  1. Why doesn't Meler get any big games since his good Euro?

    1. The new Football Federation and the new Central Referee Committee in Türkiye have crossed out Halil Umut Meler. He doesn't get any big matches here anymore. He gets very few matches. They are also unimportant matches. There are very arbitrary referee appointments in Türkiye now. Also, last week the president of the football federation threatened the president of Galatasaray with death. Galatasaray invited him to resign. I think the president of the football federation will resign or change soon. With the new president Halil Umut Meler will be able to take big games again and referee more quality games in Europe.

  2. Well, the first thing we can say is that Velasco Carballo was then originally planned to observe Mariani, because it was not possible to see the Italian in Benfica - Bologna. For some reasons, he will focus on another name in that game, and now Mariani has a regular Croatian observer. Sometimes... we observe more than the same referees I would say. Still a very important game for the Italian, but he must do well, very long time always with rather disappointing performance. But as said, in this case in my opinion they will promote him regardless of the performance. We will see.
Now I think Massa on Wednesday and Guida in Europa or maybe Conference League on Thursday.
As for the rest, another game for Sanchez Martinez after Slovan - Milan, to get games after the stop for Spanish referees. My idea is that committee doesn't follow closely him (one could maybe even include the countryman...) in terms of assessing performance game after game, but they just get as Spanish what they are entitled to (indeed this one, despite of the very good path for the French side is a rater minor game like Slovan - Milan).
For Oliver, Paris Saint German. The French side with big issues in this Champions League, so for sure a "minor" game looking also at the standings but it's always PSG.
Taylor always "relegated" to games very far away from the spotlights.
Meler back in Champions League in a rather not interesting clash, Bayern win very expected here.
For Marciniak and Vincic the Italian teams, as always :)
Differently from other games, there are always troubles in finding names but well... these choices can give us a clue about Juventus - Manchester City. Both will be out from that clash, so the focus now seems to be on Turpin. Otherwise, Makkelie could be another candidate coming back to officiate Italian teams in challenging contexts. Very difficult moment for Juventus, they are not in form, the same could be said for City, but again, the team that will lose this game, will say very likely goodbye to Champions League.
We have also San as AVAR, so this surely means Schaerer tomorrow, but I think it will be hard to see the Swiss in Turin. To me, more experience is needed.
Regular game for Bastien finnding room in CL, while still very hidden path for Zwayer, since EURO, this has been his management. Always minor games. Planned for something big to follow, very likely...

  3. Well, at least a few correct predictions :)
Vincic was an easy guess, because they released the appointment so early, prior to MD5 when Vincic had a rest; it had to be the Slovenian. I don’t think its a very risky game, both teams have a good ranking in the table.
Italian crew in Leipzig was an educated guess after they swapped Carballo to Bologna (and Mariani was first name that came to our minds regarding promotions).
Oliver with PSG was my first prediction until I found out that Oliver already refereed 4(!) UCL games this season. Good strike for him.
Zwayer and Taylor are playing hide and seek. And we can all guess the reason for that.
Taylor has a Sunday game; impossible to predict him already in a game on Tuesday.
Turpin in Juventus-City would be a smart management for 2 reasons: Turpin is obviously useless in PSG-City (MD7) and they keep both Vincic and Marciniak as option for the MD7-game in Paris.

    1. About Taylor and Zwayer, similar use but we must say very different reasons. While the English CAN'T officiate some teams, the management with the German (similar to Makkelie in my opinion) seems deliberate, to prevent any possible issue. They are kept in my opinion, while Taylor definitely can't be seen in top games at moment for other reasons.

In Juventus - Manchester City one should also mention Letexier following his top form, but still, a game in which you have everything to lose there. Don't know how much committee could do that, and h already got LIV - REA as rather unexpected assignment.

      Delete
    2. Yes, I thought Letexier had poor reports with Juve (vs Leipzig), but Juventus won the game. So that doesn’t rule him out entirely.

And agree about Taylor. His options for a UCL final are very limited. He should probably hope for, maybe a Dutch team vs a Spanish. Or PSG. The odds to see Oliver in the UCL final are higher imo. Another issue: a trusted English VAR.

Zwayer and Makkelie are very hidden indeed, reminds me of Turpin 2022 and Vincic 2024.

You can tell that they didn’t want Marciniak in the UCL final 2023, straight after the WC final. He got the most difficult games in the knock-out stage, whereas Vincic was appointed to City-Leipzig (R16). With hindsight… Suspicious. But after Vincic and Makkelie were in poor form and Taylor not available (English team), no other options than the Polish.

