  1. Wow: Two matches in a row for Makkelie, observed by Fandel and Batta. EL final maybe for him this season?

  2. So it is now clear, no room at all for refeeres without VAR experience.
Committee has made this choice, Makkelie with his second assignment, a very good signal for him.

  3. EL final for Makkelie would for sure be possible. Important match, but the score isn't that interesting anymore. Good preperation for the final. Besides,no chance that Dutch teams reach the final....

  4. Brych "fired" his ARs in Bundesliga. Strange to see this working.

  5. Very nice to see Makkelie with a second appointment. Absolutely deserved and the score can still be interesting. We have seen more surprises in the UCL last year and the year before.

  6. Turpin will not have a game in Champions League Round of 16? He worked with VAR in France, he was only in EL. Maybe at Porto-Roma?

    1. Yes for sure he will get a game.
My prediction is Bayern - Liverpool on next week.

    2. I think kuipers for bayern liverpool and turpin for juve atleti.

    3. Cuneyt Cakir has been appointed for Porto-Roma

  7. Juventus vs Napoli. Second red card I don’t understand why. Ball wouldn’t have gone to any attacker so how is that SPA?

Penalty: Never ever a deliberate handball and it touched the stomach first. He wanted ti head the ball but missed it and then the ball was shot on his natural arm.

    1. Rocchi had an extremely challenging game. Meret sending off was a crucial decision, one can discuss about this choice as well. According to some reports, the contact seems to be not so clear. In addition, to be checked whether it was a real DOGSO scenario or not.
Let me also add, after so many games in serie A, I'm not so much sure about the fact that he will remain on next season in serie A panel. He could retire, especially in case of big assignment in this European KO stage.

  8. Partly off-topic, but I watched Pavel Královec officiate a small Prague derby, Bohemians - Slavia, earlier today. Game was not so demanding for the Czech no.1 referee, also thanks to the clear victory of the away team (0-3).

We have to start by talking about THE crucial decision for the outcome. Královec awarded a penalty to Slavia after intervention by Miroslav Zelinka who was VAR, in the process cancelling a goal for Bohemians. It is reported that this is the first instance of such event in Czechia. The penalty was assigned for holding (not the potential handling offense). While it would not have been a big mistake to blow for a penalty in the first place, this is no way a clear and obvious error to call the referee to an on-field review, in my opinion. The full sequence can be found in the link below:

    https://streamable.com/2em1o

About the rest: Královec allowed much at the start what was surely part of his 'game-plan' for this derby (reckless elbow at 3', studs tackle not even whistled at 15'), and opened the cards at the aforementioned penalty scene. The next caution (31') was a really smart decision; cautioning Slavia no.21 for delaying the restart was in theory avoidable with some management especially as the freekick was taken from the wrong place, but it calmed down the Bohemians players and the audience who were still furious about the VAR intervention. The other two cautions, for a reckless tackle after a well-played advantage (31') and a blatant tactical foul (84') were correct.

I appreciated the firm style of Královec. He was prepared to explain things calmly to the players when possible, but also he wasn't willing to tolerate bigger dissents and reacted against them. This was the right approach for such match.

Anybody who is interested to watch the full match can do so in the link below:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_y7YoIQfg34

I think that 'we' forgot that Czechia is operating week-to-week with Video Assistant Referee system.
Could we see Pavel Královec handle a remaining Champions League match?

    1. Mikaeal, thank you again for all your reports. Always a pleasure to read. Indeed, I didn't know that Czech Republic has introduced VAR. That's a very good thing for Královec. Small chances for a CL appointment? In case, Manchester City - Schalke woule be my choice, but I think very difficult to see him.
About the crucial decision in today's derby, I agree with you. Never a clear mistake. VAR intervention was wrong there.

Pretty eventful first matchday for Chinese Super League. Five red cards shown in five games by Clattenburg, Mazic, Ma Ning, Zhang lei, and Wang Jing (not FIFA listed).

Interesting situation for Mazic. RC for elbowing but he even didn't whistle the foul. VAR intervend. After OFR, he gave one player RC. Then he went talk to his FIFA-listed AR on the farther side. This could be a language problem, and it seems his radio didn't work well. He canceled the RC and gave another player RC. However, I think both players should be sent off.

Rest of the RC are just normal second YC.

    1. Really sory for Mazic... very poor management there.
Maybe he got a game too early, he has to make practice with the new language and maybe a different way of officiating.

      Delete
    2. Oh dear, oh dear. Firstly how does Mazic not see the elbow himself? Secondly having watched it on the screen surely its obvious its #22? How to make a good FIFA ref look amateurish

      Delete
    3. When I say language problems I mean the the other AR who isn't FIFA listed probably can't speak English fluently. I don't really expect him to master Chinese; it's just to hard.

Manuel de Sousa in Portuguese derby. 2 consecutive YC for SPA-blatant holding and confrontation.

    1. Excellent decision in my opinion! Of course, one of the Porto players needs get booked too (e.g. Pepe) but I think he was.

      Delete
    2. Fully correct, agree with estkane. Pepe should be booked as well and the Benfica player should get a further ban for his disrespectful behaviour after the decision.

      Delete
    3. I agree with you both, fully correct decision by Jorge Sousa. I liked how he communicated the decision to the audience (Felipe was cautioned for Porto).
Brahimi also could have been sent off for a violent conduct, I don't know if this video clip shows it, but no clear and obvious error at least for my taste.

