Wow, Madden is really fallen in disgrace: Malta-Estonia group D. I'm glad to ready a new name: Vijanen, I guess it is his first match with major national teams. I'm glad also about Visser's progress; Belgium is coming back to have a high level referee after good names like as Ponnet, Van Langhenove, Goethals and De Bleckeere
ReplyDeleteIf you watch Madden week in week out as I do in Scotland you would come to the conclusion that Madden shouldn't be anywhere near these games
DeleteMadden has announced his international retirement. He started in Malta, that was why he had this match to finish in Malta
DeleteCraig Napier (Scotland) involved in his first game since coming out as Gay. Wonder if Madden will be assisted by English VARs. Spoilt for choice as Both Attwell and Bankes have done 2 games so far as VAR
ReplyDeleteCoote has done one so will probably be him.
DeleteDon't forget Gillett worked with Walsh in his game.
DeleteI noticed how until now as Italian referees in nations league only Maresca and Guida have been designated and Orsato and Massa have not yet been designated. It is simply an observation that I make.
ReplyDeleteHonestl, I have some doubts whether we will see all the selected World Cup referees in this Nations League in June. The Nations League is a very good opportunity to give other referees a chance. On the other hand, the season was very long and the AA+ referees may want to have a (short) vacation before the WC preparations will start on 20-21 June in Madrid.
ReplyDeleteWC referees appointed in Nations League (4 / 11):
DeleteOliver - Taylor - Siebert - Frappart. And all Matchday 1.
MD1 gives them the opportunity to have a short break now, before Madrid.
Vincic is appointed to the IC PO and therefore out of NL?
Mateu and Makkelie had a PO game early June and maybe also some rest now.
I think we can expect some of the other selected WC-referees in MD4 (the refs with ‘early’ vacation) :)
I know that AR's team Makkelie Jan de Vries and Hessel Steegstra are on holiday now. Next appointment for them is 21 june in Spain for preparation WC.
DeleteI think this weeks of are for the most WC referees
Is Madrid only for world cup referees or all the Elite ?
DeleteOnly for selected world cup referees, leaded by FIFA
DeleteVery particular to read again Makkelie's name as VAR in UEFA competitions, after a so long time! We have Artur Dias as well in this role in another game.
ReplyDeleteHe is not a listed VMO within the FIFA list, is he?
DeleteUEFA doesn't seem to care at all about the FIFA VMO list...
DeleteEspecially with Gözübüyük since their mutual understanding is not optimal
DeleteMakkelie was/is one of the best VAR in Europe. Remember the periode when he was the regular VAR for Kuipers.
DeleteHe is also one of the best assistant referees. And if he decided to become a footballer he would be one of the best for sure.
Delete@15:35, you must be kidding? :)
DeleteGozubuyuk was a goalkeeper in his youth. Makkelie a right winger when he played football. If I remember correctly, both were always more passionated about refereeing than playing football. Refereeing was never a plan B.
Interesting fact: van Boekel was a professional football player. Pretty rare!
Q to readers from Belgium:
ReplyDeleteI noted that Lawrence Visser has been paired with VAR's from France. His name looks very Dutch/Flamish though. Is he a fluent French speaker, does anybody know?
Lawrence speaks English very well. As for French, he can communicate without any problem but he keeps the Dutch accent of course.
DeleteThanks! I know that Belgium is a bilingual country and many Flamish know French as well. I wonder if they communicate in French or English.
DeleteEnglish tends to be the neutral language for airline pilots and they have to communicate with people who speak different languages. I'm guessing it's the same for international referees.
DeleteGood game for Andy Madley
ReplyDeleteGreat to see Andy Madley has a game.
ReplyDeleteI always think he should be pushed in the PL a bit more as he is a safe pair of hands for most matches IMO. Maybe with 3 retirees we will see him in bigger PL matches next season.
Additionally, I assume UEFA is not bothered if Fourth officials are not FIFA refs as I have seen Robert Jones and John Brooks both appointed in the last weeks.
UEFA are not bothered if they are fifa or not same as the VAR's
Delete@Matthew completely agree about Madley, he seems talented but must prove this with more games. I’d sooner see him in ‘bigger’ games than the likes of Tierney.
DeleteNo Bebek or Jovic so far?
ReplyDeleteBit strange if you ask me...
