  2. Great match for Hategan, last World cup final. Someone earlier mentioned Jorgji, for the second time match bellow expetations, I would expect more for second category referee with Europa league group stage experience. You could say it is due covid situation but this is his second low profile appointment (another is in EL qf).

    1. On the other hand, not all category 2 ref with experience in the Europa league have two matches: (NL or eU21) plus match EL qf
only Jorgii Glova and Kraushivi have that

  4. Does anyone know which referees have been promoted from Serie B to A please?

    1. Which nation ?

      Delete
    2. Do you mean Italy? In case, Sacchi and Fourneau but, as I explained on the blog earlier, these promotions are only on paper this time because starting from this new season, serie A and B referees will be again together in a unique panel.
      You can see it here:

    3. @Chefren I see Trentalange on the observer's list and I know previously he had some function within Ref organization (and you said usualy those with function are no on the observer list). Was he removed or what happened with him?

      Delete
    4. He has resigned as head of Technical department (this was his role until last season), Trefoloni has replaced him. It is reported that he could present himself as candidate for the next AIA elections against Nicchi. Meanwhile he has been added to the panel of serie A observers but in case he has different ideas he wont last too much in this role.

    6. Thanks for the information :)

    7. Also I thought Piero Giacomelli had retired but he is still listed?

      Delete
    8. He got a derogation along with Calvarese. However, AIA didn't want to be so clear about this choice, they didn't release any explanation. According to rules he had to retire, not for age limits but for having spent all possible seasons in serie A.

    9. That's good, I really like the onfield personality of Giacomelli plus he's always really kind to the mascots

  5. Important games for both romanians. I didn't expect such an important game for Kovacs. Let's hope for a good performance. Otherwise, I hope that France- Croatia will be the last test for Hategan before Supercup (as Chefren predicted) :)

  6. I don't understand why you mention Guida and Doveri as fourth officials, but not the other Italian FIFA referees appointed as fourth officials (Irrati, Valeri). Yes, all FIFA referees from Italy have been appointed but I think if we check carefully assignments we can find similar situations, please remember that UEFA is starting now after the long break due to Coronavirus, so it is normal that all referees get a game. Some of them, for example Maresca, didn't get any game since the nomination, 9 months ago. I respect your opinion but I see that you are not so much objective about that. This speech can be made also for other countries...

  7. Some things are already right that you say Marrkoo, but this is nothing new.
The only new thing is that it now also affects other Nations and no longer just the big 5 (England, Spain, Italy, Germany, France).
    For example:
Romania - since Vassaras started working there, things have suddenly improved and now they have two referees in the Elite and one in the First.

Slovenia - the great advantage for Slovenia is, that with Vlado Sajn they have a person with great experience, but what is more important is that he is a important person in UEFA refereeing.

Poland - they have since a few years a very good contact to UEFA refereeing and now they have one referee in the Elite and four referees in the First.

There would be several more examples, but I don't want to list them all now.
Summarized in my opinion there are the big 5 (+ Netherlands) and a few smaller ones (Slovenia, Romania, Poland) have a certain advantage.
That shouldn't be a criticism of the referees, because everyone who has made the step in the Elite has earned it, but compared to other referees (Ekberg, Mazeika, Gestranius, Bognar), it was a bit easier for them.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I do not think that Marrkoo or anyone else criticized the referees, but the fact that some have an easier way for promotion and more appointments than others, with similar skills and personality, which does not seem fair.

      Delete
    2. Okay, but he's from italy and already had the top clashes in serie a. Then he should be ready for a match like Hungary-Russia.

      Delete
    3. Mariani only needed 6 international matches before being appointed to Hungary - Russia. Kabakov, for example, is also a good referee, let's say similar to Mariani, but is from Bulgaria, not Italy... how many games he needed before getting similar Nations League appointments? Definitely more than 6! And there are many other examples...

      Delete
    4. Italy needs another Elite referee after Orsato, so, if needed, he will be promoted again after another 6 matches:)

      Delete
  8. Interested is that Elite referee are sent to the Sweden, Makkelie for Sweden-Portugal and Today Marciniak for Sweden- France

    ReplyDelete
  9. I guess you meant "same situation" not "shame situation"? :)

You are right: while all 10 Italians got appointed this week, not all German, English or Spanish refs are in action within the same time interval. The balance is clearly inclined toward Italy, which definitely has good referees, but Germany, England and Spain also have good referees.

