  1. Still many technical issues on uefa site about the release of appointments, never solved by years!

  2. Where is Kružliak?

And no Gozubuyuk, only one UCL game for him so far.

    1. after disaster performance in conference league heidenheim-chelsea, a well deserved "non-appointment" for gozubuyuk...

      Delete
  3. A lot of repetitions from MD5, actually all but Massa, Stieler and Kruashvili.

This also means an extended CL break for Nyberg, Schärer, Gözübüyük, Hernandez, Guida, Siebert, Eskas, Kruzliak and Grinfeeld.

Quite remarkable, that several First Group referees get a third game, but those Elite referees stay with one or two appointments.

  4. So Velasco Carballo switched on Petrescu. More or less we know now all names in contention for promotion. There have been many observations by committee members, one must say. Clearly more than the past, and unless surprises we should know who will get the Elite honor staring from next month. At moment the most questionable situation is for Obrenovic, who had that poor performance under the eyes of Rosetti, but knowing how committee worked in the years (very long time following a name, and if it must go, it will go...), well, we can expect him as Elite as well. Plus, this is a referee coming from the nation of a committee member.
About the rest, indeed many referees repeating from previous matchday and others seem to have left for a rather long time the Champions League. Philipp wrote a list, I think you can have explanations for most of the names, while for others it's not fully clear. Most unclear situation for me is the one involving Gozubuyuk who didn't make significant field mistakes, and Kruzliak as well.
Nevertheless I think we will see them in Europa League, very likely.
The mistake made by Scharer regarding his last penalty in Champions League seems to have caused big astonishment in committee. Same but maybe a bit less for Nyberg, as he got at least TOT - ROM in Europa League. Names like Siebert and Hernandez have been always used in a weird way, so we can consider also their management rather normal.
Another top game for Letexier and we can easily understand how much his performance in Liverpool was liked (no doubts).
Kabakov back in Champions League: I think that it's absolutely clear he deserved that. The Bulgarian recovered after a very poor period and now he will have his chances to be promoted, but maybe at the next updates and not now. It's good because he is a referee from a totally neutral country, in the meaning that at top level, he can officiate all games, differently from other referees.
Committee has always looked for such profiles (see Treimanis and so on). You can see that, despite of having had a Bulgarian VAR in recent times, for this one in CL Kabakov will get a foreign VAR crew.
This is how committee works: as long as they are not interested in a referee, but they have just to appoint him, no matter about the VAR. When they understand a path is possible and he can give more, a more "careful" assignment is made, with a selected VAR...
Very good path for Lukjančukas, nice observer for him in Madrid, a rather expected win for Atlético and maybe another easy duty for him, but you can' know before and you can't blame him so far for what he did recently.
Turpin as we predicted for Turin, here no risk, even in case of poor performance, nothing worrying for committee will happen, given the status of the French. Good strategy for them, but here could be discussion under a human point of view.
Stieler with a regular assignment, as well as Massa, I expect now Guida in Europa League or maybe even Conference. Second CL appearance for Kruashvili, hoping for him a better performance than the debut.
Jesus Gil Manzano always with Italian teams... this one is rather sub standard for him, but.. as said, Italian team involved and Milan is not Inter, this is a different match where the Serbian side can say definitely more in my opinion. Otherwise, take as example a possible Barcelona - Crvena Zvezda, committee would have made a totally different assignment, with even a Cat. 1 possible.
In the appointments of Italian clubs, there seems to be also an analysis (maybe added by Rosetti) about the current form of the team, and not only the name.

  5. Clément Turpin with a different AR this time as Benjamin Pagès got injured in the last Ligue 1 game a week ago.

  6. The spread of appointments this years has been quite astonishing with so many repeats as mentioned - Just totally unnecessary IMO!

    1. Michael Oliver with 4 appointments in a row and his 5th appointment already!

    2. I hope that these repetitions do not discourage some referees. Names like Nyberg, Eskas and Scharer are promising officials. The first two refereed the finals of the U-20 and U-2017 World Cups last year respectively, while the Swiss referee was in charge of the Super Cup in Warsaw. Motivation is an important value for the development of a referee in any continental and international competition.

