  1. For some reasons, it seems as the officials in these games have been asked by UEFA to wear the Macron equipment with the UEFA badge as well.
Unless some exceptions in almost all games the referees wear UEFA.
That's really strange because these games are the same as Men's WC qualifiers.
The rivalry between UEFA and FIFA has maybe a new chapter now.

  2. Finally, FIFA will hold new seminars and we will know the officially pre-selected referees for the next World Cup, the seminars will take place in November in Doha. The first confirmed is November 1-5 for AFC, CAF and CONCACAF referees. The African referees (8) have already been confirmed: Bakary Gassama (GAM), Janny Sikazwe (ZAM), Maguette N'Diaye (SEN), Ndala Ngambo (COD), Victor Gomes (RSA), Redouane Jiyed (MAR), Mustapha Ghorbal (ALG) and Bamlak Tessema (ETH). If you have information about the other confederations, please share it.

    1. A small correction, actually 1-5, are AFC, CAF and CONMEBOL, 26 referees, 8 AFC, 8 CAF and 10 CONMEBOL.

    2. Thanks for this update! Looking for further information from other confederations.

    3. Specially UEFA, I think we could see an update in the list to perhaps include Karasev and Siebert who were not planned 2 years ago.

  3. Please i need all referees in doha seminar for wc 2022

  4. Joao Félix sent off in Atlético-Athletic by Gil Manzano with 2 consecutive YCs, the second one for dissent (which I think it should have been a straight RC)

    Replies
    1. Should have been a straight RC! Unacceptable gesture, I can't understand how you can deem this as only YC.
The original decision can be wrong, but you can't react in this way against referee.

      Delete
    2. Gil Manzano has been at a very weak level for several seasons. The players do not respect him and he does not convey confidence. He is not at the level of a referee candidate for the World Cup. I hope he gets back in shape

      Delete
    3. What concerns me in this clip is Gil Manzano booked Joao Felix for reckless use of arms but didn't punish that blatant holding from the Bilbao's player with a YC for SPA (or he did and this is not shown on the clip)
You can even consider that the use of arms is only a careless one, given the fact the player is held by the shirt.

Then this dissent which has to be a RC, I can imagine the player saying "you're crazy" with the gesture, this is a straight sending off ! The referee got the whole situation quite wrong IMO.

I don't Gil Manzano will attend the WC while he has his compatriot Del Cerro being preselected, furthermore he is far from the top UEFA referees.
I've never been impressed by him in La Liga in recent years, he was a quite promising young referee when he made his debut but never really improved that much throughout the seasons, not having a great game who pushed up his career (again, unlike dek Cerro and his Cup Final in 2016).

    4. You are being very harsh with these comments. I disagree completely, although unfortunately I didnt watch this game.

1)Gil Manzano has just recently had very successful Copa exchange! Nobody mentions that and still you claim that he is in a bad form.

      2) His style is really pleasant to watch. I would say it reflects his very high level of education, he treats player in calm, respectful manner and tries to explain his decision and also prevent incidents.

3)I dont see so many blatant mistakes and wrong impressions as with DCG. If we compare those 2, I would definitely go for Gil Manzano. Extremely good fitness is not enough, as we could see this summer at EURO.

      Delete
    5. Agree with you forlan. Also the handling of that situation is correct in my opinion. Just the final whistle was in the worst moment I could imagine

      Delete
    6. I think that Gil Manzano makes two mistakes.

      1) Not giving a quick and easy YC to Athletic player for the holding, that could have prevented a strong dissent against the reckless arm YC. Atlético players don't have the feeling that justice is being served if only his player is carded after that action.

      2) Such disrespect is not dissent by action, but insulting the referee. Straight RC.

      Delete
    7. Completely agree, Quilava.

      Delete
    8. I can't understand what he said to the referee but if a player pointed at their head and said I was crazy I think a yellow card for Dissent would be enough.

      Delete
    9. I don't get it, what is so bad about the gesture that it has to be straight red card? Is this a cultural thing in Spain that I don't know about?

      Delete
    10. @smala017 I think it's a universal gesture to say 'you are crazy/insane/mentally ill'.

