Six women’s match officials have been appointed for the first time in World Cup history
Today, the FIFA Referees Committee announced the lists with the names of the selected match officials for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. 36 referees, 69 assistant referees and 24 video match officials (VMOs) have been chosen in close cooperation with the six confederations, based on their quality and the performances delivered at FIFA tournaments as well as at other international and domestic competitions in recent years.
“As always, the criteria we have used is ‘quality first’ and the selected match officials represent the highest level of refereeing worldwide,” said the chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, Pierluigi Collina. “The 2018 World Cup was very successful, partly because of the high standard of refereeing, and we will do our best to be even better in a few months in Qatar.”
The “Road to Qatar 2022” project started already in 2019, with more than 50 trios considered possible candidates and going through intensive preparation. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, this preparation was anything, but easy, as in-presence activities were suspended for a long period.
“The pandemic affected our activities, in particular in 2020 and at the beginning of 2021. Luckily, the World Cup was still quite far, and we had enough time to provide the candidates with good preparation. We are announcing these selections well in advance as we want to work even harder with all those who have been appointed for the FIFA World Cup, monitoring them in the next months. The message is clear: don’t rest on your laurels, keep working hard and prepare yourselves very seriously for the World Cup,” said Collina.
Massimo Busacca, FIFA’s Director of Refereeing, ensures the match officials will receive all the necessary support by FIFA, as their preparation is paramount.
“Thanks to an innovative tracking and support programme, all the match officials can be supervised by FIFA referees’ instructors even more closely and intensively than in previous years. This is a very important factor, from which we expect considerable improvements and progress in view of the FIFA World Cup 2022,” explained Busacca. “In addition to that, there will be tailor-made individual programmes, in particular concerning health and fitness. Each match official will be carefully monitored in the next months with a final assessment on technical, physical and medical aspects to be made shortly before the World Cup, in order to have them in the best conditions when the ball starts rolling in Qatar.”
The selected match officials will participate in early summer in several seminars (Asunción, Madrid and Doha), reviewing and analysing video clips of real match situations, and taking part in practical training sessions with players, which will be filmed to enable participants to receive instant feedback from the instructors.
“The key focuses of the preparation remain protecting players and the image of the game, consistency, uniformity, reading the game from a technical and tactical perspective and understanding a variety of player and team mentalities,” added Busacca. “We can’t eliminate all mistakes, but we will do everything we can to reduce them.”
The VAR system was implemented for the first time ever at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ and four years later, a team of 24 video match officials (VMOs) will operate in Qatar, ready to provide their team-mates on the pitch with technological support, if needed. Due to the very limited number of FIFA member associations having implemented the VAR system at the time, VMOs for Russia 2018 were mainly selected from Europe and South America. Today, the VAR system is used in all major competitions worldwide and VMOs from Asia, Africa, as well as Central and North America will also participate in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.
For the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup, the FIFA Referees Committee has also appointed three women's referees and three women's assistant referees.
“We are very happy that with Stéphanie Frappart from France, Salima Mukansanga from Rwanda and Yoshimi Yamashita from Japan, as well as assistant referees Neuza Back from Brazil, Karen Díaz Medina from Mexico and Kathryn Nesbitt from the USA, we have been able to call up female match officials for the first time in the history of a FIFA World Cup. This concludes a long process that began several years ago with the deployment of female referees at FIFA men’s junior and senior tournaments. In this way, we clearly emphasise that it is quality that counts for us and not gender. I would hope that in the future, the selection of elite women’s match officials for important men’s competitions will be perceived as something normal and no longer as sensational. They deserve to be at the FIFA World Cup™ because they constantly perform at a really high level, and that’s the important factor for us,” concluded the chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee Pierluigi Collina.