  10. International debut as main referee for David Coote. Great!

    4. I disagree honestly. It looks really bad because he jumps in without control, but look at the other considerations. He tackles with a single leg. The foot that does make contact plays the ball first. The contact that is made after touching the ball is top of foot to shin, which isn’t really that bad. The knee is bent and doesn’t swing out to full extension.

Ultimately I think yellow is at least a supportable decision; in fact, I think for me it is the preferred (and very brave) decision. It *feels* like a red card, but in my opinion the considerations point strongly towards yellow.

  12. Very hot game for Peter Kjaersgaard in Georgia. Any report?

    1. I just checked the two KMIs. The penalty is clearly correct, but the RC is questionable. Two players made a sliding tackle towards the ball and crashed together with their legs. The player, who didn't get the ball was sent off for SFP (apparently on advice from AR1).

  15. Correct 2nd yellow card for Sweden by Makkelie

  16. Makkelie correctly sent off Swedish Svensson (43’) for a reckless tackle. Portugal scored the resulting free kick.

  17. Video from Armenia - Estonia.
For sure a missed RC for SFP by Coote. Incredible tackle by Armenian player.
    https://streamable.com/6qfful
A referee after this challenge must run and send off the player with the RC ready to be shown. This typical management by English referees to wait, have a consultation and then to issue a card is absolutely not suitable for such games. We already discussed about that in Kavanagh YL final. I repeat myself, English referees should be more convinced with red cards. This can be a real problem.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The player has to be sent off from the moment he goes airbourne. It is simply UNACCEPTABLE that neither Coote nor Constantine Hatzidakis saw this as the SFP it was.

      Delete
    2. Fully acceptable with a yellow card. The hitting point is on the foot and the ball. Not endagering the safety at all when he makes contact. The force is not really excessive at all when the contact is made. Much worse tackles have been made. This is 7-8 on the Uefa RAP I would assume.

    3. I agree with Anonymous... It's more YC!

  18. France-Croatia min. 68: why advantage? and who got the yellow card?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Waiting for advantage, because N'Zonzi (FRA) got the ball after the holding by Lovren (CRO). Then YC for N'Zonzi for recklessly running into an opponent. But free kick for France, because of the first foul.
      Looked OK to me.

      Delete
    2. Was an advantage really warranted in that situation at midfield? Just merely having the ball is not really an advantage. If eventually France got the free kick for the holding by Lovren, why no yellow card for holding? Another holding happened toward the end of the game, the referee applied again the advantage, but the French player lost the ball. The Croatian who committed the original holding was already sitting on a yellow card. These advantages, unfortunately, did not work well for Hategan today...

  19. Wrong penalty for France by Ovidiu Hategan. Much protest by the Croatians...

  21. I disagree with this penalty call by Hategan but I can't blame him too much. I think he had a different perception of the incident, for me touch was not punishable. Players from Croatia could have been sent off for their behavior after the decision.

  22. Quite challenging match for Lawrence Visser. Correct penalty given but the SYC for diving is much more difficult to assess.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No dive in my opinion - and no penalty either. Clean tackle by the defender and I think, the attacker goes down in an attempt to reach the ball - not to deceive the referee. Also no protests can be a sign that the player wasn't looking for the penalty.

  23. Just watched the Coote potential RC incident, crazy flying tackle, mandatory RC.

Crucial mistake, to make it worse later ARM6 scored the 2nd goal for his team :/

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Disagree. Reckless contact with the foot and the ball at the same time. No studs made contact either. The fact that he was flying like superman doesn't matter when the actual contact is just reckless.

      Delete
    2. I'll wait for the comments calling me arrogant / haughty / not respecting others' opinions etc., but comments like this really make me wonder "why do we bother".

And the worst thing is that UEFA might well agree with Anonymous.

      Delete
    3. It seems UEFA already agreed with Kavanagh's performance in the Youth League final, so they might this time as well. Just joking:)

      Delete
    4. Well, if you pause a second before the foul, it looks like a jail sentence offence, but the actual touch and foul doesnt seem brutal really. RC is never a mistake, but the YC could in a way also be supported (touched the ball, contact low and not an open foot) .