Jovic VAR LIE - TUR, referee Novak Simovic (SRB)
DeleteVery strange, and again without Peljto.
DeleteI think I haven't seen Donatas Rumsas for a while, cmiiw he was observed by Rosseti and in the last UECL match if I'm not mistaken he gave a disappointing performance. Do you think he can still be a elite candidate who will be promoted tin the next few years?
ReplyDeleteNo, Rumsas was observed by Rosetti in UEL MD1 Monaco-Sturm Graz, where he had an expected performance in an easy game.
DeleteHe had a quite challenging game in Vienna in UECL R16 (observer Hauge), but I think his performance was better than what many people think. I think he's a quite talented referee and possible Elite material.
In my humble opinion was the performance of Rumsas @ Rapid Wien - Vitesse UECL R16 one of the worst referee performance of this season. I think Hauge wasn´t impressed either
DeleteBebek needs to retire. Waste of a badge
ReplyDeleteAn interesting fact is that many Germans AVAR these days are Assistant referees in European competitions: Mark Borsch, Rafael Foltyn, Stefan Lupp etc.
ReplyDeleteI have not noticed that these things apply to other nations.
Any particular reason for that?
There are also several examples from other countries (Praprotnik, Betts, Borkowski,...)
DeleteIn Bundesliga, the AVAR normally is a specialized AR, but I think, this also applies to other leagues.
Does UEFA really need Sanchez again after his so so performance in Bel-Ned? Bye bye performance principle.
ReplyDeleteThis also means two Spanish referees in a row for Germany, which is normally avoided. So maybe Sanchez is a replacement here?
DeleteParticular that Hernandez Hernandez, no games so far, is out as fourth official, it is a rare role for him. This makes me think that very likely he has a game on next days, otherwise I think he would have got this one! And yes, too strange that Sanchez Martinez has two games in a so short time, very likely one of them is a replacement.
DeleteEspecially again a spanish referee for Germany after Del Cerro Grande…
DeleteAnother good appointment for Marciniak with England - Italy, big match for a referee who will be at WC, that's also because one of the two teams involved will not participate. We can indeed see that a name like Orsato is used for Montenegro - Bosnia, expected to be hot, but very far away from spotlights. This strategy by UEFA committe goes on.
ReplyDeleteGreat appointment for Di Bello as well, he will be with Massa assistant referees, let's see whether the latter will get something more on next days. First appointment for Irrati as VAR in this edition of Nations League and he will be with Sidiropoulos.
ARs still rotate in Orsato's trio 5 months before WC? Why not using both WC assistants?
DeleteI don't know, this is strange, in past we saw different things with preselected trios. BTW the other WC assistant was appointed with Guida in Croatia - France. An argument can be that this is a UEFA game, so different choice... while in FIFA qualifiers he has the WC assistant referees...
DeleteI think that Guida in Croatia France asked his usual trio for very challenge and decisive match for his chance to come élite... anyway for sure in future every WC trio will not change anymore
DeleteNormal appointment for Halil Umut Meler in rotterdam
ReplyDeleteAnd Meler again in Kuip stadium. Hope he has a better performance than the one with Feyenoord in UECL
DeleteAny remark from Tantaskev's performance yesterday in the Final AFC WC play off ?
ReplyDeleteRock solid, only small mistakes in a fairly easy match. HLs available upon request.
DeleteJust curious, does anyone know if Orsato's fourth official Marchetti in MNE-BIH related to UEFA deputy secretary-general Giorgio at all?
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely not. I don't say that it is a very commoin surname in Italy but surely you can find many people, no relations between them. I talked about him in a post a few weeks ago, but I can't find it again ;)
DeleteObserver Ellingham busy with games on consecutive days in Podgorica, u21 and UNL
ReplyDeleteAny info for official list for Euro U-19 in Slovakia?
ReplyDeleteBig test for Di Bello imo, even if it's ”just” UNL games between the countries of the British Isles are usually hot
ReplyDeleteMarciniak is still on top
ReplyDeleteOrsato is good choice for what potentially could be hot match.
ReplyDeleteAureliano VAR in Ireland for Di Bello after having worked with Hennessy in Far Oer - Luxembourg, maybe they made the trip together! However there are some days (maybe too many?) in the middle and there is another assistant referee as AVAR.