DeleteIndeed, Collina/FIFA distinguished themselves there. Excellent. Tessema's absense surprises me greatly. Especially for TUNMLI's Sikazwe(!). One hot afternoon doesn't make you a bad referee though, FIFA showed courage there for sure. Gassma would have been an appropriate sub for the Ethiopian. Very brave, and correct, to turn away Satō; Ma Ning represents East Asia. Two Englishmen, two Argentinians - good, all four deserved it IMO. Less so the Brazilian duo, but they were definitely neck-and-neck, and Seneme carried them over the line. The women as we could expect, I think they chose the best available too. Barton, S. Martínez, Escobar, Ortega (deserved) and Matonte (well...) carry two ARs. No Cunha in ANY role, Seneme's grudge keeps him out. Marrufo too doesn't go, as Shukralla - he is better than all three Middle Easterns there, but we could easily expect this though. Soares Dias - his run was too late after ultimately weak EURO. Schärer and Jovanović would have been very exaggerated for 2022, so I agree with their non-selection; they have much time. And, finally: sorry for Ovidiu Alin Hațegan; you have my deepest wishes in all regards.

DeleteFrom and English POV: Taylor was guaranteed. Happy for Oliver, but quite surprising IMO - I guess he won the 'shootout' with names such as DCG and Jovanovic (possibly others too). Not a shock that no English VAR will attend
ReplyDeleteTrust me it was Never surprising, Colinna had made it clear he wanted Oliver and hence Rossetti had to up his game and get with appointing him. As for Attwell he never fully recovered from his early on mistakes and was eventually replaced by Kavanagh who was never on the list.

IMO both Taylor and Oliver completely deserve their callups anyway, and perhaps also it was easier to appoint 2 English refs this time as there were none in 2018 (as Chefren mentions below). As for VAR, the truth is none of them deserve it so absolutely correct not to appoint.

DeleteMy bet is, one of the German VARs is going to work with Taylor or Oliver. There are two German VARs and only one German ref (Siebert). Germans also speak very well English. Same language family. Dutch VAR also an option.
DeleteYeah, honestly Villarreal is not a good VAR anyway. He's there with an eye toward 2026. Penso's omission (once you concede Marrufo wasn't going) is the big surprise from my perspective. Penso is an excellent VAR.

because of the Turkish Referee Committee, Cakir is out of the tournament. He had a chance to break a record(3 EURO and 3 WC) but they took it from him. What a shame for the whole country.

Also sad for Hategan as he missed the world cup because of his sickness. I am positively surprised with appointments of women referees. England had two spots out of 10. That is an important achievement.
ReplyDeleteFirst comment must be made absolutely about Spanish choice wih Mateu Lahoz. It is the triumph of meritocracy, if you ask me. I wouldn't have bet on him, I was very sure they would have called Del Cerro, despite of his performances. A particular news for Spanish people as well, since it was reported this had never happened and they were sure about Del Cerro. Then, the second big issue: Oliver and Taylor. Absolutely right to call both, it can look like compensation after 2018 without English referees, but both deserved this call without doubts. The rest, to follow...

I did think this. 64 games spread over 36 refs is tight. You would hope each ref is given at least 1 match given they have been called up, but I'm not sure it's guaranteed, especially if they want to give 3 appointments to the refs of the SF/F.

Thus Time For Asia, all confedrations got the honor to handle WC Final except Asia and OFC.

Yes. My feeling is that this COULD be Faghani's big chance to enter as candidate no.1 for the final. Never an Asian in the final (in an Asian WC too; Bujsaim came close in the Far East) vs. political trouble of Iran which denied him in 2018, in a Middle East WC too.
DeletePerhaps a bigger problem though could be performance. Faghani was very average at Arab Cup, surviving basically on natural authority and experience only. For sure, this was not the same excellent referee as in 2018.
Maybe he just had a 'moment' in Russia though - Confed Cup 2017, Asian Cup 2019, an AFC U23 (if I recall rightly): these were not excelling performances by the Iranian.
So more than politics, I fear form could trip him up. Actually, I believe that FIFA threw away the best in Shukralla, but this was always expected. Beath is good; Al-Jassim and Mohammed A. H. rather just average IMO. A shame for the Bahrani official, he deserved it.
Finally: Ma's selection over Satō is actually stunning! And well done - the Japanese never deserved it with his always passive, poor showings. I like the Chinese ref, but feel he is quite destroyed by the guidelines in AFC. Maybe he could equal Lu's two games in KOR-JPN if the refs are given more of a free hand than usual (or in UEFA atm).
Actually If we looked at the Final appointments (last two Finals), Rizzoli and Pitana weren't the best performer's at the tournament. So maybe It's time for some Justice. And Iranian referees were represented in WC Final At "USA" when FANAEI Mohammad was the assistant referee. I become sick from that word "politics", this is Football and it is a gmae for fun not for taking revenge from people.

