Starting to comment with Wednesday's game, a very hot and crucial one for Peljto, with Turkish big team against the well known Spanish side. Match also important for qualification. The Bosnian gets Europa League after many good Champions League appearances, big trust by committee and in that case not a demotion to get EL but another good signal.
ReplyDeleteSchaerer finally back in a game and it will be an interesting one in Glasgow with a British derby.
Kružliak with the other top clash, Ajax - Lazio, also a particular background for this game, but Italian fans will not be allowed to be at stadium in Amsterdam, so for this reason less challenging "out of the field" (but maybe this will concern the delegate and not that much the referee).
In Porto I don't know whether the game will be the last Stavrev (1977) appearance in UEFA, if he is planned to be retired from the list. In case, a referee with very long experience will leave. We will know soon (maybe next week).
Xhaja with a rather good game on paper in Germany (Romanian side can qualify), but normal observer for him, it seems as he needs still to develiop for committee.
Tohver back after his "half" retirement, while we can also underline a very good observer for Brooks, De Bleeckere.
Finally a top game (as for Europa League) for Treimanis after a poor period, and Siebert in Rome will find a very agitated context. Hopefully everything will go in the right way for him, but the Italian side has at moment definitely many things to think about than complaining about the referees.
I think we can carefully conclude that so far the performance level (and avoiding big controversy) are taken into account, which is obviously a good thing:
Delete- Peljto is indeed doing well, 4 UCL games already, and this UEL game is not a demotion at all.
- Unlike for example Schärer, Nyberg and Guida. They are paying a price for a significant mistake. Or for example Letexier who was temporarily dropped to the Conference League.
- We haven’t seen the English VAR Attwell in UCL after that PSG game.
- Gözübüyük dropped from UCL to UEL to UECL, and I am inclined to think that this is also performance related (even though I haven’t watched the games).
- I find Kružliak more difficult to fathom as he has been out for a while. I saw him at the beginning of the season as a potential candidate for the Conference League final (based on observers). The game involves an Italian team, so that’s a good sign. And to add, Ajax vs Lazio can be more loaded because Ajax has an Italian trainer (Farioli).
Finally, I think we can guess why it took so long before the referee team in Juventus-City was appointed; there is a lack of French VARs this week with Brisard having a match himself (and Bastien, Letexier and Turpin as well). In the end, they decided to give Letexier foreign VARs. It was probably a bit of a puzzle for the Refcom, with many active French refs and so many top games.
In the light of the recent events between Romania and Kosovo in Nations League, appointing an Albanian to referee a Romanian team should have been avoided.
DeleteAlso worth noticing that Marco Di Bello hasn't refereed any UEFA game since his mistake against the Romanian champions in Europa League on 24 October, when he disallowed a goal for a phantom foul in the match vs Glasgow Rangers.
Di Bello is about to leave the FIFA list but he can be a good VAR.
DeleteThese are totally different roles.
About the opportunity Romania - Albania after the recent facts involving Kosovo in Nations League, please consider how many things committee should take into account when making assignments, at a certain time it's absolutely impossible. They should do something like that for all teams, and you know there would be always a point for discussion.
I don't like such arguments because if you want to find anything, you will find always it... to say something against a referee.
Chefren,How dou youe evaluate the appointment, for John Brooks and Frank De Leckree?
ReplyDeleteFrank De Bleeckere :)
ReplyDeleteThe game is considered a good one for a young referee (1990 born) in development. TheEnglish has been recently promoted (six months ago) to Category 1 and now he has to gain experienced at that level. The Belgian observer is very often assigned to such matches, he can teach many things for referees who are eager to make progress.
The game is in my opinion seen as relatively calm, as it is always with a Swedish side at home. More focus on the Turkish team when the choice of referee was made, would have been different in case of game in Istanbul, Galatasaray home. I think committee doesn't expect a very challenging one, but surely it wont be easy.
Interesting fact that there is only one week between MD7 and MD8.
ReplyDelete2 x 18 UCL games. 36 different referees? Or is that too ambitious? ;-)
With some challenging fixtures in Europa League, some referees will do two games, is my guess. I wonder if the Refcom will appoint all games as a set or if they wait for ‘some’ MD7 results before conforming MD8.
