    Big match for Gil Manzano, congratulation; Rosetti is preparing the day after Mateu (and Del Cerro).
    Good match also for Zwayer, after a long period under the shadow.
    I'm very surprized by the assignment of Brych; low profile match for his experience and his level. Probably he is considered very close to the end. Important observer for Meler, crucial test for his future

      Yes, I agree. Good match also for Kabakov, I rather expected an Elite referee there.
      For group F, maybe they just wanted to test Zwayer in a high-profile match again - not neccessary for Brych, of course. And Atalanta-Bern still is quite important and possibly a tight match. Or they still want to avoid Brych and Ronaldo to meet again...

    Very important test for Ulut Meler with Šajn. The TUrkish referee will officiate his second CL GS game, after the debut he made one year ago.
    Zwayer back in an interesting match, happy for him. I still think he paid definitely too much his poor period, if compared to other Elite referees. Let's see whether he can continue on this good path.
    About Brych, I think Rosetti took the opportunity to appoint him in a very important game for the group, the names are not sonorous but there is an Italian team so you know this is treated in a particular way. Turpin, another big name, had Atalanta on MD1.
    The fact that two Category 1 have been assigned to a fully open group can be surely surprising, but, most important both games have been treated in the same manner.
    I expected Orsato and Guida together, maybe in the same group, and this happened. Extremely important Benfica - Barcelona, considering also the form of the Spanish team, while Bayern - Dynamo looks to be a quite easy match to handle. I think that Guida reached the maximum with such regular assignments in CL as experienced Cat. 1 referee and nothing more. I agree on that. Among Italian VARs, we don't see Di Bello after the controversial (in my opinion) decisions on previous Matchday. Let's see whether he will appear tomorrow as VAR in EL, I doubt. Hategan has been invited in Nyon as well, he needs to do practice with VAR, still incredible that Romanis can't offer this chance to their referees domestically.
    Big match for Gil Manzano in Juventus group, taking a look at previous results on MD1, the group shouldn't show any surprise, with the Italian and the English team qualifying for KO stage, but still a good assignment for the Spanish.
    Sidiropoulos back in CL with a normal assignment for him, while we don't see Kruzliak, at moment I think the only available Elite referee out from CL since a quite long time. Hopefully he recovered after the difficult period of some months ago, we will see him I think on Thursday in EL.

    Can I ask, why do Italian referees make so many permanent changes to their ARs? Orsato has changed AR every single season for the past 3 seasons I think. We saw the same thing with Rocchi, he certainly changed his ARs a number of times and I think Rizzoli as well.

      There have been fixed trios for Italian Elite referees in recent times, but differently from other nations, indeed, there have been very often changes. I think this is basically because there are several good assistant referees and AIA wanted to give to all of them a chance. In addition, we can say that having at moment only Orsato as Elite referee gives not so many chances to all assistant referees to get such important games, so this is another reason for which Preti, Giallatini, Meli and Carbone, among the others, very often are switched.
      Now I was curious to see this appointment because it can be maybe read as the first step of 2022 World Cup preselection, with Orsato candidate, but it doesn't look the case because I don't think we will see Giallatini (1975 born) in Qatar.
      Preti (1978) is out for some reasons. We will know more based on next assignments. Among other things, there have been an appeal by a former Italian assistant referee who had been dismissed at the end of previous season for technical reasons. He made an appeal against AIA and he won, he has been readmitted in serie A and B panel and he is already getting game (Giuseppe Macaddino). Among the arguments he used to win the appeal, it was declared that AIA shouldn't have confirmed the 45+ aged assistant referees on their panel because the rules they wrote were against that. So this means that the 45+ assistant referees must leave at the end of this season. For this reason, Giallatini can't be guessed in Qatar.

    Good match for Gil Manzano. Spain will need a referee for UEFA Euro 2024 and WC 2026.

    Also a good appointment for Zwayer. I think that the spot for N2 of Germany is still open.

    Kabakov with an interesting match. Like in MD1 it seems that the committee is looking for the new Elite referees. Surely the Bulgarian had a difficult time but can still prove his abilities.

    Expected appointments for Brych and Orsato.