DeleteMohammed is quite average for me. But his case is very interesting indeed. Despite his relative lack of skills IMO - communication average, unable to go deep in foul recognition - he has built up a great PROFILE as a very competent referee. Most importantly for a 'third world' official, he gives a very secure in his games and not being overawed on the top stage. He'd get found out in a tough game, I'm sure of it, but picturing him reffing even a R16 game isn't that difficult for me either. Mohammed is no Bujsaim though, that is for sure.
Ma Ning is a very able referee in my opinion. Despite a weak Asian Cup, he caught my attention with good performances in other games in 2019, and I 'kept an eye' on him ever since. His delivering of the tough Iraq vs. UAE game in March, according to the AFC guidelines which 'tied both hands behind his back' was pretty impressive. His style is (much) better than, say, Mohammed's. BUT - with very few exceptions, you can always rely on OFC/AFC/CAF referees' technical accuracy to decrease in a World Cup finals.
Mohammed Abdullah Hassan is quite well prepared against this: a) technical accuracy is not his strength anyway; b) he always looks assured and competent, and surely feels that himself. Ma, however, much less so. He did mess up Qatar vs. Lebanon in 2019 on a mgmt level (there was a controversial disallowed goal too), and I fear, that the Chinese ref would repeat the trick if he got the chance to referee at WC 2022 (a chance he deserves!).
So that is a long way of saying, yes I do think Ma Ning is ahead of others in AFC like Mohammed, but no, I would expect stronger performances from the Emirates official than him in the World Cup.
Hussain: Fanaei's story is remarkable. Did you know that Blatter had to personally intervene in order to get him a VISA to enter the United States? Otherwise, FIFA would probably have flown in a replacement linesman from North Korea. Fanaei was going to be marooned at Frankfurt airport (connecting flight from Tehran), but he stumbled across Bouzo, Bujsaim and co. in the departure lounge, and his tournament was saved.
DeleteHe was also very lucky having gotten there. Really, FIFA should have rejected him for completely guessing a disallowed goal in Switzerland vs. Romania having been in a ridiculous position, but fortunately for him Casarin and the reffing operation determined the call was correct, and just ticked him off about his positioning. His performances were okay after that.
Fanaei's appearance in the final was also a bit fortunate - there was a very big chance that it would be him and Al-Ghattan (BHR) at Puhl's side, but in the end that got blocked, and FIFA wanted a confederationally balanced trio, so Venancio Zárate (PAR) was parachuted in instead. A tight race then between Fanaei and Al-Ghattan for AFC's place, but the Bahrani's controversial (and brilliant!) onside in Netherlands vs. Brazil and Blatter's 'Nobel Peace Prize' sixth sense probably decided it. Puhl treated his linesmen like sh*t in the final, but Fanaei fared decently I think.
The politics is different nowadays. Whereas appointing an Iranian for a US final was quite the coup in 1994 (FIFA -> world peace, football without politics, etc), the scene is much changed. It is said to be the (American) SPONSORS who were most keen to block Faghani in 2018; they couldn't bare it to be an Iranian official in the final. We will see how it plays out in Qatar.
For my money, I still think Faghani was clearly the best referee in 2018! I'm annoyed he didn't get the final.
DeleteI always said tha Janny Sikazwe was going to go to the final irrespective of what happened to him at Afcon, he even has the CAF Confederation final this Friday in Nigeria. Some times what the outside see isn’t what committee uses to judge referees.