      Delete
  7. The Rumšas/Lukjančukas situation reminds me of Eskas/Nyberg back then. A country (Lithuania) that apparently can have only one Elite spot and they don’t know who has the most potential. To add, demoting a referee is a sensitive issue in some countries, so they really have to be sure with Rumšas and Lukjančukas. The former is only 36 years old. The few times I saw Lukjančukas, I had the idea that he is a modern referee (the type of referee with a style that is “liked” by this Refcom…)

That said: how is it possible that Slovenia can have two Elite spots? I guess, the standard answer is politics. But this country has a low UEFA and FIFA ranking. Lower than Sweden, or did I miss something? To compare: two spots is the same as what Netherlands has as a limit.

Btw, if Rosetti takes himself seriously, Obrenovič won’t get promoted after the disgrace in Monaco. What is the purpose of such an observation, then? You might as well sit in front of your TV and sweep it under the carpet. But now, he was there in the stadium and everyone knows it. He will make himself look like a fool if Obrenovič will be promoted.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Actually, Rosetti 'made himself look like a fool' so many times that one more will not matter ;)

    2. Agreed, you are right. The Taylor-Germany-Spain case - about-face after two months; you can't get lower than that.

      Delete
    3. Not just Taylor. The disastrous management of top referees in general. The ultimate low was reached at tbe EUROs (2021 and 2024).

We can talk endlessly about specific cases.
      - Cakir (EURO 2021 and afterwards)
      - Makkelie (after PSG and ungoing)
      - Siebert (burned in that Atletico game, there were more sensible options available)
      - Marciniak (EURO 2024 - offended in front of his colleagues)
      - Taylor (after the Roma game - Rosetti hugged Mourinho?)
      - Favoritism of Italian- and Slovenian referees. Rosetti is not a strong leader unfortunately; he’s just Ceferins puppet.

      Delete
    4. This is my overall impression: In Rosetti's era the performances of the referees improved a lot, and it was not only thanks to the introduction of VAR. But the management was often questionable to say it mildly, and at the final tournaments it was a total disaster.
As it was not yet said, we can add:
      At Euro 2020:
      - overusing Brych in the KO stage
      - burning Lahoz in the last GS game while he recently had the UCL final
      - two Dutch referees in the semifinal and final
      At Euro 2024:
      - forgetting one of Scharer's AR has Portugiese roots
      - appointmenting Kovacs in the last GS game that influenced Hungary's qualification
      - sending Makkelie home for unknown reasons
      - sending Vinic straigth to the SF after a huge break
      - incredibly failing to offer Orsato a deserved farewell game
And I am sure that there is more. This one was just a quick memory exercise without even searching on web.

      Delete
    5. @matei14: I would not have appointed Zwayer for an England game either after his dispute with Bellingham a few years ago - I find it more than unwise that this took place in the semi-finals which meant that he was already in the crossfire of criticism before the match was even kicked off.

      Delete
    6. Agree.
And two English with the German national team in a row (R16 + QF), with Attwell twice behind the monitor.
Taylor in the big QF clash (ESP-GER) while his form had been poor the whole season.

  8. Maybe somebody among the names that we were expecting in Champions League will be here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_FIFA_Intercontinental_Cup
Given that there are three games in a rather short time (one week) in Qatar, it's possible that all the officials were selected together like for a tournament, but so far no information by our friends from Arbitro Internacional, not even for Wednesday game.
Kruzliak could be maybe an option... we'll see.

David Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable.

Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare.

    3. Interestingly, even after Coote was fired, Klopp did not lift a finger to sue him for defamation. The right thing to do for the German would be to do so. But there is a saying that goes: when ignorance speaks louder, intelligence is silent.

      Delete
    4. It always depends on the character of the people, for example if I were Klopp, I would not take any action. In the end, unfortunately, we can understand the reasons why Coote made those statements, for me it would be excessive even to be cruel against him. The English referee has already met his fate.