ReplyDeleteBtw some of the AVAR we saw, Longo and Paganessi, are assistant referees that should leave the panel of serie A and B this season, so a last experience for them in this role before quitting...
Can't they become specialist AVARs in Serie A?
DeleteIn Germany, there are some retired ARs, who do exactly that.
"AVAR specialist" here would be seen as not enough for a career like they had, in case only VAR, but it is not possible for assistant referees.
DeleteWhere are the Norwegian referees?
ReplyDeleteMissed handball offence in SUIESP by Gözübüyük and Makkelie? It looked so.
ReplyDeleteSeems like, went very quickly on play on
DeleteBut never deliberate, nor unnatural for me, based on the body movements. Two lads in a duel
DeleteWas the chest, not the arm.
DeleteNot a very convincing performance by Gözübüyük so far
ReplyDeletenot a particularly bad one neither, but I agree. he has problems with foul detection, missed a YC against spanish GK and let a few other opportunities pass by. match could get out of control.

ReplyDeleteHow should we see this line drawn by Makkelie?
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FU1eKAVXwBUgdnG?format=jpg
The edge of the ball is an offside line, but I can't see the right point because of the player's head. A player's toes suspected of being in an offside position rest a lot on the line and rather look like an offside position.
For me, this image seems appropriate to say, "I can't get any proof that this player is in offside position." I think it would have been better not to publish the image with this line.

DeleteLove a player that knows he's going to be sent off so is already walking off the field before the red card is shown.
DeleteSUI - ESP 6' and 7'.
ReplyDeleteTwo interesting situations in a row.
At first, keeper impedes the attacker to execute a quiick throw-in, with an ermpty goal. I always thought about this scenario, despite of the fact that game is stopped, in reality keeper prevents an OGSO but LOTG can't provide more than a YC at maximum for this behavior (wasting time, unsporting behavior.. ecc.).
Then, the penalty appeal for handball:
https://streamja.com/WL5y5
I understand your philosophical point on 6', but it's important to note there was no OGSO present. Three defenders were back and the Swiss player didn't even have an open teammate to throw it to.
DeleteThat said, no yellow card?! That's horrendous. It is blatant cheating from the GK.
Yes, RC not possible, because it is not an offence leading to a free kick.
DeleteThe handball looks punishable. Even if you say, it is not deliberate, it still remains an unnatural position.
However the difficult part could be to be 100% sure, that it actually touched the hand, which I am not after seeing the angles in the clip.
Indeed YC for GK. I've got the feeling looking at the body language of Gözübüyük that he wanted to solve it with personality. Maybe some point he was coached on to improve it. The "old" Gözübüyük would have given a YC. On the other hand, it is just min 6. If you have to start a match with a YC for such a situation you draw a line which can give you problems later on because of the strict line.
DeleteWith respect to the possible handball. I can't a very clear handball situation. The hand is in the area of the ball, but these two angles don't show clear evidence that there was a handball. So support for the decision to play on.
How far into our own refereeing bubble and out of touch do 'we' have to be to NOT issue a caution in the 6' situation, and then even offer a (pseudo-)intellectual defence of it too. Football deserves better. It is a terrible decision, simple as that.
DeleteYC is the expected decision here. Game heated up immediately. Top refs recognize these moments.
DeleteWhile watching, I had the feeling that MANY small decisions were taken against the Swiss. Fouls (21 vs 10) and card statistics confirm that tbh.
I've rewatched the first 12 minutes of the match. One can debate about the not given YC to ESP #23 in min 6. One referee we praise for player management and autority when not giving it, now we critise because of the same reason.
DeleteMy personal view after a view incidents. In relation to player management. And no (pseudo) intellectual defence, but on how in the Netherlands things are taught and explained.
Min 2. Correct free-kick for ESP. Small dissent by SUI #18. Verbal warning correct.
Min 4:40 Correct free kick for SUI. Small dissent by ESP #9. Correct verbal warning.
Min 6. Small holding and blocking by ESP #23 before throw in. Perfect moment after each team got 1 verbal warning before to give a YC for dissent/blocking.
Min 6-10 a lot of small fouls or contact moments with a lot of irritation and theatre by players. All to influence the referee.
min 10:40. Foul by SUI #8 on ESP #9. Mandatory YC not given. Ball was not in reach of play for SUI #8.
