Jarred Gillet (Australia) is VAR for Paul Tierney according to UEFA. I thought Jarred had to lose his FIFA badge when he left Australia.
ReplyDeleteHe did. He no longer has his FIFA badge but is probably one of the most experienced in the use of VAR in the world having been part of the initial experimentation when Australia became one of the very first leagues in the World to use VAR.

DeleteSo, to reply to Known - no, in my eyes it is not important really at all. But I recalled that PGMOL sh*t the bed after this game, and while the whole project was a disaster, they didn't appoint him as VAR for the whole rest of that season after this(!). Ridiculous.
But Dominik's data shows that last season they appointed him regularly as a VMO so my fear that he'd only worked a small number of games in the role (because of this suspension, hence why I brought it up) was misplaced.
Yeah keeping track of VAR appointments is indeed quite difficult...

You can filter through the seasons and Referee/VAR appointments.
I just went with what they had in there for the 19/20 season as it seemed quite balanced and included pretty much all matchdays but who knows really... Could be way off.
For the 20/21 one, I went through all PL appointments as there was pretty much nothing on transfermarkt and just searched via CRTL+F :D Yup, took 10 minutes but I was really curious :D
Btw I don't know much about the Arsenal v. Crystal Palace match but it doesn't seem like he was suspended after that. He was VAR the next matchday and was appointed as VAR for the rest of the season but I really don't know.
I was thinking about keeping a personal database for VAR for a while now, I think I'm gonna do it now for this season and onwards.
Slightly off topic but could Gillett actually go on FIFA list in January - normally have to be second January after debut in top division but not if renominated. England ‘finally’ have enough refs to fill their 10 slots without him after an embarrassing period of drought (could Gillett be an 11th as an UEFA exception?). Seems a shame to waste his experience?

ReplyDeleteIt becomes immediately obvious that the referees department were not really ready for the political decision to implement VAR for these games after the incidents last March.
Fedayi San - who correct me if I'm wrong was never even considered safe enough to be AVAR for Schärer in CL/EL - is now lead VAR for the Swiss referee. Same with the Czech VARs.
I guess Čeferin (understandably) doesn't really care about a VAR mess in a Pot 4 vs Pot 6 game, compared to a missed goal in SRBPOR. But I do think that UEFA have really risked quite a lot here.
To clarify - that's nothing against San who I think is a very good referee, though I'm not familiar with his VAR work at home.

To say it directly, there are surely specific choices by UEFA and FIFA regarding VAR assignment. While in some games we have VARs who never worked in UEFA games (like the Swiss), in other ones we have different choice. Valeri VAR with a Slovenian AVAR for what sounds a big match on paper is the example of that.

Hmmmm - I would say that PORIRL and FRABIH are basically the same level of prestige. The question is of necessity surely. Slovenia's VAR project debuted this season, if I recall correctly? ISR, CZE, SUI officials are all much more experienced with the system.

But some match needs to be the first international match for any VAR. So it's unavoidable, that there are some debuts in the WC qualifiers and/or the EL group stage. I think, it's understandable to rather do it in these competitions than in CL.

Otherwise Dennis Higler would never be there after two rather disastrous performances in the Dutch league. I hope he will surprise us with a good performance in Torshavn but if he brings his Dutch league form we can probably prepare for quite some controversy there.

DeleteI didn't see FC Utrecht - Feyenoord yesterday, so I can't judge about that match. But I think Higler's performance in FC Twente - Ajax was actually pretty good.
It started as a really tense match, but he managed it very well with two pretty early correct YC's, which calmed things down. He didn't make any important mistakes and was completely in control.
I heard FC Utrecht - Feyenoord was chaotic, but - as I said - I didn't see anything of the match
Higler's foul detection in Enschede was terrible. Besides, he missed a crystal clear red card in that game. Yesterday, his foul detection was again not good + he had to be corrected two times for giving ghost penalties.

Excellent cautions by Rumšas - I would highlight 41' especially as a brilliant call. DeleteHowever I have some sympathy for it. As it is indeed really hard to determine, it seems sensible to let the referee take that critical decision - especially if the referee had a wrong perception (e.g. of a clearer foot contact).
Once at the monitor, it's understandable, that Jug took so much time as the different perspectives gave different impressions on whether the foot or the ball was touched first / at all.
As there is an angle, where a decisive touch on the foot seems quite likely, it is correct IMO to stay with the penalty decision.
The CR7 incident lacks intensity for a VC, I think. If the referee completely missed it, an OFR for a missed incident was still possible, but not necessary IMO.
DeleteRegarding the first part of your answer - let's also remember that these are FIFA games, WC qualifiers. So the "conflict" between FIFA and UEFA about how to use VAR could be the reason behind such intervention! I don't know whether in such games Rosetti & Co. give guidelines for VAR, or it is something managed directly by FIFA. In the second case, we would have an answer about Valeri's call: in line with what we saw at Olympics... but surely the confusion about VAR and this dualism don't help in looking for consistency.

