It seems like the racism can be only "one-sided". One side is always a victim, and another one is always "guilty", no matter what really happened.

And I want to ask the anonymous user- if the ref from Africa would be insulted by European player, you will say the same?

    2. Yes I agree, and even the PK is doubtful.
Sorry for yesterday BTW, I didn’t mean what I said.

      Delete
    3. That was a save not a deliberate touch. Why do you whistle offside when one player shot the ball, goalkeeper saves the ball but a player in offside position scores afterwards. This is exactly the same...

      Delete
    4. I don’t know, it was a deliberate action anyway, and not sure whether this is a "save" or not. Interesting situation.

      Delete
    5. @WCReferee, generally saves of goalkeepers are deliberate as well to avoid a goal. But we whistle as offside when a player in offside position scores in return of a goalkeeper save. I support decision of Makkelie, however penalty should be rewarded by OFR not as a decision of VAR.

      Delete
    6. @Ugur B Yes I know, but usually saves are made on the line, perhaps another player could’ve intervened, to be rewatched. But I will trust VAR on this, I don’t have the answer.
Makkelie would’ve whistled PK, he made the advantage signal after the goal, no OFR needed IMO.

      Delete
    7. I didn't realize that he made advantage sign, so you are right OFR not required as he is aware of the position.

      Delete
    8. In my opinion this is not save but deliberate play by goalkeeper. We can discuss about a "save" after a shot on goal. It’s very difficult situation, of course but if we have possibility to watch replays we can easly see that there is not any shot on goal and Neymar is making dribbling and goalkeeper kicked the ball as he wanted. This is not factual decision and OFR is required.

      Delete
  8. It flicked off Neymar's standing leg after it was played by the goalkeeper before it got to the player who eventually scored the goal.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Video of the incident in Makkelie's game.
    https://streamable.com/4f0za4

At first we must say this is a clear offside, the touch by keeper is a save, it can't be considered as deliberate play, so offside by attacker's temmate. Difficult for assistant referee to see it.
Then, the signal of advantage by Makkelie shows us that he had already detected the foul. So, VAR detected offside and for this reason Makkelie returned to "previous" decision. The foul by keeper is clear, 00:52 he hit attacker before ball.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am not so sure, about the save vs deliberate play point. I would have said, that a "save" can only happen after a shot on goal. But borderline in this case. I actually would have preferred an OFR for the offside decision.

Then, the point, that Makkelie already detected the foul indeed means
      1) it needs to be a clear and obvious error for the VAR to change it / recommend an OFR
      2) An OFR for this decision is not required

But maybe overall an OFR still would have been wiser given the complexity of the whole situation.

      Delete
    2. In general very good decision by Makiele , but I prefer OFR, because it is not a factual offside, but more interpretation and whole situation complicated and only Ref must decide. But excellent explanation to players from the Makiele and in the end correct decision.

      Delete
    3. It is impossible to assess this action by keeper as deliberate play in my opinion, with the empty goal behind him and trying to reach the ball, what else it could be?

      Delete
    4. For me no OFR is needed as the keeper saves try’s to save the ball. If it was a player it is more of an interpatation, but when the keeper try to stop the ball close go goal it can’t be considered as anything else then an atempt to save the ball

      Delete
    5. @chefren, it's not impossible as empty goal is no parameter and his trying to reach the ball is actually THAT reason why it's actually a deliberate playing of the ball. A safe requires at least a moving ball towards the goal which simply wasn't there.

      Delete
  10. Why didn't Makkelie book Crivelli for kicking the ball? Now Crivelli is booked again, imo he should be sent off

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He kicked the ball at Makkelie but barely missed him! That should have been a card, maybe even red.

    2. By "modern" player friendly referee standards, it's not a Red Card.

Exactly, Anonymous! There are no real arguments to support it. Bumping into an opponent's back is a foul, charging. Simple as that!

  17. Wrongly disallowed goal by AR2 in Midtjylland (wrong offside call), but goal cancelled for handball by the attacker.
Correct decision in the end, but I think an OFR was needed.

