  1. With every appointment more and more indications that Stieler will become elite in December. Only question is if someone will be demoted (I think it would not be correct towards Aytekin to demote him while he is injured) or we will have four elite Germans. On the other hand it would not be first time we have four elite from same country - if I remember for certain period of time Italy had four elite referees...

    1. Yes, big signals that Stieler will get Elite category on December. To add to your analysis, let's not forget that Brych will retire after EURO, so in the worst case, there will be 4 Elite referees only for 6 months. However, it is also possible that Aytekin will be demoted, but it is very rare from UEFA, even more for referees from "major" federations. We will see.
In any case, it is also true that the bad form of Zwayer in recent times was another reason for which committee focused on Stieler.

      Delete
    2. In my opinion this would be also very unfair towards Aytekin given his performances in Bundesliga. While I know UEFA usually cares little about domestic performances, he has definitely outperformed Zwayer for several years now and was voted best referee of the season this year.

      Delete
    3. Just a correction this year was Marco Fritz and another correction was the best season of Zwayer in 2019/20...

      Delete
    4. I agree that the bad form shown this season by Zwayer is concerning not only for the present, but especially for the World Cup 2022, where he is currently the only German referee pre-selected. If Brych will not continue another year (only 1 year!) after 2021, they need to find a strong candidate and Zwayer might be replaced with Stieler.

      Delete
    5. Technically, after EURO Brych should continu two years, not only one, to attend WC 2022, because the tournament will be played on November / December 2022 (2022-2023 season).

      Delete
    6. Regarding domestic age limit, Brych can continue until the end of the 22/23 season.
Internationally the sensible options for retirement are
      Summer 2021 (after EURO)
      Winter 2021
      Winter 2022 (after World Cup)
I am not aware of any statement on this by Brych or DFB.

      Delete
    7. @Chefren: I am sure you know that FIFA nominations are for each calendar year, from January 1 to December 31. In order for him to be available for WC2022, he would only need one more year on the FIFA List after 2021, which would from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2022.

@Philipp S: traditionally, German referees were removed from the FIFA List on 31 December of the year when they turned 45. If Brych was re-nominated for 2021, it will be the first time (if I recall correctly) when a German referee on the FIFA list will be older than 45.
If DFB now allows referees to stay on the FIFA List until the age of 47, why is Zwayer (and not Brych) the only German referee on the pre-selected list for WC2022?

      Delete
    8. Not only German referees, but all referees were removed at the age of 45 until a few years ago.
So yes, Brych should be the first case in Germany in modern times (Alfred Birlem was 50 during WC1938 and there were several examples above 45 until 1990)
Brych is not on the pre-selected list, because his plan was to retire after EURO2020. But that might have changed with the new situation - or not. We don't know at the moment.
The same question could also be asked for Cakir, Skomina and Mateu. If there is no FIFA age limit anymore, why are they not on the pre-list for 2022?

      Delete
    9. The age limit was abolished by FIFA starting on 1 January 2016. While other countries nominated referees older than 45, Germany still did not allow any referee older than 45 on their FIFA List for the last 5 years (2016-2020).
I do not know details about the age limits in Croatia or Turkey, but there are still national FAs who would allow their referees to continue nationally over 45, but would not nominate them for the FIFA List if older than 45.
Spain is a completely different case: not a single Spanish referee repeated a World Cup appearance in the last 40 years: Mateu Lahoz 2018, Velasco Carballo 2014, Undiano Mallenco 2010, Medina Cantalejo 2006, Lopez Nieto 2002, Garcia Aranda 1998, Diaz Vega 1994, Soriano Aladren 1990, Sanchez Arminio 1986, Lamo Castillo 1982, etc. For this reason, Spain has a different name (Del Cerro) on the list for WC2022.

  2. Nice to see Monzul in the appointments. This is really a positive change by Rosetti.

    ReplyDelete
  3. I think the answer to Frappart and Monzul appointments in men competitions is the fact that they officiate in the respective major leagues (Ligue 1, Ukrainian Premier League), so in case of other women to come, they could get the same chance.
For sure a revolution by Rosetti, it was very difficult to think that a few years ago.

    1. That's right Chefren.

Not the same case with Staubli (Sui) officiating in Division 2, probably the reason why she's not already appointed for such games.

      Delete
    2. So Adamova should also be available.
      Anyone else?

      Delete
    3. What about Kulcsar, how is her situation in Hungary?

      Delete
    4. Do not forget that Staubli already refereed a men's match at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2019.

  4. Is Latvia - Faroe Islands an important game? I didn't expect Dabanovic in League D!!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes if Faroe win they win the group but if they draw or loose the group will be open.

      Delete
    2. Also both matches in group C ar decisive for promotion and demotion, so good to see that the committee does not underestimate these games, appointing first category referees to both of them.

      Delete
    3. Hm, but Faroe Islands could even lose that match, and have the first place still in their hands. So I don't think, the game is specifially important and I am a bit surprised about a First group referee.

  5. A big match for Hategan. He seems to have committees trust again.

Also if the rumour about Collum's marks is correct, I didn't expect his name on the appointments.

    1. The games we were discussing were a missed red card for dogso at Russia v Serbia. Wrong penalty at Liege and a wrong red card for sfp in Prague.

We will never know what marks are issued but these are clear mistakes in my opinion. Even if the marks are not 7.9 it identifies a referee not in the best form, highlighted in last weeks cup semi final where he also had two wrong penalties and looked short of confidence. I should say that I hope this game goes well and he can show the skills that could see him attend the Euros next summer. It’s also noticeable that his two regular assistants return.

