  1. I did not think Orsato will get this match again, but deserved appointment. Tomorrow maybe Cakir and Makkelie or Kuipers and Cakir?

    1. Undisputed Orsato’s Solid performance!!! He always had the match under his own control. He just missed a “single whistle”, scilicet the foul on the keeper at min.81, and honestly, I also didn’t like the injury-time management.
Anyway, it’s really sickening to read some comment of those who criticize Orsato only with the aim of discrediting him. It’s freaky unbelievable.
Orsato is having what he’s deserving!!! His performances are excellent so far and the evidence is there, for all to see.
The only yesterday’s real mistake was AR Preti’s offside signal. Such a mistake at these levels is unacceptable!!! What I’d expect now is that, in next Orsato’s matches, Preti would be replaced by someone else.

  2. Expected appointment for Turpin.
Less expected that Orsato repeats his final, but I don't see a problem there.
Surprising to have 2nd group referees as 4th official in both games, when there are higher ranked alternatives (e.g. Bastien & Massa) from both countries.

  3. For me there were better options for PSG-Bayern than Orsato (Makkelie/Kuipers or even Taylor/Oliver. That match requieres the top 2 refs from UEFA and lets just say Orsato is not in that league for my taste. Top 4 for me atm are Mateu, Brych and the 2 Dutchies. But no surprise given that Rosetti favours his compatriots over and over. :) Lets see if he will do better or the same as Mateu, or if he shows why Mateu should have had the final last season

    1. Your comment makes no sense. The referees you mentioned will likely obtain appointments for semi-finals, which are more prestigious than a quarter final. Mateu refereed this match in the first leg. Brych, if you know, is German. About Oliver, no comment. The two Dutchies will likely obtain appointments for semi-finals, which are most prestigious than a quarter final. If Rosetti had appointed Makkelie for this match and Orsato for the SF, then you would have said Orsato was favoured by Rosetti for obtaining a SF instead of a QF. So, either side you look at it, there's an excuse to say Orsato is being favoured. Apart from that, Orsato's appointment for PSG-BAY is fully deserved, although I would have obviously preferred to see him in a different match. For sure his performance in the final was perfect, but any controversial episode next Tuesday might resonate more if Orsato is in charge of this clash again.

Now I also see in some other media that they claim Maresca may have misunderstood Ibrahimovic. Do you think that it's PR bait or there is a concensus that noone else heard anything inappropriate, just a regular calm disagreement?

    1. Still not clear, I prefer to wait for the reason of the ban that should be known on Tuesday. TYhere are many videos reporting the full discussion between Maresca and Ibrahimovic but most of them are only speculations. Last sentence by Ibrahimovic seems to be: "Sembra strano eh?" (It seems strange, isn't it?) and some people are reporting that this was a misunderstanding with "Sei Bastardo" (an insult in Italian).
But we really can't say anything. However, in case of wrong perception by Maresca an appeal by Milan could follow with the annullment of ban. We will know more soon.

      Delete
    2. We will never know how things really went, however the sports judge punished Ibrahimovic with a one-round disqualification and a 5,000 € fine for having addressed, with a provocative attitude, a disrespectful criticism to the referee. Since it's only 1 match of disqualification, there is no appeal. The appeal is foreseen only for at least 2 round of disqualification (however, when appeal is made, the TV images are not evaluated since only what is written in the referee's report counts). We'll await the appointments on Thursday to see if Maresca will be appointed in a Serie A match or, as more likely, in Serie B!

  6. French and Spanish referees not liked by Rosetti! Turpin gets less important matches than before, Bastien totally out of favour. Mateu Lahoz didn't get a final he deserved last year. Rosetti loves Italians (Orsato, Guida, Massa, Mariani) and Germans (Brych, Stieler, Siebert, Osmers; not deserved four elite referees).

    1. Can we please stop with patriotic French comments? Having subjective / patriotic comments about referee decisions is bad enough, let's not extend it to appointsments. He can't have the Bayern game, he can't have the City game (since the winner will play against the only French team left) and he had Liverpool last round: it's the only logical appointment. Stop with the patriotism.

