  1. UEL debuts for Martínez Munuera, Guida, Reinshreiber and Schüttengruber.

Committee Members for Reinshreiber and Massa.

    1. Can the presence of a committee member for Massa hint at a potential CL group stage debut this season? If Italy wants a referee in Elite after Rocchi and Orsato, it's now the time to focus on Massa.

      Delete
    2. Israel make a huge improvement. After Grinfeld goes to UCL, now Reinshreiber will be tested in UEL. Unfortunately, Liany was retired earlier.

      Delete
    3. Yes of course, now focus must be on Massa, Rocchi will retire soon (no more than another year as FIFA referee), Orsato will be out after EURO 2020, Banti and Mazzoleni will retire in a few months. After Guida, maybe Irrati has chances to make his EL debut as well on next matchdays!

    4. @ayomaju I was never fully convinced by Liany.
I think that the names you mentioned can be better options.
      Let's see.

      Delete
    5. Liany always suffers from the lack of authority. Never really respected by the players - watxhed him yesterday, nothing new... Reinschreiber also has this problem, but hopefully he'll improve this.
As for Grinfeld, I hope that at CL he'll not use his usual super-arrogant style. Good luck, Roi and Orel.

      Delete
    6. @Chefren & @Daniel G I agree that Liany didn't improve very well although so many chances given by Collina but Grinfeld did...
Irrati should be have a match before Guida, I think we will see soon in UEL and perhaps so many more debutants we'll find since Rosetti looks make a lot of changes...

  2. If I am not wrong, Stieler did not get a match in first two MDs. Not a good sign...

    1. No, it's strange, this week he will be AAR with Zwayer in Tottenham-Barcelona, but in MD1, he was neither appointed as main referee in UEL nor appointed as AAR in UCL, even if there were 2 German referee teams (Brych in Valencia-Juventus and Aytekin in Young Boys-Manchester United)

      Delete
    2. I just checked, his first match in Bundesliga was in the middle of September. Any German readers knows if he was injured maybe?

      Delete
    3. It's not unsual, that some Bundesliga-referees did not get many matches this season so far. The DFB increased the number of referees that will officiate Bundesliga-matches this season during summer, because of the increased demands that come with the VAR.

      Delete
  3. Welz came back to UEL; it's amazing for me !!! Which expectation do you think for him ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Cant imagine him in CL. Siebert and Stieler with more perspektive than Welz.

But good to see him after season missed cause of injury

      Delete
    2. After officiating some 2. Bundesliga-matches (Leage below the Bundesliga) at the end of the previous season, he showed some real impressive performances within the last weeks, for example the Bundesliga-match between Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen.
An Achilles tendon tore ist really the most nasty injury for any athlete and I'm glad he recovored and that he found back to old strength.

      Delete
  4. I see that Melo Pereira and Fernandez Marin are both appointed as observers.

The duo responsible for the Greek refereeing mess is rewarded by UEFA. Great.......

    ReplyDelete
  5. Maurizio Mariani will make his debut as UEFA AAR, this should mean that, along with Fabbri, he will get the badge on January, prevailing on the other contender, Maresca.
So I would say out Banti and Mazzoleni, in Fabbri and Mariani.

      Regards!

    1. Good teamwork, this decision needed cooperation between the officials because on the original pass player was onside. The touch by teammate was spotted and then the offside correctly detected.

    3. Madden's not having the best week - he missed a probable RC in the Celtic v Aberdeen game on Saturday, and the player has now been banned for 2 matches: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/45735984

  10. Interesting situation for Reinshreiber at the end of first half: he booked a player and decided for a penalty. Foul was not a genuine attempt to play the ball, but a push from behind. Maybe it wasn't assessed as DOGSO because the attacker was not in clear possession of the ball, one can also discuss about the intensity of the foul.

  11. "Particular" end of first half in Salzburg: Boyko at first allowed the execution of a corner kick, but then he whistled the end immediately after the player had touched the ball...

  12. 2-1 by Leverkusen looks to be offside.

    1. When the ball hits a teammate (I think it does) final scorer is like 1m offside, and AR2 misses it.

Also in the first shot he can be already offside.

      I would say if it's a foul then it's a correct RC.

