ReplyDeleteYes indeed. If I remember correctly, Kuipers' main focus in committee is young talented refs, Youth League etc. Based on that, not surprising to read his name here. Maybe he is also there for the final.

ReplyDeleteOn one hand, the champion title will be decided between Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad (both teams tied in points, don't know about their H2H points difference, but in case it's also tied, they're only separated by one goal in the general goal-average)
Del Cerro Grande (Al-Ittihad vs Al-Baten) and Sidiropoulos (Al-Hilal vs Al-Faisaly) will take charge of the title deciding games.
On the other hand, Makkelie will handle Al-Shabab vs Al-Ahli Saudi. Crucial relegation game for the latter, apparently a Saudi league founder club with a huge fanbase and that has never been relegated from the 1st category before, so it could be a huge drama.

Plenty fouls,plenty dirty plays resulting in 6 yellows and 1 red card.
2nd match,Italy vs England is played fair so far,1 crucial decision to give GK YC for foul outside the box was correct.
Expecting far more challenging 2nd half becaude result is not in favour of favourites

It was like watching Boca-River or Betis-Sevilla in terms of fouls and dirty plays.
Both matches extremely difficult for officials,especially SVK-AUT.
Very solid performance by Verboomen, I think UEFA (Kuipers) will be quite happy with his performance. Quite challenging game because bad disclipinary from both teams, it was a very dirty game from the beginning, it was very difficult not to issued lot of cards and in this case Verboomen showed very consistent foul detections in every yellow card he was issued.

DeleteHaving watched both matches with one eye and pushing the 'skip 10 seconds' button in UEFA.tv streamer for so many times thus probably missing some details, I think that both Kikacheishvili and Verboomen should leave Slovakia with their heads up high.
ReplyDeleteENG-ITA was challenging, entertaining for neutral viewers and intense at the same time. Correct early PK in 10' for Italy (careless tripping) and some interesting scenes for debate (SPA vs DOGSO in a obstruction foul by Italian GK later in the 1H - YC given, reckless challenge vs SFP in 90+5 for a ¿frustration foul? by ITA10, resulting in a confrontation and two subsequent correct YCs for ITA11 and ENG14). Anyway, I'm happy that the Georgian referee has managed to overcome the poor first impression I had of his performance in Kairat-Basel, will be interesting to know which plans UEFA might have for him (can Georgia have two referees in 1st Cat after Kruashvili's promotion in winter?)
SVK-AUT had, with the last spot in U20 World Cup at stake, all the tickets to be a very challenging game. And UEFA rightly appointed probably the best 'manager' in the tournament. I can't but echo the rest of the comments on the outcome: Very dirty game with lots of fouls, cards & very bad behaviour from players of both teams, one could have the impression of being watching one of those CONCACAF/CONMEBOL games that become a nightmare for their referees. I wouldn't say Verboomen's foul detection was faultless (that would be an incredible achievement in such a game, e.g. the correct RC for Slovak manager in injury time for dissent/yelling at FO Nobre was triggered by what I think was a missed holding foul) but his disciplinary was quite correct including both RCs for Austria (2YC for AUT16 in 45+3' for a reckless challenge, 2YC for AUT10 in 90+5' for UB) and there were also 2 correctly rejected PKs in 2H (both in Slovak area). As I said after watching Chefren's report of his debut performance in ITA-ROU, I appreciate a lot his personality and management skills, which without doubt have helped him survive this hell of a game. A natural talent to be monitored.

