  1. Interesting appointment for Kassai, maybe another (the last) chance for him for something big? I hope he can recover, he has been top referee for years but many, manu issues and troubles in his long career...
On another note, very good game for Kulbakov I must say!

    1. I really really hope that Kassai is doing well, because when he is, we all know that he is in top-form. I mean we all remember GER-ITA at Euro 2016 and no-one expected THIS comeback, delivering the probably best officiating at the tournament. Even after that, he's had good games, for instance TUR-CRO last year: despite missing an obvious penalty, he's shown a very strong personality and he's been an excellent game manager. I hope that is the Kassai that we will see in Naples on Wednesday.

Having said that, I think Kulbakov is really ready for a promotion to Elite. I think he really deserves it, having already officiated Benfica-Fenerbahce this year in CL qualifiers. Uilenberg being present in Dortmund might indicate that in case of a good performance, he might get his spot in Elite in December/January.

    2. Excellent game for Zwayer, too. As you have already mentioned, an important game for Kulbakov in front of Jaap Uilenberg, which indicates that the Committee observes him very closely.

  2. Mentioned this yesterday but no one else seems to have seen it - Juventus v Young Boys (Karasev), 71:37 game time (27:47 video time)

    https://openload.co/f/POmU1zvlq5A/juv_yb_2nd_half_eng.mp4

Karasev blew quickly for a foul and I was expecting a card but he awarded an indirect free kick, despite it looking like there was contact with the other player. Do you think VAR would have asked him to review the incident?

    2. If there is a contact, the referee has two options: softer one - yellow card and harsher one - red card. Direct free kick should have been awarded.

If there is no contact, the referee should assess if Juve player deliberately avoided it. If yes, still both cards are possible as the tackle would be classified as 'try to kick an opponent'. The referee should determine the nature of the tackle. Reckless or excessive force used. Again, a direct free kick should have been awarded.

In case Hoarau just missed his opponent and didn't touch him at all, it must be classified as dangerous play. Indirect free kick and possible YC for unsporting behaviour in order to punish the character of an offense.

In a nutshell, as the tackling player is out of control, both legs are off the ground, in case of any contact or Juve player deliberately avoiding contact it should've been a direct free kick and red card for serious foul play. In case of no contact at all, it's an indirect free kick and YC for unsporting behaviour. There is no possibility to issue a red card then.

You see it's complicated and not easy to decide on the pitch.

  3. Extraordinary Scenes in Napoli Liverpool youth game where Napoli's last minute equaliser was allowed to stand despite there being 3 balls on the pitch at the same time

    2. In my opinion gol is not regular. Not only some Liverpool's players, but I would dare to say even Avram himself was not 100% sure which was the "main" ball there... for sure a mismanagement leading to a goal. This could have been solved by stopping the game.

      Delete
    3. Technically it was only two balls on the pitch as the player at the halfway line hadn't taken the throw-in yet. The ball beside the referee may have confused a couple of players but those who ended up in the penalty area were playing on normally, and crucially so was the AR. Plus, look at the reaction of the Liverpool defenders.

The LOTG say the referee must "allow play to continue if it does not interfere with play" - so long as the thrown-in was taken from the correct place I would say it is a goal.

    2. 10': YC but not easy to be spotted, hover, basically a fair challenge.
17': there are for sure arguments if you want to back PLAY ON decision, the attacker ran into defender's path and the same player didn't asked for a penalty but continued to play. However, apparently it looks like a penalty and it can be whistled.

    4. I think Taylor can be supported in all the incidents.
The last one was assessed by Atkinson as well...

  5. 25' Kassai correctly books Koulibaly.

    ReplyDelete
  6. After 25 minutes without any single foul whistled (only offside calls), the first YC by Kassai to Koulibaly (Napoli) is in my opinion a correct decision.

    ReplyDelete
  7. very good performance by Kassai. Correct YC to Koulibaly of Napoli

  8. Kružliak-Griezmann collision ;)

  9. 41': I think missed YC by Kassai. A clear holding stopped a potentially dangerous counterattack. Albiol was lucky to escape without a card there and he stopped the opponent.