    2. Agreed, he gives the best games to Orsato who isn’t even top 5 referees in Europe!

      Delete
    3. I don't understand these comments. Rosetti is dealing with a squad of referees of a qualitatively lower level than that of years ago. And he's trying to do his best imho. I have never seen him favor compatriots referees but rely exclusively on meritocracy.

  10. Differently from first leg, committee appoints a big Elite for Chelsea - Porto. Maybe this will be the last game for Turpin before a possible EL final this season...

    2. No, CL semifinal before EL final is highly unlikely, if not impossible. A decisive controversial decision in the semi will immediately make the EL final appointment impossible. That’ll be too big a risk for committee.

  11. 4) Inter – Cagliari, Mr Luca Pairetto was in charge. Pairetto is one of the referees who was able to work on himself during this year and his performances were so much better. Today he had no controversial situation apart of a delayed whistle (about 5 sec) for a foul who saw FO. The situation was not so good to see, but definitely the performance was very good, expected level. He has worked on his personality and the relationship with players. Both yc shown were without doubt correctly assessed. 8,30 for Mr. Pairetto.

    5) Juventus – Genoa, Marco Di Bello (FIFA 2nd). Marco Di Bello is the referee who had more “top clashes” this season (and he is n.1 candidate for Napoli-Inter, in next matchday) and appearently this was an appointment not expected: Rizzoli had to review his appointments after Juventus-Napoli (appointments usually are out at 12pm, this time they were out at 4pm) and Di Bello (who had also first leg) was chosen. No problem for him in match conduction: all went good. The only situation where we can discuss is Genoa's goal: before it there is a contact in the box against De Ligt but the push is too soft, in my opinion. Good call by AR2 Alessio Tolfo, allowing 3-1. Mark: 8,40

    6) Sampdoria – Napoli, led by Paolo Valeri (FIFA 2nd class, his 200th match in carreer in Serie A -congratulations!!- ). Paolo Valeri is a referee who helps Rizzoli very much: is the classical experienced referee who can referee every match. Controversial incident: Possible 1-1 by Sampdoria. There is a corner kick, the cross goes in the box and Thorsby, probably after a push, scores while Napoli's goalkeeper is in contact with Keita (Sampdoria's attacker). Goal is awarded. VAR Gianluca Aureliano (Serie B referee) calls Valeri to OFR and goal is deleted: for me VAR made a mistake calling the referee to an OFR: there is not a clear and obvious mistake. There is an easy push and an easy contact. Paolo Valeri, anyway, had no problems in all the match, but I would have prefered that he had confirmed his decision after OFR. 8,30 for Paolo Valeri because for me there wasn't any missed key incident by him.

    7) Hellas Verona - Lazio, mr Daniele Chiffi. The Paduan referee is doing much better in each single game. Today's match was so much important for Lazio that has to gain points to try to arrive in Champions League Zone. At the VAR there is Orsato. The controversial situation happened at the beginning of 2nd half, when Caicedo (LAZ) scores a goal after giving a nudge to an opponent player. Orsato calls Chiffi to an OFR and goal is annulled and YC is issued. In Italy there is 50% who thinks OFR was correct and 50% who thinks Orsato was wrong to call Chiffi to an OFR. IMO it was a correct call because it was evident and the immediacy is clear. Chiffi could have seen it from the field: 7,80 (8,30) in UEFA marking scale for him.

    Good evening to everyone!

    1. 1) He probably gets the ball, but also a lot of opponent, therefore free kick is supportable and then surely SPA (at least)
      2) High speed, uncontrolled, two legs off the ground, contact above the feet are arguments pointing towards SFP
      3) Replay ends too early, therefore not clear, whether a handball followed. If yes, I would say, it's even DOGSO. The action visible in the replay is no offence.
      4) Correct penalty
      Conclusion: Not that bad IMO.

      Delete
    2. All decisions are supportive, especially the second one, IMO 100% RC.

      Delete
    3. IMO
      1) Supportable decision. The defender plays the ball, but also clearly hits the attacker's feet.
      2) At least supportable. The ball is present and the attack ball-oriented, but the tackle also seems uncontrolled with two legs off the ground.
      3) Based on the pictures shown, it's a wrong decision - no offence.
      4) Correct call, taking into consideration the arm's clear movement towards the ball.

