    1. Ironically enough, everything is possible as long as Ceferin is pulling the strings.

  2. At least he has the support of UEFA Head of Refereeing, Aleksander Ceferin!

  3. If it was possible with Tori Penso, why not with Vincic. At the end, Vincic is better option than Turpin, equally good as Marciniak.

  4. The Polish article confirms what we have known for a long time: Čeferin interferes.

Vinčić’ appointments already confirmed that. He can be very poor, e.g. in Inter v Barcelona (2022), but it never has consequences. Nope, a hidden path to the UEL final 2022 and to the UCL final 2024. Poland v Estonia in the play-off? Lol.

    But there's more.

The Slovenian National Team is a sensitive issue.

Cüneyt Çakır once forgot to whistle a penalty to Slovenia. As a result, Slovenia did not qualify for the European Championship.

During the EURO 2024 qualification, Slovenia vs Finland was identified as important qualifier. The observer for this match was announced after a long delay. Later than all other games. Guess who refereed the match? Orsato. Fun fact: he whistled a penalty to Slovenia.

At EURO2024, Orsato whistled a penalty against Slovenia. In addition, 6 YCs of which 5 for Slovenia. 25 fouls of which 17 against Slovenia. Apparently it doesn't matter that Slovenia only had 27% ball possession.

By the way, compare that to Turpin's stats in ENG-SVN. :D More cards and fouls AGAINST England. Turpin is still around. Perhaps it wasn’t entirely coincidental that Turpin and Orsato both had to pass the “test” with the Slovenian NT? :)

Since Ceferin is pulling the strings, we must also emphasize the following: His good relationship with the president of PSG.

Remember that Gil Manzano whistled a handball in favor of PSG. What was his next appointment? Milan-PSG.

I have criticized the handball whistled by Marciniak in PSG-Newcastle, in favor of PSG. Probably a wrong OFR according to the LOTG. However, it had no consequences for the Polish referee. What if that handball was the “expected” decision, according to Čeferin?

It is much worse than we thought.
I’ve reached to the point where I even find a draw suspicious. PSG ended 2nd and group, but draws the weakest group winner on paper in R16 (Sociedad). It’s a bit too coincidental for my taste. But this is obviously not a topic for a referee blog. Ignore it.

Many people are posting in the comments that Rosetti should resign. Somehow I would find that hypocritical. After all, he turned a blind eye when Cakir was treated inhumanely. He refused to support Makkelie after challenging games and threats. He was a passive observer when Taylor was scolded by Mourinho. Suppose Rosetti resigns now: the one and only reason is because Čeferin‘s actions have had impact on a compatriot, whereas he did NOTHING when other referees were mistreated and humiliated.

  5. Maurizio Mariani in Colombia - Panama, his third and last game in the tournament.

    2' Missed foul
    https://streambug.org/cv/8637a8

6' Possible YC for reckless elbow
    https://streambug.org/cv/fb71a0
I think that Colombian player exaggerated the contact, it is not possible to be sure about the intensity, Panama player used the arm to protect his position. Maybe YC wouldn't have been wrong, but I think that all the focus on the incident following later was mostly because it happened close to benches and the fouled player tried to do it bigger.

12' Penalty, correct decision, long VAR check mostly for offside
    https://streambug.org/cv/38ddf1

38' Missed YC, clearly reckless challenge (last replay)
    https://streambug.org/cv/268c83

45' YC (for SPA), first YC of the game, rather harsh, to me not 100% mandatory
    https://streambug.org/cv/fd140c

70' Management - Possible penalty and then advantage following a goal scored.
    https://streambug.org/cv/50fa28
Mariani was about to stop game for penalty, but luckily for him, he didn't have time, and he saw the goal scored changing his gesture. Not the best management, but final decision was correct. Referees should be ready to wait before a possible penalty in all situations, even this one, and we must admit it was not easy to expect a goal scored, given how the action had continued.

90'+2 Penalty and YC for reckless, correct decision.
    https://streambug.org/cv/0dde73
At least reckless challenge, but given the force of the kick, possible RC for SFP. I agree with VAR that this one was rather bordeline, but missing YC would have been serious mistake, in case.

So, several things to be reviewed in other areas but mostly crucial decisions OK, very good tournament for Mariani, if compared to what we saw for the other referees, for sure one of the best at Copa América. Of course impossible to give the final to a guest referee (this would be mortifying for CONMEBOL refereeing), but on paper he would have been a candidate with such outing. He still keeps the idea that I have about him, sometimes very good accurate decisions, but he can start to be shaky in challenging contexts. This is at moment the limit, waiting for the possible Elite call, now that Orsato is leaving.