  10. Crucial mistake for me by Mažić in PSV - Inter. Handanovič handles the ball outside the bo, but only YC. DOGSO IMHO.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I don't agree with you, there were at least 3 defenders in the near area who could have intercepted the ball while heading towards goal. so no clear dogso in my opinion and a supportable yc for me.

      Delete
    2. For me the YC is OK. Now probably there were a missed offside before the 1-1 goal

      Delete
    3. For me YC is OK. Three defenders were near the goal. Just before 1-1 it was offside.

      Delete
    4. Replays were quite clear that he would have been past the keeper with the goal wide open. Of course a defender could have intervened, but if this isn't a clear scoring oppurtunity, I don't know what is.

      Delete
  11. Clear YC missed by Kassai at 41. Otherwise fully under control

    ReplyDelete
  12. Missed offside on the Inter equaliser. VAR stuff...

    ReplyDelete
  13. AR1 Ring so far very busy and an excellent performance, he got all offside calls right.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'd prefer Lamela's YC to be a RC. It's a deliberate arm to the head with no attempt to play the ball. If this action had been to the face, rather than to the back of the head, it would be a clear RC for VC.

I struggle with the argument (seemingly held by many) that an arm like this to the back of the head is not as bad as one to the face. The victim has no way to prepare for this act and the risk of concussion is just as high, if not worse.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Also correct 2nd booking for Milner.
Very good Kassai tonight, but not really difficult so far for him.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Mazic having a hard time now. Possible RC for GK Inter missed (handbal outside the box, but no direct scoring opportunity.) Equalizer by Inter within 2 minutes from this situation and a foul on the side line in midfield where there was no intention of playing the ball.

2nd half will be tough I assume.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think YC is supportable, just for the 3 defenders near the goal.
And Inter goal 1-1 was offside imo.

      Delete
    2. @-1 is VAR stuff, you cant blame AR for that, really hard to spot it live. Also if you're not sure you give advantage to attacker.

      Delete
    3. Agree, it was very difficult to spot live (it was work for a VAR), but it is a crucial mistake imo.

      Delete
    6. Are you kiddin me, it's a 10cm offside? Since when it is a crucial mistake without VAR?

      Delete
    7. *Offside situation*
Very difficult situation. Human eye can't see a 10cm offside... So, we need to support this decision.

      Delete
    8. I agree: it was very difficult to spot. I don't blame the AR as well, but for the game it was crucial. So is was a crucial mistake.

      Delete
    9. It is a difficult one, but I would expect the AR at this level, especially Djurdjevic who was one of the best AR in last UCL season, to raise the flag. In addition, movement of players was not so difficult to spot the offside. It should not be seen as crucial mistake as the goal was not scored directly from an offside position.
      Regards

  17. Zwayer struggle a little bit with foul detection in my opinion. But I must admit it's not easy because Barca players overreact some contacts, while Spurs players play very rough sometimes. To my taste he should be a little bit more authoritative, bit more alert.
Too much physcial contact with Messi, already in the beginning a clap on his shoulder, then also in the end of the first half the same. Could be a wrong message to the other team.
    ARs with good offside calls.

  18. Kružliak , excellent performance. Pleasant surprise for me , I didn't know him.

  19. Oliver is fully under control at first half in Porto.

GK's handball - SPA vs DOGSO

    1. Yeah, I've got red on both of those.

Zwayer's I've already addressed and the replay doesn't make it better.

In Mazic's, there are not three covering defenders at the moment of the handling. There is barely one. That's DOGSO.

      Delete
    2. Strike in the head while not fighting for the ball is a red card whatever force will be used (unless it's a 'peck on the cheek') nowadays.

I opt for a YC for GK's handball though. PSV player played the ball in such a manner he would've been in need of changing his running path, what would've given defenders enough time to cover the goal. SPA for my taste.

      Delete
    3. Vlad +1

but I think in favor of Lamela the dicision could be supportable, because the player didn`t use the force of his arm-movement, but the movement of his body. Imo it't the same as he just run in his opponent.

      Delete
    4. I simply disagree on the Inter/PSV situation. It would take a split second for a professional player to change trajectory and possess that ball. We see that move--where a player pushes the ball around one side of the defender and rounds him on the other--all the time. This would have very likely have resulted in a goal and, at the least, was an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. Saying otherwise defies reality for me.