This last moment was for me much more a moment where the YC was mandatory to keep control off the match and respect by the players. Definitly missed chance to draw a clear line to the players.
OFR in Gibraltar - Bulgaria, handball in the wall. Finnish referee doesn't look too much convinced in rewatching it. Given his positioning, he should have spotted directly it.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamja.com/bwPz2
Interesting position of the VAR screen, never seen one where the referee has to bend over to see.
DeleteThere were no better angles to show?! How is there not a camera angle that would be looking at the ball going at/over the wall? Even in a "minor" stadium like in Gibraltar, surely a camera is following the ball as it approaches the wall...
DeleteUnconvincing last minutes for Verissimo in Norway, at first a penalty to be whistled, in my opinion, in 86', and I would also have expected VAR intervention, then a few minutes later simulation, for me wrong. Contact from behind can be seen, maybe you don't want to whistle penalty, but it was never simulation.
ReplyDeleteIn 86' the replays don't really show any leg contact, I think. And the upper body contact would only make a soft penalty IMO, so fot me not a clear penalty, although it looked like one in the live picture.
DeleteAlso the simulation is not that wrong IMO, as the player exaggerates the contact (more a touch than a push) and maybe tries to pretend a tripping. However a YC is not really expected in such situations, I agree with that.
And what about right before end of the first half…for me pk
DeleteChefren comon?! This is penalty for you in 86.??
DeleteTwo penalties missed by Verissimo, first a very clear for a tackle to Norway, no VAR intervention, then a careless push in the back to Slovenia which was given as simulation.
ReplyDeleteproblems for Gözübüyük after final whistle because he didnt let a corner kick to be executed (which was fine for me) and then the referee was confronted with mobbing and didnt show a YC despite visibly going for the YC twice. Not a very good impression.
ReplyDeleteI can understand the critics. IMO better to let Switzerland take the corner kick. Additional time (+3) was over, but Gozubuyuk also booked a player during injury team and when Spain finally took the freekick, another minute had passed.
DeleteI can understand it too, but my point is more his management of the extreme dissent of swiss players. they ran at him and mobbed the referee. According to guidelines, a YC must come here and Gözübüyük also made the impression of wanting to show one but finally decided otherwise which is not the image I expect from an elite referee. Body signals and final decision didn't match here.
DeleteTrue. I never like him in heated games or when he has to deal with mobbing players or faces pressure. He needs to work on “not being influenced by anything or anyone”
DeleteDoes anyone know the referee for the Australia v Peru qualifier game?
ReplyDeleteSlavko Vincic has been reported, but I don't think there is anything official yet (?)
DeleteAnyone seen Lawrence Visser's match between Sweden and Serbia?
ReplyDeleteGood performance by Visser yesterday.
DeleteAgree, he did in general a good game. Maybe missed RC for DOGSO on Pavlovic in min 60?
DeleteVideo: https://streamja.com/ZK0b9
DeleteI think that YC can be supported due to the other defender, you can't exclude 100% that he could have tried another intervention. However, in case of RC issued directly, VAR should have supported. If you ask me RC or YC, I say YC.
OT: I'm glad that someone brought up the AFC U23 game between Turkmenistan and Iran handled by Aussie Alex King because it aroused my attention too (I'd add borderline SFP case carefully checked by VAR in 1H additional time to the mentioned situations). Following that, this morning I stumbled across a very interesting documentary following King during an A-League game he was reffing, where he stated sth self-reflective and quite remarkable(ly open) - "I might not be the best referee technically, but my man-management skills get me through tough situations". That was certainly coherent with what I saw in the TKMIRN game, but overall, my impression was really positive: Australia has a huge talent in this thirty-years(!) old official! His ability to connect with players (remember, across cultural lines in TKMIRN too) was extremely impressive, and I expect that the technical bits will improve with the great time that he has. I will watch him closely in following years. Making a more general remark: to be honest, I expected to see many more referees like King in the VAR-era of football refereeing (managerially excellent, with the big calls watched over, and corrected when necessary, by the VMOs). In reality, it seems to me that with the big calls taken care of, VAR has facilitated a much more 'lazy' management of the referees - certainly in UEFA anyway - and has lead to an overall poorer technical handling of the matches (IMO), compared to what we could have hoped for anyway. Being fair though, I guess the development 'lag' from national associations is to be completely expected for still some years, and we may well see many more referees with a 'profile' like King in the future.
