DeleteOT: FIFA officialy published the list of officials for FIFA u20 in Poland. Three interesting things caught my eye:
ReplyDelete1. in the article, it is sais "FIFA Refereeing Subdivision...". I am not sure if that means that Refereeing Department is maybe re-organised or renamed to Refereeing Subdivision, or it is just unintentional choice of words.
2) Alan Kelly still from IRL, although listed in CONCACAF section.
3) At the bottom of the pdf it is said that headquarters will be in Sopot (Gdynia).
Kelly does not have US citizenship. I suspect that, in FIFA's eyes, the justification for his inclusion is as a "former FIFA" (just like Edvin Jurisevic and Kevin Stott). So, despite being nominated through CONCACAF, he is considered an Irish official for FIFA purposes.

Levnikov with two penalties for handball in first half. Second one was DOGSO on the line. Unluckily Italian broadcaster for national team is definitely a very poor one and replays are not good. Based just on perception, I can say that first one was very likely a correct decision, but big doubts about the incident on the line, it is possible that player didn't touch the ball by arm, but another part of his body. I'm really sorry but I can't say more... really disappointing to have such a broadcaster for national team's games.

DeleteSorry but it was again a very bad game by Skomina and his assistants. First goal of Switzerland handball in the build-up, then Poulsen equalized but he was wrongly adjudged to be offside. Doubt that Skomina will get any big matches in the Champs League after this pergormance.

Makkelie with an excellent job in Zenica, considering the last encounter between both teams ended in a massive confrontation between players of both teams. Ref was in full control throughout the entire match and killed irritations right before they were born using his strong personality skills. Greek penalty after a trip/step on the foot was correct, as well as the Pjanic’s red card for a studs up challenge on opponent’s shin. I really enjoyed Makkelie’s performance!

ReplyDeleteTobias Stieler handled the Albania - Turkey game. One could expect a combative match for the German, at least a high foul count of forty-four should be testament to that. Stieler never lost the overview, and in the end this match was not especially distinguishable from a fully 'normal' qualifier, which should be at least partly Stieler's merit. He had a clear game-plan, also with Mike Pickela and Christian Gittelmann ARs, to whistle minor contacts in the early stages and once the game was sufficiently calm, allow the game to "breathe" again by following Stieler's 'regular' line. I was not fully convinced by his line in fouls, it was quite unpredictable at times not helped by a number of partly late whistles some which were too expected and some nobody expected. I don't know whether his tactic worked, but at least the game remained pretty calm, thanks to a really convincing management. Stieler is an excellent psychologist on the pitch, able to use a range of different tones in order to reach his targets with the players, this really impressed me. While the players didn't fully "trust" his decisions, they certainly "respected" him (a LOT), my worry for Stieler in even hotter games if the "respect" isn't there, he may begin to struggle. This should be criticism on a high level though, and taken as sth to consider.
A question rather of when not if that Stieler will ascend to Elite.
I also watched the Luxembourg - Ukraine game, handled by Mattias Gestranius. I was surprised to read his name for such a "small" game, but Luxembourg played an excellent match that was pretty thrilling right until the end, they lost in partly 'tragic' circumstances when they really ought to have won. Gestranius certainly didn't underestimate this game, and I really appreciated his attitude. He sorted out six cautions, I agreed with all besides the last. He missed a couple of cautions, for a standing leg tackle (58') and a dark caution at 86' which the referee team missed on a perception level, Petri Viljanen as FO could have helped there. The freekick awarded from which Luxembourg scored their own goal at +92', was misread by Jan-Peter Aravirta AR1 as I think it was fully fair, and from which Gestranius showed his final YC of the game. Probably Mr Aravitra will lose 0,2 points there. Speaking generally about the refereeing, I really liked his firm attitude on dissents, which were fully not tolerated including a caution, pleasant to see. His foul detection was very good although assessment of duels was relatively easy, and I liked the human way of dealing with the players, one has the impression that you could see Gestranius shopping in your local supermarket, if you know what I mean.
A sound performance from Gestranius in the season that his career really took off. I would like to see him in Elite if he carries on like this.

ReplyDeleteI must say Makkelie with another very good performance in a difficult game. Bosnia - Greece was surely not easy, given also the past meeting between the teams and hot atmosphere. RC is fully correct, in this case in my opinion point of contact plays a more important role than intensity. Excellent alertness by Dutch. Penalty correct as well.

Yes i fully agree, as a Greek man I show the full match. He showed his authority early in the game, when he issued 2 YC untill the 15th minute and had everything under control from the beginning. Player's respected his decisions. The 2 major decisions were the penalty kick where he had a clear view and whistled immediately correctly. One minute later he issued a straight RC for serious foul play, we can back his decision indepentedly if the offender catches the ball first. The only negative i can find is the enroachment in the penalty kick. I know all referees show special tollerance towards this but he should be proactive telling the players to stay out of the box cause at the moment of the kick one greek player was level with the penalty kicker.

DeleteThe penalty is a fully correct decision. He had a very good position and assessed it immediately. About the RC. The referee can surely be backed even though it's not 100% clear. The intensity is medium but on such tackles there is a good chance of players injury. I like to see more referees punish with a RC such challenges.
Makkelie should be happy with yesterday's performance. In my eyes he could even expect a EL SF appointment.

DeleteI can agree with the penalty. I watched only a single re-play, not best re-play. It wasn't the clearest penalty in the world but the referee can be backed without any problem.
About red card I have huge doubts. In 90% of cases this is NOT a red card. For me it's a mistake of Makkelie. Also, it's a matter of common sense to be cautios to show such a red card after that penalty.
No doubt that Makkelie will be backed by referee observer and UEFA for both decisions. But one can't show in an important game like this a red card for such a foul (Bosnia and Greece will fight for 2nd place in this group; that 2-2 was superimportant for Greece, obviously).

I don't think it's a matter of being lenient. Personally I've always had a difficulty with this particular law. Because in principle with every PK there is an encroachment. If you want to be strict then every PK should be retaken. Same for the GK who should be on the goal line, but is off most of the times. For the referees it's very difficult to control the taker and players at the same time. Besides this what impact does the encroached players have when the PK is scored? In my opinion none. When the ball rebounds to an encroached player then I see a real advantage. Perhaps good to change this law. Because now it's not clear, one meter is ok, two meters is too far... etc.

DeleteSinovi. The penalty is correct. He got stamped on the shoe by the opponent. He exaggerated his fall but still a foul. The red card is super clear 100% studs right in the shin/calf. Serious foul play, nothing to talk about.