      Delete
    5. But in the moment of the handball the attacker isn't in ball possesion. And he would have needed at least a few seconds. Enough time to recover.

      Delete
    6. I think, Lamela hits the neck rather than the head, therefore the LotG sentence about striking on the head is not applicable here.
You can still argue for RC, but not a black-and-white decision IMO.

      Delete
    7. A few seconds?! Come on.

And one needn't be in possession of the ball to trigger DOGSO. It's the likelihood to gain or maintain possession. In this case, there is a certainty that he would gain possession.

      Delete
    8. In my opinion YC for Lamela is OK. I don't perceive this action as violent conduct, for certain aspects it is the same speech we made about Cristiano Ronaldo. Here, the intensity of the blow plays a decisive role. Of course he had not reason to do that, but a RC would have been exaggerated.

Handanovic: I would prefer RC there. Without the handball, player would have immediately shot on goal with an empty net... DOGSO. Maybe YC will be supported but I think that a different angle of vision would have led Mazic to choose a different color there.

      Delete
    9. 100% agree with Chefren

About Lamela's YC: we know that barca's players have the tendency to overreact some contacts. Do you remember the theatrical scene of the same Busquets in 2010 CL 2nd leg semifinal when De Bleeckere sent off Thiago Motta ?

      Delete
    10. I would go for RC for Handanovic. The attacker was heading towards the goal with having the ball under control, and, very important, he would not be against goalkeeper on the goal, but defender...

      Delete
  23. 73' a wrong offside flag by Toth. Luckily, player didn't score but an OGSO and the subsequent corner were denied.

    1. Wrong onside for Salah. Also in this case player did not score but it’s the second wrong call in five minutes

      Delete
  24. Kassai gave 3 minutes of added time, the game, after the goal scored, was resumed about at 91:00. He whistled the end at 93:30.
At least 30 seconds were missing.
Apart from that, one could say OK performance by the Hungarian. AR1 was better than AR2 in terms of offside decisions, both were quite busy.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Good performance from Kruzliak in Madrid, but he sometimes struggled in positioning, intervened in the play at least twice.

    ReplyDelete
  26. There were no problems with Kulbakov. 16 fouls, 0 cards, penalty. All onside/offside are correct.

  27. So, overall Wednesday's officiating has been for sure better than the previous day and with several positive notes.
    I try to summarize.

    PSG - Crvena zvezda
I think this was not a real test for the Portuguese, given the score, I can't imagine any difficulty there.

    Lokomotiv Moskva - Schalke 04
Thank to the videos posted by Vlad, we can say that Taylor was OK at least regarding crucial decisions, some penalty appeals, but the English had his arguments to play on.

    Atlético Madrid - Brugge
A positive impression was reported by several readers there, with a small point for improvement regarding positioning.

    Borussia Dortmund - Monaco
Expected level for Kulbakov with one crucial decision correctly taken and a missed YC. Good performance by assistant referees as well.

    Tottenham - Barcelona
Based on the clips you have posted, I assume expected level for Zwayer, points for discussion regarding the possible RC to Lamela, but personally I would back referee.

    Napoli - Liverpool
Maybe one or two missed cards, but sometimes this is Kassai's style, asbsolutely no problems in terms of control. Both assistant referees very challenged.

    Porto - Galatasaray
Only one comment about this game, at the end of first half it was reported a full control by Oliver. I think nothing extra-ordinary happened until the end.

    PSV - Inter
For sure the most difficult game of the day, in terms of decisions. Handanovic situation is very controversial, my feeling is that RC should have been issued but maybe the Serbian will be supported there. We are quite far away, in any case, from a clear "crucial mistake".
AR1 with a tight offside missed, but that's VAR stuff as well...

  28. Hi, since we had (fortunately) a lot of first time in UCL group stage match, can you summarize in a dedicated post, how did they perform ?

    ReplyDelete
  29. In general I congratulate Rosetti and comission for being brave enough to give many new talents the chance to prove their abilities on a higher level. And in nearly all of those games the ref's were at least on an acceptable level. The problems came from the older ones - esp. Skomina was a bad surprise. And Mazic/Kralovec under their normal level. But I was really impressed by many of the new faces making big steps into Elite. Well done!