ReplyDeleteAt least from my end, I hope that is the case!

What are your thoughts on the YC for Ronaldo in POR-CZE in min 50:40?
ReplyDeleteRef was Jug. Don't know if you can watch this video on twitter outside of the NL.

DeleteHere the foul by Cristiano Ronaldo: https://streamja.com/49557
In my opinion YC is OK, RC would have been harsh, never VAR stuff.
Almost a carbon-copy of the foul by the Saudi player for which Arturo Brizio Carter sent him off at WC 1998 (for those with a long memory :)). Ronaldo's (lack of) reaction to being cautioned says to me that CR7 feels he was a bit lucky not to be sent off by Jug, and I'd agree with him in that case. As observer, I'd strongly praise a RC given here! However, I guess in reality we are looking for a bit more in modern days to reach SFP than this tackle.
DeleteI think a consequential difference with the 1998 tackle you allude to is the position on the field and, therefore, the intent of the tackle.
DeleteIn 1998, that tackle was about stopping a dangerous opportunity. It was a desperation launch to prevent an attacker from turning a corner. Therefore, it just had a lot more force in the result because of the speed of the two players and where they were going.
Here, Ronaldo is lazy more than anything. It's in the defensive third and he just sort of throws himself in there in a perfunctory mode. His slide makes his momentum continue into the defender who, after playing the ball, is simply just trying to keep moving and avoid the challenge. There's just not as much intensity or force or, yes, intent, in the challenge.
They look the same in a lot of ways but I think the distinction makes them different. So different that red was right in 1998 and yellow is right here.

Some quite interesting clips! The last one in perticular, as there is a foul IMO, but the exaggerated fall looks ricidulous, so maybe that is why VAR did not intervene. (KT on knee)
DeleteRobert Madden (Scotland) confirms his international retirement on his Instagram page ending a 12 year international service.
ReplyDeleteHaving viewed the clips from NOR-SLO, RC for DOGSO is correct and I don’t mind the YC for simulation in 90’ but how were Norway not awarded a penalty in 86’
ReplyDeleteVery challenging start for Madley in Moldova, with a penalty whistled, another appeal and a possible RC for SFP (YC issued, no VAR intervention).
ReplyDelete42' in AZE - SVK: penalty appeal, Rumsas played on. Attacker deliberately put his leg right in front of defender in order to get the contact. The classic situation in which Mateu Lahoz would play on :). VAR didn't intervene, correct in my opinion, also because the Lithuanian had a very free view and excellent positioning, he saw it as it exactly happened.
ReplyDeleteA few minutes before, 28', correctly rejected another penalty appeal, replay showed that even a simulation was possible, attacker falling down without real contact with keeper, good decision because a penalty could have been whistled as result of wrong perception!
42' clearly is a foul by the attacker, who contrary to other scenes never plays the ball in this situation.
DeleteAlso a kick by the attacker directly afterwards, but probably not intense enough for a clear VC (but Red still would have been supportable IMO).
And yes, 28' should be a YC for simulation.
incorrect YC by Rumsas

ReplyDeletepoor performance by rumsas

Not sure, whether clear enough for VAR, but RC is at least the clearly better decision IMO.
DeleteVery poor performance again from Rumsas. Maybe he thinks he is better than he is
DeleteOFR in Albania - Israel, wrong penalty for handball whistled by Tiago Martins.
ReplyDeleteAgree. Just before this call it was a penalty appeal by Albania for tripping, after chek VAR supported referee non call.
DeleteMost likely no hand contact at all. But if even it existed, a penalty would be very doubtful (short distance, not really unnatural arm position).
DeleteFor the foul penalty appeal (19'), I don't see a clear tripping contact, but together with the arm contact, I don't think, it would not have been wrong to award a penalty for charging. But still grey zone and nothing for VAR.
DeleteHowever, Martins might have been influenced by that, when he gave the penalty a minute later.

What about sidiropoylos
ReplyDeleteVery annoying positioning by Sidiropoulos, always impeding both teams in developing their games, being in the player's path or on the pass way.
ReplyDeleteApart from that, coherent performance with good foul detection and disciplinary management.