The Truth is that Tessema has had some underwhelming performances in Africa of late and as well FIFA opted against he was at logger head with Salima(imagine) that is as a support referee because that’s the role most Female referees selected will play except for probably giving just 1 match to create the history and headline to a female center referee. Back to tessema, FIFA feels he doesn’t have the physique of a top referee???

ReplyDeleteSomeone mentioned it in one of the previous posts that he would be a great choice for that sensitive final - either a British clash or Wales-Ukraine - and I agree because, like Makkelie, he is not the grumpy or authoritive ref, but someone who interacts a lot with players. Human approach / people oriented.

Zwayer's performances were very "mixed", and he had problems with his communication on the field too often. So Siebert was the only clear choice, but I still feel sorry for Aytekin, who came back with his old good level after being injured, but never got trust by UEFA after the UCL-PSG-"scandal".

ReplyDeleteThe three UEFA referees who were already at 2018 WC are Turpin, Marciniak and Mateu. One should add Orsato and Makkelie, but they worked in a different role (VAR), Looking at the full list of UEFA referees, there has been indeed a quite radical change. Then, some recent events also contributed to that, with Karasev and Cakir forced to be out.

A representations of referees in this WC seems be less experienced than representations in 2018. Favourite no. 1 for final is Faghani. It is a huge chance for him, especially that WC will be in Qatar. Other candidates are less experienced, often debutants at WC level.
In all of this I feel so so bad for Hategan!!! He was finally getting the recognition he so so needed after a so long time under the shadow, then falls sick. I feel so bad for him. And one thing about referring is that once it comes it may never come again.

ReplyDeleteFor some time now Tobar has been absent of major appointments in Libertadores and Sudamericana Cups. Not a surprise for us. Watch for Matonte and, especially, Valenzuela. Both are rising stars with huge appointments as of late.

Delete1st of all a general comment to say that 36 referees are really too much and I really wish that most of them will be appointed only as 4th official otherwise it would be very expensive and a non-sense to call one official just for officiating only 1 match. It's a total waste. The fact that in the official FIFA list there isn't the distinction between main referee and 4th official brings me to guess that name like as Ma Ning, Frappart, Tello, Mukansanga, Yamashita and Ortega will act only as reserve. Starting from Uefa, I can say that expect Frappart all the other names were expected; personally i think that something more would have deserved Soares Dias, Jovanovic and especially Del Cerro Grande; the last one didn't receive the same fare treatment like for the second english (Oliver ?). We discussed a lot how much tight was the race between the spanish candidates, but since two officials from Argentina and England has been selected I don't understand why no two from Spain. Del Cerro would have deserved a call at least as VAR; this solution would have been, to me, the perfect compromise.

On AFC I think that the choice of Ma Ning in spite of Shukrallah is the real political one, much more than the famous battle Turpin/Makkelie for the CL final. Shukrallah and partially Sato are to me the missing names for AFC.
Following what happened in the latest year during the CAF tournaments honestly I don't think that 5 referees deserve to be at WC. Ndiaye was responsible of a terrible mistake during the qualification, I didn't expect him neither as reserve or VAR. The missing names is Tessema but probably as you wrote is correct
Fully expected the names form CONCACAF; to me the lowest ranked is Ramos, respect the other 4, but it's quite impossible to rule out Mexico. Marrufo is the missing name especially as VAR, where he has a strong experience.
Personally the highest disagreement I have is on selection form COMNEBOL; from meritocracy two officials from Brasil is totally undeserved, while I really don;t understand how Leodan Gonzalez and Tobar have been excluded; I supposed them as the highest level with Rapallini and Valanzuela
In any case Busacca and Collina know better than me who could succeed at WC so best congratulation to the selected referees and good luck. Last but not least though to Hategan; I really wish him to quickly recover and take the satisfactions he deserve
For the AFC it is clear that the geographical allocation does not allow Arabs to get more than 3 representatives (Faghani, Mohamed Mohamed, and Al Jassim), there may be political influence between the UAE and Bahrain (Mohamed Mohamed vs Shukralla) but for me they are neck to neck so whoever is chosen It should be fair enough, while for Ma Ning his opponent is only Sato, I think it's more dominated by quality reasons because from the beginning Sato was never convincing and it was clear that in 2018 the one who got the match was Mohamed Mohamed (1 match) while Sato as far as I remember 0. Somehow I'm pretty sure of Conger's quality after seeing him in the Arab Cup, I'm sure he will get the game.

