  1. Well deserved for Vincic and Kovacs. Sadly Makkelie has to wait at least one more year for his CL final. Don´t unterstand the choice of the German VAR group for UECL but whatever. Surprised by Bastien as FO in CL - very interesting choice.

  2. Well, maybe I shouldn't write that as a Pole but I really think that Marciniak has been treated unfairly. To not appoint him to any of the finals after such an impressive season is very weak. Some (most of?) people saw him as a stronger candidate for the UCL final than Turpin. Many of us thought that the UEL final is a must for the Pole but surprisingly he was not rewarded even with the UECL final nor fourth official role in the UCL/UEL final. Very strange.

    1. It is indeed strange, Vincic was in a quite similar situation to Marciniak, but the Polish by far deserved this assignment before. I think that in this regard, there is something we can't know. This is said with all the respect for the Slovenian who deserved this game, but being accurate in the analysis, Marciniak had no rivals there. If you manage to know something extra from Poland, would be nice to be informed!

    2. Agree. I expected him as 4th official at the CL final tbh, as reward for his great season. Great comeback after long covid.

Next years CL final should be Marciniak or Makkelie without a doubt. Or Taylor if no English clubs are in the finals...

      Delete
  3. Well, at least there is ONE meritocracy choice. The name is Istvan Kovacs.

Vincic was clearly antipated from the beginning of the season, after he was a 4th official in 2021 year final. He officiated the typical potentially problematic, but not too much high profile games. Jovanovic as 4th official might be a clue for next years EL final or supercup.

Turpin - sorry guys, I have no polite words, so I'll be silent.

Surprised to see that Marciniak has no role at all. Hopefully, this is a clue of Danny Makkelie being the 1st choice of next year.

  4. Well, I watch lot of Turpin games in Cl this season. Ok, it's not good that politics should be incorporated in decisions like this, but all of his performances was consistent, and very solid. So, ok decision by comitee. Congrats to Kovas, and especially Vincic.

  5. Expected appointments for Turpin and Vincic, and surprise with Kovacs, but he get a reward for performance in CL SF.

    Congratulations for them.

I predicted Kovacs for SuperCup2022. Now, what do you think, who will be referee in this final?

    1. Should depend on the teams, because I would say Siebert, Gil Manzano, del Cerro Grande and Oliver are all among the candidates for the Supercup.

  6. Turpin?? :/

Even a layman can see that Makkelie and Marciniak have more fysical authority than him. Anyway, good luck to the ref teams.

  7. This committee should resign. Immediately!
    Political bullocks.

The performance principle has lost it's true value.
Very bad how Makkelie and Marciniak are treated. I hope they don't loose motivation.

  8. The choice of Bastien as 4th official is particular, because he is not on the shortlist to referee a UEFA final in the nearby future.

Imagine Makkelie or Marciniak as 4th official in the CL final after their brilliant season; that would be a disgrace.

    And committee knows.

  9. Ok finally we got the names, the waiting time was becoming very long and the tense high. First of all my deepest congratulation to all the referees appointed for the 4 final matches, I wish all of them an outstanding performance in their matches.
I'm not french but I really don't understand such strong compliant toward Turpin's assignment. Ok we all agree that Makkelie deserved the appointment a little bit more, but guys Turpin has a respectful and fantastic "palmares" and he is still one of the best european referees like as Marciniak and Taylor, who were in the race too. I don't see a scandal to have Turpin in the middle, he deserve such appointment like Makkelie, Marciniak and Taylor; we could discuss years that makkelie is a little bit better but they are peanuts which do not justify some of your attacks to Turpin and Ref commettee.
Probably what could be a little but risky is to have Bastien as 4th
I'm very surprised to don't see the name of Marciniak. He really would have deserved one of the three appointment and due to the high number of assignment (and sonorous assignment) during the season I can't understand why he has been excluded
I'm very positively surprised by Kovacs: what a huge grown !!!!!! Congratulation and standing ovation to him.
    Best wishes to all referees