Refcom will calculate which games are the most challenging to officiate.
In MD7-MD8 there will be games where both teams are happy to take a draw.
In my opinion the most challenging games are between teams that are “leaning in/out” (below #24). PSG-City screams Marciniak.
I think games between clubs that are battling for Top-8 are less “risky”, to a certain extent.
Very early to discuss about, but we can indeed say that the fixture definitely doesn't help committee. They never make appointments a week before for the following one, always avoided. But in this case it will be very particular, they couldn't know which games will be crucial while others not. I think basically they will do some choices, planning before the games about which they will be not surely "interested" (with the committee, that's absolutely the correct word), and then they will wait for the rest. Especially Italian teams if needed :)
DeleteThursday 23 - Friday 24 / 01 / 2025, very busy days in Nyon one can guess... differently from past seasons in which in that period there was the winter course (maybe this time it will be held after MD8).
DeleteAny info about Peljto performance yesterday?
ReplyDeleteTurkish Referee Committee has decided new FIFA referees for 2025. Abdülkadir Bitigen & Bahattin Şimşek is out of the list and Oğuzhan Çakır (1999, no relation with Cüneyt Çakır) and Mehmet Türkmen (1992) became the new FIFA referees. Cihan Aydın (1992) was expected but a mistake recently dropped him out of the list. Halil Umut Meler (1986), Arda Kardeşler (1988), Atilla Karaoğlan (1986), Zorbay Küçük (1992) and Kadir Sağlam (1986) remained at the list. I hope they will be successful and we don't see list changes for another 4-5 years.

Correct penalty by Brisard for a handball of the Olympiacos captain. During the penalty many lasers on the face of the penaltytaker. Nothing that Brisars can do about that but the UEFA must taken much harder action against it imo
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.me/v/ad93df23
DeleteVery good to spot this one live!
Imo opinion no penalty for Olympiacos. Var must have seen that the attacker puts his leg between the legs of the defender. Defender could not do anything about it.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.me/v/7604b459
DeleteExactly, attacker invading space of the defender, no foul by the latter. In this case, despite of contact, VAR has clear arguments for intervening, in serie A such penalties are removed because it's easy to explain why. Should be assessed as mistake by VAR to confirm it, I agree with you.
Siebert has just introduced RC to Matheus, from Braga. I just didn't have access to the image of the play that culminated in the expulsion.
ReplyDeletehttps://dubz.co/v/733d94
DeleteRC for Braga keeper by Siebert, handball outside the box, DOGSO.
ReplyDeleteOne could easily say that attacker, very close, kicked the ball exactly on the arm of keeper, but still, he took the risk with that action. Decision that must be supported by VAR. Would have been interesting to know what would have happened if YC by German referee.
Very similar to last night's Copa Argentina final. The referee considered that GK's hand was stuck to his body. There was no VAR. I'll try to find the video.

DeleteBoss, next week the last round of the Conference League will take place and the most important match will be Vitória de Guimarães x Fiorentina. Are there any predictions about who will be in the running for this match?
ReplyDeleteTerje Hauge is the observer appointed for the game.
DeleteShould mean a regular Elite referee.
I think we will see more Elite on next week in this competition, without EL and CL.
A name? Maybe Nyberg, after rather not very good times.
I expect more Elite referees in EL and "upper" 1st category referees in UCL
DeleteI think it's Nyberg, he has few appointments in this first part of the season (2 in the UCL and 1 in the UEL), but none in the UECL so far. And remember, he's always refereeing matches for Italian teams so Rosetti can keep an eye on him.
DeleteMissed 2nd clear YC by Treilanis in Lyon game.

How many stories has to tell Istvan Vad after 17 years as FIFA referee (2007!). Maybe we can't say he has been a big name of UEFA refereeing, but surely a more than well-known one to those who followed all the events from tha past to modern VAR era.
DeleteA very bad Kruzliak ... three yellow cards what wasnt yellow.
ReplyDeleteA lack of authority by this poor referee
New FIFA referees from Norway are Daniel Higraff and Marius Hansen Grøtta, replacing Sivert Amland and Kai Erik Steen.