Doesn't look like a bad performance, regarding the big calls.

      Delete
  13. Both expected appointments. I have no problem with Orsato doing PSG-Bayern again, better than Taylor for example who seems to have PSG every second matchday.

I think Cakir takes Real Madrid-Liverpool and Kuipers gets BVB-Man City. Distant possibility as well that Kuipers is being saved for the SF and perhaps del Cerro Grande takes that QF instead.

Makkelie, IMO, is done in the CL this season. Supposedly Rosetti was not happy with the way he apologized to Portugal after the WCQ incident. EL is definitely possible, but that's it.

    1. Despite the WCQ incident, IMO Makkelie will be in CL semi-final. I also think Hategan is done in the CL (or even EL) this season because of his terrible performance in CL QF

    1. IMO

9' - Clear offside, good use of VAR.

27' - A bit more difficult for me. I think, one can support the referee, when he whistles that penalty, because the contact with the defender's knee is unambiguously present. However, he also seems to exaggerate the importance of that contact - not mandatory to whistle for me.

59' - Not only one possible offence. The handball, the dangerous play,...
He could have spotted it without VAR, but the decision is correct in the end.

    2. Agree with Flip for all his comments

And Ivan Bebek, I miss him as I have not watched his game for a very very long time. Last time I watched him perhaps was in 12/13 or 13/14 CL group stage. It is difficult to see his appointment (even in EL) in recent years

  15. 1)clear offside, that should have been flagged on the field already
    --> correct intervention

    2) no simulation but clear contact with leg by defender
    --> correct intervention

    3) hand above shoulder, dangerous play, gk with ballcontrol, offside line of vision no9, choose one :-)
    --> correct intervention

all three situations can be solved without VAR IMO and this should be the expected level one wants to see from a experienced FIFA ref, right?

    1. Maybe Bebek wanted to help Greek referees get back in charge :)

Unfortunately, clear mistakes, not the best day in the office for the whole team.

      Delete
    2. I wouldn't say "clear contact with leg by defender", Flip above explained my point of view as well, the attitude of attacker seems to get an easy penalty. A decision you can support. I'm not 100% sure about VAR intervention but of course I can understand why most of people think that simulation is 100% wrong and I can accept their point of view.

    3. On field maybe not the best evening for Bebek but at the end after VAR interventions, final decisions were correct and that is the most important thing.

  16. Eredivisie: Fortuna Sittard - FC Emmen
scheidsrechter: Joey Kooij / VAR: Rob Dieperink

A young Dutch referee who has often caused many discussions, Kooij, has returned to Eredivisie for the first time in 14 months after a long withdrawal due to a corona infection and injury. I respect his efforts, but the stage after a long absence did not sound as desirable for many again. He whistled too often in competitive games, overstressing both teams and neutral fans.

The most controversial decision is this triple punishment. Is this really DOGSO?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOuchGHgp8k&t=348s
I'm a little wondering if he was in control of the ball. Maybe he would have had the time and space to control the ball without contact. However, there was another opponent in the immediate vicinity, and maybe the keeper was in time.

It can be judged as 'denying goal-scoring opportunity', but I felt that there was considerable doubt as to whether it was 'denying obvious goal-scoring opportunity'. KNVB refereechief Dick van Egmond admits that this is a controversial situation with some referees who can do it with a yellow card.

It sometimes seems strange to me that a player shouldn't be punished with a red card unless 'denying obvious goal-scoring opportunity', but the DOGSO decision itself is acceptable as not a mistake even in controversial situations.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. IMO, when assessing this incident, one should start with the foul itself. There is a little grap, so the decision seems supportable. Nevertheless, I think that the attacker exaggerates the contact, when he realizes that he maybe cannot reach the ball anymore.

Moreover, I strongly doubt the DOGSO call. He is in no control of the ball.
Due to that, I prefer a YC.
But, again, I think that one can support the referee.

    3. They call themself 'Team-Makkelie', as soon as a member of this team has to make a difficult decision (from the corner flag), and is wrong, then the team lead (Makkelie) should take responsibility. How can you give someone who fails to do this the responsibility for big games in big competitions, highly doubtfull.