  10. Well, at least I can say I'm happy that it is not easy like before to guess the referees for the finals. We have a "suprise" there, with Kovacs for ECL final. Of course "suprise"in the meaning that he was not expected because he had handled a CL semifinal and this looked to be the maximum for this season, with the referees for the four finals maybe already assigned (at least surely some of them).
My read about Kovacs choice is that committee really liked his performance in CL semifinal, but they simply couldn't ignore him.
A raising star is coming. At the same time, let's remember that maybe with Hategan still in contention, this wouldn't have happened. The best wishes to Kovacs countryman for a quick recover! Very often in the life of a referee, external factors can decide many things, of course I'm not saying that he didn't deserve this final, rather, the contrary, but maybe with Hategan, the situation would have been clearly different. I came to conclusion that the appointment of Kovacs was made in second istance, after the other choices for the finals.
Last but not least, at the beginning of the season it was simply impossible to think about him for a final, and also before the start of KO stage, this is a very interesting thing, if you ask me.
About Vincic, my second choice after Marciniak if we discuss about the fact that he deserved it, no doubts, but still in my opinion Polish should have come before. In a way, we could say that Makkelie and Marciniak got a quite unfair similar treatment. Yes, you can say that both are planned for next year, but to me expected appointments were the contrary. You can't know what is about to happen in a year, but surely committee could reply: "We will have some very good names as candidates from the beginning".
About Turpin, I think we already said everything, totally unexpected until the publication of Makkelie for CL final, but then, even without the scoop by Spain journalist, it would have been easy to guess him. CL final in his country after a poor EURO one year ago. Curious to see which style he will use in the game.
The last remark about Lehtovaara, very nice to see a Finnish name, as we guessed, either her or the Swedish for this game, after all the other candidates were out for different reasons. A long and big experience for her, I don't follow so close the women development, but being in UWCL since about 10 years should mean something.
At the end, congratulations to all and let's hope to see good matches!

  11. Someone can say that other referees would deserve the finals (expecially Makkelie and Marciniak). I have been lucky enough to see live Turpin and Vincic this year (VIL-ATA and ATA-MUTD) and both were so far impressive on how easy they handled the matches, even if with some mistakes. I did not have the same feelings with Mateu (ATA-RBL) and Siebert (YBB-ATA), who lost controls of their games and started to show lot of YC, even if they are also considered elite referees.
About Kovacs I said he would have deserved a final after that perfect match in Manchester and at the end he got what he deserved.
So good luck to the referees and their teams, I am sure they will have great performances

    ReplyDelete
  12. Congratulations to all and good luck! I am very happy for Kovacs, a great reward for the perfect game in Manchester that ends an incredible season for him.

  13. Don't want to say much, but my prediction was perfect! Congratulations to the chosen officials.

  14. Congratulations for all referees and good luck for the final games.
Stop to critizise them and wish them "Good luck" !

    ReplyDelete
  15. Congratulations to all the refereeing teams !

I think these appointments make sense. The referee for the UCL final is a strong and reliable referee for at least 4 or 5 years now. The referee for the UEL final is excellent for 2 seasons (and a very good Euro) and the referee of the UECL final is rewarded after an excellent season. One can of course argue about referees who might deserve it more, like Makkelie and Marciniak, but these appointments are right IMO.

I must say I am absolutely disappointed by the reactions on this blog. Is this a refereeing fan blog of a Makkelie fan blog ? Ok he deserved it but he will get it next year. Reading this blog we have the impression that Turpin is a newbie with no experience at all. Go look at his palmares before criticizing him and the Ref Committee.

    1. “Ok, he deserved it but he will get it next year”
How can you be disappointed by the reactions, speaking about a Makkelie fan blog, and at the same time admitting that he (Makkelie) deserved it.
Only the best referee deserves the CL final. When another referee is appointed the performance principle is simply not honored (this time for obvious political reasons) hence completely fair that the committee is heavily criticized. I dare to say, with Mr Rosetti at the top, and Mr’s Dallas, Sajn, Kuipers, Velasco at his tail, we have the weakest refcom in many years, lacking backbone.
Most of the criticism here is aimed at the committee though, not at Turpin.

      Delete
    2. To be clear: I have absolutely nothing against Clément! Contrary to many users on here, I love his nonchalant style! I think almost all negative comments about the UCL final designation are not directed against Clément but we all are surprised by a radical change of the UEFA Referee Committee's policy. Under Collina you were rewarded for good performance and treated accordingly after bad outing. Now, you are written down before the season and carried to the final by the committee that keep you far from spotlights. We could all see that referees' performances are not the criterion of assignments made by RefCom under Rosetti, unless there is a big mistake creating a storm in media or you simply participate in a very hot game with huge teams. That's not how it should work, in my opinion.

