  1. Uefa referee committee considers Befinca Arsenal as a Champions League Match. That's right: I fully agree. Good match in my opinion for Schaerer and Kruzliak; expected Frappart

  2. Interesting appointments!

What stands out to me - the big observers are out assessing 1st Cat. referees, and not potential EURO candidates.

Karasëv (Tulinger), Kružliak (Podeschi), Sidirópoulos (Einwaller) - one could infer, then that whether these referees will attend the EURO, or not, has already been determined by the committee.

    1. Also - wasn't Kulbakou rejected by the Austrian authorities in the group stage, and now he is specially appointed fourth official there :D

  3. Wow, the mixture of teams here is quite never seen before, but quite expected because of VAR in Europa league, very difficult to maintain a high sense of same compatriot all round

    ReplyDelete
  4. Big game for Schärer under Rosetti's eyes. I have big expectations for the Swiss.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Rosetti observing again after Barcelona - PSG. Schärer gets a good match.

Important observer for Ekberg too on a quite open match.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Are the var officials also in the stadium or in a var center?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think most of the time they're at the stadium in a TV truck but I remember in the last round they had a couple VAR teams at UEFA HQ in Nyon due to travel restrictions.

    2. I don't know whether some of this games will be covered with a remote VAR, I can just point out that Irrati worked as VAR sunday evening in serie A Inter - Lazio (in Milan), then today he should be in Hungary for Vincic (as said, if not from remote) and on Thursday again in Italy (Rome) for Benfica - Arsenal. Let's see whether we will get more info, being appointed three times as VAR in 6 days is something like a record.

  7. Big test for Schärer under the eyes of Rosetti, after today's observation in Spain for Kuipers, he will fly home and then he will watch the Swiss in Turin. To follow, very important game for Ekberg as well, it seems as committee is not still 100% convinced about his promotion, this can be another test. To be honest, I don't remember a so long focus on a referee by commitee that lasted so much time.
The game in Rome is considered like a Champions League one, and I agree, so we have Cakir. However, one could say that CL is still CL and Cakir finds himself again out from the major competition, but for sure in case of good game he will get more sonorous appointments.
The reputation of Cakir in front of committee in recent times seems to be very weird.
There are some fourth officials coming from countries without VAR (if I'm not wrong), like Glova (SVK) and Nyberg (SWE), while in othe cases (Gestranius, Treimanis, Kabakov) this has been "fixed" by UEFA. So, how to explain it? For sure there can be COVID issues and we could have replacements, but sending an Italian fourth official in Ukraine just because the referee is from a country without VAR is quite particular. Different choices in terms of fourth officials to be selected could have been made.
Stéphanie Frappart continues her journey, in my opinion she got of the least sonorous games with a very low technical level of at least one of the teams involved.
Spasjonnikovs is back in Treimanis team, with VAR it will be easier, in case, to correct mistakes. Basically, however, a very good news.
Letexier gaining experience in a KO game.
Hategan at moment appears only as fourth official (this is also because he can use VAR with Kovacs), but I'm curious whether he wioll get a game with Sovre on next weeks. UEFA investigation could take a long time, so what to do?
Last but not least, what UEFA wants to do with names like Karasev and Sidiropoulos regarding EURO continues to be a big mystery.
Mikael is in my opinion fully right, one can assume they don't need to make detailed observations, they already know those referees, so a decision has been already made. In case of call for the tournament, this would be very, very undeserve

    1. Glova and Nyberg do have EL experience, right? At least with Glova I am sure of that. The Finnish officials for example don't have that, if I am right. maybe that's a reason?

    2. Both the names Rik mentioned passed the UEFA VAR course if I remember correctly.

Attwell and Tierney very lucky then to be allowed to travel.

    3. Scots team was expecting to go to France (Lille) this week but as UK on red list, was unable to travel.

  12. Dutch cup
    sc Heerenveen - Feyenoord
Referee Siemen Mulder / VAR Martin van den Kerkhof

Heerenveen's penalty is saved the keeper and the Heerenveen's player who picked up the rebound shot, but the early invading Feyenoord's player blocked it. The referee ordered the penalty to redone because the keeper was away early, but was canceled by VAR's intervention.
    https://streamable.com/h53swy

The question is whether players who invade in early should be punished for VAR intervention in this case.