ReplyDeleteMy call is at least one game with a full female referee team Frappart+Nesbitt-Medina+Yamashita/Mukansanga. Regarding how much of a humanitarian crisis the Qatar WC is, FIFA desperately needs some positve PR in the west and making a statement towards gender equality by appointing four highly competent ladies is an easy point to score.

If you take note of the UEFA refs, it's obvious that Collina 'dictates the law'.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great moment for Romania and I am really happy. After 36 years we will have again a main referee at a World Cup (we had Nicolae Grigorescu as assistant referee in 1998).
ReplyDeleteIstvan Kovacs is the perfect example that you need some things in order to suceed in your life:
- a little bit of luck (very probable, Istvan would have not been here without Hategan's medical problems)
- to deliver good performances when you get a (small) chance (and Istvan delivered very good performances in last 2 months).
As a romanian I say: "Congratulations, Istvan Kovacs !"
If you look at the lists, the 3 women referees, including Frappart, do not have their assistants, which indicates they will act as fourth officials. For the first time, FIFA did not separate the support officials in order to hide that female officials were called only as support.
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed very likely that women are planned only as fourth officials, but we will see, I think they could give a game at least to one between them. Regarding UEFA, I wouldn't find other names planned only as fourth official, but more generally if this separation is abolished, there can be only positive effects. Many things can happen even during the competition and you can't never know... better to announce all as main referees.

ReplyDeleteTessema and Gassama's performance has greatly decreased compared to the previous few years, you could say they have actually passed their golden age, just look at their performance at AFCON 2021, in this case Gassama in my opinion is like golden child of CAF (he made it to Qatar because of his big name, while Tessema is not enough, even when Gassama involved in controversy CAF always defended him, look at his case in AFCON and CAF FIFA WC qualifiers). CAF doesn't have many option (for me AFC much better than CAF to produce great referees).

DeleteNo. As I've said elsewhere and have always maintained, I am all for female referees who earn their places in men's leagues or competitions. Many have. Frappart has earned her sport in Ligue 1, for example. But this? No, it's just a PR stunt. That's clear. By no standard--objective or subjective--have they earned a spot.
Most people here agree that 36 referees are borderline too many for 64 games, so you can't just assume that someone else would have been called if the three ladies didn't made the cut.

Non-experts might be easily fooled by Collina's (frankly) lie here, that "we clearly emphasise that it is quality that counts for us and not gender," but to those of us who follow this matter closely, it is obvious that they have been selected for this role purely because of their gender. None of the female referees have resumes even close to comparable with the men on that list, and the accolades they do have were themselves largely given to these referees on the basis of gender without anywhere near the normal prerequisite experience or merit. I don't see how anyone can honestly analyze this situation any differently once they look at the facts.
DeleteIt really is a very big shame to me that this is the path FIFA chose to take. Assignments should always be made on merit; when a female referee ascends the same ladder as men and makes it to the World Cup, I will applaud. But this artificial pathway is not the same accomplishment, and certainly not a sign of greater equal treatment between the genders. The opposite in fact: as you said, Anonymous, 3 quality male officials may have lost a spot at the World Cup because FIFA wants to play the PR game and give the female referees easier requirements. Very sad IMO.
As others have said above, I suspect we will mostly see the female referees as 4th officials / reserve assistant referees. I think there is a chance that we see some ARs get the call in a more normal fashion as well (for example, if Parker or Atkins go down, Nesbitt stepping into Elfath's team would be warranted, deserved, and normal). But I also think there's a chance we see a female referee get a whistle in a throwaway game. And the media will surely praise FIFA for how progressive they are, gender equality and all that, when really the truth is exactly the opposite: that they are only there *because* they have been given preferential treatment on the basis of their gender.