  17. On another note, the appointments of Vincic and Kovacs make it a bit less likely that they are also used in the remaining WC play-offs (although there would be enough time in between), I think.
    So I would currently say
    SCO-UKR: Makkelie
WAL-SCO/UKR: Gil Manzano (or dCG, if he is still planned for the WC)
    UAE-AUS: Sato
    UAE/AUS-PER: Marciniak (or Mateu)
CRC-NZL: Faghani (or Shukralla, if Faghani refereeing NZ-teams in A-League is a problem)

  18. Congratulations to all 4 refereeing teams.

Turpin and Vincic appointments are totally expected.

I was expecting Taylor for the UECL final but obviously a 3rd final this season would have been too much.

  20. Congrats to Istvan Kovacs for his international achievement!

Here are two interesting situations from the Romanian play-off game he refereed this Sunday - Craiova vs FCSB (0-1):

Min 41' - Possible missed penalty for FCSB:
    https://www.veed.io/view/3d88e74b-3c7d-4eea-8702-2b036e6fb82f

Min 78' - Another possible penalty for FCSB:
    https://www.veed.io/view/a04172d9-2205-4296-a279-4d0d509c24bf

For context, FCSB is fighting for the league title with CFR Cluj, the city where Istvan Kovacs currently lives in. The two teams are separated by 2 points and will face-off in the final round in what might be a title deciding game.

FCSB officials are concerned with Istvan Kovacs being appointed to their games, as they fear he might whistle against them, so his home town club CFR wins the league. It will be really interesting to see who will Vassaras appoint in case of a title decider in the last round, with Hategan out of the picture (if healthy, 99% he would have whistled that game).

    1. Istvan Kovacs does not live in Cluj. It was a confusion in the past because he was using the airport in Cluj and sometimes he stayed one or two night in Cluj for flights but things are very clear now. He is borned and still lives in Carei, there was an interview in which he clarified this rumour.
And in fact, FCSB even declared that they wish that Kovacs whistle the decisive game because " He's a great referee. You can't say anything about Kovacs. He is one of the first in Europe, he has cold blood, self-control" (FCSB owner).
After the game in Manchester, absolutely nobody has anything to reproach to him. That peformance was not only an immense boost of image and respect for him, but for the refereeing in Romania in general.
The options for the title decider are Radu Petrescu and Sebastian Coltescu, who had a very, very good season. The other First Category referee, Horatiu Fesnic, is from Cluj so he is out for this game.

  22. Since the referees of UEFA finals have been appointed, which names will go to the World Cup from Europe? Any predictions ?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think, this should be quite close to the referees, which were used in the last CL rounds (probably except Gözübüyük), i.e.
Gil Manzano (could be antother Spaniard though) Kovacs, Makkelie, Marciniak, Orsato, Siebert, Taylor, Turpin, Vincic.
If there is a 10th place, it is probably between Soares Dias and Jovanovic. If that place is only a support role, it could also be Schärer.
Also some small chances for Oliver, but as long as nobody is missing out, I don't expect two Englishmen to be selected.

      Delete
    2. Having good matches lately is an important criterion, but I don't think it's the most important one. Experience and strong background such as former tournament performances are much more important and should be taken into account.
For this reason, I believe that there will definitely be a need for experienced referees as well as young referees in a balanced manner for the World Cup.
Turpin, Kovacs, Vincic, Orsato and Makkelie are my first five from Europe. Also, I think Taylor, Marciniak, Cakir, Siebert and Grande will be in Qatar.

    ReplyDelete

    1. La Liga 2 has not yet finished, so we must wait to know it

      Delete
    2. As @xabi said Liga 123 is not finished yet, but based on the appointments they had for crucial matches, I think that among potential play-off referees should be:

Francisco José Hernández Maeso (1988) - My nº1 candidate, very talented referee with great management and soft skills (I'd dare to say even potential FIFA) who despite his relatively young age has arrived 'late' to the category as it's only his second season in Liga 123, he was stuck for 10 years in 3rd category, and in every one of those seasons except the first one (his debut season with just 22 years of age) he handled play-off matches while missing out on promotion until 2020, so despite being one of the youngest referees in the category has a significant amount of experience in his bag.

