  1. UEFA.tv games for Maļcevs, Kooij, Andoníou and Reitala. Also, many undecided duels in Domestic Champions Path. Those games are really useful for developing young referees (U17, U19 and many U21 qualifiers are not at the same level as UYL, imo).

  3. Lambrechts confirmed in UCL by belgian press... Good luck after Visser performance. Lardot is better in domestic league but never trusted by UEFA despite a semi final in U19 euro.

  4. Kovacs has a game Saturday with his European ARs. Many read this as a sign that he will appear in UCL MD3.
Hațegan will be the referee Sunday in his 300th game in Romanian Liga1. Only other 4 referees reached this milestone in history.

    1. Thanks for the info. What are your ideas about Hațegan situation? Now he seems to be fully back in Romania but not still in UEFA. He attended the UEFA course even in past when he was out from the pitch, so I think that he could be appointed for a game, nevertheless this is still to happen. Maybe only one appearance before the end of this group stage in one of the three competition?
One should also think about possible medical issues, maybe OK for Romania but not for UEFA, but that's only speculation...

      Delete
    2. As I said before, I wait for Hațegan to come back also in UEFA. It doesn't matter the game, UECL or a dead rubber in Euro Qualifiers. Important is to have a game. An idea circulated that he is in an observation period with domestic games, so UEFA could understand his curent level before appointing him. This scenario is possible, I guess. UEFA should have reasons not to give up on Hațegan because they desparately need trusted referees from neutral countries. Hațegan stated that if it is to come back on the pitch his goal is to return to his previous level. So I think that the plan for his returning is on but things develop pretty slow for now.
I was also wondering about medical issues ok for Romania but not for UEFA but I rather doubt it. It is impossible to find information in this regard anyway.

    2. Orange is not bad but in my opinion is nothing like what Collina wore in the past as the photos try to suggest, and I mean yellow. It reminds me more of the Adidas Europa League orange referee shirt from around 2012/2013 or smth like that: orange with some red lines.

    1. My first idea was, that this is more the second tier of CAF referees, because the names sounded rather unfamiliar.
But a quick research showed me, that Mutaz did their CL final and Beida and Ismail had CL SFs this year.
And Beida and Mutaz are nominated for U17WC.

    3. These are top African clubs and this is the equivalent of the European Super League that was stopped by UEFA. Actually, the original name was the African Super League, but, after the European scandal, they changed it to the African Football League. It is only open to elite clubs.

    4. After their refereeing disappointment at WC22, CAF is changing generations. The referee names mentioned above are those currently considered top referees in Africa.

  12. Craig pawson with a shocking performance in Liverpool Everton. Failed to give clear second yellow to Liverpool defender. Clear handball in the penalty area and OFR needed. Everton manager fuming with his performance so far and been booked.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He certainly made a 'clear match error' in not giving Konaté a SYC. Liverpool should also have been awarded a penalty very shortly before the one rightly given (indeed only after OFR). Tough game for Pawson in terms of key incidents.

      Delete
    2. For me, not the clearest SYC for Konaté, the ball was too far away, so no SPA for me is supportable. The penalty incidents, before penalty given, is also not a clear and obvious error for me. I'm not trying to defend the referee, but can't say, that the performance was shocking

      Delete
    3. It's not about whether it was clear 2nd YC,it's about keeping the same criterium.
If you gave 2nd YC to Young in 1st half, then for sure this was more worthy of a 2nd YC.

The fact that Klop subsituted him 2-3 minutes after says enough, similar thing happened in England-Italy match.

      Delete
    4. Beto was not getting on the end of his touch so it cannot be SPA, correct decision by Pawson

      Delete
    5. I agree that no second YC for Konate for SPA is supportable due to a lack of control. At the same time, it's still a possible YC for failing to show respect for the game for the clear holding offence during an Everton counter-attack (rescuing the YC even if SPA not neccessarily met).

My biggest gripe is his judgement of SPA in the first half. Presumably Young's first YC was for SPA, despite the foul occurring in Liverpool's defensive half, with minimal passing options, several defenders back, and a lack of 100% control. Maybe it's supportable - but why was Tarkowski then not cautioned for the Jota breakaway? That seemed a much clearer SPA for me (although he was cautioned anyway later, probably for PI).