  6. I wasn't surprised that Gestranius was appointed to Cyprus. Finnish referees have been appointed this season only the matches played in Lithuania (4 matches), Norway (3 matches), Cyprus (2nd match), Croatia (2), Northern Ireland (1), Ireland (1), Switzerland (1), Faroe Islands (1) and Estonia (1). COVID situation and restrictions play a role...

Allegedly, Alireza Faghani has been removed from Iranian FIFA referees for 2021 but it seems the affairs are not over yet

  8. I can understand their thinking. Would the German FA retain a FIFA ref now operating in say Turkey? Would the English FA retain a referee working in another part of the world? No.
And how can he be "helping" and "influencing" Iranian referees by plying his trade in Australia? Surely that says, train in Iran, go to WC, then earn (good) money somewhere else.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Indeed one can fully understand the reasons of Iranian football federation, but still Faghani is an excellence and they should do something to solve this problem. It is a very difficult situation.

  12. Red card issued by Monzul in SMRGIB in 49'
SMR6 hit this opponent with a high foot near the stomach, supportable call IMO, VAR wouldnt have intervened if there was one.

    1. Supportable call? It's a clear red card

  13. Monzul RC in San Marino - Gibraltar:
    https://streamable.com/a2pk1f
To be honest, that's a mandatory red card, VAR should have intervened, in case. I disagree if you say only "supportable".

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. IMO it's a clear RC.
The development in the direction of not giving a RC that fast isn't fundamentally bad, but such dangerous attacks, which have the risk of deliberatly hurting the opponent, are completely RC.

      Delete
    2. I agree with Flip - you can agree with the current trends or not, but in some situations there should remain little room for contention. Clear RC.

      Delete
    3. When I had originally only seen the slow-mo replay I said yellow was supportable; after viewing it in full speed, I think not.

      Delete
  14. RC for SFP by Monzul in 49' is correct, but it always annoys me when a referee delays the showing for 15-20 seconds because he/she has the need of isolating the player before. I watched her in Juventus-Barcelona Women's Champions League this season and what happened before finally showing a DOGSO RC to a Barcelona player looked like a comedy sketch for me.

Maybe it's a 'mentality' thing xD, couldn't imagine a Spanish referee like Sánchez Martínez doing that, not even Del Cerro Grande.

    1. *Juventus-Barcelona WCL last season, not this season.

    2. I very much agree with you! In fact that seems to be her general way of handing out cards, an automatism instead of only using this approach when it would be appropriate (in cases there can be a question as to who receives the caution).
Apart from that it appeared a bit chaotic and nervous today, and acceptance was not too good. Quite a lot of disputes/mobbing.

  16. In 33th minute a correct RC in Cyprus-Luxembourg for a DOGSO holding in the box. Gestranius seemed to have had relevant input from his AR here. Good team work.

    1. Well indeed as Gestranius' very first gesture after CYP2 fall was saying 'nothing, nothing' with this arms. AR1 input definitely changed decision.

  21. 79´ : very harsh YC for Kanté by Stieler. Perhaps, excessive force but not even a foul IMO. Supportable call perhaps because of lack of control by French player but nothing very clear...

    1. Balanced approach, good flow, decisions accepted by players, knowing when to intervene and when to let go. No wonder why he used to be appointed to many editions of the top clash Bayern - Borussia. Now it is time for Stieler to move up internationally. Good luck, Tobias!

    1. Two correct penalties in favour of Spain: first one for handball, second one for DOGSO-tackle (second YC correctly given). YC in 58' was given only upon advice of one of the team members. Some bad behaviours like interfering with quick free kick execution by kicking the ball away managed in a (too?) calm manner in the first half. Good onside by AR1 prior to equaliser! All in all, a good, expected level performance!

      Delete
    2. Are you sure that it wasnt offside?

      Delete
    3. The ball was indicating an offside line and the Spanish player was not offside imo. Impossible to be 100% sure without virtual offside lines but I think optimal decision was made by AR1!

  25. Happy to see him on that level! The only problem he showed several times is the following: In some games when his friendly, calm approach was not rewarded by the players and he had to struggle to keep or win back control he overreacted in an extremely aggressive way, showing cards as a merciless warrior and eving losing his line of foul detection which is normally a very goodone. If he learns to control himself in critical moments he will have a great career.

Following a corner kick, touch by open arm after a deflection on a teammate who was very close. Ball was absolutely unexpected, this decision could be supportable given the origin of the ball, however I'm not sure Hategan had the exact perception of what had happened.
There are arguments for both calling penalty (mere position of the arm) and playing on (very unexpected change of direction).

    4. I can be mistaken, but where in the LOTG the criterium of ‘unexpected’ can be found. According to the rules the only important criterium to check here is the position of the arm (natural versus unnatural) as far as I know.

  27. A solid performance by Gestranius in Cyprus. Very hectic first half with 5 yellow cards, all correct (first one after 30 seconds). Penalty late in the first half for the home team, dogso and red card (not trying to play th ball, holding) correct decission. I think he got some help from the assistant here. In second half everything calmed down, only one yellow card for Cyprus for kicking the ball away after the whistle. Seemed like the work in the first half payed off in the second.

  28. It is now or never for Stieler, since, at 39, he is not that young anymore. Between him and Zwayer, I would prefer to see Stieler becoming No 1 after Brych's retirement.