That's why imo UEFA refs are so far ahead than rest of the world.
A very challenging game for Kikacheishvili in Senec, no doubts even more after the intense final of second half, but still before that, it was possible to talk about a demanding task for the Georgian. I think that overall, also compared to the difficulty of the game, he had a good game. There were some crucial decisions epecially at the beginning, but also in second half. In addition to that, the intensity of the final part of the game, as said, and the fact that it was a KO game with direct qualification to next round, the final. Only the atmosphere was missing, since it was played in a quite empty stadium, but this absolutely didn't matter for the degree of difficult. Having already watched the Georgian in his previous appearance, I found again some very positive points in his performance: the awareness in terms of preventing possible confrontations, an immediate reaction with body language when a card had to be shown and an excellent positioning, in two of the crucial incidents in first half. I think that the confrontation occurred a few time before final whistle was unavoidable, in the meaning that referee didn't have any chance to prevent it. This also because it happened mostly due to the goal scored a few before, so for this reason Italian players were frustrated and England wanted to keep the score. The second half in its progress hadn't been so much agitated before he foul that caused a very agitated end. Having said that, I think referee can be at least supported regarding all the crucial incidents throughout the whole game, but one can have different ideas about some decisions. In my opinion, in this scenario, the fact that maybe he took the alternative decision in a crucial incident, must be added in the overall context. His positive approach in deciding for something was visibile.
ReplyDeleteAs it was for his previous game, about disciplinary management, he applied a classic "wait and see" in first half, trying to go on without cards as long as possible, and in this case I have to disagree about one situation, then in second half cards were issued when needed, with his classic reaction, as I already said, of running, when understanding that issuing immediately card can be very important for the players. This seems to be one of his "features", we can see very often referees giving card too slowly. Very good management of added time as well. Maybe a referee to follow for the future.

A few minutes in the game and already a potentially crucual situation to assess: I think that referee can be backed, with the empty net maybe somebody could have asked for RC, but I think you can't say that keeper is 100% out of the possibility to make a save, and there is also another defender. Let's say YC best decision of the two. Very good positioning.

Crucial moment in the game. The attacker is very clever in running in defender's path, being fouled by him. Basically, one could hate such kind of penalty incidents (maybe Mateu Lahoz wouldn't whistle it... :D), however nothing to say, good decision, with again a perfect view on the scene and a nice body language while indicating the spot.

Referee goes with the first warning of the game, in my opinion, at least for my point of view, hard to support, I see this, let's say, as 99% YC. Definitely a too reckless challenge and player was very lucky to escape from the sanction. However, mandatory warning was issued, referee was aware, this is important (his deliberate choice).

The third crucial situation of first half, I think that the YC issued by referee can be supported, maybe some people would go for red. Some points for analysis: attacker kicks the ball ahead just to get contact, he is allowed to do that, but this is a fact, then he has to reach ball again, the position is not central and player must change direction, the other defenders can't be 100% excluded. Maybe all are extreme arguments, but surely this isn't a 100% red card, VAR would never intervene, so I think OK by referee. Small remark: a look at AR1,. clear cooperation before decision. Maybe only for inside / outside the box, we can't know, but still quite good.

At the moment of scoring header, the English attacker closer to the net, seems to be in offside (not sure, I based my analysis on the replay behind goal), in that case, maybe some chances to consider is as active offside, because the ball passes exactly there and a defender from Italy has not chances to reach it. However, I think that defender wouldn't have still saved ball, but the offside stays as possible, if youi ask me. Of course, almost impossible without VAR, I'm not asking that to officials, but just for discussion.

The optimal decision for the foul that caused this confrontation was in my opinion RC for SFP. Clearly excessive force by player and a deliberate will to go directly into the opponent, without ball. But still, not a 100% RC, especially according to point of contact and low legs. The referee decided for YC because, in my opinion, he was aware that Italian player was frustrated. A RC maybe would have created a different scenario, but still, something would have happened. Good help by both assistant referees, ready to intervene in the match. One player per team was booked after the confrontation, according to UEFA guidelines. I don't see this moment as negative in the performance of the crew, would be nice to hear your opinions.

i do not agree with the PK decision, sorry but i do not see any contact. but maybe I am wrong. Great position and movement of the ref in this case
I understand what you are saying, the contact can't be 100$ demonstrated, but in such situation it is common to guess the foul, a touch is enough, and back referee, that's why I wrote it was a particular penalty and somebody can disagree (maybe more at top level than youth one).
