20 comments:

  1. Appointments have been made already before first legs.

Rivera Olmedo, Anex, Byrne, Campos but also last WWC attendants Foster, Huerta de Aza and Martinčić ended with dead rubbers.

On the other hand, Olofsson, Andoníou, Peșu and Projkovska with interesting clashes!

  2. Foster (with Welch 4th official), Martincic and Huerta de Aza have been sent to games in which the home team is leading by 6, 7 and 4 goals respectively; the only big name with an appropriate game is Olofsson

Maybe a different strategy compared to men's football is needed, with either the big names featured in the first leg or appointments made only after the first leg?

  3. Important observer for Campos…

  4. Orsato will be fourth official on Monday evening in serie A for a debut (referee Tremolada, Udinese - Lecce) so he seems out from CL MD3.
He will rather appear on MD4. Out from serie A Guida and Massa, they can have both games in CL, I think.
Mariani after the facts of Bruxelles will referee Milan - Juventus on Sunday evening, very unexpected assignment, because he hadn't started a good season in serie A, let's see how he will perform.
In case of European assignment, if CL, only Wednesday available for him, but I think unlikely, maybe EL on Thursday or CL on MD4.

    1. I like it when top Elites are 4th official to a young referee. In EPL, Anthony Taylor fulfills this role as well. You don’t see this in all countries. Is it common practice in Italy?

      Some additions:
      - Turpin is off, Letexier works on Friday which indicates UCL MD3 (or reserve spot). Plenty of options for Letexier. I won’t put any money on it :)

      - Anthony Taylor works on Monday as well, so like Orsato, a after the MD2 appointment, a MD4 appointment expected. On the other hand, Michael Oliver works on Saturday. Both English officials have the same VAR, therefore I’d expect Oliver in MD3. Berlin vs. Napoli or Feyenoord vs. Lazio are available for the English. Personally, I hope to see him in the latter game, just to see his management of Maurizio Sarri :D. This match has everything to be very challenging. Hostile crowd, heated coaches and the Italian’s want revenge.

      - Gözübüyük is the entire weekend off. Not even appointed as VAR. Certainly not a regular preparation before UCL. Makkelie is quite hidden, a low profile Saturday game on the third ESPN channel, however he works with a non-FIFA AR. I can't draw any UCL-conclusions on that. He’s probably hidden for the PSV-Ajax game on 29 Oct. All Ajax games are quite (media-)sensitive at the moment, due to big issues in Amsterdam.

    2. Yes, common practice in Italy. Heads of refereeing care about young referees who make their debut in top dvision.

    1. Impossible to see Taylor with Roma, not so soon and not at a home match for Roma.

    2. also hardly to accept a german referee handling bayern munich 😉

    3. Indeed, it is quite difficult to find a good referee for every match with all the rules.
I'm just going to swap Felix Zwayer and François Letexier from their match and go for Jesús Gil Manzano instead of Anthony Taylor in Roma.

    4. Taylor is refereeing on Monday and with a non- fifa AR so likely nothing in Europe, certainly not with Roma

    5. Zwayer had Arsenal in MD1. @mathias

    6. Very difficult to make predictions with all the restrictions that apply. And if you also have to check domestic assignments and observers, the puzzle is even more difficult :)

Btw, I’ll eat my shoe if Makkelie gets PSG anytime soon…

I don’t understand the Refcom’s appointment strategy though. The PSG – AC Milan game (and reversed one) are high profile, sensitive and will be crucial for the standings. If you are a Ref boss, you know the entire schedule and you can anticipate on this early enough. Why wouldn't you save eg. Marciniak for one of these games, cause all games that involve Newcastle and Dortmund are supposed to be more fair, with an English and German team involved. PSG vs Milan could be different, especially when its MD3 and MD4. Now, it probably will be a lenient Vincic and Soares Dias. The best options beforehand? I doubt it. Maybe a repetition of a Spanish is possible in MD4. But that’s it.

    7. Yes, quite difficult indeed. My try for MD3 would be
      Galatasaray - Bayern München: Letexier
      Manchester United - Copenhagen: Pinheiro
      Sevilla - Arsenal: Vincic
      Lens - PSV: Jorgji
      Braga - Real Madrid: Oliver
      Union Berlin - Napoli: Kruzliak
Inter Milan - Red Bull Salzburg: Zwayer
      Benfica - Real Sociedad: Kovacs
      Feyenoord - Lazio: Marciniak
      Celtic - Atlético Madrid: Kabakov
      PSG - Milan: Soares Dias
Newcastle United - Borussia Dortmund: Peljto
RB Leipzig - Red Star Belgrade: Sanchez
Young Boys - Manchester City: Frankowski
      Barcelona - Shakhtar Donetsk: Gözübüyük
      Antwerp - Porto: Bastien

    8. Unknown- I wouldn't say that games that involve Newcastle are supposed to be more fair. If you watch Newcastle they are nothing like the other english teams and adopt atheltico madrid style tactics

  6. Unfortunately, while Irfan Peljto is doing a great job and showing he has a place in Elite category, there are scenes in the Bosnian league that shouldnt be possible, especially not in the first league and in a big derby Borac-Sarajevo:

    1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYPNnc-LVi8
Watching full sequence (6:40 in the video) very likely AR missed the head butt, and he remained with the original assessment on the long ball, in which all attackers can be onside, due to a defender between them (nevertheless, not clear).
Important mistake, but definitely easy to explain, rater a normal one, then without VAR of course you can do nothing...

  7. @Mathias: Felix Zwayer for Bayern München ?

    1. So, taking a look at the games on that day: he should be out from group E (too difficult teams to handle, even Atlético - Celtic), group F (no need of mentioning why), group H (Royal Antwerp is there), so the game should be in group G, and the one in Manchester. It would be second debut for a referee with the Swiss side of Young Boys Bern. With Rizzoli as observer, it is possible.