The Salzburg player is tripped by the Celtic player on the ground - but to me that's only because he was pushed over! Bit harsh, though I am a Celtic fan...

I'd say Boyko had a decent game, though his YC for time wasting to the Celtic defender was a surprise as there had been no visible warnings, and other players had time wasted for longer before that!

  16. Good performance from Tobias Welz in Istanbul.

Correctly rejected two penalty appeals (undeliberate handball -> short distance, natural position, ball to hand // Spartak player creating head contact with an opponent's arm).

He chose to be lenient but alert. Some good verbal warnings and first YC shown as late as possible, in 70th minute. Earlier in the game, there were four incidents where yellow cards for reckless fouls would have been correct or even expected. Welz didn't issue them but the control of the game and players was not in danger through the whole game. Four yellow cards in total, all of them spot on (two stamps, tackle and illegal use of arm).

Correct YC issued by Gözübüyük to keeper for strong dissent after the goal.

  20. No idea how AAR2 misread that penalty kick situation

  21. It was exactly in front of AAR2. Strong arguments for a whistle there, I think crucial mistake...

  22. Straight RC for SFP for Joaquín Correa.

Late challenge, but IMO still too harsh from Gozubuyuk.

I'd like to debate about it.

    ReplyDelete
  23. What a game for Gozubuyuk in Frankfurt.
He has sent off two players from SS Lazio: in first half, Basta got two YC, the second was for a blatant holding stopping a counterattack, players were quite far away from the other penalty area, but the decision is fully justified, according to recent RAP editions (showing a lack of respect for the game with blatant holdings).
The second RC was for a SFP: it must be rewatched.
In addition, there were some protests by Eintracht when Lazio scored 1-1 due to a possible handball when the action started. I think a classic grey area.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Both YC for Basta were fully justified: first one was for a reckless stamp, second one for SPA.
However, I’m having doubts about the RC, the foul was more reckless for me tbh. However, it would be nice to have a clip.

Minute 67: now a penalty appeal for Lazio, rejected by Gözübüyük.

      Delete
    2. Didn't watch the 2nd YC, only could spot the straight RC.

Correa did a very late challenge, probably because of frustration, but for me looks way more reckless than SFP, too harsh decision.

  24. Any information about the game in Frankfurt? Gözübüyük with a 2nd YC at the end of the first half and now a straight RC was issued (both for Lazio). It is reported that he - at first - forgot to send off the player, who has already been booked. According to this newspaper, the German players informed the referee about that.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It looked indeed a bit odd, as the RC was issued with some delay, and Frankfurt players were surrounding Gözübüyük. Didn’t look that good in terms of self-presentation.

      Delete
    2. I missed this particular but indeed RC was shown with a certain delay, I think referee had forgotten that player was already booked.

      Delete
    3. I think second yellow card was way to harsh. I doubt these kinds of holding are considered blatant, and holding was on the defensive line of penalty area! Complete field to cross...
Red card was a reckless tackle on the foot, no more then yellow card.
Gozbuyuk to much influencing the result

      Delete
    4. No. That's an overinterpretation of the facts. He gave the YC and saw in his notices, that it was the 2nd, so there was a little delay of max 5 seconds.
But the "pure" RC was too harsh in my view - ref was quite far away... the only sit.where I cannot follow him. He is brave for sure, but should avoid to give the merciless avenger. We do not need a modern version of Lopez Nieto...

In my opinion a mistake. Reckless from behind, nothing more but surely a mandatory YC.

    4. I think second RC is supportable although YC was the better decision. Player goes in reckless and way too late. Probably a tackle out of frustration but there was intent for sure. Also studs caught the calf as mentioned before.

So the only opinion Chefren is allowed to share regarding these incidents is agreeing with the decisions because he is Italian? That’s quite laughable don’t you think?

Instead of accusing Chefren - and Niclas at the same time - you could also participate in the discussion and present arguments why both situations are no penalties in your opinion.

    10. As a Dutchman, Unknown will probably say I am biased too. :)

Chefren, my full support for you and your objectivity.

However, I think a red card is a good decision. It's a tackle that can endanger the opponent, no possibility to play the ball. Red card justified for me. We all want this kind of fouls out of our game.
      But I accept other interpretations.

I do agree however that Gozobuyuk isn't really ready for this kind of matches. He lacks the real natural authority, that Makkelie f.e. has.