    Low profile match for Sidiropoulos. This match could easily go to a First Group referee. Btw Sidiropoulos did something incredible yesterday on his SL match Lamia - Panetolikos. Before the start of the 2nd half he removed his earpiece of the intercom and gave it to Lamias' captain in order to speak to VAR Papadopoulos. Unbelievable.....

      Indeed it would be interesting to know more, I guess he did that because the player was too much annoying with protests for something happened in first half?
      However, if you do that at UEFA level, it is over.
      Sidiropoulos must be very careful, but surely he is aware of that!

    Sidiropoulos had a decent game in Scotland last month. He deserves one last chance to show if he can maintain his status or not. In my opinion, Europa league suits him more than champions league;less pressure and less intensity. Unfortunately, it is clear that Papapetrou has not managed to earn the trust of the committee. Diamantopoulos appears to be given a lot of games recently; he is, in my opinion, the best greek referee, but age wise he does not have chances of getting promoted. I hope Fotias does well in the u17 qualifiers and gets promoted to category 2 this summer. He is young , a linguist and works for NASA. He has the profile of a referee that can be part of EURO 2028 or 2032.

    Sad news from Slovakia. In my local 7th division, a young referee was brutally attacked by 2 players. One charged him and hit him in the head and the other one kicked him in the head while he was lying on the ground. Just a disgusting behaviour that is unfortunately get a bit too common...

      Clear DOGSO, mandatory intervention, without handball attacker would have had a chance to score, running alone in penalty area, 100% sure. Reason for wrong YC issued by Sidiropulos can be indeed that he thought player was too far, but in this scenario RC is evident.

    Penalty to Salzburg, I think this tackle by defender is mostly on the ball, I wouldn't penalize it, however, after the ball, opponent is slightly touched as well. This penalty would be removed in Italy.

      Very long OFR and many troubles for Ulut Meler. Players didn't want to accept his decision, more than 5 minutes have passed. He confirmed his call afer the OFR, there was another analysis on a possible foul before the penalty, but he didn't change idea.
      In my opinion wrong penalty.

      Good and brave decision not to overrule himself. Not a clear mistake to whistle that penalty, because the defender touches the leg a little earlier than the ball. But if penalty is given, maybe we have to talk about DOGSO and RC?

      Wow. I'm very surprised by the apparent conclusion here. Seems very clear to me that some contact comes before any touch of the ball. I think it's a penalty (the question of a prior foul is different) and can't believe Kalkavan send that down for review. It put Meler in a very difficult situation. An overturned penalty should be--no, needs to be--clear. This isn't clear at all.

      As for DOGSO, it's a leg tackle and attempt to play the ball. That's DOGSO-yellow, which was given. Not red.

      For me the penalty is correct/supportable, because there was a contact with the opponent's leg before the ball was played.
      If Meler completely missed the ball contact, the OFR might be sensible, because he had based his decision on a wrong perception. Otherwise the OFR for the foul would be wrong.
      Regarding the possible foul in the APP, I didn't see a wrong movement by the attacker - the defender seemed to cause the small contact himself. Therefore no clear foul and no reason for an OFR IMO. However, if the referee is already in the review area, it could be sensible to show him this scene as well.
      So for me the final decision (including YC) is correct, the OFR is a bit doubtful (but depends on the referee's perception).
      And yes, he lacked authority after the OFR to ensure a quicker execution of the penalty.

    38' challenge in Wolfsburg is worth looking at if anyone can get a clip made. No fouled called. Very dangerous and late challenge on the attacker who was crossing the ball.

      It was definitely a clear yellow card AND FOUL that was missed.

      I think we have to start asking ourselves the question of if these type of fouls should be more. He lunges and arrives late. He has no real opportunity to get the ball as the contact is well after the cross is made. He crashes into one of the opponent's leg and pins it up against the other leg, putting an immense amount of pressure on the legs of a player who cannot brace for the impact. And it looks like a serious injury could have resulted.

      Why don't we want to be punishing tackles like that with red cards?

      Yes, good job by Manzano. This is a fan comment, not a refereeing one, but Chelsea look lifeless, like they did against Manchester City recently. They were playing fast football last season, with their forwards making darting runs behind the defensive lines, but Lukaku is a mostly a hold up player, so I don't think it will be a good fit. Let's see.