    Siemen Mulder:
"I still find that a bit difficult for now. He (early invading player ) does not immediately take the rebound. The ball first reaches another player. He only gets involved in the game in the second instance."

"I still have to discuss this. In the sense of: if the VAR looks back whether the keeper comes off his line too early, does he have to take that too? Normally not, but because he is now doing a review, maybe not. I don't know now, to be honest."

Any opinions about this punishment? End of the chances for Euro 2020 or next matchces perhaps in Europa League?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I really dislike this public announcements by such federations, this doesn't help the growth of referees, in particular Marián Ružbarský is UEFA observer and he should defend his compatriot. The chances to see him at EURO were very low, now I would say almost inexistent. It is difficult to reach the high level when you have such treatment domestically.

      Delete
    2. At first, it's a scandalous punishment for the incident that was not as black-and-white as was made by Slovak media (and refereeing people).

Such significant suspensions are something typical for both Czech Republic and Slovakia. To be honest, I didn't see such actions in any other European league. I'm a fan of referees facing punishments for either extremely bad performance (such as Jakubik in Polish league: two bad decisions after OFR in one game, both against one team; he didn't get a game for three consecutive matchdays now) or continous bad performances but not such ban for one or two ordinary mistakes.

Indeed, "he will referee only second league in Slovakia until the end of the season" seems to drastically reduce his EURO chances.

      Delete
    3. I am ashamed and shocked about this disgraceful punishment and especially about the highly unprofessional way of dealing with the situation by the federation, especially when you take into consideration that the decision wasn't that bad (at first, I even thought, he was correct, later on I still thought, the decision would be supportable).

      Delete
    4. We had the similar situation in Croatia: Zebec, Pajac and Matoc were suspended until further notice. Then Referees Committee was dismissed and Referee Comissioner for Croatian First League Ivan Novak canceled suspension given by Committee.

      Delete
    5. I agree with all of you. I am a young Slovak referee, who started a career 3 years ago, but this approach by committee is disgrace. Yes, it was a mistake that led to different result as should be. But this punishment is a big shame. And it is not for the first time in Slovakia. Tell me, how can young referees find any motivation when they see this kind of approach in our leagues?

Punishment yes, but not this way.

      Delete
    6. Much more appropriate punishment would be that in the following 6 games he is only appointed in 2nd league, and then he starts to be appointed normally.

If he made a mistake on purpose, then it should be life-long ban. If not, then you dont let your best referee suffer that way and lose trust of public and UEFA maybe. Sad decision.

  20. Very clear penalty whistled by Sidiropoulos to Crvena Zvezda for a blatant handball.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Now 59' - penalty to Milan.
In my opinion very soft, but no VAR stuff.
Rewatching it, Sidiropoulos wouldn't have whistled.
      Very easy fall.

      Delete
    2. Minute 70' YC Mandzukic, mandatory decision, very malicious movements with elbows, even twice, to be checked carefully...

      Delete
    3. Second YC to Crvena Zvezda can be discussed as well.
To add, in the early minutes of first half (I didn't watch full game) VAR intervention for handball before another goal and it was then disallowed. A few earlier a correct offside call by AR confirmed by VAR, annulling a goal. Game full of crucial incidents, the only very clear decision was penalty to Crvena Zvezda.

      Delete
    4. Now missed offside before the corner, that leads to the 2-2, I think.

      Delete
  21. Correct 2nd YC by Istvan Kovacs in Braga - Roma.

  22. Wrong offside by AR2 in RSO-MUN, ball was slightly ahead of attacker's foot. Correct VAR intervention.

If we could check out the picture above, it is clear that UEFA still counts handball not from the short sleeve but from the shoulder as opposed to what we see for example in the EPL, so what do IFAB recommend because I am really confused right now

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The jersey has nothing to do with where to assess a handball. That's just what some people think. Handball is arm and hand, shoulder is not. And everybody knows where a shoulder is. Just do a lateral dumbell exercise and you see where the shoulder ends.

