  3. Maresca !!! I invite everyone to watch him, he turned on the engines, will do the same fast run made by Cerro Grande.

Italy desperately needs new Elite referees!

  4. France with three crews on one day...wow.

On a side note, does anyone have an idea why Frappart is getting men's matches while Steinhaus is not? Steinhaus referees men's in Germany (so I assume she passes men's physical standards), but I can't recall her ever getting a men's match at UEFA or FIFA levels. Why? Is that a personal choice (she doesn't want to), or is there another reason?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I assume, that Frappart is simply ahead of Steinhaus in UEFA's favour. At last year's supercup, Steinhaus was injured anyway.
But if more UEFA games are given to women, I would think that Steinhaus and Monzul should be among the front-runners to get one.
At least, I don't know any reason, why Steinhaus should be excluded.

  5. League A: Normal appointments
League B: Good game for Mariani, but not unexpected after his promotion.
More surprising is, that Maresca gets directly League B - as his first international match ever, if I am not wrong.
Normal appointments for the other two.
League C: UEFA often appoints experienced referees for Kosovo, however it seems to confirm, that Kralovec is quite far away from the top (and the EURO?) at the moment.
League D: UEFA listened to the complaints, that only 2nd group referees are appointed there ;)
Disappointing game for Lechner, I think. Probably a demotion is coming for him soon.
Apparently, UEFA prefers to apppoint Women Elite instead of Men 3rd group here. Although it remains to be seen, whether that will be a trend or not.

  6. Interesting management by Rosetti about Italian referees.
Mariani, after his promotion, starts with a very big game, if compared to his expectations, but before that, to the fact that until a few ago he was a Category 2. This is a game even for Elite, if you ask me. Indeed in the same group, we have some Elite choices.
Interesting to note that AR2 is NO FIFA, but without doubt Bindoni is the name that will replace Manganelli for 2021 on FIFA list.
Something similar can be said for Maresca, the game in Dublin is in my opinion for a classic experienced Category 1 referee, so this appointment is surely a great signal for him, as it is the first game as FIFA referee. Without Under 17, Under 19 or EL / CL preliminary rounds, that's for sure something very big as first step.
Regarding the rest, Veríssimo clearly under a full focus by committee and I like that, I think he can be a good referee at high level.
Stéphanie Frappart again appointed for Men Competitions, I think that the fact she never can handle Women's CL final is a factor for that.
So maybe for this reason, she is the only one appointed, and not other Women Elite. However, it is clear that committee sees her technically at a very, very high level.
Poor game for Kralovec, considering his ranking and I'm very curious about his future, for sure he must recover, but it is difficult to think he could be back at the top of Elite category.
Kulbakov with a game that can be potentially very hot.

    Replies
    1. Just a clarification: why do say that Stephanie will never handle Women CL final ?

      Delete
    2. Because since 2013, there is always a French team in final... and it seems this will not end soon :)

      Delete
    3. Frappart's AR2 is also not on the FIFA List. UEFA is starting to appoint non-FIFA match officials... the "UEFA Match Officials"... fitting for their new badge:)

      Delete
    4. @Marrkoo at least wait for his performance before writing about respect :)

      Delete
    5. A wonderful examination for situation of italian referees...... Regards

      Delete
    6. If a referee is promoted to First Category after only 6 international matches it is not fair for other referees who are promoted after 20 games. Some referees are indeed more talented than others, but still...

      Delete
  7. I'm a bit of a loss why UEFA sends their new referees from big nations immediately into action with some really big matches... and then they think "Lechner is the best choice for ANDFRO".

Královec's game might look disappointing, but considering his last qualifiers was MDAISL, it isn't that bad. Kosovo is an upcoming team facing a Greek side that was struggling, but is still a challenge.

  8. Really Bastien, IDK Why He is in elite XD

  9. Michael Oliver with a decent game and Frappart with a mens international. I know she has done men's club games but is this her first international men's game?

    1. Frappart did an U21 EURO qualifier in November 2019, I don't know whether you count that as "international men's game".

  12. Very poor matches for Kralovec and Lechner (especially the last one); I'm still surprised why League D cannot fits Cat 3 referees, probably Rosetti think that all matches, since they are few, are crucial ones to determine the rank and the promotion despite the name of the countries.
Great matches for Mariani and Maresca

  15. Interesting fact: no Spanish / Russian appointments so far in Nations League. About Russia, one should still mention Karasev, it seems as UEFA has a big forgotten him, but most important remark: maybe after what happened to Kazartsev and Eskov, Rosetti wants to understand what is happening there. I wouldn't blame him too much. Karasev at moment needs absolutely games. Let's see whether such appointments will appear for next games.

    1. Re: Spanish referees, CTA-RTEF organized a preseason stage in San Ildefonso (Segovia) starting on 2nd of September, so maybe they asked UEFA not to appoint any Spanish referee for this UNL MD.

At the end this stage got cancelled due to Covid but I guess that UEFA already made all appointments.