    I really don' understand why it seems to difficult for the officials to take note of time to be added. Fourth official can easily do that.
    In this case, a minimum of 5 minutes had to be added.

      The first replay shows it best. The defender's right knee hits the attackers right leg, just below his knee. That's the first contact. At that point the defender is nowhere near the ball. The second contact between the two players occurs (defender's right hip against the attacker's ankle) as the ball is tackled away.

      If it was only the second contact, there is an argument for this to not be a penalty. But the first contact is clear. This was a bad recommendation.

      A potential foul in the APP is a different question, but I haven't seen enough to make a good case either way.

      A few moments after this a controversial free kick decision from which the equalizer was scored by United. Zwayer made a play on gesture while AR2 was signaling a foul just outside the penalty area. I tend to no foul, play on.

      I don’t really understand the way this OFR was executed. If I’m not mistaken Orsato decided for a penalty without having seen moving video images, only based his (obviously correct) decision on a freeze frame. And such OFR’s I see more often lately. Why not take a few more seconds to get the complete picture and be absolutely sure?

    I can't say I agree with the penalty decision. Lamela kicks the defender, not the other way around! I don't think the defender commits an offense here. Lamela puts himself in danger; the defender wasn't careless or reckless at all.

      It is difficult to assess how much intensity had the contact with opponent after having kicked ball, but this was reason for the call. Blom saw a reckless challenge there, and ball before is therefore not an argument. However, we can discuss...

      I think, the foot of the defender is in a legal position and already pulling back after kicking the ball, when the attacker hits him with the shin. So not a foul by the defender IMO.

      I'm sorry but I don't understand the VAR intervention at all.
      Especially the way they actually showed Kabakov only that contact in a still image for the majority of the time. Of course he will go for a penalty then but if you watch it in real speed, you see the Wolfsburg player playing the ball and you can even see the WOB player pulling back after clearing the ball...

      Everyetime I see it, it gets stranger For me to call a Penalty. But in generell kabakov was not really Able to handle this Game in my opinion. He hat absolutely no Body language and did nothing against the theatralic of the players. Of course it is not his mistake alone, and More the mistake of the players. But his unclear line did Support that.

      I see your point of view. In my opinion it is clear why Blom intervened, but the overall perception doesn't talk about a clear penalty. Nobody would have questioned. I would be very curious to know how UEFA will assess this intervention.

      It's also remarkable, that there were no protests by Sevilla players - even the "fouled" player didn't expect a penalty there.

      BTW, 2 minutes before (80'), there was a potential handball penalty for Sevilla, checked by VAR - also without any protests.

      Sorry but this penalty and the intervention, after the defender CLEARLY played the ball and touched the attacker's leg afterwards, is a bad joke IMO. AND I dont see any reason for Kabakov still getting jobs in CL. He did not convince me even one time...

      Sorry, this decision cannot be supported. Blom's decision is absolutely incorrect IMO, but Kabakov has the responsibility in the end.
      The decision is wrong for me, because the defender played the ball and accidentally landed on the attacker's leg after a normal, football typical movement.
      Actually, I think it's more interesting to assess whether de VAR should intervene when this penalty is whistled on the pitch. I certainly think that the VAR should have intervened to correct the wrong PK call.
      But this emphasizes how absurd the call is.

      Ok, though remember that player interaction is an important part of refereeing, and so, too, is admin interaction with a website's viewers. Thus, instead of saying that one's posts are uninteresting, it might be better to say that those posts are off-topic, since we don't really know if the other viewers are interested or not unless they tell us.

    Ronaldo game-winning goal is very interesting re: the question of offside on Lingard. I think sanctioning the goal is correct. Lingard is not technically in the line of vision for the goalkeeper and doesn't really make an obvious impact that distracts. But it is all very close stuff.

    I know this is irrelevant to today’s matches but Cakir second yellow card decision yesterday was extremely poor. Better is expected from a referee that is one of the best ever. He looked at the Altletico players reaction and guessed it was a YC when indeed there was no contact at all.