      Delete
    2. Clearly anonymous hasn't seen the diagram released by IFAB defining handball.

    3. Exactly, the there is a diagram defining where the “hand” can be penalized for.

  26. Missed 2yc or maybe straight red by Ekberg minute 91 for the clipmakers

    ReplyDelete
  27. Expected level from Schärer in RSO-MUN. Quite lenient approach fully understandable as the game wasn't either challenging or agitated. Possible room for 1/2 more YC, but no big deal or mandatory one missed. Good evening for the Swiss.

  28. Ekberg spitted after final whistle. Not elegant for a top referee.

    1. Meh, some refs chew gum. That looks much worse.

  29. Cakir's new look is unusual... :)

    1. I'm really shocked. Did not even recognize him.

      Delete
    2. Same. I saw a picture; f I had not been told it was Cakir, I never would have guessed it was him.

      Delete
    3. He looks like a mini Collina!

      Delete
  30. If that was Ekberg's final test before a possible promotion, I am sorry but he didn't pass it.

The match was technically an easy one and the referee showed convincing body language and had control. But his disciplinary approach was poor.

First at min. 68' N6 of PSV (already on a YC from 31') should have been sent-off. He fouls his opponent on a late and reckless manner. Ekberg only gave the free-kick.

At min. 90+1 N24 of Olympiakos (already on a YC from 62') fouls his opponent and stops a promising attack in front of AR2. We can discuss a potential DOGSO (even though, IMO, it's a case of SPA) but the referee and AR2 waive play-on. Clear foul and a 2YC missed.

I always rated Ekberg and still am but his performance today is not of an Elite referee.

  31. SC BRAGA v AS ROMA

    KMI:
37' - goal ROM correctly disallowed due to offside
50' - penalty area incident: Roger Ibañez (ROM) impedes progress of Šporar (BRA)?
54' - 2nd YC/RC Ricardo Esgaio (BRA) for reckless use of arm, fully correct
60' - goal ROM correctly disallowed due to tight offside, well done AR2
63' - penalty area incident: Nuno Sequeira (BRA) kicks the ball into his own arm

    Others:
    68', 76' (77') - missed fouls (and YC(s))?

If someone is going to make clips, please include the two warnings issued between 14' and 16' to Galeno (BRA) for exaggerating contacts in order to win free kicks - great management there!

  32. Several incredible mistakes in Belgrade. First of all, penalty for Milan. it is clear dive. There is one angle from behind where is so obvious that player fell all alone and after that Red Star player put his arm on him. Incredible that VAR didn't react. Second, elbow from Mandzukic at least had to be reviewed by Sidiropoulos. Right elbow, then left elbow - for me more RC. Elbow used as a weapon. Third, RC to Rodic. He didn't see the player at all, very debatable decision. Also, I think that that player was offside. Finally, corner before goal - it was offside. So several very crucial mistakes, for me the biggest one non existing PK for Milan.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Both penalties were correct decision, at least supportive. The second yellow was also a correct decision. I have not seen the other 2 incidents; handball or the yellow card for elbowing. Offside before a corner kick is a very minor error. With Clattenburg, unlike the previous situation with Pereira, Sidiropoulos are getting good games every week; and there is a clear improvement in his foul detection and body language. Has he become as good as Kuipers, Orsato, Cakir etc. No..But he is more experienced and more reliable than many others who are presented as strong candidates for the next Euro , for example Vincic , Kruzliak etc. Vincic's foul detection, man management and discipline on an easy game on Tuesday was not good enough.

      Delete
    2. Wrong penalty to Milan. Two meter offside missed before the corner kick (not a minor error). Missed RC for Mandzukic. Second YC better not to be given. Vincic and Kruzliak are much better referees overall than Sidiropoulos.

  33. Penalty by Treimanis: contact on the line? Very interesting situation, VAR took some moments to confirm it.

  36. Not that much convincing performance by Sergei Karasev in Granada - Napoli.

First YC to Elmas was easy and correct - clear shirt pulling.
Second YC for Di Lorenzo IMO too harsh. For me only a contact between to players nothing more. Could be rewatched.
Third YC to Granada Player was correct, a clear stamp on the foot.