      Delete
    6. Holding? It's a tripping foul. Before Beto can put his left leg on the ground, Konaté touches at the legs so that he can't do so. The likelihood of Beto controlling the ball without this foul (remember that he is felled quite 'early' into his run as per the nature of Konaté's offence) is quite high, imo, and if you look at the position of other Liverpool defenders, this is a clear SPA-scenario. It's a clever, tactical foul that should have been punished with a YC. No need to overcomplicate refereeing! :)

Look at all the four clips below where Pawson no card vs. YC is the question (Young and Konaté) incidents. What do they have in common? The delay of the decisions!(!!). Pawson takes forever to decide whether to book or not. In my humble opinion, English referees don't really have a deep understanding of what a YC is, instead they focus on the temperature of the game and whether it 'needs' a YC. An elite referee should already feel the temperature of the game and make his decisions accordingly, knowing how the players are going to react to a given situation! This jeopardy of 'actually I don't really know if that is a YC or not' leads to trouble and we already saw it in the past with incidents like Tierney in Liverpool vs. Manchester City (or Brooks earlier this season).

English refs don't read/understand the game very well and it really shows, imo.

      Delete
    7. Mikael I respect your opinions a lot but there is little possibility (if any) of Beto controlling that ball, it cannot possibly be SPA can it, because there is no attack being stopped? And I don't think delayed whistles should be construed as a bad thing, in certain scenarios yes but he gave himself time to reach an acceptable decision.

      Delete
    8. I have been trying to express this point Mikael made about English referees and Yellow card but Mikael has echoed my sentiments!!! English referees do not give yellow card based on Lotg(sometimes of course). Am English referee will blow a penalty for handball and the shot was on goal but it will be a miracle if the ref cautions , they first gauge the atmosphere if it is needing a card or they just let go!!

      Delete
    9. Craig Pawson never takes the big calls, he rarely now calls penalties onfield, certainly not handball ones. He just waits to be sent trotting to the screen

      Delete
  13. The second Konami one was as clear as you can get. Sadly he didn’t have the bottle to make a decision. Parsons gormless look shows his personality. He isn’t confident with decisions

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Konami? I'm sure Kazuki Ito would have issued a SYC in this sitaution... ;)

Joking aside, I agree with the point that the game 'overtook' Pawson at some point in the second half and this element of his style 'justifies' UEFA's decision to keep him in 1st Category and not promote him further (despite some prestigious appmnts suggesting they were testing him such as CL GS debut or Ajax vs. PAOK qualifier).

I'll do clips of all the big scenes shortly.

    1. According to this article, it seems as he even said: "I think they will win against Ukraine".
Statements that he should have absolutely avoided, given his role! Sometimes I'm really suprised by how easily people make statements!
I can understand his point of view, talking ONLY about Italy (and not against other national teams), but he should know that saying something can be perceived in a different meaning.
Easy to say: "Yes, we know Italy as very big team, they are now in a very particular moment, hopefully they will be back soon in future", without going into details...

He clearly stopped the game already, when the ball still was near the Real penalty area, which therefore was fully acceptable. Not the referee's fault, that the players continued until the goal.
And the dropped ball was then rightly given to Real.
So I don't really see the problem.

  17. Interesting situation in Sassuolo-Lazio at '62: RC for Provedel because of a wrong interpretation of AA2, who thought the goalkeeper took the ball outside the area, then the VAR corrected the mistake. However, I have some doubts about the RC, I don't think it was a DOGSO.

    1. The red card in this position is clear correct. But I don't really understand the position in the 55th minute. This position is a clear penalty. But the referee gave an offensive foul. Shouldn't VAR have intervened in this position?

    1. I think with current situation in Israel we can easily predict that BLR officials will be back on duty in UCL after “very good” performance in Belgium.

    2. The other question regarding the situation in Israel is, whether the Israeli officials can work in international games.
There might be some difficulties to travel - or some of them could even have military duties.

  23. Very much some new observer names among these appointments, or some rarely used. Some observers on their own country (normal in youth league) and some (not all) observers doubling up with UCL match . And at least one appearing twice this week

  24. I am not very happy with the performance of mr Kooij (Netherlands), so many cards, and cards for dissent (keeper 93 min) hè do nothing. His whistle management not good. Sometimes so loud and same level of whistle. Mark 8.0/8.1.

  25. Peter Rasmussen (DEN), Zoltán Szarka (HUN), Radek Příhoda (CZE) are new observers.