    4. @Folks86 & superstar010 I completely agree with you guys. Following your point, in fact, I do not feel very comfortable to see the name"team-referee", like team-Makkelie. I used to follow Makkelie on social media, where he always called his team "team-Makkelie". He left me an impression that he thought he is the most important person in his team. Then I do not follow him anymore on social media because I feel weird whenever he called the team in this way. Maybe I am too sensitive, but this is my feeling. Everyone in the team (referee,AR,VAR,AVAR,4) has equal responsibility on every decision they make. Although he is a very good referee in my mind, I strongly disagree with him on this decision.

    3. Mmm I'm not 100% sure that was a mistake... the replay was not aligned properly to judge... but suicide call from Mr. Preti, I really don't know why he did it, maybe he was very sure and was impulsive. Last match he was appointed for was in Serie B, where they don't have VAR, so probably he did not delay because of that, but hard to find a reason

  29. Solid first half by Orsato. Point for improvement is teamwork and communication with AR2:
    - Wrong corner given by Orsato, overturned by AR2
    - Wrong offside decision by AR2 (delayed whistle vs. early and wrong flag)
    - Correct offside by AR2, missed advantage for Munich in 45' (AR2 has already signaled advantage, Orsato decided to whistle although Bayern could start a promising attack)

    1. Yes. However, it was clearly no penalty and they could have let the game flow. I know, it is kind of 'tactics' to delay the game but a check could also have occurred later, especially if the incident is so clear.

      Delete
  30. It's not a huge problem, but I feel a more lenient referee would be better for the match in Paris. There were some instances were Orsato rather disturbed the game than helped it with his actions (the mentioned GK/CK situation, missed advantage, some foul decisions, where play on would have been accepted).
Match control is obviously quite good with his authorative style, but IMO not really a challenge in this match - at least until now, with the tight result this could change soon...

  31. Gentelmans, as maybe some of you remembered, I m one of the blog followers that think that Makellie Is great referee who is no1 candidate for Cl final this year if real is out. But, if we want to be real, the end of cooperation is logic. You make fatal mistake, you are out. Thats all, no emotions, fotball needs corect decisions, of course that does not mean that Diks is bad. No, but we need to be professionals and we need best decisions.

    1. Professionals support their colleagues. What about thousands of correct decisions that Diks made in many years with Makkelie?
This season Diks was degraded from AR1 from AR2 in Makkelie's team. I think that there is something internal between them, so obviously Makkelie was just waiting for Mario's mistake to dump him. Maybe I am wrong, demand me if you think different. I was one of Makkelie fans before, I am not happy but I need to change my opinion.
Mr Mario Diks you have very big support from me!

    4. How about the fatal mistake he did a few months ago when a player aimed and shot the ball at him but he gave a handshake with the player instead of a straight red card? He should have been out too with your logic.

      Delete
    5. I'm wondering if there is a connection between this and Rosetti's instructions to referees to not apologize to coaches after matches. As in by Makkelie talking to the Portugese coach after the game he swings all the heat onto his Ar2 and so it gives more of an opportunity for Diks to be removed.

It does raise questions around Makkelie's team management. Remember he also swapped Kamphuis and Blom around in the VAR booth. I wouldn't want to accuse him of being toxic or anything, and he is a great referee, but these actions do raise flags around perhaps the culture in his team.

  42. Okayish performance by Orsato. Not an easy game, no mistakes that influence the score, match control. But at the same time there were too many smaller mistakes and some 'inconveniences'. The performance was not flawless. In my view there should have been added one more minute in extra time.

  43. I find it difficult to assess Orsato's performance. Full in control, important decisions correct. But his fout management was not excellent; some phantom fouls (situation Navas as good example). Moreover weird extra time management; at least a minute extra should be added. AR1 excellent, AR2 with a big mistake.

All in all, I don't think it is enough for a CL semifinal, maybe EL but I prefer others there.

    1. 1 extra minute for time wasting at 89' was added to the 3 minutes, so that it became 4 total minutes of extra time. Then, Orsato stopped the game for about 10-20 seconds when Navas got injured. IMHO The time management is correct. Only two mistakes in the whole performance: AR2 Preti in the 1st half and Navas-Paredes clash phantom foul in the second half. He invented that foul but it was impossible to see it as he was covered by Mueller despite being close

  46. Quiet night for Turpin and Orsato. Easy match in Sevilla, harder fought in Paris, but without controversial episodes or crucial mistakes. Huge whistle at 81', but nothing else to report: bad news for the various anti-Orsato/anti-Rosetti fan clubs that swarm this site.