Around 36' clear YC for a tactical foul missed for Granada player.

Some minor problems in foul detection and some smaller fouls missed.

    3. Although it’s actually not really a penalty to me as well, there definitely was a movement of the leg towards the attacker. So I share Chefren’s idea that the intervention is questionable.

      Delete
    4. Quite soft IMO, but no need for VAR to intervene, as you can still back referee there.

      Delete
    5. Lots of talk about this one... for me the penalty call is correct. He trips at least the right leg of the attacker, maybe you can say the attacker was already going down, but that definitely sent him down even more. And let's not overlook the fact that, from the available angles that I've seen, it looks like the reason the attacker was going down in the first place is because the trip hit his left leg first. I think Kruzliak made the correct decision by sticking with his initial call.

      Delete
    6. ... not to mention the clear push in the back with an extended arm at the same time. The more I look at this play, the clearer of a penalty it seems to be.

      Delete
    7. I think it is not a PK. Similiar to Saka on sunday (vs. Cooper), I don't like strikers draging their leg along the floor to initiate contact. Harry Kane is also quite 'good' at this. Not easy to spot in real time though.

  43. Strange OFR in Lille, to be honest, I think VAR was wrong in calling Kruzliak, there wasn't any evidence of a clear mistake.

    2. +1 Fully agree with Anonymous. As a Dutch Ajax-supporter too, I must say this decision was absolutely wrong. No penalty. If this isn't clear-and-obvious-VAR-material, than what is? I feel sorry for Kruzliak, first the suspension in his home nation, now an unimpressive performance in EL. He was incredibly nitpicky during a match that really needed a referee able to keep some tempo and flow in the match. The YC at 90+5 for simulation was probably correct, but more a penalty than the whistled penalty.

      Delete
    3. That's a disgraceful penalty. Completely agree with anonymous here. Ajax player looking for the leg and diving into it. I would even consider a YC for simulation here. Perfect OFR and Kruzliak completely wrong imo here.

  49. Well, maybe an unpopular opinion, but a great night for Kružliak and his team.

Let's start with the PK. Right on the first shot of OFR you can see a clear push by the defender later made stronger by the trip. Good PK in my opinion and a wrong call for OFR.

AR2 with a bad offside call in the 1st half, but 2 good fouls in the 2nd.

AR1 with a fantastic offside call in 65', shot off a post and then interfering with an opponent.

Kružliak was very consistent with YC and while had passages where he let two match go, he was always in control. Not to mention a fantastic diving call in 95'.

Overall very solid performance by the entire team and well handled only KMI of the match.

    AR2 - 8.3

    5. At 2:05 of the video DutchRef provided for us, you can see the clear push by the defender that puts the attacker off-balance. You can think the PK is debatable, but once called, there is no way you can call it a clear and obvious mistake and overturn it.

    6. There is no reason to whistle a penalty. Before this, it's a offense foul...
      Clear mistake...

      Delete
    7. JR, where do you see the offensive foul?

      Delete
    8. Offensive foul? I really see nothing that even comes close to an offensive foul in this video.
And considering the pushing movement of the defender’s arm the penalty at the very least is a supportable call IMO.

      Delete
    9. Tripping. The striker clearly causes the defender to fall (through his own action)

      Delete
    10. @JR That’s a highly unconventional opinion :) But even if one decides to consider it your way, still the push by the defender came before the leg contact.

      Delete
    11. I can not see any kind of pushing. There is an arm away from the body, but no push at all.

      Delete
    12. With respect to your opinions: That CAN'T be a PK!
No active movement by the defender. I'm not too sure about the OFR.
If he saw it that was himself, I would say: No OFR
If there is a difference between the pictures and his perception, then the OFR perfectly fits.

      Delete
    13. In my opinion, the touch by right arm makes this situation not VAR stuff, this was what I was watching yesterday. Then we can discuss about the penalty call, but never 100% wrong in my opinion. Also, we can't reasoning without knowing what exactly Kruzliak wanted to punish. However, VAR shouldn't have intervened.