      Delete
    3. For Turpin, I agree, but Vincic got Lazio-Atletico, Paris-Milan and an important Napoli-Braga in the GS last season. IMO, that's not hidden at all - and surely not comparable to the appointments of Zwayer, Makkelie and Taylor.

      Delete
    4. I wonder if matches like GNK DINAMO - CELTIC FC are really that unattractive. Both teams are close together in the table and are just in the top 24. So the winner of this game can pull away a little, the loser risks teams like PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN catching up. Especially with this new mode, I think it's very positive when the top referees are not appointed for the same teams forever and whistle them for the third time towards the end of the season. But it's true that not all referees are "hidden" equally. I don't know if BAYER 04 LEVERKUSEN - FC INTERNAZIONALE MILANO (both currently in the top 6) really needs Slavko Vinčić after ARSENAL - PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN, FC BARCELONA - BAYERN MÜNCHEN and REAL MADRID - AC MILAN. In view of the current table standings, it could also have gone to a promising referee in order to gain experience with top teams, in my opinion.

      Delete
    5. @Peter, games like Dinamo-Celtic are perfect for a form check and to monitor a referee. The advantage is that minors mistake won’t generate headlines all over Europa. That is what we mean to say by hidden. Not talking about importance, but spotlights and risks. It keeps the chances to do a UEFA final alive.

      @ Philipp:
Vincic was tested in Milan-PSG and then started to avoid the brightest spotlights. I recall:
      - Ukraine vs Macedonia (fun fact, this instantly ruled him out for a decisive Italy-Ukraine, where Manzano was sacrificed)
      - Napoli-Braga could have been a risky Newcastle-Milan in group of death (guess who was sent there?), very delicate after the PSG-Newcastle handball;
      - Poland-Estonia EURO play-off.

  4. I am seeking advice on impact in offside position. Under the current LotG, if a player in an offside position does not touch the ball, he will not be punisched unless there is a "clear action" towards the ball or an opposing player. However, if he is close to the keeper and the ball passes very close to him, there is no way for the keeper to make a save.

    https://x.com/DAZN_JPN/status/1865631186875220441
How can we explain why the rule states that there is no offside offence in this situation?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I would say that here we have an attacker in an offside position, in the line of vision of the goalkeeper, impacting the ability of the goalkeeper to play the ball. Offside offence IMO.

  5. Ludicrous appointment of Taylor, he has a big premier league game this afternoon at 16:30, Spurs vs Chelsea which has had lots of controversy in recent seasons. Then a Tuesday UCL game, really?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Not a terrible performance by Colombo in the evening match between Napoli and Lazio, but with something to review: 3 YCs missed (Marusic 43'; di Lorenzo 36', 52' -author of seven fouls and a simulation at 81', incredible he never got a YC-), while it is unclear whether the YC for Gouendozi was for protests or whether Colombo was wrong in attributing the foul (committed by Romagnoli); wrong YC for Castellanos (61'); clear advantage not given to Napoli (61').
More generally, a good day in Serie A for Rocchi after so many decidedly bad weeks: the only controversy was from the Milan coach on Friday night, but absolutely without reason. Not the best Marchetti in Turin yesterday, but without crucial mistakes.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Two interesting moments for Taylor in last night's game at Spurs.
33' Caicedo tackles over the ball, catching the Tottenham players' shin. Nothing given by Taylor.
45' A high Spurs elbow to the head causes some pain to Lavia, free kick only.
Both deemed as 'not excessive force' by the VAR Gillett, which I would agree, although both seemed like missed yellows.
Second half had two clear penalties whistled by Taylor, who remained in good control throughout
(And on the topic of lack of rest, after the wind leading to no Merseyside derby, at least Oliver should be extremely well rested)

    ReplyDelete
  8. Dankert & Brand are the VAR team on Oliver's match
Van Boekel is AVAR on Vincic's match.
Still no AVAR on Taylor's match - I'm presuming Gillett with Banks as Jared also working as AVAR for Wednesday's match.