    1. Exactly, no controversies, 100% experience and 100% respect by the players, Orsato was definitely "inside" the game. Two main flaws (1 in the first half by AR2 and 1 in the second half by the ref) although I'm not sure the offside call by AR2 was actually wrong. Very solid, although not perfect, performance. And great human management of the players continuously communicating with everyone.

    2. Thank you for your comment, Petr! Finally someone who is neutral and watched the game. Orsato's management was excellent today! In such a game, with such players like Neymar, there was no controversy apart from that bad early flag by AR2. Penalty area decisions correctly taken, all cards given correct, no missed cards. And constant and effective communication with players what was well audible. Experience, firmness and cool head today by Italian.

  50. Tonight I watched Orsato's game with friends, so not 100% concentrated, but I agree with what Petr said. At least the polemicised nature of many comments don't chime with what I saw, anyway.

Unfortunately I found it rather sad reading our blog today - my deep thanks to those just interested in discussing, being reasonable, presenting their views, Law 5 blog is so much better for you, please stay!

However, I saw too many agendas behind comments today, people who seem more interested 'controlling the narrative' (and yes, BOTH sides of each argument) on a blog that they calculate is widely read by important people, than discussing their views as enthusiasts like we all are.

I suppose that's a big compliment for 'us', but I'm hard pressed to feel like that reading some of the comments today. But I repeat again - thank you to all the people only interested in discussing the issues at hand (and I'm including a much wider net of comments in that statement than it might seem).

Great observation. I dont claim I am special nor better than anyone else, but today the amount of completely irrelevant discussion is terrifying. I mean, I dont get why someone, who is btw not regular or involved daily on the blog, would start commenting 1 offside or long whistles?! I am always happy to discuss wrong or debatable calls, but this type of "I like this referee/ This referee doesnt deserve his appointments" is nonsense.

    2. I couldn't agree more with you Mikaeal and thanks for having written this comment. That's my point of view as well, what I find terrible is that many readers, especially anonymous, write without the real passion for refereeing, but just to have focus on referee, with the intent of discrediting and nothing more.
However, the level of other comments is what I expect to read from this blog and I'm really happy that there are people so competent and refereeing's "lovers". Basically we can't delete most of comments because this is seen as censorship, and I must agree, freedom of speech is untouchable but this shouldn't become an excuse to use the blog for personal reasons.
I just hope to read in future more pure refereeing-based comments, I know it's difficult, but possible.
Thank to all who understand that, we as administrators can't control everything, but we try to give the best to keep the blog always open and first of all a place of discussion.

  52. Only words on the final penalty situation in Turpin's game? All I know is the commentators on Sky Sports thought it was a missed penalty - but that doesn't count for much. Did anyone else see it?

  53. Orsato IMO less than average, but not as bad as some here suggest. He just whistled too much, destroyed the flow of the game that way, and made forechecking especially very hard that way. And some really funny, but minor mistakes.

  55. Slightly OT (but we could consider it somewhat OT since there have been many discussions around it): Dutch KNVB released a bit more info regarding Makkelie and Diks. Source: https://www.nu.nl/voetbal/6127438/makkelie-vervangt-assistent-diks-na-controverse-om-afgekeurde-goal-ronaldo.html

Translation: it was Danny's decision to replace Diks, but this decision has not come easy. We read statements that this replacement is solely due to the SRB-POR incident, and while that may have been the last straw that breaks the camel's back (in other words, the final push towards this decision), it is surely not the root cause of it. Diks will stay active as AR, also international, but not with Danny.

    1. Thanks. Poor human management skills for Makkelie and extremely unfair for Diks. I feel very sorry for Diks. Although Makkelie is a good referee, I will never become a fan of him because of his decision.