  18. Mostly good impression by Del Cerro for me, but his two crucial decisions aren't in line with each other. A lot of (possible) fouls were not punished, which is fine. In line with that, no penalty is supportable for me. However, such a cheap second YC is definitely not in line with that and therefore for me a crucial mistake.

What a beautiful and powerful show of unity against any and all forms of racism, hate, bigotry, and homophobia. I tip my cap to the referee team for taking part and showing solidarity with the affected teams. Thank you referee team for sending the message that is more important to stand up against racial injustice than it is to always blindly "back the badge".
More of this and none of what we saw and heard yesterday.

    6. Referee analyst,
If you truly feel that way. Then you should take a stand and make something happen. But you obviously don't care enough about it. You're simply trying justify one action by using another "supposed" issue to deflect and distract.

      Delete
    7. Did you see the ball clearly kicked by a Turkish player toward Makkelie around min. 60? What did Makkelie do about it? A handshake...

      Delete
    8. Are you surprised? If you are, why?
      Because I'm not surprised.
It's the "modern" and "expected" way of officiating nowadays. Winning hearts and minds through exhaustive, endless, and ineffective dialog. It's no longer about Red & Yellow Cards.

      Delete
    9. That was shocking! I am surprised people do not react. Even after the Tuesday incidents, it is still not OK for an top referee not to have a strong reaction after a player clearly kicked the ball at him. What example is that?

      Delete
    10. It's the example that "modern" player friendly world football is setting. Everything is being done from The Laws of the Game perspective to reduce the instances where cards must be shown. The referee unfortunately are the being victimized because their hands are being tied by counterproductive directives and expectations.

      1. Push is exaggerated.
      2. Movement of the hand is deliberate.

    2. My views:

68' - it is hard to be sure what actually happens here.

If the Atalanta defender was simply running for the ball and the Ajax attacker, by stopping, prevented him from reaching the ball following that path - it is better to play on.

If the Atalanta defender realised that the Ajax attacker had a better path to reach the ball, and then unfairly charged to prevent him from doing that - a penalty should be given.

CORRECT non-intervention by Martínez Munuera for UEFA in any case.

79' - given that the ball wasn't really in Ajax no.8's possession and the swinging nature of the strike, correct decision to issue a SYC, even if one can argue about how "reckless" it really was.

del Cerro was actually too close to properly assess the incident, by the way.

    2. It would be a clear RC if the attacker was stopped immediately by defender's action. It is understandable that Vincic decided to give a YC as the attacker did not fall down and was able to continue playing for a bit. So, intensity is the main point here. But I agree, if the defender had stopped the attacker with a tackle like this, everything would have been clear as there was no chance to play the ball and the player knew it.

    2. i have read this here and there on this blog, and i need a little update: many commentators here refer to uefa president ceferin and insinuate an active interference in appointments and promotions or demotions. how can i find out this is really the case? i even tend to say that some commentators "overinterprete" some appointments etc...trust me, at the moment not even i would want to change with anybody who is doing appointments...it must be a super-duper puzzle for rosetti and his staff at the moment...and i think also they are very happy they got the major job done...40 matches per week in three days...travelbans, positive results, etc...

    3. Mikael, not sure I understood what did you want to say by that? From the videos, it seems that Vincic made different decisions on similar (but not identical) fouls, but how do those decision relate to Ceferin and his influence?

    4. c. EURO 2016, after Čeferin's intervention, UEFA adopted the modern FIFA refereeing approach. Before then UEFA had actually rejected the WC 2014 optic.

Also it's an open secret that Čeferin tried to block Vinčić's progress but that's another matter.

    5. I invite you to present evidence for the last statement, otherwise I suggest you refrain yourself from posting such heavy "claims".

    6. If Ceferin indeed wanted to block Vincic, he could have done it easily after the big scandal that happened this summer... but instead he returned quickly to Champions League. This does not look as "blocking" at all.

    8. I think it's common practice not to publish private sources, of course you can choose to believe me or not.

Čeferin was paranoid about this article, part of which suggested he lobbied for Slovenian referees and ridiculously mentions Šajn as a beneficiary of him. To save his face, he influenced some refereeing decisions which should have been put of his remit.