ReplyDeleteThe foul detection is not the best indeed. But even more serious was no disciplinary sanctions after those two fouls in 10' and 11' I mentioned above. If the fourth official is not able to help in 10'... But we also must mention positives: correct YCs for holding (18', 25') and reckless scissor tackle (43'). Also good warning to Depay for UB after whistle (33').
DeleteIt's hard to say but his choice of teammates is not the best. Listkiewicz who openly says that he doesn't like Paweł Gil in social media (shocking and highy unprofessional, like watching Olympics on smartphone when being AVAR...) or Musiał who is after a one-year break (lyme disease) and never presented high level both domestically and internationally.
2nd yellow for simulation for Cyprus. He certainly tried to sell a PK, but there was also some contact on his foot which to me makes the simulation yellow harsh.

ReplyDeleteI like it. Those challenges that go through an opponent and pin their ankle to the ground can cause major ligament damage and often go under punished.
DeleteA RC can certainly be justified (high intensity and danger), but I don't think, the YC was a clear and obvious mistake.

DeleteI disagree Philipp. This is a 9/10 on UEFA scale for me. The lunge at high speed directly into the opponent. The lead leg is high with knee locked and studs exposed and the rest of his body/trail leg goes directly into the opponent taking out both legs with excessive force and endangers the opponents safety by pinning his ankle under the force of his challenge.

DeleteI would highly praise the VAR for that correct decision. We cannot justify YCs for such dangerous attacks because there may be some doubts that it's 100% clear. The FRA player jumps into the opponent dynamically and with high intensity without a real chance to play the ball. The BOS player's leg buckles severely.

I'd urge you (and anyone else) to watch this again. I'm seeing one of the most sophisticated and successful dives I've ever seen.
Delete#16 starts to drag his right toe prior to any contact--FAR prior.
He then flicks his left leg outward into the tackling player to ensure contact in the hamstring region.
Look, it's a silly challenge. So I don't have a ton of sympathy for the defender. At the same time, in no way whatsoever is his tackle what brings the attacker down. The attacker could have easily hurdled or went around this challenge. I completely understand why the defender protested in the manner he did, while his teammates probably felt it was a stonewall penalty.
Very particular incident, indeed. In my view, I share usaref view, attacker had in mind to simulate before any contact with defender, and he started to fall down without any contact (this is clearly visible in the first replays), then there is for sure at least a touch by defender with that tackle on the other leg when attacker is already falling down, VAR had to support for this reason. We can draw conclusion that attacker was lucky he could "mask" the simulation.

ReplyDeleteA shot on goal is deflected by the defender with the arm and the ball comes to a player who has a OGSO and is in an offside position. After the delayed flag, the referee gives a free kick for the handball.
In the LotG, we have this quote
"A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball, including by deliberate handball, is not considered to have gained an advantage, unless it was a deliberate save by any opponent."
So if the handball was deliberate, it could not be offside afterwards.
However I think, the decision still can be supported, because the handball doesn't have to be deliberate - "unnaturally bigger" is sufficient.
But I am interested in other opinions on that.
I think the simpler answer is that this was a deflection and a save. Personally I don't think this is a handball offense, but you open up an interesting point. I guess it's a lot like a player scoring with their arm. We need to decide how accidental it was to whether we issue the yellow.
DeleteThe handball must be deliberate or the offside will still be active. It's 100% clear in the laws of the game what they mean so don't misunderstand it. Unnatural position is absolutely not sufficient and will not cancel the offside at all.

To be honest, i was not impressed by Marciniak at all tonight! Seen him far better! Missed a lot of minor fouls, and i'm sure iff this match was more intense he would have lost control totally, a lot of late whistles, and control was there because off the good behavior of the players, not because Marciniak was there.

DeleteIn my opinion this is penalty but referee should have whistled it on the pitch. No VAR stuff because, despite of being evident, it is always a question about intensity of the charge and VARA is ruled out. It should be assessed as mistake by referee.