  56. I have been reading this blog for a couple of years so far, but I have never made a comment and this is my first time. Actually, I believe some users ruined the purpose of this blog yesterday, which should be debating about refereeing and it is so sad to read those comments, especially those by Anonymous users (just like me now :)
In my view, Orsato showed to be a top-level referee yesterday, although there are two or three clear mistakes that do not influence of course the final score. The big mistake is for sure the alleged wrong offside call against Mbappe by AR2, but Orsato was very clever to (partly) make up for it by delaying the whistle a few seconds until Mbappe stopped and impacted on the game. Of course, it can be debated whether Mbappe would score a goal if AR2 raised the flag later. A second mistake, although a minor one, is a phantom foul for defender at 81', but my feeling is that Müller completely blocked Orsato's view and the ref could only guess the foul without seeing it.
Apart from these little mistakes, I would like to focus on how managed the match. Every single user, even those who commented with the only aim of discrediting, acknowledged he was in full control. Thanks to his experience, he read the game very well and he was fully recognised on the pitch since the very beginning. He seemed to communicate a lot with both the players and the coaches, and he gained trust by everyone on the pitch for the entire match. About foul detection, he set clear boundaries and gave only 4 clear and timely YCs. He also gave many advantages to let the game flow where it was possible. He denied one to give a timely YC to Dagba in the 1st half and send a strong message to everyone on the pitch. Instead of showing cards for minor dissent, he used regular verbal communication with the players, especially those who are 'harder' to control like DiMaria. He managed the game in a way that he WAS the referee on the pitch and everyone trusted him; even when he whistled the phantom foul at 81' (the only wrong foul in 90 minutes), the decision was perfectly accepted by the players and there were little protests.
The result? No protests, no simulation, no 'hard' fouls, respect between the players, respect towards the referee, 100% accepted and no controversies. Also thanks to his refereeing, a hard-fought knockout match has turned into the most spectacular game of the year, and you all enjoyed it because it was 100% football and 'fair' play.
Guys, we're not talking about missed penalties or goals. Despite the few small mistakes, I think we are in front of a great performance. You may be perfect in detecting fouls and penalties, but when the best football players in the world fully respect you and recognise you as their leader in such a match, it means you are one of them.

    1. I didn't watch the game live and so didn't want to make a comment until I had watched it, which I have just done.

Firstly what a fantastic game of intense football! But also I think your comment best represents what actually happened on the field. Orsato had the total respect of the players, so that when minor mistakes were made their was no fuss from the players and the game continued as normal. For me this was a good performance from which we can see his class as a man manager and his understanding of football as a whole.

Thank you also for making a fair comment of what happened, and not putting up with the anti-Orsato campaign further up. I really appreciate this well written, and accurate analysis!

    2. Like I wrote a few days ago, the blog is living in extremes. Thanks for the fair view. But I share some of the users' feedback:

Did Orsato show an accepted performance being in total control? Yes.
Was the decision-taking correct and accurate? Yes, with one or two exceptions.
Does UEFA refereeing appear in the newspaper today? Yes it does. Bayern complaint about falling for soft contacts. But can Rosetti sleep well after such a performance? Yes he can.
Did Orsato achieve that by motivated and dedicated match management? Yes and no, he benefitted from his senior acceptance level, the players accept and respect him mostly. But he did show commitment to go risks and assess tackles with more concentration and depth? No, not really. Many soft and easy free kicks were given. Made his life easy, but did not make such a top game enjoyable.

All in all, Orsato did do UEFA and himself a favor yesterday. Did the entertainment factor benefit? No, I don't think so. Is it a major problem? No, Bayern had enough chances to score. Is this what I think should be "the art of refereeing"? No, for me not. But maybe that's not needed if you want to have calm nights as UEFA committee ahead a European championship.

    4. Undisputed Orsato’s Solid performance!!! He always had the match under his own control. He just missed a “single whistle”, scilicet the foul on the keeper at min.81, and honestly, I also didn’t like the injury-time management.
Anyway, it’s really sickening to read some comment of those who criticize Orsato only with the aim of discrediting him . It’s freaky unbelievable.
Orsato is having what he’s deserving!!! His performances are excellent so far and the evidence is there, for all to see.
The only yesterday’s real mistake was AR Preti’s offside signal. Such a mistake at these levels is unacceptable!!! What I’d expect now is that, in next Orsato’s matches, Preti would be replaced by someone else