  10. Also - Dankert & Brand are the VAR team on Oliver's match
Van Boekel is AVAR on Vincic's match.
Still no AVAR on Taylor's match - I'm presuming Gillett with Banks as Jared also working as AVAR for Wednesday's match.

41' - Goal AVL disallowed for offside (AR2)
    https://streambug.org/cv/f5472c

58' - After VAR intervention, goal AVL disallowed for offside (AR1); technically, the advantage was quite poor and it was better to give a FK and issue a YC for SPA but fortunately for Mariani, Aston Villa managed to create a good attack - impossible to blame Giallatini as the offside was marginal
    https://streambug.org/cv/5e5834

61' - Good onside by AR2 at goal RBL

    90+3' https://streambug.org/cv/4917e5
    90+4' https://streambug.org/cv/189e4a

Zero tolerance of dissent - good YCs in 45' and 81' (here, the FK was indeed veeery soft). The YC in 79' came very late, with no clear reason (reckless, most likely). A couple of good advantages after offside in 75' and 87'. Apart from that, not a challenging game for the referee who succeeded with a rather laidback approach.

OK, no penalty in the end can see many people agree.
But... never, absolutely never clear and obvious mistake.
Do you expect all VARs taking same action here?
It's impossible, so what is the use of having VAR when there are always discretionary assessments? This can be more penalty than other situations in which VAR doesn't intervene.

      Delete
    4. Players have learnt how to cheat the VAR system. They see some referees get scared and start blowing the whistle for the slightest of reasons. Absurd penalties like yesterday's from Meler are becoming more common.

    3. 49' Was that a serious missed incident that should have led to an OFR? I'm seeing a lack of consistency this evening.
That foul is ok when whistled by the referee, but an intervention from the VAR booth is very questionable.

    4. Another VAR intervention I can't explain. It's strange because it seems that starting from today UEFA VARs have started to work differently. Maybe some advices by Rosetti after yesterday's games? Both decisions in Madrid and Lille wouldn't have occurred on past weeks, I'm sure.

  22. Poor timing and even mistake by AR2 in Kruashvili team, he raised flag for ball out during a promising attack. Very good that Georgian referee waited before whistling, then VAR checked and goal was allowed, but still... such situations must be avoided after so many years of VAR. I don't understand why for some assistant referees this is still so difficult.

    1. The most interesting thing is that – despite the flag of AR2 – on field decision seemed to be goal. Therefore it was not really an intervention by VAR, only a confirmation. Management and communication leave room for improvement, definitely... But players should also learn to play on until there is a whistle.

    3. Yes in the end no issues, Cassius, but there are always signals that something could go wrong regarding the VAR protocol, and this absolutely shouldn't happen after so many years... but yes, since we have some referees doing that in serie A every now and then, without waiting, maybe it's really hard to change the mind and to be always cool...

      Delete
    4. Yes, he raises the flag too early, that is a mistake. These things shouldn't happen.

But what I find even worse in this regard, is the fact that the AR tries to solve the issue himself by taking the flag down again without any communication with the ref. This caused even more confusion amongst YB-players and is simply inacceptable at this level. Once the flag is up it has to stay up, there is no way an AR can decide by himself to lower the flag again.

  29. What happened in Milan -Zvezda match?

I hear that Zvezda are saying that Gil Manzano was total disgrace.

  30. Im no Turpinfan, but today he showed why he is top 3 in Europe with his masterclass performance.

Match under control, all 3 bookings were fair, especially Bernardo's one was great were he isolated only him and showed him YC for unsportsmanlike behaviour.

  31. What about Milan’s second goal??? Silence??? Clear foul before corner kick, Spaniard acting blind! Clear foul at the goal line just before goal, pushing - again blind! These people have no shame! The same ref was 4 years ago and did the same thing! If there was the same situation in Milan PK area this would be foul 1000%! In this season at least 2, probably 3 CLEAR PK were not whistle for Red Star. Refs are destroying weaker team every time. Shameless.