    2. When they organized this meeting they should have been aware of possible COVID problems, so why organizing it?

  19. The three penalty whistled by Peljto in MKD - ARM.

    36':
    https://streamable.com/4zbuzg

    90'+3:
    https://streamable.com/arx128

First penalty, not easy to spot if you ask me, very good call by Peljto. The second penalty is quite clear, but let me say that in such situations we see very often referees playing on because this kind of challenge (charging from behind) is not seen as classic or standard foul for a penalty. Hope you get what I mean. I absolutely agree with Peljto and I really like his choice there.
Third penalty, looks like Peljto didn't see properly / deeply the incident but had a kind of intuition of what had happened, otherwise he would have booked player. This is just my personal impression, I can be wrong, however penalty is absolutely correct, but YC is definitely missing. It is a clear DOGSO with a genuine attempt to play ball, so mandatory YC. I can't see a SPA in this case, wouldn't be enough, player was very close to goal and ready to shot. To be honest, one could even discuss about the fact whether it was a genuine attempt to play ball or not, but this is definitely an "upper" step. The missing YC, is the basic mistake there.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Great calls, I am glad that Peljto performed well.

I watched him recently in domestic league and I was a bit disappointed, but he is serious and concentrated in internatuonal matches, so with his talent he deserves to be in the 1st category.

    1. As i wrote right after this situation had happened: A clear no penalty to me. Distance too short and the arm is in a natural position by his body

      Delete
    2. This is quite a harsh decission to make in my view but I would not call it totally wrong.
If you look at the incident frame by frame it seems as the right elbow is a bit out from the body when the ball hits it.
So I prefer a play on decission, but I do not think it is a mistake to give the penalty due to the position of the elbow.
Me being Austrian, might guide me in my opinion though :)

      Delete
    3. An "Italian penalty" :)

Difficult to say for sure, maybe the elbow was a bit from the body but I would prefer play on in this kind of situations.

  25. Excellent start for Bastien with a correct penalty call after 2 minutes.

  26. In Switzerland-Germany in the 30. minute Süle was cautioned (delayed) for a SPA offense after Oliver played the advantage initially. I remember a situation like this was discussed before on the blog, but according to the (new) LOTG I think this caution is incorrect.

    1. Maybe he gave the card for a reckless foul (body check)?

      Delete
    2. Hmmm that could be, but in my opinion it was more of an accidental block than a reckless offense.

  27. Frappart poor when it comes to identifying reckless/SFP cases so far.

  28. Did Rüdiger escape a red card for violent conduct in 65th minute, using the elbow as a weapon? Oliver was close and seemed to look into the situation.

    1. For me still yellow

But few minutes later, missing yellow (reckless - 2nd leg) Embolo injured

    2. But even if not used as a weapon / with excessive force, it can easily be assessed as deliberately striking the opponent in the face while not challenging for the ball. I think he can feel very lucky.

  31. Kulbakov have missed PK for Serbia in the first half, and potentially PK for Turkey. Another missed PK in the second half for Serbia for holding Mitrovic.

Correct sending off (second YC) for Kolarov.

  32. I like Oliver's style, really good foul detection and positioning, and clear communication with players. This wasnt the most difficult game, but he did well.

Unlike him, I was surprised how many times Maresca was too close to the ball or in the way of passes as a game (Irl-Fin) was coming to an end. Small detail, but it shouldnt happen.

    1. Thanks for the clips, regarding the possible violent coduct (65') in Oliver game, I think one can't be 100% sure. I have the perception that German player opens the arm to make his presence felt by opponent, not with the direct intention to hit opponent. My opinion is that VAR shouldn't intervene in such situation, however, mandatory YC for sure.
The tackle in 69' is originally on the ball, I can understand Oliver point of view there, however replay shows that a YC would have been mandatory. Very dangerous action with trailing leg.
Correct penalty by Bastien in ESP - UKR but I think that he missed the another one in 78', indeed very clear intervention by player from Ukraine from behind. Would have been interesting to know in case of VAR presence, about a possible intervention there.

  35. Does anyone have feedback on Mariani’s performance in HUN-RUS?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Regarding Maresca, from what I saw, the game was very fair with only a few fouls (9 fouls at the end). Normal difficulty. An offside call in first half against Finland (31' or 32') without the line it is impossible to judge, apart from that three yellow cards issued: first one for reckless, absolutely correct, second for a reckless challenge as well from behind, but well given after advantage, and the third to a Finnish player (89') not shown by broadcast, I guess for time wasting or something like that. I didn't watch full game, however t looks nothing really challnging for referee.
For sure Mariani in Hungary - Russia had a by far more challenging game. I wait for your report, Marrkoo!

    1. WOW Felix Brych PAOK - Benfica. This appointment took a longer time than others to be ready, so I assume that committee didn't want to take any risk there. It is a very sonorous game. At the same time we can already be sure, having seen such Elite appointed for this turn, 100% all Elite referees in play offs as well.

    2. However, two appointments are still missing: Maccabi Tel Aviv - Dynamo Brest and Qarabag - Molde. The latter is not listed at all as game on uefa.com!
