  1. Stieler got Portugal-France and Zwayer Luxemburg-Azerbaijan. I don't think this is sign Zwayer will be demoted, but it is clear that Stieler, although first category, is ahead of Zwayer at the moment.

  2. So it seems as good news are expected for Ekberg as well, with Spain - Germany and Batta to observe him. After many years of focus by committee, he has probably convinced and he is ready to make the big step to Elite. I must say, if compared to other referees, the development of Ekberg was very, very long. At least 3 or 4 years, when Eriksson was still active, or even more. He got many and many finals of youth tournaments as well.
On another note, maybe last international game for Meckarovski (1975), with Vlaho new FIFA referee for North Macedonia from 2021?

    1. Maybe also a farewell game for Eitan Shmuelevitz (1978) after his demotion to Third?

      Delete
    2. I just wanted to type: farewell match for Dimitar Meckarovski who has been an international for 12 years. He often went with Stavrev, in the time that Stavrev was a Elite Development referee.
Stavrev still seems to be used for the more sonorous matches in UEL, but (almost) never beyond groupstage. Nice gesture by UEFA!

    3. Surprising appointment for Shmuelevitz. He is the first Third Group referee used in this NL season.
A debut for Frid would seem more logical.

      Delete
    4. Frid has under 21 game.
Shmuelevitz Third Category but with experience as 2nd group referee. In case of retirement, it is indeed a nice gesture by UEFA.

  3. first step for vasilis fotias as 4th official new uefa list referee.very educated and talented new referee.

  4. In case of convincing performance by Ekberg, I guess that he could be promoted in December.

I'm really curious about December category movements because there are so many candidates for promotion (Ekberg, Jovanovic, Stieler, Treimanis..)

Shmuelevitz and Meckarovski's games look like farewell games.

  5. Hey Chefren, thanks for your wonderful blog again ! Ref observer in Switzerland is from Slovakia 🇸🇰 not Ukraine ! :)

  6. I think that Ekberg is ready for the big step towards the Elite Group. I watched him for the first time on the 2015 U19 FT (he was UEFA 2nd at that time). It was quite obvious that he would make Elite one day.

That same summer Sidiropoulos was promoted to the Elite Group. But after 6 years he is still not trusted by the committee for difficult matches. Another referee who started very promising but got lost in the way.

  7. Zwayer in Lux-Aze?!

Very bad, even humiliating appointment, which doesnt make any sense to me. Due to Aytekin problems and not so bad performances, surely Zwayer wont be demoted, so why dont give a chance to some prospective 2nd cat or 1st?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Agree. I don't understand why whistles Zwayer in Luxembourg ? This game is normal and easy.

      Delete
    2. On the other hand, when I think better, it is possible that Zwayer is last minute replacement for someone. This even have morr sense considering Mike Riley is observer there - there is no logic to appoint elite referee to this match with such important observer. It is possible that someone promissing from cat2 was appointed (which make sense considering Riley is observer) but replaced by Zwayer for some reason.

  8. I still read Culum and Hallberg on uefa.com.

  9. Switzerland - Ukraine
    Referee: Anastasios Sidiropoulos (GRE)
Assistant Referee 1: Polychronis Kostaras (GRE)
Assistant Referee 2: Lazaros Dimitriadis (GRE)
    Fourth Official: Vassilis Fotias (GRE)
UEFA Referee Observer: Marián Ružbarský (UKR)
    UEFA Delegate: Claude Runavot (FRA)

Marián Ružbarský is not from Ukraine... He is from Slovakia...

  10. Swizerland - Ukraine is cancelled because the swiss authorities have quarantined Ukraine.

  11. FIFA VAR light concept

    https://www.fifa.com/who-we-are/news/var-light-concept-taking-shape

    ReplyDelete
  12. FYI, it's Ekberg-Culum-Hallberg in Seville. No replacement.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Georgi Vadachkoria having a horrendous match in Romania - Denmark u21. First a wrong penalty for Denmark for a foul outside the box, and now an absurd red card for Denmark for what was clearly not a DOGSO

    ReplyDelete
  14. 5' Possible missed PK by Ekberg, FK just behind the line decided.

For me it looked more in than out.

    ReplyDelete
  15. VAR would have been helpful for first foul in Germany-Spain match. Why no VAR in Nations League?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Outside the box, surely no touch. But I didn't still understand whether in the box there was a touch or not... free kick in any case wrong decision by Ekberg, I think.

    ReplyDelete
  17. big call early on for Ekberg felt it was poor decision due to lack of contact but also if there was contact for me its on the line of the penalty area therefore PK should have been given

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am pretty sure, there was contact at the foot inside the penalty area. Whether the small contact is enough for a penalty can be debated - I would say, it is.

  18. Disallowed Spain 2-0, still not clear watching replay.
    Impossible to say without VAR.

    ReplyDelete

    1. looked like offside to me.

      Delete
    2. Watching replay, the leg of defender challenging the attacker who was passing the ball, could have kept onside the player.
      Rather ONSIDE in my opinion.

      Delete
    3. oh, will have to rewatch in later. in german TV only one replay was shown and there it looked like offside. but surely hard to detect.

Disallowed Spain was onside. Clear crucial mistake by AR1.

      Delete
  19. I think wrong offside by AR1 in ESP-GER.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Wrong decision by AR in ESPvGER should be 2-0 ESP. Another decision that would have benefited with VAR

    ReplyDelete
  21. Seemed rather impossible to call that offside correctly, with four players almost all in the same line. Tennis has gone to digital with technology helping to tell if a ball is in or out, so football should, too, with sensors built into the players' uniforms that would really tell us if a player is offside or not.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Let's keep football human, played by men and women, reffed by men and women and not by technology. The only modification to offside law might be to add light room bewteen attackers and defenders is required to be offside. In doubt advantage to attackers is the philosophy. We, most of all, believed VAR should be solution...we see it is not...Let's keep human touch to referee the game...Even if i understand big stakes at high level.