Siebert, who cannot manage the extremely stressful matches, goes to the world cup, Vincic, the villager of Ceferinin, whose name is involved in scandals and an average referee, goes to the world cup. But Cakir can't go, is this justice?
Imho, Oliver is in Top 3 referees in UEFA, better than Taylor. He already whistled hundreds of games in Premier League (best league in the world). In euocups he didn't get what he deserves only because he is from England (every year we have a lot of teams from England in SF and F)
DeleteI don' think there is an English lobby, otherwise 4 years ago it wouldn't have worked properly! This time to me both referees will go in a fully deserved manner. Maybe you remember only the games in which Oliver did some mistakes, but in recent time he definitely showed to be ready for that. About the rest, maybe it is important to underline that how you are describing some referees is just because you see them in that way. Very harsh statements, and I disagree. Vincic had a great path and he justified his promotion to Elite. What I can say is that today he looks to be a bit different in terms of style, having selected a certain approach for his games. When he was in contention for promotion to Elite, he did absolutely well, and I liked him many times. Also, and that's my final argument, you shouldn't strictly relate the absence of Cakir with the call of other referees, committee would have allowed him to join in all cases, but the difficult situation didn't allow them to take such decision. In other words, the Turkish was very strong, if you have somebody to blame, that's surely people inside federation and not referees who are about to attend WC!

I didn't watch the English league matches. But I didn't like Oliver's performance in UEFA matches. I think Vincic is a referee who makes a lot of mistakes. Especially with the support of Ceferin, he continues despite his mistakes. I think Siebert can't handle high atmosphere matches either. I hope I'm wrong and Oliver, Vincic, Siebert will perform great.
Do Spain not have 3 VAR going to the competition? You can't throw frivolous accusations around about lobbying from England when that has happened.

Siebert really needs to take the next step though. After his sudden rise last summer, he got an abundance of big fixtures this season. Among the games I watched were:

And he didn't really shine in any of them. He required way too many VAR interventions. Had trouble implementing the lenient UEFA guidelines since it contradicts his own style. And struggled to take the role of a game leader, if required.
I didn't watch Arab Cup, so I assume Siebert secured his WC spot with good performances there in an otherwise stagnant season. He obviously isn't a bad referee by any means, but he still has to prove that he is capable of big games.
Siebert was great at Arab Cup and also deserved the appointment for the final. He seems to be a referee for big tournaments. I think he will come back stronger in the next season after a bit of a break this summer.

DeleteIn BEL-FRA and POR-TUR he was really good. True, he needed one VAR intervention in each match. But both situations were difficult to assess from the ref live perspective.
Otherwise full control and especially managing the matches is one of his main skills!
Siebert has the chance for a step forward - and should prepair himself well to use it. Esp. his body language is still too weak, he has not much "natural authority" and no "aura" like Brych had, so he must bring in hard work anvd all his good technical skills. And show them with selfconfidence and pride.

ReplyDeleteFrom what I know and what I gathered from our friends working at arbitro Internacional, here some explanations:
DeleteTobar's non selection is due to the fact he missed two fitness tests, one in Argentina a few months ago and another one recently. Therefore he is not selected because of that. I also think he suffered from an incident with Neymar in a WC qualifiers game, where he (wrongly) didn't sent off the Brazilian for purposefully colliding with him.
Cuhna's situation is a little more complicated: after being suspended several months after a Brazil-Argentina WC qualifiers game by Seneme (IIRC there was a missed VC for deliberate elbowing by Otamendi, a serious mistake but not controversial enough to justify such punishment IMO - the VAR official of the game was also suspended while I can't remember who it was), and after such absence it seems he could never have been a serious rival to be the Uruguayan official in Qatar.
Anyway, these situations leave a rather sour taste in mouth, because the CONMEBOL squad is drastically weaker with them: To at was one of the most reliable officials the last three years, even if he had a little drop of form in late 2021, and Cuhna is a very strong referee as well (I suggest the ones that didn't watch his games at Copa America 2015 to take a look: it was simply a masterclass of officiating from him).
Instead, we have Matonte who is ridiculously pushed by both FIFA and CONMEBOL, despite being simply a mediocre referee who doesn't have the skills to go to the WC (Cuhna, Ostojich and Gonzalez would have been a way better pick to represent Uruguay) and Ortega instead of Tobar, who is a good referee - nothing against him-but simply not at the same level as the Chilean.