Best thing I saw today was when the Danish player shot the ball at the opponents chest. Then he lied and protested that it hit the arm so aggresively with his body that he injured his own shoulder. Hope he learned his lesson.
ReplyDeleteis Matteo Simone Trefoloni a important obverser @Chefren ?
ReplyDeleteIn recent times, he is becoming more important than past, that's my idea based on his assignments, of course I can't know it directly, but many games for him and some crucial names he observed. I would dare to say, he then now reports his considerations directly to Rosetti. Also, now in Italy he is working as Head of Technical Department of AIA, the role in which Trentalange became an extremely important observer and FIFA instructor. So in this way he has more time to observe without having a national committee of referees to handle, the perfect condition for being more accurate as observer.
DeleteClose goal line decision in Dublin. Nothing given. VAR checks it but no definitive angle. My instinct is that it was a goal
ReplyDeleteI thought it looked over the line aswell but nothing clear was shown
DeleteGood performance in Dublin from Di Bello - let the game flow really well and used gestures accordingly to tell players to get up aswell as brandishing necessary YC’s
ReplyDeleteMeler missed a red card for SFP. Fou by Krychowiak on de Jong. VAR should have intervened. Stretched leg, studs up, hit the opponent onthe back heel.
ReplyDeletecorrect yc(16) by umut meler
ReplyDeleteSoft penalty given by Lechner. I think is rather a mistake but VAR has to suppport the decision.

ReplyDeleteYes I agree, most of the times for such incidents always VAR.
DeleteDirect decision to be praised.
Guys help me ! Why is Sanchez Martinez in Elite? He is so far from the best referees. He has an easy match with a lot of worst decision. I cant imagine what happening if he has a harder match.
ReplyDeleteBecause he's Spanish!
DeleteHe had starting to be a showman as Mateu while his decisions shown not able to be a referee like Mateu Lahoz. Sanchez Martinez is a simply first category referee .
DeleteOrsato's caution to Pjanić (reckless challenge)
ReplyDeletehttps://streamja.com/JG01Q
Extremely raised lag and point of contact say RC.
DeleteIntensity CAN say YC.
Intensity won... :D
Most of VAR would support this choice, but maybe not all of them, if you ask me.
And then we shouldn't forget that Orsato and Pjanic after Inter - Juventus 2018 is always a very particular story...
This is a YC IMO, RC would be rather wrong. Intensity and mode of contact are not high enough for a red.
DeleteFor me, a YC is mandatory, but nothing more. The intensity isn't high, even if it's dangerous, but far from SFP for me.
DeleteClearly no RC IMO. Upwards movement of the leg and nearly no contact.
DeleteYC is perfectly fine for me in this situation. What happened between Pjanic and Orsato in 2018?
DeleteA very long story that still lasts today, with Orsato having officiated again Inter after that time, almost 5 years, only once so far. He missed a very clear YC, he was about to give it, but then he renounced, it would have been the second and the player from Juventus would have been off. After that, Juventus made an incredible comeback and they won the game in the last minutes, then after that winning also the title (it happened on April, last matchdays of serie A). Many fans stated that it was the mistake deciding the title, Orsato was persecuted by angry fans, he had also troubles with his family, a TV show called "Le Iene" is still trying to tease him after so many years. There was a more than meticulous and obsessive investigation about the dialogue with the VAR, Rizzoli, at that time serie A referees head, was interrogated, it is more than a long story... strange that you never heard.
DeleteBut some Italian things maybe don't leave the borders :D
In my opinion the mistake was extremely clear and very bad, a reckless challenge he didn't recognize because too close to incident, catching rathee the particular than the overall situation (this was the reason), but for sure we can never say it was a deciding mistake for the title, even in 10 men, everything could have happened. Just unlucky Orsato to make that mistake exactly in that game and with that timing...
Thank you for the explanation, I appreciate that! Interesting story. Pjanic was the player that should have been sent off?
DeleteI indeed dont remember having heard of that, but I wasnt member of this forum back then, so probably no surprise... ;)
Good first half by Halil Umut Meler.
ReplyDeleteAnd now both his ARs overruled by VAR, incorrectly disallowing goals for offside
Deletenot the best performance of the ARs
DeleteI honestly don't know why this referee is in Elite category. I've watched him in two matches now and he seems to have no other game management tools than showing cards. Both his ARs continue to make errors, especially AR2. There is literally nothing I see why he deserves to be in this category.