      Delete
    5. I somehow understand both positions here.
On the one hand, the way he comes/flies into the tackling is very dangerous and players should be discouraged to do that. Therefore a RC would be reasonable here.
On the other hand, the tackling itself (restricted to the contact with the ball and with the opponent's leg) doesn't seem that dangerous anymore (hitting point, no studs, most of the force on the ball) If he had reached that outcome with another technique, it would quite clearly be only reckless, I think.

      Delete
    6. I prefer a yellow card for the reasons everyone has mentioned above. He is certainly out of control, but the challenge itself has many, many qualities of a yellow card. The only consideration pointing towards red is that he jumped into it, but in my opinion the challenge winds up “only” reckless in spite of that fact. Hits the ball first, makes contact top of foot to shin with a bent leg, and the other leg stays uninvolved.

      Delete
    7. Both cards are supportable.

      Delete
  24. Excellent performance by Makkelie!

    ReplyDelete
  25. No reason to be infuriated here!

I believe that comment after your first "Ill wait for the comments..." were explained and that argumentation makes some sense even if they are not correct in the final assesment, so not disrespectful in any way.

If you insist that it is the most brutal tackle ever, I have in mind some that are much worse, but that would hardly change your stance on this matter, right? Also I think there is a fine margin between referee ways of thinking (what if I was there) and observers' way (lets see it few times and analyze), so you should understand that we dont discuss here what he should do IF that tackle happen in the game, but we comment post festum after we saw the foul and disciplinary action. I agree with your intuitive view, but thats not enough to call something a clear mistake, at least IMO.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Still about ARM-EST potential RC by Coote: I must admit the first couple of times I saw it I said "Wtf, David, why yellow???" and I'm still convinced a RC is the best choice: to me it's still a crucial mistake.

However I can support some of the comments above: the tackling itself is really not as dangerous as the jump can make spectators think of (bent leg, no studs, ball first).
Moreover we need to point out the mental awareness of the referee, on his international debut, from a country with a specific reffing trademark (no doubt for me a Latin ref would have easily sent ARM#6 off), no "VAR parachute" and after 10 minutes only in the game.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Scottish observer assesses this challenge as reckless at the end after carefully reviewing it.

I repeat, crucial mistake to me, but I wouldn't kill the ref for this: I don't know how he handled the rest of the game and whether the acceptance of his decisions was good or not.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I understand your point Forlan.

Maybe not the most brutal, but I rarely saw such a crazy and flying tackle in a UEFA game.

'Of course' I know why Coote gave a yellow card, for the reasons that have been mentioned. If anyone is interested for my 'observer' analysis as you put it, it's below.

The question we should ask is - should we accept the reasoning for issuing a yellow card there? If you ask me, clearly not! Just because one can find reasons for a yellow card, it does need mean we should defend them at any cost.

An 'average' blogger can find the reasons for a decision being taken and decide them to be justified, an 'analytical' blogger can sort through them and decide whether they are justified or not.

I guess it comes down to whether you accept or want to challenge the current trends, but I would argue - we really went wrong in refereeing if you can make such a flying tackle as that and not be ejected (Estonia player was substituted injured!!). As a blog we should do better in my opinion than accepting almost all of what UEFA and FIFA do and only arguing through their ideological lens, as it seems many commenters nowadays do.

    1. There are two kinds of Red Cards for foul play (VC/SFP):

      1) dangerousness
      2) ridiculousness / threat to control

If you ask me ARMEST 11' is a Red Card on BOTH those levels (look at the contact BEFORE the Armenia player plays the ball), but on a practical level it falls into the second batch given how flying the tackle was.

In the second case, if you are into that sort of thing, if you delay the giving of the sanction you MIGHT be able to 'get away' with only issuing a caution (by the way it's no accident for that reason that English refereeing 'takes its time'). If you want to see this done par excellence, watch this clip from Zwayer:

      https://streamable.com/fm73p

Coote's very English management is perfect if you want to avoid a Red Card, but refereeing is not about avoiding clear Red Cards if you ask me.

    1. Sorry I cant agree with that... the second yellow was such a decisive mistake by Visser. Overall the performance wasn’t good, no clear line in card management and foul detection... In grey situations always againt LUX... maybe he was unfortunate with that, but the second yellow for LUX was the peak of this very questionable performance. The penalty was for me correct.