ReplyDeleteGreat advantage by Scharer before the Tottenham goal
ReplyDeleteYour thoughts on the penalty not given by Kruzliak in the 45th minute?
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRIBGvxNqd8&ab_channel=ZiggoSport Starting minute 5:50 Imo a clear and obvious mistake
DeleteVideo not available. Will download the game soon to check the incident.
DeleteFound a way to record the clip.
Deletehttps://streambug.org/cv/40b696
In my opinion penalty to be confirmed only if whistled by Kruzliak. No VAR stuff. The main argument is that you can assess it was Ajax player going against the defender and not the contrary. Contact with heel, but not a particular movement by defender to justify a possible "one-sided" action.
I see it very differently. And you also have to take into account that Kruzliak did not have a good view of the incident.
DeleteBy the way, if you have the match footage, you should also watch the incident in minute 81. A Lazio player (Gigot) remained lying injured and when Kruzliak stopped the match during a Ajax attack and went to check, Gigot immediately stood up again. Kruzliak felt fooled and gave Gigot a yellow card (Not clear to me for spoiling the game or for the confrontaton afterwards)
81' https://streambug.org/cv/037948
DeleteIndeed a poor management in this case, I think that he had missed the player lying on ground, otherwise he would have stopped game before. Terrible scene for the referee when player stood up.
Disasterful officiating by Treimanis from start to finish on both sides. Consequently, the game went totally off the rails and the players ended up fighting.
ReplyDelete13 YCs and a RC, nothing new.
DeleteLack of authority is a recurring problem for the Latvian. I don’t understand why he gets UEL. Category1 on paper, but performances are not on a Cat1 level.
Thought Scharer was excellent and contributed to a great game in Glasgow. Great advantage for the Tottenham goal and good decision not to 2YC late on for the spurs player.
ReplyDeleteHere some clips from Peljto game Fenerbahçe - Athletic Bilbao.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that this was a very challenging game for the Bosnian referee, but all interesting happened surely at the end with a mass confrontation and a player (Amrabat) from Turkish team very frustrated. I think the referee could have managed this moment better, but about the rest, absolutely no issues. The win by Spanish side matured without any question in first half. Fenerbahçe totally unable to build something. UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin at stadium, extremely strict approach by Bosnian referee from the beginning, it looked like he was aware of the potentially hot nature of the game he was about to officiate. A couple of very good advantages, always good presence in the game.
7' YC reckless
https://streambug.org/cv/897773
The referee started with this YC. I think he realized later that the challenge could have been reckless, indeed you can see a very quick step on foot, enough to assess the decision at least as supportable.
57' - 69' The YCs to the player who was sent off
57' https://streambug.org/cv/ef1356
69' https://streambug.org/cv/0e3bb6
I think nothing to say about first one, mandatory YC, while second is an excellent spot. It was not easy to detect that reckless action from behind, soft contact but in my opinion OK to assess it as reckless.
80' YC for UB, delaying resrt of the game
https://streambug.org/cv/3497b7
In this clip you can also see how much referee was very active in the game, before the incident. Then I think correct and mandatory booking, other referees would have maybe warned or invited to go away the player (we saw something similar in some recent games, thank also to Euro Soccer Referee reports).
90' Possible YC for reckless
https://streambug.org/cv/9ed01f
Here the most important point for discussion in the performance, I think you should assess this one either as reckless if whistled foul. Hard to accept careless. The player was very agitated, maybe a card here would have avoided what a few seconds later. To add, the commentator said that player was already booked but this was a wrong information by broadcaster, he hadn't been booked before.
90' Mass confrontaton, management
https://streambug.org/cv/67357a
So, the Turkish player exploded against an opponent after a rather fair action (nothing significant had happened). Interesting to observe how the Bosnian tried to manage it, at first separating players, and this was good I think, at least as attempt, then he gave up, knowing that it was impossible to continue. Once all players calmed themselves, two YCs were issued.
I think this was rather an OK performance by Peljto but a YC in 89' would have been excellent to prevent what later.
Mourinho: very calm, never noticed, maybe this was also because somebody from Slovenia was watching from the stands....