  6. I guess that, like in each organization and job, Rosetti must report to his boss and his boss is Ceferin. We can argue if Rosetti has a strong personality or if he is so soft to accept any decision from the top. We can argue if an other Referee committee chairman would be able to make resistance and take decision based only on performance and meritocracy. But each organization is a hierarchical one, so sometime the final decision is on the president's hand. So I guess that the real point is how much is fair, honest and skilled the president. Each organization, farmer, industry, company should be driven by a fair, honest, skilled and not corrupted CEO or president and in most of the case able to delegate. Does Ceferin have such qualities ? If he has decided just because Orsato has assigned a (correct) penalty against his country, the answer is NO. Has Rosetti to resign ? It's matter of money; If a manager like Rosetti is no trusted by his boss and (maybe) by his team, and if his authority is became none, yes he should resign. I think that his salary in the past years was good enough to say stop. But.......

  7. So Orsato confirmed at home right now? I highly doubt about Marciniak chance, but when we see how FIFA treat Penso and of course Marciniak WC campaign. I wouldn't surprise and more likely to see Penso scenario on Vincic than Marciniak WC scenario. But did we really have 3rd option? Taylor and Turpin? Beida scenario in AFCON would be nice to try by UEFA with Letexier? My predictions final referee would be Vincic (I really hope I'm wrong because for performance principle the others 5 names mentioned much better than Vincic).

  9. The more I’m thinking of it: the way Čeferin is pulling the strings can have a purpose. Perhaps, rejecting the top referees is part of his masterplan to create the ‘Penso’-scenario for Vinčić, in case he has a good performance tonight.

    Think about it:
    - Two of the strongest referees (Orsato and Makkelie) have been sent home for abysmal reasons.
    - Orsato was sent home after he whistled a penalty against Slovenia. Was Čeferin really angry about that penalty? Or is he just creating an argument to get rid of the strongest contender for the final?
    - Makkelie was sacrificed in games that generate a lot of media attention, and after full control in Cro-Ita, controversially rejected.
    - Taylor didn’t make himself very popular in GER-ESP, and that was more or less expected given his form this season.
    - Turpin is kept in Germany, however with his NT still in, he might be unavailable in the end. And he had 3 OFR’s in the opener, thus if Čeferin wants, he can create a case against Turpin’s nomination.
    - And finally, Marciniak. A referee who has already officiated almost anything. He performed well, but his appointments in Germany were nothing special. A lower profile GS game and a R16 game - which was an easy win by the Swiss. His EURO didn’t scream ‘Wow’. And the offside flag still can be used as an argument against him.

What I’m trying to say with many words is: the referees who are still in Germany don’t make sense. Čeferin can make a strong case against all of them, if he wants. He keeps Turpin regardless of 3 OFR’s and Les Bleus. He keeps Marciniak regardless of all his finals and his scratched reputation. It doesn’t add up!

Vinčić will officiate his 3rd game tonight. Some referees have had 4 appointments. If Vinčić has a good performance tonight, I won’t be surprised if Čeferin will pushes him into the final ‘by lack of better options’. I obviously hope I’m very wrong!

  10. It's right that Orsato leaves the stage with (only) one big final and this was during Covid. Other referees like for example Taylor and Vincic have collected more finals - and for sure, they were and are not better than Orsato, but Orsato is better than them. But the sentence "ended his career in this way" is, in my opinion, exaggerated. In the last years, Orsato was the man for the big matches. He opened the World Cup in Qatar, he whistled a SF in the same WC - these are great matches, which also most of the top refs do not achive. SF in Champions League also count to this category. Also this European Championship cannot named as a real disappointment for Orsato - 4 games, two KO. This is - at least - OK. He had a great career, which started driving fast after Rizzoli and Rocchi - Orsato did not have so many years at the very top because of the other Italian referees and he was comparatively old, when he reached his climax. Again: A great career, also without the Final in Berlin!

  12. A plea for tonight and the rest of the Euro: let’s analyse the three remaining performances on their merits and not be influenced by the context of the appointments. Many words have, quite rightly, already been spent on the choices and there will be many more, including by myself at some stage, after the games/tournament. But let’s be fair tonight, please; I can’t stand the prejudiced assessments of performances. Good luck to the three referees who will finish this Euro!

  18. Great first half. Perfect foul detection, only YC was mandatory, correct to not give more cards (2 situations where he could have but he chose not to sanction which was optimal for this game so far).