    11. Gözübüyük made his own life difficult due to the unnecessary YC in 21’, when a warning would have sufficed.

However, I have to admire his consistency - all similar fouls resulted in YCs.
The penalty appeals were weak. Both Gavinovic and Immobile knew they couldn’t get anywhere and we’re happy to just try for a penalty. I am 100% with the ref on that.

The SPF RC ... well, the highlight doesn’t tell the story. The Italian player was pissed off because he had been duped. If you watch the previous 20 seconds, it is clear that the foul was massively out of frustration, with absolutely no intent to even get close to the ball. It’s more than reckless. It’s not brutal either, but certainly no crucial mistake.

Overall, I thought he did well in a challenging match, although he was partly responsible for making it challenging, too.

  30. Very good Bebek tonight.
Not a challenging match, but very active Bebek.
He dished out 2 YC's,both were for protesting, rest of the match he was fully under control.
I would not be surprised if he gets one CL match this year based on his performances this year, but he lacks some bigger and more challenging matches IMO for a referee that is in 1st group.

  31. I watched (more or less) the full match of Serdar Gözübüyük.

    Relevant Situations
Opening YC of the match 21' (https://streamable.com/ap1ey)
    2nd YC, Stopping a Promising Attack +46' (https://streamable.com/3m5rr)
RC, Serious Foul Play 57' (https://streamable.com/4tfp6)

First I should talk about 21': I like that Gözübüyük tried to take SPA out of the match, it is irritating to just see a referee caution clear tactical fouls, and ignore anything below that 'line'. But, my feeling is he rather inflamed the match with this decision, nobody expected a YC; a quiet or even firm warning would have been the better solution.

Thanks to having a zero-tolerance line regarding SPA, he was kind of 'forced' to issue a YC at +46'. At least his self-presentation gave the impression it was 'forced'. No crucial mistake because I think there were some arguments for a caution (it wasn't black-white, at least IMO), but self-evident of a not really smart/modern piece of refereeing.

I would be interested to see if UEFA decided the direct RC at 57' was a crucial mistake, hopefully next RAP can tell us sth at least.

Otherwise, I don't think his performance was a huge disaster, even if it wasn't so good either.
Fouls Detection was not an especially high level but adequate, rest of the cards were okay, assistants performed well.
I am not sure about his relations with the players, sometimes he doesn't seem firm enough, sometimes a bit too arrogant (it is okay to be firm but it seemed there was no real target behind this, it just 'pissed off' players without needing to), and the moments which required a bit of firmness perhaps it was missing.
He didn't really arouse so much trust in the players, also thanks to some of his decisions.

Still I think he showed why UEFA regard him as a talent, but he needs to refine these skills, and tonight was hardly his best advert for a recommendation of higher tasks.

    1. Really difficult to evaluate this performance. In all four big decisions (both sending-offs and the penalty appeals mentioned above), in my opinion the opposite decision would have been better/correct. However I am not sure, whether any of these can be counted as clear mistakes, because they are all more or less in a grey zone (which shows once again, that this grey zone is too big at the moment IMO).
His chances for a CL debut might have decreased with this match, although this, of course, depends on UEFA's opinion on it.

    2. @Philipp (and all readers, of course) do you know anything about Guida performance in Rosenborg - Leipzig? It would be interesting to know how he performed in his EL debut.
I saw that there were some doubts about a possible handball before 0-2, but in case mostly AAR2 responsibility, and then, if I'm not wrong, a difficult free kick or penalty decision.

    1. Thanks Chefren, that makes a very interesting read.

Could you inform about the ranking/marking system of AIA, Rocchi leads the table with "8,6250" points, so surely differing from the system in UEFA?

    2. @Quilava Gavillucci was removed from serie A referees at the end of last season due to technical reasons and he made an appeal against this decision.
Main problem with Italian referees association is that the technical choices are made not only based on the marks and the ranking, but there are also other assessments like age, perspectives, and even geographical origin. About the latter, for example, if you have a certain number of referees from a region, all officiating in serie A, in case of technical choice to be made, one of these referees could be dismissed also for that reason.
Having said that, in my opinion Gavillucci was not the worst referee of last season but this decision was taken also because he was "in danger" in previous years and he never convinced the committee. Gavillucci is 39 years old. This has been for sure another argument against him, because in my opinion in serie A there is a worse referee than him, but younger.
To add, Gavillucci ended last season with two games in a row: Sampdoria - Napoli and then Udinese - Bologna on last matchday. For sure, this was not something in favor of the final choice made by Rizzoli to dismiss him... what referees want is more transparency, they could even accept the rankings, but choices are made with very subjective criteria.