Cunha’s situation is similar to Díaz de Vivar. Both were top of their countries under the administration of Carlos Alarcón. When Seneme came into CONMEBOL they both were unlucky and took some harsh decisions agains Brazilian Teams and the pressure from CBF came. Seneme took them away from everything inside CONMEBOL almost 2 years in a row. And, with all the pandemic situation, they missed big dates like the only FIFA tournaments we had.
DeleteThey both were in the last meeting in Argentina, but Seneme’s influence in CONMEBOL choices for the WC continued to be very very strong and their chances were gone.
It’s not a coincidence that CONMEBOL won the spot they took away from CONCACAF for this WC or that being Cáceres the head of the comitee he did not manage to take a Paraguayan referee as VAR knowing Paraguay was the second country to have the technology over here. The political of Seneme is still very big.

All of them with two appointments in Nations League A within just a couple of days. Why should UEFA use so few referees (twice) for these games? I also do not see William Collum there - his time as Elite referee seems over and I would rather expect him in Nations League B or C.

My idea for the double appointments is, that we overall cover 4 matchdays and under normal circumstances it would be not unusual for Elite referees to do 2 matches on 4 matchdays. Furthermore there are at least 4 days in between the pairs, which is seen as sufficient distance during the season or in a tournament. The referees also won't have any domestic tasks in that period.
DeleteRegarding Collum, I was thinking of a final highlight as reward for the long service as UEFA referee (36 CL games!).
In general I think, that the NL is good opportunity to give some interesting games to referees, who don't belong to the top 10 and were not selected for the WC (maybe even more than I did). I also considered that the WC referees won't handle any WC teams after their selection (as it happened in the past), but that seems hardly feasible this time.

Media attacks, ESPN among others, on Sikazwe have restarted since the announcement of the World Cup match officials. I guarantee FIFA will be asked about him whenever they do a press conference.
ReplyDeleteI'm very glad that FIFA selected Mateu Lahoz over his two countrymen. He simply deserved it on meritoric level but I'm quite sure that if it was Rosetti who made the selection, we would have seen a different name there. On the other hand, I expected to see either two Englishmen along with two Spaniards or one representative from each country. Also here, we can see who made the selection. We remember how much Collina rated Oliver in UEFA.

DeleteRegarding OFC, this was a hot topic in past on the blog, with some discussions about the real status of this confederation nowadays and its refereeing department. Well, reading the words of Kevin Stoltenkamp, head of refereeing, it sounds like having this trio at WC is already a big success. They had to spend a very long time abroad, always far from home nations, making many trips during pandemic. The development of confederation experienced serious issues, as we could see in the many postponed games and annulled tournaments. So I think they will be very pleased with this achievement, the rest was more than difficult to manage. I just hope they will get more than one game (of course in case of good performance in the first match) and not only a single appearance, as it was before. We can say that all three are quite experienced right now. Still difficult if not impossible to think about KO stage, but realistically two games in group stage should be the expected target, I think.

Turpin was also overturned during the CWC and BAY-SAL and still getting a final. Remember Kuipers/Neymar at the WC 2018 and how glad FIFA responded on that one?
You know what I think… UEFA prefers referees to whistle ‘defensively’. They’d rather see a referee not whistling a clear PK or RC - and saved by the VAR - than a referee whistling a very soft penalty or soft RC which can’t be overturned by VAR.
Sure, I am one of those persons who prefers referees to whistle clear situations on the pitch, however I don’t believe it’s important to have NO VAR interventions these days.
It won’t lead to bad assignments. Changing the initial decision on the pitch is also part of leadership and refereeing in general.

Can anybody explain what happened to Romain Lissorgue? Demoted after only 1 season in Ligue 1 and only 30 years old, quite remarkable isn’t it?