Luis Mario Milla Alvendiz (1982) - Handled (quite soundly IMO) the crucial promotion game Eibar-Valladolid last week, I wouldn't be surprised to see a swap of Andalusian referees between Melero López and him

Juan Luis Pulido Santana (1983) - Canarian referee who already has experience in several play-offs, appointed to a crucial relegation vs promotion play-off game this week (Sporting-Girona)

José Antonio López Toca (1982) - He's been a promotion substitute for the last two years and this might be one of his last shots.

Other possible candidates: Javier Iglesias Villanueva (1983, substitute for promotion last year), Rubén Ávalos Barrera (1987, he was among my main candidates last year, but inexplicably wasn't appointed for the play-offs, and IMO this season of him has been significantly weaker in terms of both appointments and performances) & Jon Ander González Esteban (1985)

      Delete
    3. My opinion: Ander Gonzalez Esteban (1985) and Luis Mario Milla (1982).

      Delete
    4. Indeed, as far as appointments during the year, Gonzalez Esteban managed top matches week by week. To my view it´s a clear candidate.

    5. Thanks for your answers , can you tell me how De La Fuente Ramos and Areces Franco are considered ? have future possibilities ?

      Delete
    6. @pita falta Zero.

Areces Franco was actually demoted a couple of seasons ago and became specific VAR (most referees who get relegated choose this path instead of refereeing in lower category, IIRC a VAR in Liga 123 is better paid than a referee in 3rd category)

De la Fuente Ramos is just a more competent version of Vicandi Garrido (average young referee pushed by 'old' CTA-RFEF because they rated him highly), he was promoted in 2014 at 22 years old with only 1 season of 3rd category experience, and rarely gets good appointments now. Fortunately for him the 2 demotion spots are likely to be occupied by the 2 referees retiring due to age limit (Gorka Sagués Oscoz and former LaLiga Eduardo Prieto Iglesias)

  35. Makkelie always involved in very particular games, after the resume of the game in Paris, following the alleged racist incident, now this one with Ukraine. I think it is important to underline the fact that this game can be even more important than a final. All spotlights will be there, looking at the Ukrainian national team (and let me say, I'm really happy they will return to play football). Not easy to officiate this game, because extremely emotional, a referee must be strong, and taking decisions from a neutral point of view in this context can be more difficult than normal conditions. Still, I think this is anoher signal of the reputation he has gained in the years.

  36. This ref committee has made some weird “political” choices over the last few years.

Turpin’s assignment to the CL final is nothing less than a political choice. It’s been too long that a Frenchman was in the middle of this prestigious final. Secondly, this is a compensation to the French after a very disappointing EURO.

Vincic has been anticipated from the start of the season. It’s been a while since we had a Slovenian to officiate a EURO final. A QF EURO, Vincic as 4th official at the EL final last year and him in charge of challenging matches but not too much in spotlight were big clues.

I strongly believe that Makkelie – IMO the best performing referee this season – was never really considered as the 1st candidate for the CL final. The Dutch referees got way too much at the EURO: a Semi Final and the Final.

Serdar Gozubuyuk in charge of a QF CL was nothing less than a “compensation” for KNVB, after Makkelie was kept outside the spotlight for whatever reasons.

Moreover, the Polish have all the reasons to be disappointed. I have tons of respect for Marciniak. How he recovered after last season is incredible. Like Makkelie, he is famous for handling risky and challenging matches, for managing the hot heads on the pitch. I strongly believe that they are preparing Marciniak for the CL final in the near future, after his Supercup in 2018.

We can already predict that a Spanish referee will be in charge of the Play-Off final in June, after they have been very unlucky with all the Spanish teams reaching the final stages of the CL this season. Another compensation(?)

    1. And finally, one last example of the famous appointment strategy of this Ref committee.
At EURO 2020, there were 3 strong candidates for the final: Brych, Kuipers and Mateu Lahoz. Roberto Rosetti had a clear favourite before the tournament even started and kept him carefully under the radar with some “safe” assignments. Meanwhile, Brych and Lahoz had to officiate some very risky and sound high profile matches, f.e. France-Portugal and Portugal-Belgium.

I think, the other Dutchman (Makkelie) was never really a candidate for a semi final. Imagine two Dutchman’s for the last three matches? That would be too much favoritism for the political bullocks, and therefore, the 2nd Dutchman had to work his ass off in some very sonorous and/or sensitive assignments. The opening game, Russia-Finland and a sonorous England-Germany at Wembley. But in the end, Rosetti had no other choices than Makkelie in the Semi final after other referees failed or were sent home for other reasons.

