  2. Good appointment for Nyberg. The most "open" game of the four in EL/ECL. Also good to see him appointed to Spanish & Italian teams, after featuring more often with English & German teams last season.

Reasonable trajectory would be to be a name for a final next season.

  3. Nyberg coming to this one as last game of the season. Committee seems to give us the signal about the Swedish that they are relatively content, but he could have got definitely more. With better performances in some cases, he would have been candidate for a final. But I agree in the end he needs still time for that and ECL semifinal is absolutely predictable end of season for him. Big game, crucial with an Italian and a Spanish team, as very often happens, Rosetti could be at stadium together with the appoint observer.
Into Pinheiro: always appointed with caution, extreme caution by committee.
Ok, in this case assignments made before first leg, but reading the game one could have easily expected such an outcome.
The Portuguese seems to be considered a rather good referee, but still not at the level for something very big. Remember also a rather useless assignment he got in CL, a Bayern game at home, in that occasion he could have definitely got more.
It looks also like committee doesn't want to accelerate the process and they are rather satisfied, with all he reached as for now. The importance of having a Portuguese Elite before all, then we will see how far he will go in future.

    1. I think this year was always going to be too early for Nyberg to get a final. I don't think the Benfica-Monaco game alone really changed much in the grand scheme of things.

Next season it's more realistic, assuming same level of performances, to see him in ECL or NL final - as well as WC selection.

    1. Absolutely in control of the game, total disciplinary control in a game with many flare-ups and rough challenges, having to show many yellow cards. He has been alert at all times including multiple fouls that occurred away from the ball that he and his team spotted. And he has a very strong personality which helped him manage the intense moments of this game. This was an excellent game and I really think Nyberg is right up there with Letexier as the top referees of the next generation.

  5. Good Nyberg so far. Not managing to avoid time waste in extra time. Let’s see the added time

  6. 3 minutes is definitely not enough. Injuries, substitutions, time wasting, should have been much more

  7. I read about a very good performance by Nyberg, couldn't watch in detail him. Among others things, correctly rejected two penalty area incidents.

  8. ACF FIORENTINA - REAL BETIS BALOMPIÉ

    Key Match Incidents:

19' FK leading to Goal BET
    https://streambug.org/cv/2a5771

    55' PAI, correctly rejected
    https://streambug.org/cv/b0e00a

73' UB vs VC; we know that it's a YC nowadays due to lack of intensity, most likely not spotted by officials
    https://streambug.org/cv/ec7d80

81' PAI, no replay but also no protests
    https://streambug.org/cv/1b528f

86' PAI handball; two handballs but none is punishable
    https://streambug.org/cv/31448d

104' PAI handball, open arm but the ball is deliberately played by the same player with his head, so no offence
    https://streambug.org/cv/21881a

Disciplinary Control and Management (it shows how hectic was the game):

I would point out the missed YCs in 14' (simulation by 2FIO), 73' (UB by 7BET and to both players during the subsequent conflict one minute later), 84' (UB by GK BET), 90' (SPA by 8FIO if whistled), 90+2' (reckless challenge on GK by 11BET) and in 113' to bench FIO but the overall game control and management was really good. Nyberg likes to allow a certain level of hard play but he is always present in key incidents stamping his authority with natural charisma and good feeling.

    1. Thanks for this very detailed report.
One must say that it was definitely a good performance by Nyberg, better than his previous appearances in rather "easier" games. This was a very challenging one. All OK regarding penalty area incidents, the one in 55' rather tricky in my opinion, could have easily called a wrong foul. Good assessments of the handballs to follow.
A day in the past the action in 73' was a clear RC, you can read the intention by player to hit opponent and this can be enough, but today this approach has changed. A player is entitled to deliberately hurt opponent if he feels he is disturbing him (ironical mode on...). Very had to spot for the officials, too quick and isolated. But I can only wish that VAR was rather disappointed to see but not to intervene (UEFA guidelines about that were correctly applied).
About the disciplinary control, for sure a Nyberg with more cards than his previous games, and in my opinion he should look more for this style, even in games that can be less challenging than this one. Still, some occasions in which he could have booked, but for some of the cases you mentioned, you can find explanations. Examples: in 84' he was already busy with the situation and the behavior by keeper was something "more", hard to punish accordingly, in 113' the game was really tense and in a crucial moment, in 90' maybe SPA but let's say a 85% - 90% SPA, 90'+2 hard to see because a reckless challenge on keeper is not expected.
14' a clear simulation but luckily after that there was offside.
Nevertheless you can see in some cases he tried to allow game without stopping it and I think that's reason why sometimes he can miss something.
Bonus offsides: for me, in the first case it's rather a missed offside position by AR2, he would have raised flag, attacker trying to kick ball so close to another defender and keeper, even if he didn't get ball, he surely interfered. But the complex scenario didn't help in the assessment.
The second case can be a correct decision, on a long ball, the player was clearly in offside, but ball remained too far away to think that he could have interfered with somebody in terms of offside. It's OK to stay down with flag, I think.
So in the end a good Nyberg also because players accepted him and it was nice game to be watcherd, elegant style with advantages. I can strongly wish the next season he can do better with that potential, trying to leave this kind of "Nordic" mentality that has stopped in past, in my opinion, many referees coming from those countries from getting more in hot UEFA games.