DeleteNow in detail, it's a little complicated.
He has been promoted last season, despite signals of the contrary in the pitch. While Gaillouste was a locked pick, Lissorgue should've been overruled by Lepaysant, who IMO has done enough to win his ticket to Ligue 1 last season.
But because he lives in Paris, a strong region in French refereeing system,(=politics) he got the call.
This season he wasn't bad, but he has a lot of VAR interventions, especially in his first months - almost every game - but he was even decent overall (I'd argue better than Gaillouste) but his demotion isn't undeserved: not a good enough referee in general.
To answer your remark about the demotion of a beginner in Ligue 1, it was also the case with Petit who has been demoted end of last season.
The pattern can be seen: DTA keeps its focus on demoting one of the freshly promoted refs and older refs, close to retirement (while some favored ones remain while being clearly not good enough - meritocracy at his best :))
The same goes to Vernice this season : an average referee protected and underservedly pushed ( weak control, way too card happy, poor management) because he is from the same region as Éric Borghini, CTA's president.
However, the other has easily deserved his promotion: Bollengier is a HUGE talent.
After struggling in fourth division for 4 years, he has known an exponential rise: being promoted in his 1st year in third division, then in his first year in Ligue 2, being the most talented and mature referee I've ever seen in his debut in Ligue 2 (better than Turpin, Bastien and Letexier in their respective debuts, to say the least!)
A future FIFA referee without doubt.

DeleteIn the end, it was an excellent decision (and performance in general). One could really see Stegemann's experience as a VAR here, telling Sören Storks which camera angles he needed to evaluate the incident. Only from the very last angle one could see that there was a touch with the ball. I am quite sure Stegemann asked Storks to show him also the third angle. I think I also perceived an appreciative nod by Gittelmann (AVAR) when Stegemann could identify the touch with the ball from the third angle (for which Stegemann likely asked himself) Without that, he would have given a penalty. Pursuant to the DFB interpretation, that suffices for a no penalty decision.

ReplyDeleteDeep in additional time the penalty incident (VAR), what do you think about the intensity? Is it enough for VAR intervention? Also for 1st penalty around 32', Is that punishable handball? Ref: Ivanov (Cat. 1), VAR: Kazartsev (Non-FIFA, if I'm not mistaken he doesn't have good reputation/scandalous one)
Both clear penalties. The last one very difficult to detect for the referee. Intense minutes in additional time..

If you are only interested in one person’s opinion, find a way to send a private message or only read his comments (there are some above). It’s quite annoying to have 2-3 ‘discussions’ only asking for Chefren‘s opinion. This is also against everything this blog stands for, as it cuts off any discussion which would mean that possibly valuable contributions ar lost.

ReplyDeleteFrom the start I believed Redouane Jiyed was only projected to be a VAR referee, he had already lost to Mustapha Ghorbal for the North Africa No. 1, in a fair regional allocation it is almost impossible for North Africa (Arab World) to get 2 main referee representatives (with host is Qatar too). For Bamlak for some reason he seems to have lost his way, as I recall recently he has often been a VAR referee even though so far he has rarely been a VAR referee (he is CAF's top referee), besides in terms of performance he lost to Maguette N'Diaye and Janny Sikazwe (TUN-MLI incident is only Sikazwe's bad luck), in my opinion, it is more debatable to compare Bamlak's performance with Gassama than Bamlak's with N'Diaye or Sikazwe. I really don't like CAF's style of giving the stage to Gassama because of his big name alone.

ReplyDelete1. Why there two referee from same nation? If performance is the key word for selection, so there should have been only 1-2 from Africa.
2. That is the best tournament of football. So why there quota system? Despite their lack of capability, depth, control(can see Africa's Nations cup) they got chance above there European counterpart.
3. There is women world cup and tournament. So was that necessary to take women refree by excluding deserved ones like Del Cerro, Dias, Jovanovic only for watching the tournament as fourth official or they have more depth, control or the necessity they need to officiates the game?
I have also felt that politics is a huge part in our life. U admit or not. But naked truth is that.