  19. Very calm game for Vincic so far, with both teams focused on football, and finally a nice game to be watched.

  20. Very good performance so far. The referee jumped in when necessary, good alertness and prevention, especially after late challenge in 35'. The only mandatory YC shown in 14' for reckless SPA tackle (not a full contact to deem it SFP). Two late challenges by FRA in 35' and 45+1' were not mandatory YCs but maybe it was possible for balancing reasons, no mistake by not cautioning a player there, though. The challenge in 45+2' was exaggerated by ESP player, correct no caution. Good job by 4OF to warn Spanish coach for mobbing - YC possible as well as in 14' to Mbappé for demanding a YC to an opponent.

  40. Was there a reason the English and French officials were not sent home after the quarter finals? Maybe this was it. If France or England were defeated the officials could be used in the final. And gets Rossetti out of a hole. Could Marciniek be seriously considered after his critical errors in the CL? My prediction- the French officials have been slightly better and I would have Letexier with the whistle and Turpin the FO. Might be early in Letexier’s elite career but he’s proved he’s capable enough IMO.

  41. Guys, I dont know how anybody can consider Turpin as a final candidate(its your legitimate right,of course),but such game needs strong authority and top perfromance. Turpin is OK, but after first game, not easy to expect him in final, just not possible. Maybe as fourth official him or Letexier, nothing more than that. I stay with Vincic or Marciniak.

  46. In my opinion, Slavko Vinčić presented a very good performance in tonight's match, probably even faultless from a technical standpoint, and let me say I'm very glad he managed to recover after a definitely suboptimal performance on MD2. This was the Vinčić I like. Of course, the game itself was of normal difficulty, with two fair-behaving teams and almost no hard fouls and/or dirty play, however it's only fair to say Vinčić dealt with such a game in a really optimal manner.

Foul detection was on a good level overall, and I don't think he missed any clear foul during the whole game. He had full control over the game and players, but also adapted his approach to the demands of this particular match by staying in the background and stepping in when necessary, also showing good prevention skills in key moments when the game could have become heated (35', 89'). Fitness level was optimal as usual, as well as good cooperation within the whole team, with quite proactive Kružliak in the role of FO.

Vinčić's disciplinary management was also optimal IMO, with 4 correct YCs issued and none mandatory ones missed: 14' (ESP22, reckless tackle/SPA), 60' (FRA8, reckless scissor tackle), 89' (FRA6, late reckless tackle, very important decision with the incident happening in front of the benches and the whole ESP bench reacting on it), 90+1' (ESP19, SPA/LoR). The incident in 14' had some elements of SFP, mainly the point of contact, but the (lack of) intensity of the tackle clearly indicates it was still on the reckless side. There was a number of possible YCs as well, but I think Vinčić should be backed for not cautioning in all of these cases, as none were mandatory nor actually necessary in accordance with the game dynamics: 35' (FRA22, possible reckless knee ramming), 39' (ESP24, possible SPA, but no actual control over the ball), 45+1' (FRA17, knee ramming to the back, similar to 35'), 45+2' (FRA12, only a careless tackle), 87' (ESP21, careless tackle as well), 90+1' (FRA4, possible reckless use of arm). It is also worthy to note that Vinčić maintained a consistent line/criterion in all of these scenes, thus ensuring predictable decision-making during the whole match.

Both ARs performed on a good level as well, with AR2 correctly letting the 0 - 1 by FRA to stand, and AR1 indicating a very good onside in 76', in a rather tight situation.

Taking everything into consideration, I think it's fair to say Vinčić performed on a very good level in this match, meeting the specific demands of the game and thus justifying his appointment. To be honest, I'm really glad for him, especially after criticising his performance in ESP – ITA. He seemed relaxed and self-assured, and that's Vinčić I like to observe.

  47. Maybe an unpopular opinion but reading some comments, I think Turpins performance in GERSCO is overhated. Yes, three VAR interventions are not satisfying and the RC should have been spotted on field. But he also did a terrific job implementing Rosettis somewhat radical guidelines, paving the path for his colleagues for what was generally perceived as a successful group stage. Imo, Turpin wasn't praised adequately for that.

Meanwhile, Orsato made blatantly clear in all his matches that he is not going to adapt a new style in his last tournament before retirement, undermining the purpose of the guidelines and betraying his colleagues. If a big name like him doesn't obey, it gets harder for the younger referees to enforce the new discipline. If I was Rosetti, I would be pissed.
Also, lets not forget that Orsato had an almost equally bad group stage game as Turpin in GERSUI with one VAR intervention and another one missed for blatant holding in the box... which once again was part of Rosettis pre tournament guidelines.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree with all of you in regards to the level of match, it wasn’t difficult. You can only referee the game that you are given. In fact you could say that it was due to his match management that it remained so contained and controlled. You could also say that is down to the teams too who just wanted to play football.