  12. UCL LP, MD6
    Girona(ESP)-Liverpool(ENG)
    R: B.Bastien(FRA) VAR: B.Millot(FRA)

4' Good preventive action before corner kick
23' Public warning to Gir3, for carrying ball into pitch, to dellay restart, acceptable IMO
25' Strong public warning to Gir16 for lack of respect and Liv7 for illegal use of arms
40' Potential YC for Liv38, for SPA-holding, but not mandatory IMO

    1. 47' Missed clear YC to Liv38 for illegal use of arms
53' YC to Liv7 for persistent infringement
55' Correct YC to Gir14, for SPA
61' Penalty correctly given to Liverpool after OFR
79' Correct YC given to Liv2 for reckless tackle
87' Crystal clear YC to Gir16 for lack of respect
90' Poor teamwork, R correctly whistled foul close to AR1, who didn't reacted
90+ There was some information in broadcast about YC to Gir24, but no clue for what

  14. OFR in Girona for penalty to Liverpool after stamp on back of foot- suprised it wasn't given at first with boot coming off however, is it really a clear error?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To me it looked like Diaz started going down before the significant contact. On field penalty would have been supportable but probably doesnt reach bar for VAR intervention imo

      Delete
    2. I’d plead against intervention as well. It’s the Diaz moving his leg backwards and Van de Beek has to put his foot somewhere…
However after that it seemed Van de Beek stepped/landed on the ankle/calf of Diaz, which would be more punishable to me, but that image wasn’t shown to Bastien.

  15. Wrong PK for Liverpool! It was stamp on back of foot but never a penalty

    ReplyDelete

    1. Disagree : stamp on foot and shoe touched and waved away. No other possibility than PK…

      Delete
  16. Zwayer 1st half in terms of disciplinary control:

6'Taylor YC...maybe some would say harsh in terms of monutes played, but clear step on the foot and dangerous play.

34'maybe missed or not intentionally given yc to DZG Spikic..ideal chance to even the score in terms of cards..late foul that could have easily been punished.

35'then minute later DZG's Rog gets very unfortunate and fouls late CEL player after maybe previously being fouled in that same process where he gets YC.
Another DZG player got YC for protests.

38'Maeda with late foul, gets YC..maybe some would forgive that, but the fact that we had hit 4 minutes did not help the player.

Now 2nd half 56'clear SPA and 60' wrongfully awarded corner for the away team.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I find it interesting the positions that Bastien is taking. Very wide in certain instances, almost parallel with trailing AR at times. Is this common with his style or something new?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Here the OFR in Girona - Liverpool:
    https://streamff.com/v/545ee621
Defender removed attacker's shoe by his action, nevertheless I agree this is not a standard penalty we expect to be called after OFR, so in my opinion there can be room for discussion, even more if the contact was only with shoe (removing it) and not with foot, but it's hard to say. I think this was not an easy call from the room, but one can understand why they decided for intervening. There can be different views, but once seen many can agree that if seen, penalty.

    1. I can't sympathize with this penalty decision, but I sympathize with the Referee and VAR. I wonder if they are happy with this decision change. I can't help but be glad that I won't be in that situation myself.

      Delete
    2. I think when the shoe comes off you have to expect that VAR will call for OFR to let the referee judge if it is enough for a penalty. Otherwise, VAR would be doing the referee's job.

  19. Ridiculous decision. what is football becoming?

  20. I didn't understand this YC for Carlos Augusto

    ReplyDelete
  21. Very long VAR check after a penalty awarded by Taylor. Clear foul but very difficult to understand whther inside the box or not, VAR changed it into a free kick, however based on what one can see, it's still impossible to judge.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Bruge - Lisbon. What is thisl Clear penalty kick. The foul is inside the area (clear inside) and Taylor (and the VAR) gives a free kick outside. The image on TV is conclusive: the contact occurs well within the area. Unbelievable.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Imo correct decision. It may have looked like contact continued into the box but it didn't, what happened was that the defender pushed the leg of the attacker onto his own tripping him, and that happened inside the box, but contact was outside

  23. Correct penalty and YC for genuine DOGSO by Marciniak in Bergamo. This call was immediately accepted by players, and the penalty taken very quickly.

    1. Very marginal and questionable, not quite obvious.

      Delete
    2. Agreed, one can see the level of acceptance of Marciniak's calls from all players. Even some of the borderline decisions. Truly complete control

      Delete
    3. Agreed with Chefren, that is :)

      Delete
    4. Continuing on my point, there was a moment in the first half with a no foul decision by Marciniak for Vinicius Jr that was completely accepted by the player. Again, total control of the match and acceptance from the players.

      Delete
    5. But at the same,we can remember penalty that he whistled in WC FINAL.
Whenever decision is questionable or borderline he whistles and no VAR can change that output.