I’m afraid that Kuipers’ EURO final could even frustrate Makkelie’s chances in the near future to get a big final. I hope I’m wrong though. That would be ridiculous, if you look at his performances the last seasons.

Strong performances are not rewarded and ‘weak’ hesitating referees are appointed over-and-over again, as long as they avoid controversies. Committee just seems to care about keeping all associations happy and avoiding headlines/controversies, instead of the correctness of decisions. With such strategy, you don’t develop "stronger" managers on the pitch. The level of referees is so much worse compared to Collina’s era, when weak performances were punished and strong performances were rewarded. UEFA completely lost the performance principle.

Sorry for the long comment, but I hope, I am not the only one being very disappointed by the recent developments…

    3. Glad that I'm not alone on this one.

To further illustrate all these "political nonsense", I can already predict the main candidates for the upcoming years based on their nationality, which is ridiculous (of course)...

I predict that Turpin will be pushed to have the WC 2022 final. Must be a UEFA referee after 2018 (Pitana). If not Turpin, then Orsato. No changes for a Dutchman within 4-5 years after Kuipers just had the Euro final.

I reckon that Taylor will have the CL final when the first opportunity without English teams arrives - and he is 43 years old. Not much time left.
Regarding Marciniak, I reckon that he will have the CL final before Makkelie. He is 2 years older and his last UEFA final was in 2018.

EURO 2024 will be between Taylor, Marciniak and Turpin (if he didn't reach the WC final 2022).
First opportunity for Makkelie will be WC 2026 or EURO 2028.

I hope I'm totally wrong here, and that quality & performances will be the most important in the future. Those political decisions are not fair and possibly even demotivating for top referees. :/

    4. Remember that in FIFA we have Collina and not Rosetti, so appointments can be quite different from UEFA.

    5. About WC, in 2014 Pitana was a one of the favourites for final and he didn't get a final (Argentina in top4). In 2018 he had a worse performances than in 2014, but he get a final instead Faghani due to sponsorship reasons.
Maybe in WC in Qatar a final should go to Faghani?

A Europe and America's representations seems not so strong like 4 years ago.

    6. I think Escobar can be a dark horse.

    7. I also think that Faghani is the strongest candidate, his experience is huge. CONMEBOL had the last WC final referee and I don`t see anyone from UEFA who is really, really ready for this, but who knows? Small chances, but maybe a surprise made by other confederation?

Anyway, what confederation should give the referee for The Finalissima? I guess not UEFA as the game is played on Wembley.

    8. I assumed it should be a UEFA referee after 2018 (Pitana - CONMEBOL), but indeed Collina really liked Faghani.

    9. I hope faghani iran will referee wc 2022 final in Qatar he deserved the final in 2018 but he only refereed the 3 rd place match

  37. Interesting OFR yesterday in a serie B game, violent conduct and RC after OFR. Totally missed incident live, I think OFR and RC are justified, but in my opinion not all VARs would have done that.

    1. Chefren, did you watch Roma Venezia? Sozza gave 4 mins of added time, but in the 5th minute of added time there was a possible penalty to Roma. Sozza couldn't blow the final whistle as there needed enough time for Var to check there was no penalty, but in the 6th minute of added time, Venezia had a break away and nearly scored!

Did Sozza make the correct decision and not blow the final whistle because of the Var check? What if Venezia had scored at the end? Thanks for the blog as ever :)

    2. IMO clear violent conduct and good intervention by VAR.

    3. I think the intervention is mandatory. It's deliberate VC and actually could hurt. It's premeditated and not a lash out.

I would say that this speaks to the importance of camera angles. This angle is 100% the one you need. An angle from above or diagonally might not be able to show the grabbing action or amount of force clearly.

  38. Why one referee not refereed Euro and wc finals such as jonella in 1976 and 1978?

  39. No problems in the first half for Craig Pawson in FA Cup Final. There was maybe only one somehow aggressive foult that could have been sanctioned with YC on Henderson, but I don't think it is mandatory, especially given the context.
It would have been nice to see Dean, Atkinson or Moss in this final but Pawson is not doing bad at all.

  46. Congrats to all refs selected for their respective finals but this is also the first time for a french ref to get the final in the Champions league era! As for the European champions club final, we'll need to go back to 1986 and Michel Vautrot! Congrats to Clément Turpin and his team! :)