    2. Although I don’t like the way you phrased the post, I don’t understand how there is not a single comment here about a clear foul on Milan 2nd goal

    4. I will try to give my opinion soon, didn't watch the game, but I heard about the controversial incidents, no time to make that so far. Let me also add that Lincoln comment should be deleted, I'm sorry but please change your words.

  32. Am I the only one who finds Stieler and his leadership very underrated?

It's hard to put into words, but compared to Zwayer and Siebert, Stieler brings a certain calmness and maturity to the pitch and it gives the players and viewers instantly the feeling that “everything will be alright”. Difficult to explain!

    1. Let's say that committee was not that much interested in that when they assessed him after Atalanta - Real Madrid, but still, after so many years, never a chance to come back despite of being always available and appointed is indeed without explanation. Even more when both Zwayer and Siebert had bad times... he was given some good games, but the new process to become nr. 1 never started.

  33. I unterstand well what you mean. as far as I know, Stieler has a masters degree in psychology. obviously he knows how to bring this knowledge into play.

  34. About the new FIFA list for Romania, as it was not said yet: Remarkably, at 48 yo, Vasile Marinescu is still confirmed for another year. In my opinion, he is the best AR from Romania, but I was expecting him to retire. Huge experience for him, he was AR1 for a very long time in Kovacs's team and helped him progress to the highest level. Understandably, the latter decided to change his ARs at the begining of the season to prepare for the 2026 WC and while Ovidiu Artene found his place with Marian Barbu and helped him in some good games for the latter, Vasile Marinescu was not really integrated in another trio. Anyway, the consolidated trios are: Kovacs-Marica-Tunyogi, Petrescu-Ghinguleac-Grigoriu, Fesnic-Avram-Cerei, Barbu-Artene-Bucsi. I can only guess that Marinescu was kept to help Kovacs Jr. in some games at the begining.

  35. Is a the new romanian FIFA referee Szabolcs Kovacs a relative of the more famous Istvan?
I'm surprised by the demotion of the norvegian Erik Steen; I guess some years ago he was considered as a very promising talent like as Saggi. What happened ?

    1. Szabolcs and Istvan are brothers

    2. And Szabolcs looks like a clone of István. Similar style of running, body language, lanyard, card showing procedure...

  36. Finally, I can manage to publish the incidents from Milan - Crvena Zvezda, thank to DrMr for having reported key minutes.

58' PAI, possible step on foot
    https://streambug.org/cv/a1aa1e
Correct decision to play on, no foul, maybe Gil Manzano assessed an action on the ball, but he took as well the correct decision. One must also say that from his position this was a rather very hard assessment. Absolutely correct NO VAR intervention.

67' Possible foul before 1-1 by Crvena Zvezda.
    https://streambug.org/cv/e0cc8c
I agree with commentator that this was a physical challenge, I find correct by VAR to support the referee decision, but an expected field decision in this case can be foul. Don't know which style the Spanish used in the game. It remains a possible foul but UEFA shoul be OK with no intervention.

87' Just one single video about the possible two fouls before goal by Milan. At first, before corner, then after corner.
    https://streambug.org/cv/4426b7
Hard to say about the situation before corner, I think we can only say Gil Manzano didn't see it, but maybe not enough for VAR. Then, in my opinion, clear foul before goal. Best replay 01:27 - 01:28 in the video, the defender is pushed to ground in a very "clever" (for attacker) manner. About VAR, it's always same problem, this action even if blatant for some aspects, can belong to the very grey area, upper contact, push. The intensity is not high but one must admit, attacker reached his goal. For me if Gil Manzano had rewatched situation, he would have annulled the goal, but I'm in trouble to say this was 100% something for VAR. Maybe I can just say a VAR intervention wouldn't have been a scandal, nevertheless when we talk about such incidents, it's more than hard to find consistency.

  37. Did Kruashvili do the right thing in assessing the goal scored in the 53rd minute? Did the ball leave the field? (stuttgart - young boys)