With time, Čeferin has become more relaxed, and indeed now doesn't really see Slovenian referees as a 'threat' to his credibility. But that wasn't always the case.

  37. Thanks for your good job for refereeing Chefren and co, and sorry to be sometimes arrogant and perhaps excessive. But here is a tweet from Demba Ba (things in this world aren’t simple and we need to be intelligent in our perception from some people) « welcome to the West where white people think they are so superior that racism and debility become commonplace ». No comment needed.

    1. So now all white people are racist? I have to say that these kind of outcomes and incidents take away all the hard work that's been done combating racism: you cant take this seriously anymore.

  38. Kralovec probably retired after suspension in czech league due to telephone contact with husband of Damkova "Roman Berber", which is now in prison, before final match in MOL Cup.

CONMEBOL has followed the unneeded have your own referee badge design trend that UEFA started. IMO, these "invented" referee badges minimize the hard work, long hours, and achievements of referees who attain their FIFA Badge.

  42. So: for you Hategan will be out of UEFA EURO referees' list?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I cant imagine that situation, he wasnt the one who was accused of anything, neither were his ARs. The problem could be IMO only in latter stages, where this so called "incident" could subconsciously influence his chances. But that is only my opinion.

      Delete
    2. IMO, he clearly should still be on the list (and getting CL appointments until then).
I don't know, whether UEFA handles it that way, but I am rather optimistic.

    3. He definitely should be there, but we all know that UEFA would do everything needed for their public image...

  43. Makkelie told on Dutch radio after the game about how he got appointed. He couldn't talk about the game itself (makes sense as Uefa policy, especially so shortly after it), but told about the appointment. He was on the reserve list and was the go-to person for the referee department. Also Diks was on there, so they both were tested. Steegstra was not, so that's why Makkelie didn't officiate with both his normal ARs. For Uefa the option to ask a ref/AR from the game in Rennes was the quickest option then, as no flight had to be arranged.

    1. thank you jan, valuable information. and thats why i always write: it is super tough to do the appointments these days...if you think about travel restrictions, positive tests, and that we only have 10% of the flights at the moment...this must be aboslutely terrible...

  44. Update about Královec - he is probably going to retire from refereeing. Now.

An article written by arguably the most knowledgable Czech journalist when it comes to football diplomacy and politics claims that Královec was intended to retire from refereeing with the end of this calender year and become the new co-head of Czech refereeing together with an international official nominated by UEFA since UEFA seems to insist on nominating its own person leading the Czech refereeing committee after what happenned with Roman Berbr and Dagmar Damková. It might change after the suspicion of match fixing (what actually happenned was that Berbr called Královec before the last final of the Czech cup Slovan Liberec-Sparta Praha and told him that he needs a political thing from him - to greet Sparta's secretary and a former referees committee member Josef Krula, to which Královec answered "I understand."). He should have been appointed as co-head of the committee on Wednesday (9/12), but it did not happen, possibly in light of the above mentioned information published on Tuesday (8/12), the vote about the new committee did not happen at all.

Either way, it seems obvious that Královec's place in Elite for spring will be free. His delegation for Chelsea-Krasnodar (8/12) now looks like a farewell game on the night before he would announce quitting refereeing and becoming the co-head of Czech refereeing. The delegation was made by UEFA referees committee, i.e. the same people who are reported to nominate the other new co-head of Czech refereeing, possibly one of its own members.

Anyway, the important news for us observing european refereeing - Královec seems to be history as a UEFA referee, regardless of what happens with his current accusation.

  45. I have big respect for mr Rosetti, mr Dallas and mr Sayijn, the ref com. They have a difficult job. You see that they are busy with the future. UEFA need new referees. New talents. If we see the Elite list, for me only, Kuipers (no 1 in the world), Skomina, Brych, Cakir, Lahozz are big refs. Of course Taylor, Makkelie also. But if you see the Elite list, I think 7-10 are ready in very short time to change. Most will stopped because of age, but more names as I read here many times are not Elite ref!! Why waiting with the future, put some new young refs. OK maybe step by step, but don't wait. For me Massa, Gozubuyukk, Ekberg, Stieler, Jovanovic, Treimanis are ready. They all whistle CL games, and did very well.