      Obvious contact and obvious foul IMO, I disagree with you when you said "extremely poor". YC is not mandatory but at least supportable, great job Cakir. He is still in his top form. I feel sorry for him that he was treated unfairly in the EURO and CL last season

    Another Kabakov match, another ridiculous decision. I know some guys here defend him on the basis of good work in some youth tournaments but in UEFA competitions and World Cup qualifiers almost every match in the last couple of years has been a disaster

    Update on Cakir, according to Italian sport newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, AC Milan will send an official complaint to UEFA for the refereeing in the game against Atlético Madrid.
    In addition they report a list of Cakir alleged mistakes against Italian teams since 2015 (Barcelona - Juventus CL final).
    It is reported, but here I don't know which sources they have, that the mistake by VAR has been considered very serious and the Turkish team very likely will be totally out from the next set of matchday (3 and 4). We will check that. About Cakir, it is alwo written that he has trust by committee, but not a full trust, they say it was alerady decided that he will never get very big games again (meaning semifinals and finals). Well, about this latter information we had surely a confirmation during EURO... unluckily.

    Trentalange added a letter, wishing a renovation for Italian refereeing. Three new women have been added.
    Luca Pairetto and Daniele Chiffi will replace Daniele Doveri and Paolo Valeri.
    Doveri will join the FIFA VAR list, as well as Aureliano.
    Fabbri and Massa out from FIFA VAR list. About the latter, I think it is to allow him to focus on "field refereeing", for Fabbri surely a technical choice.
    Incredible success for Pairetto, until a few years ago, believe me, it was definitely impossible to think that he woud have reached this achievement. In my opinion Chiffi nomination is by far more deserved, but let's see how they will perform.
    I'm really happy for Aureliano, who deserved this appointment. He is the first NO FIFA referee from Italy who joins the list of VMO.
    Among assistant referees, Passeri and Costanzo out, Baccini and Bresmes in. Giallatini (1975) keeps the status. This could mean that he is planned to attend Qatar 2022 with Orsato, despite of the age.
    Three new women, two have retired from the list, and there is a new additional spot.

      I prefer noPK here. But there is a slight movement towards the ball, for me still natural and definitely not a deliberate attempt to block the shot on goal.

    Well looks like we won't see Kabakov with German teams anytime soon.
    Kicker (biggest german sport newspaper) gave him the worst possible grade and wrote: "Serious mistake on the Sevilla penalty, no consistency in cautionable offenses and the assesment of tackles. He was largely responsible for the hectic game."
    In general, I've not seen anyone here agree with the penalty decision.

    Something that I mentioned yesterday, I want to point out again. Now while I think the recommendation for an OFR is already a big mistake, the even bigger one for me is the way it was conducted. Kabakov was first shown the still frame of the contact with the SEV player that made it look way worse than it really was. After that he looked at the whole "tackle" twice from one camera angle before returning to the pitch.
    Kabakov gets the impression from the freeze frame that it was probably a clear hit and that there has to be a penalty. He probably already made his mind up from that first image that was shown to him.

    And to be honest, can you blame him for that? The first impression is always the most influential one and that half of the time in front of the monitor was just looking at a freeze frame is really difficult to understand for me...

      Good example anty. Similiar, but the kicker goes to ground and there is more force. It seems to be two caontacts on both legs aswell. So for me a PK, I would also prefer a VARint.

    Let’s be honest. Kabakov is a disaster for years. And some of you here continue to consider him as candidate for elite. He is not good enough even for First Category. After each game Kabakov is in charge there is a mess. Always controversial decisions. No one else got so many chances like him. Batta and Hugh Dallas should explain why they cover him all the time. No sense.
    I don’t agree to blame Kevin Blom as VAR. In such situations the communication between Referee and VAR is crucial to avoid OFR and to take the right decision. And the referee not really looked carefully the whole situation during the video check. It seemed that he was in a rush and he was ready with changing his decision only seeing the freeze frame. But is this only enough for decision? He had to ask for different angles, level, intensity, speed and etc. And to confirm his decision for NO penalty after that. But the referee has to be brave in such situations and to defend his first point (decision) especially when he was so close into the penalty area and he saw the contact perfectly well in real time, I’m sure. The referee must believe in himself not immediately changing his decision only because he was called for OFR. It is all about self-belief, self-confidence and courage.