Stéphane Lannoy ejected Álvaro Arbeloa in a Galatasaray-Real Madrid CL game in 2013 for exactly the same gesture (although it was also 2YC)

  5. Chefren Who was the best referee in Spain in the history Garcia aranda or not ?

    ReplyDelete
  6. @Forlan, are you watching the match of Gozubuyuk? I really don't want to be right but again an OFR for Gozubuyuk’s in his match. Clear SFP with an open view for him. This isn’t a difficult decision. The second half is now starting. Hope he will recover.

  7. Did anyone (Mikael W?) watch West Ham - Man United?

3 possible pks on Ronaldo, Atkinson didnt whistle any, VAR didnt intervene. Also incredible dissent tolerated and ignored! Somewhat similar to Joao Felifx gesture the other day.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I only saw 2 of the 3 possible pk's you mentioned and I thought they should have been penalty's. Atkinson did not look like he had a good game.

      Delete
    2. @Jackson
I agree. And in the end very obvious handball, referees should not need OFR for that.

    3. It was a bad weekend for refereeing in the PL, many mistakes unfortunately.

  8. Some news from the Czech Republic re. FIFA referees.

Three (!) new referees will become FIFA from January 2022: Jan Machálek (1986), Tomáš Klíma (1988) and Jan Petřík (1992). They join Pavel Orel, Ondřej Berka and Ondřej Pechanec in the list.

These referees will replace Petr Ardeleanu, Pavel Rejzek and Miroslav Zelinka (Ardeleanu and Rejzek were removed even from the Czech 1st division list, while Zelinka will remain refereeing in Fortuna Liga and also in the VAR FIFA list, along with Pechanec, Berka, newcomer Klíma and non-FIFA Karel Hrubes)

After the Roman Berbr affaire, the new head of Czech referees is former FIFA referee Radek Příhoda (retired in 2018)

    ReplyDelete
  9. No problem Forlan. Second half no intervention, hahaha But a tough half because players don’t know when he whistle yes or no. For example, a clear pulling, the shirt was all torned. And in min. 49 again clear SFP but no intervention.

  10. I dont think I've ever seen more lenient red in Italy than Doveri.

Not even Mazzoleni was this lenient, I mean what Doveri is not punishing with cards is pretty ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. And now we get mass confrontation.

      Delete
    2. This has been Doveri's style in recent years when he started to get top games. Never issuing any single card. I really don't like that and I agree with you. We can't even talk about a lenient style, he deliberately avoids to issue cards for all reasons, unless very extra-ordinary situations, and indeed a confrontation happened and he had to start with booking, but this was the result of his approach in my opinion.
There are people who love this way of dealing with the game, but in my opinion just whistling fouls without issuing cards is not real refereeing.
However in Italy, when there aren't big troubles, as it is so far in this game, nobody cares about that. The important thing is to keep game under control.

      Delete
    3. And now 3 added minutes...

Sorry but I dont like this style, awful for my eyes.

      Delete
    4. Wow, 29 fouls and not a single card.

      Delete
    5. That's not even full picture.

Dirty fouls, stamps, reckless challenges, SPA's,arguments and only 2 MANDATORY CARDS were shown.

    1. IMO a controversial penalty decision in favor of PSG in 63’. Neymar and Gusto were challenging for the ball, Neymar pulling the shirt and putting his other arm around defender’s neck. Gusto is off balance, falls and in his fall touches Neymar’s foot. Turpin decided for a penalty while I think a defensive FK should have been awarded.

    2. Also, very orange card to Di Maria in opening minutes.

  12. I didn't watch the West Ham vs. Manchester United game yesterday, but I was curious about the big incidents having read some reports etc, so from a live commentary I grabbed the minutes and clips are below.

    69' - https://streamable.com/6sb5u2
    77' - https://streamable.com/nmqbbj
    85' - https://streamable.com/zmn935
    +91' - https://streamable.com/q27vri
    +92' - https://streamable.com/4tbezm

    ---

    My views:

69' - what an EXCELLENT decision by Martin Atkinson, despite the impression that the attacker was simply tackled down in the penalty area, actually he deliberately 'screened' the defender in order to allow the ball to reach his teammate; the Englishman used all his experience there, well done.

77' - a less well-executed Ortega and Stam :)); caution for simulation would be a hard sell, but the most correct decision IMO.