@Mikael The answer for you will follow on next comment :D

Indeed, Italian assessments for referees performance are not the same as UEFA ones.
At first, I want to present the scale of marks, here a picture (this is from an official document written by AIA technical sector):
      https://i.postimg.cc/d38fhbqY/image.jpg
We have a range from 8.70 to 8.20.

8.70 Excellent performance without any single mistake, I would say "faultless" (in the real meaning of the term).- For what I know, this mark is very rare and almost neve assigned.

8.60 Very good performance, a step below the previous assessment, referee has fully convinced and he is absolutely reliable for very difficult games.

8.50 I would compare this to the classic UEFA "expected level", referee did everything good, but this was something you expected from that referee, he can be ready for something more.

8.40 Just "sufficient", referee was OK, but making an assessment and looking at the future, referee doesn't show enough skills to make a further step.

8.30 Disappointing, referee didn't meet the required standard for officiating the game and his performance was below expectations.

8.20 Inadequate: referee has shown significant deficiencies, he is not a reliable official and he should be appointed "carefully" only for a few games.

      CONCLUSIONS
As you have probably noticed, not only the range of marks, but also the concepts are quite different from UEFA guidelines. Crucial mistakes don't affect directly the mark as we see for UEFA, but for sure they contribute to a low mark, it can be 8.40 or 8.30. For what I know, in serie A the expected level performance is 8.50. If a referee gets 8.40 that's not a good signal. Even if this scale is not so much long, the real marks are very likely even more limited as well. This is of course different in lower categories, when you have these same marks but they are for sure more suitable for a clear assessment of the referee, especially looking at his future.

    4. If Rocchi has 8,625 on average, he must have gotten a 8,7 in at least a quart of his matches...

Having place 1-10 completely with (former) FIFA referees raises some doubts, whether names/reputation play a certain role in the assessment. The same could also be observed in rankings from Spain, that were posted in the blog in the past.

    5. Very interesting info, thank you!

As a small observation, we can say that Rocchi achieved the full 8,70 mark some times last season, perhaps in Juventus - Napoli and/or Inter - Lazio towards the end of the season.

This case slightly reminds me on from England, although about age discrimination, which can be a thesis to explain how so many referee above forty-five are officiating in PL .

  35. I just saw twenty-six years old Willy Delajod officiate Toulouse - Nice in Ligue 1.
Match was played pretty calmly, and not presenting bigger challenges for the referee team; it was interesting to watch how this young referee would perform.

=> To be honest I was a bit disappointed with his foul detection. Referee declined to whistle some clear(er) fouls, and whistled a relatively large amount of zero fouls- he presented quite a weak fouls detection/selection at this level, especially as the match wasn't beyond normal difficulty.
In quite an amicable match, referee decided for thirty-eight fouls, which could have probably been a bit lower with a different approach.

=> He showed a good ability to read and manage 'temperature' of the match. Small, but isolated verbal warning at 36' was self-evident of this. His card selection (three for: SPA, Reckless Tackle, SPA) logically followed from that and was good.

=> He showed a good ability to manage the players, what was quite impressive from such a young referee; it is not difficult to see why he is already L1 referee at twenty-six.

    * The last point is a more generalistic one, not so much about Toulouse - Nice.

Delajod became L1 referee at almost exactly the same age as Turpin (2008) and Letexier (2016). If we include Lannoy (rather at UEFA/FIFA not national level), we can say that FFF has a big tendency to focus on some particular referees early and fast-track them quite quickly.
I think, one must say, that these cases don't always end in such a 'happy' case like Turpin (who could very well officiate EL Final this season)...

In summary, Willy Delajod showed to be a talented referee in this match.
Still, he needs time to develop to be a top class referee on this level, his fouls detection were a bit too weak tonight.
But looking beyond just Toulouse - Nice, I would watch out for his name in the future.