Sousa was much improved from the Sporting - Braga game where he looked pretty rusty after his long-term injury. I liked his performance, it showed that humility can be a formula for success even in the hottest games (à la Çakır).

I look forward to seeing him again on a UEFA level next season.

  12. I'm very curious about Brych's appearance tonight. It looks like he asked UEFA to exchange his assistants as well. It's also interesting that Dankert was recently replaced by Günter Perl as VAR in a Bundesliga match with Felix Brych.

  13. So far a very good Brych. Two mandatory YC and a good clear line of foul detection. Full acceptance by the players.

  14. 0-3 Ajax: ball is clearly out, throw-in missed by AR. Goal should be annulled.

    1. Haven’t seen a convincing reply yet. Side line Technology is the only solution.

    2. I'm not that sure the ball was 100% out.

      Very difficult.

    3. Because it was an objective decision

    4. No clear image => no clear error.

      Delete
    5. It is impossible to determine whether the ball is fully out or not. Therefore, as it can't be a clear mistake, goal should stand.

      Delete
    6. Impossible to be absolutely sure the ball crossed the line. Goal needed to be awarded before it got ridiculous, because it takes ages.

      Delete
    7. Impossible to be 100% sure after having checked every possible camera. So, one cannot do anything but validate the goal.

      Delete
  15. Difficult, brave and IMO right decision.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Situations like these are very hard to detect for the AR because of the distance and the speed of play. Camera’s like GLT on the side line would be the only solution. No mistake for Brych nor the AR for me

  19. 2 consecutive YC for Nacho. Reckless + confrontation?

  20. Brave, and correct, red card: push in the face. Not worthy of straight red, but both are bookable offenses for sure.

    1. Agree, brave and fully correct

    2. Yes, fully correct. Besides, he had been warned seconds before that. Consequences of frustration…

  21. Strong officiating from Brych in an excellent game between Real Madrid vs Ajax. Correct decision to 2 issue Nacho a red card for 2 bookable offences (reckless tackle and unsporting behaviour (adopting aggressive attitude in UK).

Does anyone else think this could have been prevented if Brych gave awarded a freekick to RM for what in my opinion is a foul on Nacho (safe/preventative refereeing)? As I believe this leads Nacho to take the law in to his own hands and seek revenge: https://streamable.com/ly2z1

    1. A free kick on the edge of the penalty area like that isn't "preventative refereeing"...

      Delete
    2. Nacho had 5 seconds to think if "taking the law in his own hands" was a good decision...

      Delete
    3. It is easy with hindsight but I don't think there would have been any complaints if Nacho was awarded a free kick (for me it is a foul and the game is essentially dead with RM resigned to being knocked out of the Champions League). It is clear from the replay that the no freekick is what ignites Nacho to commit such a foul

  22. Bastian Dankert showed to be (one of) the best Video Assistant Referees in the world in the last time.
    First class.

  23. Very good performance by Felix Brych at Santiago Bernabeu. Always remained calm during the match, stayed in the background, one could clearly see his massive experience in this clash.
=> on the VAR review: impossible to say whether ball was in or out, on the first angle shown on TV, it looked as if the ball was out, however, the second angle shown contradicts this. No clear and obvious mistake, therefore absolutely right to allow the goal.
=> on the the two consecutive yellows: excellent decision for my taste. First he books the tackle, then Nacho loses his nerves, and receives his second yellow for that!

IMO, tonight was a clear demonstration that Brych is still by far the German no. 1 in refereeing, in opposition to his countryman Felix Zwayer.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Agree that it was a very good match by Brych and team. The VAR took a bit long, but no clear and obvious error based on the angles available. Nice work.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Very good performance by Felix Brych. He showed his personality on that match. Calm, always in control and very good decision-making. Both YC's to Nacho was correct decisions.

    Well done, mr Brych.

  27. I would like to concur with everyone that this was, I thought, an excellent performance from Brych. Back to his best after a somewhat shaky group stage. Correct red card for Nacho for two separate yellow card offences in close proximity during the dying minutes of the game.

    1. Looks like a solid performance of the Dutch team. According to the statistics even without cards. Together with Brych who did a great job in Madrid UEFA can be happy so far. Looking forward to tonight's matches.

    2. Only Problem imo is, that the ARs didn't respect the VAR protocol. Even tight offside positions were decided immediately

      Delete
    3. I noticed that, too. Especially when you consider that there is VAR in the Netherlands as well.

      Delete
    4. Protocol on fifa website: Delaying the flag/whistle for an offence is only permissible in a very clear attacking situation when a player is about to score a goal or has a clear run
into/towards the opponents’ penalty area. So when the player goes more to the side/touchline delaying is already not permitted any more. Mostly it will be interpretation. So even a promising attack will not always be a reason to delay.

      Delete
  29. Can someone explain to me about Brych's 'fight' with his ARs?
    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Brych has partially blamed his assistants Borsch and Lupp for his recent weaker performance, which they didn't accept. After that, Brych has asked DFB for a temporary change of assistants, which they have agreed to (he had different assistants for Schalke-Düsseldorf last weekend). He also requested the same at UEFA it seems, but they refused to grant his wish.

      Delete
    2. I still find this as very strange. After so many years Brych, Borsch and Lupp should be more than friends. EURO 2020 is the last big tournament they are about to attend, so why that?
Really no explanations for me, everything was OK in 7 or 8 seasons and now? It would be interesting to know really more about what happened between them.
Also, in Champions League at this level, and with VAR introduction, it was impossible to see Brych suddenly with different assistant referees...