85' - clear holding of the attacker's arm, so the base decision should be penalty; perception of an exaggerated fall, attacker not reaching the ball anyway, and the theatre of decisions involving CR7 - these were surely the reasons that the (V)MOs cleared this situation.

+91' - attacker can see the defender is about to slide in so he toes the ball forward, away from his possession, in order that he can get taken out and win a penalty, so Atkinson's instinct was right; however, I guess that most people simply expect a penalty here?

+92' - crystal clear penalty; assistant Richard West should have seen it live, but faced the same issues as Carlos Pastrana in WC 2010's PARESP QF: 1) he was probably too close; 2) he wasn't cognitively ready/expecting this scene; 3) he lacked the courage to take a huge call. Of course, correct intervention from Darren England, and the right outcome reached.

    1. Thank you very much for collecting the clips!
69' IMO not an excellent decision, my prefered decision would be play on. In such situations the ref should wait a bit, imagine a goal being scored.
77' IMO a PK, but maybe there is ground for no intervention, as the path Ronaldo takes can seem a bit unnatural. But Coufal is commited, puts his leg ound and doesn't get the ball, so for a 'normal fan' this looks very much a PK
85' I find it very hard to make a decision, how much Ronaldo was held back. The points you mentioned Mikael should not really matter though, if he is holding him back strong enough.
91' I actually think noPK can be supported here, as Ronaldo goes down early. But I think at this point, too much has gone against him, so maybe people are not quite as objective. Is he 'allowed' to go down a bit earlier to protect himself?
      92' Clear handball offense

Thanks again for the clips, really appreciate it :)

    2. @Mikael W
Tnx a lot for the clips and analysis.

I find it extremely interesting to watch mr. Atkinson, he often seems like has his own LOTG which noone really knows.

As you said, 91' is IMO standard penalty. For 1st and 2nd situation one can argue about lack of evidence of clear and obvious error, but in this case denying a foul is very unusual. Sometimes we have an impression that 2 times borderline situation influences a referee to whistle the 2nd one, but in this case I would almost say its the opposite. Atkinson tolerated CR incredible dissent, but he simply didnt want to whistle anything not completely mandatory, so CR looked quite powerless in the end.

    https://streamable.com/wukzqt

-> Great work by Brych's ARs Borsch and Lupp who faced numerous offside/onside situations and got them mostly right. The disallowed goal after OFR caused quite a lot discussions, so Brych explained his decision in TV:
"On the pitch, it looked like a foul to me. My impression was that the KOE player (white) hindered the RBL player (black) in his attempted clearance. But in front of the monitor, I saw that the KOE player was earlier in the duel and the RBL player hit the KOE player slightly due to the backswing of his leg. Therefore, we can maximally talk about a contact, but not about a foul - the goal had to count."

    2. 54' is actually a very interesting situation. People from Germany seem to prefer no-Foul (I did some research). But I personally think it is a foul by Uth. Most germans accept though, that it was not a clear and obvious error and that VAR should not have intervened.

  19. Not a new thing but it looks so ridiculous in La Liga when referees pull out the red and yellow card any time they are going to give a player a card. I don't understand how or why they can do this at such a level. You never know what card the ref is going to show.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't like this either, therefore there is a lot less referees who carry both cards with a paper sheet in the same pocket in La Liga, only the "old school" referees still do so.
The trend is to keep cards in two different short pockets.

Dutch referees also often carry both cards in the same pocket, but with a black notebook, more elegant IMO.

I think this is only useful where you have a 'orange card' challenge and where you wait to see the severity of the challenge before showing the card, it sends the "I'm going to take action", and allows you to make your mind up.
Otherwise it's just not an efficient method, as a spectator you are always forced to wait for the ref to raise his card to be sure of the color.

      Delete
    2. @VG I guess that you say this after watching either González Fuertes or Jaime Latre in recent Real Madrid/Barça games.

Having YC-RC-paper in the same pocket is the traditional Spanish style and, believe me, until like 5-6 years ago I'd say 80-90% of ESP referees used that card-showing procedure, the exceptions being some of FIFA referees who separated and put the RC in the other shirt pocket.