Delete2x wrong offside call by Meler AR's First one was very clear so big mistake but the 2nd much closer. But not a good night for them
ReplyDeleteFor the 1-1 goal, Meler somehow directly changed the decision from offside to onside, although the AR had raised the flag.
DeleteI think Meler performs very weak. His foul detection is really poor.
DeleteI must say, as the match progresses, I am for from impressed with Meler. 8,1 - 8,2 performance at best. He whistles some fouls that are none, quite a lot of cards, not much respect from the players for him. Dutch commentator critizises him a lot, even if nothing against The Netherlands happened so far.
ReplyDeleteThe level of refereeing of Meler is getting worser by the minute
DeleteGerman Commentator praises him.
DeleteHe is losing control (of he had it). Very, very poor. 8 YC so far…
DeleteMeler is in problems now. Atmosphere is heating up. Now few more cards. Teams have a small fight. If he isn’t carefull now and start to ignore some theatre from the polish team things can get worse and out of control.
ReplyDeleteMeler very weak referee.
ReplyDeleteCorrect. Very very weak
DeleteCorrect penalty by Meler
ReplyDeleteA bit unexpected to have an OFR, when there were absolutely no protests by the attacking team, which could indicate that there was nothing obvious about it.
DeleteHowever, here there was a clear movement towards the ball, so correct OFR and good work by VAR to spot it.
Only point for improvement: IMO the angle from behind the goal showed the handball much clearer, but wasn't shown to the referee.
This argument that nobody protests and so it wouldn't be a clear and obvious mistake has beeen heavily criticized, mainly because we could also say that most of players and fans don't know law of the games, so it's up to referee to check them. Also, the fact that an incident is not noticed shouldn't be considered, the clear and obvious mistake should be in itself, not in the reaction of players, in case.
DeleteMeler isn’t ready yet for this kind of matches (high level of football).
ReplyDeleteMeler not convincing especially in minor foul detection. Detects to much situations as foul who are very doubtful. Loses respect and authority on both sides.
ReplyDeleteVAR very good tonight. 2 times goal correct NO-Osffside and good handball detection and OFR advised for a penalty to NED. Was hard to detect.
Overal Meler was lucky that things didn’t got out of hand. Atmosphere on the pitch was heated up a lot.
My guess that the VAR screen wasn't prepared:
ReplyDeleteThis stadium (De Kuip) has a VAR screen very close to the audience (there is no other place to put it). The KNVB people don't see this as a problem and the referees enjoy this situation as unique, but the UEFA people may be different.
https://video.twimg.com/ext_tw_video/1535721761957896196/pu/vid/1280x720/ybJM1rsaKcZG9kDc.mp4
Agree with the consensus above about Pjanic's challenge - reckless only for sure. From what I saw, Orsato had a good match, his excellent personality and management skills on display (no fitness issues). Below some clips from 2H:
ReplyDeletehttps://streamja.com/rO4Ep
https://streamja.com/KLnZ0
https://streamja.com/lX4Ed
https://streamja.com/emjWp
So the first 3 clips is master-class stuff from Orsato.
DeleteBut, on the 4th (Montenegro goal)... do we ever see a replay? Because that sure looks like a careless strike in the APP. Orsato seems sure it was simulation.
Referring to the 3rd clip , good advantage in in min 73:02 following reckless challenge by MNE #2 and then showing the YC in min 73:14.
DeleteOrsato made it clear to BIH #2 that he was cautioned following the reckless challenge.
IMO, it's very difficult to appoint a UEFA referee with such a strong personality as Orsato. He always shows clearly that 'he' is the referee and will referee the game, and not the players, and he makes it. I like it !
Orsato is growing up match by match... IMO he will be a serious candidate for WC final
DeletePlayer totally exaggerated the contact. I am sure UEFA would not want a foul awarded.
DeleteI always had the impression that Netherlands was one of the easier(?) teams to officiate, because its usually 11 players focused on playing football. Nothing more or less.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the atmosphere in R’dam can be hot and the scoreline wasn’t easy today for Meler. However if a ref struggles to control a game that involves NL and Poland, what is gonna happen when he has to officiate the “dark art” mobbing teams that try fool or put pressure on him for 90 min?
NED-POL