      Delete
    6. Yes, that's the big skill of Marciniak, other referees can only dream of being so strong while taking decisions.

      Delete
  24. Penalty called by Marciniak for Atalanta. It looked like a clear penalty at first, but after seeing the replay, I must say it is very questionable, barely any contact and maybe should not be enough for a penalty.

    ReplyDelete
  25. What happens with the yellow cards that are clearly shown incorrectly, are they erased?

    ReplyDelete

    1. In case of wrong referee decisions - the yellow card stands.
In case of wrongly displayed yellow cards in the broadcast - the card doesn't count.

  26. VAR intervention in Leipzig to disallow 1-3 and then 2-2 to follow, very important turning point in the game. It was not easy for AR2 live, but I think flag could have been raised. As for the rest, doesn't look a challenging task for Mariani so far.

  28. Meler: at first a disallowed goal for a foul on keeper and then what looked like a very soft penalty, I think one should even wonder if VAR had arguments to confirm it... attacker touched after having kicked ball but not a reckless challenge in my opinion.

    1. Maybe only point for discussion is possible offside before decisive corner in the end of the game (goal scored). But one can't say based on the video and it seems rather onside.
I liked the YC he issued against Inter player, but of course here it's criticized...

      Delete
    2. Chefren, you could have answered my message and explained why you think it was a correct YC, instead of ignoring it and then complaining about it below: that seems to me to be a more mature attitude rather than getting indignant while answering other messages, don't you think? By the way, I saw last night live on the air a Leverkusen player pushing Carlos Augusto to the ground in an attempt to get free on the corner, and then Carlos Augusto getting back up nervously and going back to marking the player. It's possible that I missed something (in fact, I wrote "I didn't understand," not "clear mistake by Vincic"), because you don't usually give YCs to players who suffer fouls

      Delete
  34. The problem in Meler's games is that every decision taken seems something that comes out from the context, difficult to understand the line used. I'm not convinced by both decisions he made, video to follow today.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Here the clips from Meler game.

    Disallowed goal:
    https://streambug.org/cv/3c83a9
The action by attacker against keeper has been punished. While one must admit that the action is very unfair with player assuming also a very detestable attitude, I think that in reality this was not a very clear foul, keeper made all the movement he wanted to make, and he wouldn't have complained. But most import thing, one should wonder how Meler spotted that, as he was far away and I don't think he had control of this "hidden" situation. Also, immediately after the call he was in contact with VAR. The process seems not that clear. But of course you can support the inal decision.

    Penalty to Bayern:
    https://streambug.org/cv/7b4523
Also in this case you can fully support referee, but I don't see the reason to punish such action by defender, once the attacker has kicked and there is this soft contact. I would have assessed as reckless maybe a contact with the first leg, but this didn't happen, to me a too harsh decision. I wouldn't whistle such penalties if not very clear and with the fouling player to be booked following his action. We can say the same thing as previous incident, nobody would have asked for that, if not given.
In the clip there is also a previous PAI for possible handball but correct decision to play on.

Well, in the end we can say that referee took two particular and supportable decisions, but if he hadn't done that, nothing would have happened. So in my opinion reading the game before taking decision is an important factor, if the Turkish felt that these two calls were very mandatory OK, but to me, definitely not..

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sorry, but how can we "fully support the referee" on the penalty?

My understanding is that on shots at goal like this, with a late tackle making contact after the ball is gone, it should not be asssessed as a penalty unless the foul is reckless or worse (which is what you suggest, Chefren). In MLS, that is an explicity instruction--it's a way of making sure there is some consistency on these types of play. It seems, given you mention the same thing, that it's likely an instruction in UEFA, too? If so, then caling a careless foul here is simply wrong and not supportable. I mean, sure, almost anything is supportable by the text of Law 12. But referees like Meler have a higher standard and clearer instructions. My understanding is that this is simply not supposed to be a penalty.

  36. Here the OFR from Sanchez Martinez game:
    https://streambug.org/cv/4642e3
Perception mistake, the Spanish just thought about a handball and whistled based on sensation. That's the kind of mistake that should never happen, because it's sure that referee has not seen any clear handball, but he thinks that it exists, worried of missing it.
Such mistakes can be frequently committeed more than other referees by officials from Spain and Italy, as they come from countries with an obsession for handballs. A more natural approach would maybe solve some issues and avoid some mistakes.