Since 5 years ago (maybe because of the double velcro in 2016 Adidas shirts collection?) there has been a massive switch to having cards separated and mostly in shorts pockets to the point that at least in LaLiga and professional categories 'traditionalists' have become a minority (see referees like Hernández Hernández, Martínez Munuera, De Burgos Bengoetxea, Sánchez Martínez or Mateu Lahoz, in 2015 they had their cards in shirt pockets either all together or separated), though most referees still keep the YC-RC-paper set in their shirt pockets just to write down the match incidents (it's still quite rare to find a referee in ESP who writes down in the card itself, like Del Cerro Grande)

Personally I prefer separated cards and I actually keep my YC in the left shorts pocket, because then I know which card will a referee show just based on which pocket is introducing his hand in, but I don't see why is that ridiculous, just respect.

Actually, there are some foreign referees who used to keep their cards in the same pocket, specially Dutch (Rosetti, Baldassi, Bujsaim, Vink, Kuipers until ¿2012?, now Makkelie) but always using a notepad. Notepads are kinda rare in Spain.

  25. I watched Ukraine's Super Cup last night handled by 33y/o non-FIFA referee Andrij Kovalenko [VAR: Aranovs’kyj].

There were a couple of theoretical KMIs of note (two reckless vs. SFP scenes, clips below), but in general I was quite impressed by Kovalenko's work, especially given his relative inexperience.

The strongest asset of this referee was his presence and personality - the way he dealt with dissent and mobbing especially was genuinely world class(!). He was visibly at ease dealing with and controlling these top players in a huge game in Ukraine.

When you understand the whole context of being post-Soviet country referee and debuting in Klasychne derby, you realise quite how impressive that is.

However, I would urge him to always keep a tight grip on his emotions - having cautioned the Shakhtar coach at 80', his anger looked more visceral than controlled.

Tactically, I thought Kovalenko was basically spot on with his approach; as he had to, he acted as a law-enforcer in this game, and only missed one tactically valuable caution, at 37'.

The combination of missing that yellow and an unfortunate scene where a Dynamo player unsportingly didn't give the ball back at a throw-in, meant that the 1H ended a bit on edge, but Kovalenko kept enough of a hand on everything to see it through to HT.

In a sum, I think we can say that Andrij Kovalenko is a talent. His slightly lazy style plus his (quite rare nowadays) big personality reminds me of the Spanish ref Jorge Figueroa Vázquez.

So long as Kovalenko has everything in order - fitness, English ability, right side of the bad FFU politics etc. - I think that he will be added to the FIFA list in 2022.

It is not fair to name names, but I think he is more able than definitely a couple of Ukraine's current international squad members. I watch Kovalenko's progress keenly hereafter!

43' clear YC. Actually, I think for UEFA this is YC6 and they want a VARint if RC is given. If this makes sense or not is another thing, but in the recent RAP A20 is exactly that - and it is considered as YC6. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

79' Here definitely more severe than 43' I would guess Borderline, but therefore probably just about no VARint - as the contact is still on the foot and not higher. Very dangerous still.

Last Wednesday, VAR van Boekel advised Allard Lindhout a red card. Allard Lindhout also gave this after an OFR. After this red card in min. 36 it became very nervous and aggressive from the stands. The game was temporarily suspended just after half-time. It wasn’t a red card, the player landed unfortunately on the foot and could nowhere else put his foot. Today the red card has been dismissed and the player in question can play against Ajax tomorrow. Pol van Boekel will referee that match. A lot of pressure on his shoulders.

The behavior of the coach is also remarkable. Today he continues and attacks the referee, VAR and especially the boss of the referees. Just read that this is already the second red card that has been dismissed by the disciplinary committee this season in the Netherlands. About the OFR’s they wrote, the most interventions were in the matches of Gozubuyuk. (2 missed red cards and 2 wrong offsides in 4 matches he whistled)

  31. Refereeing highlights of Manchester United vs. West Ham on Wednesday evening. Jon Moss handled this EFL Cup tie.

    Big Decisions:

12' - potential penalty (holding) to Manchester United
13' - potential penalty (charging/striking) to Man Utd
+46' - potential penalty (challenge) to Man Utd
58' - potential red card to Man Utd no.31 (violent conduct)
67' - reckless or SFP by Man Utd no.31?
77' - potential penalty to Man Utd (handling)
    +94' - dropped ball management

