in Hategan team, because his AR1, Octavian Sovre, this month will reach 45 years the age limit. and an AR very good who could replace Sovre is Valentin Avram.

  5. Lount replaced by Makasini (Tonga), maybe due to the fact he is born in the UK. But in any case horrible management by FIFA again

  6. Interesting to look at the VAR appointments in the 1/8 finals.

Makkelie and Irrati the most trusted VAR's. I guess they will be appointed for the last 3 matches. Geiger the only 'field' referee with an VAR appointment.

Tiago Martins and Soares Dias not used in the KO fase; they will go home I guess.

    1. The Roldan - Soares Dias poor communication might be a reason behind this!

    2. Also AlJassim has not been used in R16.

This is the 11th day (except the rest day) in the row, where Gil works as AVAR1. For Makkelie it is the 9th consecutive day in any role.

If there is a Spanish-speaking referee and not Brazil playing, Vigliano should also be a favourite for the last matches. Otherwise Zwayer or Orsato and maybe Geiger, if he doesn't referee himself.

  7. Communication in today's match between SWE & SUI will be probably 1/2 ITA & 1/2 ENG :-)

  8. When are the quarter final refs announced? Anyone know?