      Delete
    14. I think: If Kruzliak wanted to punish e. g. the contact at the legs and did not realize the arm contact, the OFR would be justified, as he should have a look himself, if he consideres that as enough for a penalty.
If he saw the "foul" just as the pictures showed it, the OFR would be questionable, as it isn't clear and obvious.

Beside that, calling this minor contact a PK, is unbelievable. If he has the offer to have a look, he could easily reject it.

      Delete
    15. I mean, UEFA referees have called PKs like this the entire last year and I think one word describes this situation - JUSTIFIABLE. This the kind of 50/50 contacts, where it is up to a referee and I would be OK with both decisions. @Flip had an interesting point - if we are talking about the leg contact, that is not a PK in a milion years, the player was already falling when the contact was made. And if Kružliak saw only that, the OFR was correct. But if the point of the OFR was the arm contact (which seems more probable with the shot they chose), Kružliak was absolutely correct to stand by his decision. Because we cannot deny the contact is there and it pushes the player off-balance.

      Delete
    16. Interesting opinions, I would even go further: You could say it's a dive that should have been punished with an IDFK and a YC. On the video, you can clearly see that the attacker is trying to 'hook' with the foot, he wants to make contact with the defender in order to deceive the referee. As a result of this initiated contact, the attacker is already on his way to the ground. Yes, he gets a slight push that is too light for a PK and most importantly did not the reason for the fall. The fall, especially that he tries to 'get' a contact with his foot, looks very unnatural to me. Considering this, in my view the penalty decision can is not really supportable.

      Delete
    17. I strongly disagree with Ref_1707’s diving theory. In my opinion the attacker does not hook himself into defender’s leg. To the contrary, the slight push of defender makes the attacker off-balance (to the right), with the consequence that the leg swings to the left. Actually this looks a very natural natural fall to me.
Another element to highlight is the EXCELLENT position of Kruzliak to assess the challenge. Only point of discussion could be whether or not the push is considered enough for a penalty.
But from my perspective a clear mistake by the German VAR team to advise an OFR.

      Delete
    18. I finally just watched this incident for the first time and after examining it very closely it's definitely a penalty the push with the arm is enough to give it and for me OFR is wrong and unwarranted because to me once it's given there isn't enough evidence that it's a clear and obvious error

Starting from the beginning: very shocking to whistle foul without issuing any card! He should have perceived the (at least) reckless nature of the foul. This was very dangerous for the safety of opponent, and that's first thing.
Then, I agree with VAR, this looks to be deliberate, but he decided for YC.
I'm sorry to say that these are evident technical gaps, that wont allow the Latvian to reach Elite Category. Too many evident mistakes in his recent games.
I'm really sorry because he showed to have a great potential, but in front of such incidents... one can't defend him.

    7. I don’t think the OFR was wrong, we don’t know the discussion the referee and his VAR have and that is what makes an OFR necessary or not. If we take this for example, three is no way the referee would have seen the use of an arm from where he was positioned because it was on his blind side and clearly that was what Turpin was showing him. He would have told Turpin what he saw and Turpin would have said there is an angle where the arm of the defender makes contact with the attacker and clearly Letexier didn’t see that, hence that formed the basis of an OFR. OFR doesn’t just happen because the VAR decides it but it depends solely on their discussions

    4. Turpin is appointed in Ligue 1 on Sunday, so we won't see him in CL on Tuesday. Perhaps Wednesday, or EL.

    5. I think Monzul will not appointed in KO Stage because his difficult situation between Gent - Liberec.

    6. Agree with most of your prediction, but I think Hernandez Hernandez will not be in EL KO stage as a main referee. Also, Turpin and Hatagan are more likely in EL, and I would love to see Massa or Grinfeeld or Manzano in CL next week.

  63. I do not know if friends here watch EFL championship. Derby's disallowed goal was so ridiculous, but at the same time, I was not too surprised because 80% EFL championship referees are terrible

    1. Yes I saw it and totally agree. If Derby had fouled the Watford defender then in the same play you could justify a pk for the Watford player holding one of the Derby players shirt.