    1. I see it like that:

12' - blatant holding, mandatory penalty to be given (VAR intervention required)
13' - very borderline, I would call it 55-45 penalty; the ball is not played by GK but the contact with head looks more careless than reckless for me (no VAR intervention)
45' - no penalty, defender does everything to avoid hurting his opponent, he stops and doesn't perform any action (and it should be reckless to call it after the shot has been made)
58' - violent conduct; I know that modernists require ultra-high force to be used in such cases but what else we should get to issue a red card if there is a) clear bad intention, b) action is successfully performed? (VAR intervention required)
67' - borderline for UEFA and here I agree, the force used was not excessive and the contact is borderline, more reckless than SFP then (no VAR intervention if a RC is shown)
77' - of course no penalty

  32. Strong performance by Michael Oliver this afternoon in the top PL match Chelsea vs. Manchester City; the first half was pretty easy-going for the English Elite referee, but in a pretty intense second, Oliver responded well.

Foul recognition was very good, use of disciplinary sanctions was really intelligent, and two penalty appeals correctly turned away (66’, +94’). Oliver jumped well in one conflict scene where he might have thought shouting from a distance was enough (21’), but was a bit more fortunate another scene didn’t boil over (51’).

I would like to see repeatedly dissenting/mobbing Chelsea player cautioned for that, but rather peanuts in the end. Michael Oliver again showed his worth in delivering the biggest PL games for PGMOL today, well done.

    1. I also thought he had a good game. He was more animated than I remember him, using gestures. Once he showed everyone that it was not a handball, because it was actively played by the knee. Maybe he is trying to be more public in his communication? Some people think his style is a bit too easy going, but not today IMO.

    2. I agree it was a strong performance in an entertaining game. Though I wasn't so much a fan of this more 'animated' style. If felt kinda hectic and I wasn't always reassured about how calm Oliver was. It was interesting to watch though, to be honest at one point I thought Oliver must have been subbed off when he was jumping around at one point.

  34. Has anyone watched Maresca in Inter-Atalanta?

I saw only crazy last 15 minutes. What a crazy period! TV commentator was so annoying complaining all the time how Maresca performs badly and wants all the attention. Were YC in 1H correct? Any impressions?

    1. In my opinion superb performance by Maresca in a wonderful game (I suggest you to watch it in full), exactly the contrary if we compare Doveri's style in Juventus - Milan.
He immediately started with YCs without any warning in first half, pure refereeing.
      4' step on foot (reckless)
      12' holding
      19' SPA
21' dissent (I can't question but maybe this was the only decision of first half he could have "managed")
      43' late challenge, reckless
      64' holding
      70' rekless challenge
      90' dissent

Full control of a very hot game.
      Crucial decision:

85' penalty to Inter for handball, quite delayed whistle by Maresca, I don't know whether he got some advice from AR2, however still an excellent spot for the potenmtially decisive moment of the game. The fact that he had whistled penalty from the pitch was not clear because he was surrounded by many players and he didn't go close to penalty spot, but the decision itself is superb.

90' disallowed goal because ball was out before, and so game resumed with corner kick. In particular this was the first VAR intervention in serie A atfter 23 games, the longest record without any single intervention in VAR era, two full matchdays + 1 or 2 games more without any single correction, not even for offside. Excellent start for Rocchi.

Now, regarding your statement, that's indeed the question. You can love or not Maresca, but he just "officiates games", without any management / closed eye and so on.
Modern concept of refereeing doesn't agree with that, but believe me, it was fascinating to watch such a performance this evening.

    2. @Forlan,then you have watched the match on Arena Sport . :D
Same commentator was complaining some day abot Doveri's performance and how he is allowing dirty match without cautioning anyone, now he is complaining because there were too many cautions.

IMO,one of the better performances from ref in recent times, every booking was spot on,no crucial mistakes and yes ,he was focal point of the match maybe, but imo beacuse he handled the match pretty well.

    2. Don't understand what the player said, but based on the gesture, 2YCs were perfectly shown for dissent

  37. Genoa - Verona 3-2 by Mattia Destro scored with a bottle in his hand, he was drinking close to benches when he suddenly got the ball.
No contact with other players, I think goal should be regular also for common sense.