For me, he wasn’t really tested. It wasn’t a difficult game, with difficult decisions and no contentious decisions. The level of his performance definitely justified the appointment despite the questions around the earlier games.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Theory is alive, Ceferin wants his countryman Vincic in the final. All he had to do is:
    1. Get a rid of the best referees, with controversial rejections
    2. The alternatives that are still “waiting” in Frankfurt -> Ceferin can create a case against all of them

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. *And finally, some of us argued why the appointments of Zwayer and Vincic were not swapped. Including myself.

The reason is clear IMO. Ceferin doesn’t care about Zwayer.

All he cares about is Vincic. He had to shine in the top game of the round, Spain v France, between two fair and football-focused teams. To give Ceferin an argument for preparing that SF + F case.

  50. Good performance of Vincic team. The question is who will be appointed to the Final? I have read a lot above about the politics, what is sad and discouraging, therefore the best solution should be sending to the final the referee who is beyond all suspicions: political, personal, sporting. In my opinion, appointment for Marciniak will close any discussions. Two very solid performances on this tournament, strong personality, nationality outside the UEFA politics puzzle. Marciniak guarantees very good management and cuts off all speculation.

  51. Until yesterday we were here talking about the Slovenian as one of the referees not among the best EURO officials, with a subpar performance in the group stage which would not have given him the right to referee a match as important as yesterday's semi-final. After yesterday's match, it seems that everyone thinks the opposite, and that he can dream the final. In my opinion, this sudden way of coming to conclusions that we read is very limiting. We must always evaluate everything as a whole. Had Vincic justified being designated for the semi-final before yesterday? Not for me. Did he officiate the semi-final well yesterday? Yes, fine for me. However, a match within the reach of an Elite referee who also worked on his past mistakes. But now, from now on, seeing him as a candidate for the final, just for that reason, is wrong. We must evaluate everything and not the single moment. If one goes back to the full tournament from the start, as far as I'm concerned, he still shouldn't be included in the list of candidates to referee the final. Because in the end, in addition to good officiating, it is physiological that someone needs to be exposed a little before obtaining an excellent result and the Slovenian has already received it (CL final).

  52. Update from Italy, reports of a very disappointed Orsato. It is reported there was also a confrontation with committee (but not with Rosetti in particular). The decision of not appointing him for the final, came a certain time before the appointment for quarterfinal, indeed after the R16 POR - SVN.

  53. A good performance by the Slovenian, in a relatively calm match

  54. After the all mess UEFA/RefCom have created, it will be difficult to appoint a referee for the final.

Marciniak after just 2 games? And not the most difficult ones? I don’t like it. And the Germans will still remember the offside flag thing.

Turpin - I really like him as a referee. However, a final appointment is not fair and justified after 3 OFR’s. Referees from smaller nations would be sent home tbf.

Vincic - always gets a special treatment by UEFA/RefCom. The hidden appointment, followed by something big. For Makkelie, it is exactly the opposite. Difficult to explain! Good performance by Vincic yesterday in a calm and easy game. However, his performance in groupstage do not justify a final appointment.

Taylor: not good enough in GER-ESP.

    ——————

Orsato: I didn’t like him in SWI-GER, and his fitness issues were visible to anyone. As if he was slowing down games on purpose. Having said that, it’s a disgrace how he was forced to end his career. Should have been a bigger game. Shame on you, UEFA.

Makkelie: always sacrificed in high profile / decisive groupstage matches. Controversially rejected after CRO-ITA. He’s managed like that for years now, and never rewarded. The truth is, if Makkelie was appointed to Oliver’s or Nyberg’s games at this EURO, he would still be around after the groupstage. For me, he would have been the better option in ESP-GER.

Gil Manzano: just 1 groupstage game is awful management. There have been worse performances.

Referees in easy games can stay, whereas the referees in more difficult games are sent home, because of some complaints. UEFA cares too much about media attention and politics. This is not how it is supposed to be. What a mess…

    1. Simply the best: Final for Letexier!

    2. I think that Uefa would like to avoid Kassai situation. He should be saved for future.

    3. While I agree that assigning Letexier to EURO final would be an incredible appointment and maybe too early for many reasons, I also think we can't be sure the Kassai situation would be the same for all referees. The Hungarian also lost motivations, there can be referees with different mental approach, trying to get always more and more.

  55. If the Dutch progress tonight I would suggest getting Howard Webb out of retirement for the final :p.

On a serious note totally uncalled for treatment of Orsato, there is really only 2 options for the Final now Turpin or Marciniak. I can’t see Vincic getting appointed to the final although how the handeling or referees in this tournament has gone it would surprise me.

Do we have any information on which referees are left in Germany obviously we have the semi final teams the 2 French teams and The Polish Team. Are all the other officials gone home ?