      Delete
  22. Both situations very difficult to judge without VAR. I think one can't blame too much the Swedish officials.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Still, Ekberg was standing on the line and he even pointed that out to Ramos. So I think it is expected he should have got the inside / outside call correct.

      Delete
  23. Neuer was upset, but why don't Germans put men on the posts like so many teams do? Very strange...

    ReplyDelete
  24. 45 ‘ : PK missed by Kulbakov for Sweden. Clear foul by both hands by Varane. Very lenient style. Too many decisions even little fouls in d’avoir of French team. Swedish players seemed angry at halftime. Crucial mistake by Belarus ref, not very impressed by him at all...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's an unfair action of French defender, I agree, but we have to consider that Swedish attacker created this contact by falling on the defender's hands. I would support the non-penalty call!

      Delete
    2. Welcome to Kulbakov :)

      Delete
    3. Disagree about contact creation : clear movement by French defender to stop swedish attacker run. Even French commentator said was « a clear penalty »...

      Delete
    4. I agree with anonymous 21:36. No penalty supportable decision for me as well. Too little to consider it a mandatory penalty, the Swedish player seems to exaggerate the intensity of the contact somewhat.

      Delete
  25. HT in Seville, full control by Ekberg's team but a (probably) missed FK (contact seemed to be on the line) and a wrong crucial offside by AR1.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Clear handball before Portugal's second goal missed by Oliver.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. VAR would intervene there for sure...

      Delete
    2. Indeed a clear handball in the build up to the POR goal, which should have been called off.

      Delete
    3. Absolutely, clear and crucial mistake, although it was probably very hard to see from Oliver's angle. Maybe AR could have spotted it...

      Delete
    4. Yes, I expected at least AR will intervene there but unfortunately did not happened. Now another clear hadball by Ronaldo missed by Oliver. Looks like Oliver is having problems in detection of handballs tonight....

      Delete
    5. The Ronaldo handball is not an offence. Ball hit the arm after being deliberately played by the foot. And the arm was in a natural position. The goal is a handball offence only because it created a goal scoring oppurtunity, otherwise not.

      Delete
    6. The reason why the goal was a handball offence doesn’t matter in the context of Referee 12’s point, fact is that it was a handball and it was not detected.

      Delete
    7. All in all very good management, very good foul detection, very good disciplinary control by Oliver...
In all segments very good performance by Oliver with one crucial mistake that unfortunately affected the final result. And he whistled the end 15 second before additional time ended.

      Delete
    8. Big mistake by Oliver. Definitely not Elite material.

      Delete
    9. Crucial mistake by Oliver, not first, not last. Your statement Anonymus is IMO wrong. Oliver is probably one of the most talented referees today and with only 35 has huge experience in UEFA and Premier League both. I like Oliver, reminds me little on Clattenburg. In the future definitely he will be top elite referee...

      Delete
  27. Correct 2nd YC issued by Oliver in CRO-POR after reckless challenge (51’)

    ReplyDelete
  28. After the two mentioned situations in first half, definitely easy game for Ekberg, not so much stuff for important observation.
I think he had very convincing body language when he said to Spanish players that foul had occurred outside, but he was wrong... nothing more than that in this game.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Possible penalty in Kulbakov game:
    Live: https://streamja.com/3nwlq
    Replay: https://streamja.com/pAVNj
I think penalty could have been whistled but maybe not a 100% clear situation due to attacker behavior.

    1. I would say, clear enough for a 7.9, but not clear enough for a VAR intervention. :)

  30. Turkish Fifa Referees for 2021 announced:
    Cuneyt Cakir
    Halil Umut Meler
    Ali Palabiyik
    Halis Ozkahya
    Arda Kardesler
    Yasar Kemal Ugurlu
    Abdulkadir Bitigen.

Huseyin Gocek & Mete Kalkavan (both Cat 2) are out. Gocek is out because of age, but we don't know why Kalkavan is out.He is still 41. New Referees Ugurlu is 39 & Bitigen is 37 years old. I can't find any explanation to new FIFA referees.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks for the news. It is very interesting to underline that Mete Kalkavan was VAR of Cakir in some of the controversial games he had this season. Maybe TFF was not so much satisfied with his work behind the monitor. The new FIFA are not so young, so it is not exclusively age's question.

      Delete
    2. An information. Denis Bitnel is still refereeing?

      Delete
    3. I remember back in 2015 that Kalkavan was appointed at the U17 FT but never appeared due to a failed fitness test. He was just promoted to 2nd Group and seemed to have a good future. But for some reason, he stayed in 2nd Group for 5 years.

Since the reason cannot be age, could it be his performances on the Turkish league?

      Delete
    4. I like Uğurlu (never watched a full game of Bitigen tbh :D) but indeed it's a bit surprising to see new UEFA referees from 1981 and 1983...

      Delete
    5. @Ref Paul - Deniz Ateş Bitnel, after having terrible game in Turkish League he never got appointed, demoted from Super League. Then he quitted refereeing.
Mete Kalkavan, imo, is an average referee but better than Halis Ozkahya in terms of refereeing. I don't know if he can continue as VAR?

    2. Spares Dias officiated first leg of ZEN-LAZ. Skomina is injured and I don’t think that Siebert and Bastien will get another appointment this matchday. I expect also some recovery time for Schaefer who had 1 UCL and 2 UEL Matches in three weeks plus a UNL game
