Anthony Taylor is very hidden which I find suspicious. I still think there is a chance for him to get the UCL final in case of for example a PSG-Barca final.
ReplyDeleteHe has just many games that he can't officiate, but committee continues to appoint him when possible.
DeleteIn this set:
RANGERS FC (SCO) - FENERBAHÇE SK (TUR)
Scottish team
MANCHESTER UNITED FC (ENG) - REAL SOCIEDAD DE FÚTBOL (ESP)
English team
TOTTENMHAM HOTSPUR FC (ENG) - AZ ALKMAAR (NED)
English team
ATHLETIC CLUB (ESP) - AS ROMA (ITA)
Italian team
EINTRACHT FRANKFURT (GER) - AFC AJAX (NED)
German team
OLYMBIAKÓS SFP (GRE) - FK BODØ/GLIMT (NOR)
Possible, but not a real difference with the one he got.
SS LAZIO (ITA) - FC VIKTORIA PLZEŇ (CZE)
Italian team
In Champions League clashes even more difficult because many spotlights and other games that he can't officiate.
In my opinion, if they wanted to assign him to CL final, it would have been more than easy when Vincic got it.. Vincic as Slovenian could have waited without problems all the years, while the English had his perfect occasion at home, without English and Italian teams, but he was not rewarded.
Then, you have to talk about performance and you can add that in some cases, he hasn't shown best officiating, but yes, Rosetti still supporting him for rather decent / good games.
apart from marciniak, uefa selects the referee for the CL final already at the beginning of the season, with a back up in case of a country clash in the final between the referee and a team(s)
Deleteduring the season the appointments by UEFA are never the biggest matches, maybe 1 almost big match, it's exactly what happened to Vincic, Turpin, Lahoz and Skomina(the hidden appointment with skomina wasn't that hidden in the end)
the last appointment before the final is normally a 2nd leg R16 match with some prestige, or a lowkey QF, will need to watch the QF appointsments when they come
I think, if they wanted to give Taylor a big game, it could have been one of the Benfica-Barcelona legs.
DeleteTechnically he can referee a Scottish team. Atkinson did one in euro 2016 and that was a Wales game
DeleteBig names for the Europe League matches; I was expecting more 1st class referees despite double engagement
ReplyDeleteNyberg, Meler and Mariani are the missing big names.
ReplyDeleteAlso Visser, Grinfeeld and Kavanagh with no game after getting EL in the play-offs.
Maybe UEFA was unhappy with their performances in the previous round.
On the other hand, we have 8 referees (if I counted correctly) working 1st and 2nd leg, so only 40 different referees are used in the R16.
Surely this selection must suggest something, good remarks, not a case that in the games wit Nyberg, Mariani and Meler there were discussions. I think one can draw conclusion that the red card Mariani issued in Monaco, among other things, was not the best presentation at this level for the Italian referee. He would have surely got another game, too many referees repeating in these weeks...
DeletePinheiro immediately repeating Alkmaar seems very avoidable.
ReplyDeleteI'm starting to get the feeling that UEFA have Anthony Taylor to referee the champions league final if no english team make it that far, his appointmets are very lowkey, hidden, this season compared to last season
ReplyDeleteStarting with Makkelie, a classic appointment with an Italian team. First leg for Rumsas was very challenging, this can be similar, so I think the Dutch will be very careful. After that, a CL quarterfinal would be possible, I think, given how committee is managing.
ReplyDeleteZwayer with a second assignment on this week like other referees, as we are discussing. The fact that you wouldn't expect a very experienced Elite for the game in Greece, can suggest us once again what Philipp said, committee didn't want to appoint other referees, even if in some cases this was possible. Choices based on previous performances by missing referees.
Peljto: regular path for him, another good game, this time in EL, accoding to some readers who wrote one week ago, this can be presented as the most sonorous tie of the round, I can agree, but Real Sociedad - Manchester United is maybe not that less. Possible an appearance in CL Quarterfinals for him, accoridng to what he did so far and before knowing about the performance in this game. Still impossible for me at moment to think about a CL semifinal, but I can be wrong.
Turpin for Roma, nothing to add, only a few referees can handle Italian teams in such games. One can point out the difference between first leg in which in my opinion committee decided to take a "small risk" by using the Swiss (experienced, but not at the level of Turpin and the others), then the very safe choice for this second lg in Spain, and, more generally, given that assignments are mostly made based on Italian teams in the games in which they are involved, away game is surely on paper potentially more difficult than home-game (this is in my opinion how Rosetti thinks).
Pinheiro with another appointment after Rosetti observation, still keeping a certain degree of difficulty in his games, not very challenging ones or top games, but medium level. Making experience for becoming a more trusted Elite, so far OK his path.
In Manchester, Bastien with a renewed trust by committee, following also the observation by a committee member in recent times, the French school at moment is the top of UEFA refereeing. Bastien added himself to Turpin and Letexier. Let's remember that at the times in which Bastien was getting a game like the famous Olympiacos - Milan, he was even close to demotion, if you ask me...
About Taylor, you can read above my opinion, still trying to give him some games due to the extremely big experience, but in reality a referee who can't have big dreams at moment, given also the age and the long career so far.
Last but not least Eskas, well, very liked by Rosetti, as it seems, following good development in UEFA, but games such as this one in Scotland can be something hard for a referee coming from his culture, another very important test. To me, the problem of Nordic referees, and I would also include Nyberg (and maybe Rumsas for some aspects) in their games, is that you can see clearly which kind of games they are used to officiate in domestic leagues, and very often they try to do the saem with potentially heated clashes in UEFA, this is not possible. You must scream and give cards. But yes, so far the development of the Norwegian is quite positive and we have to wait before possible final judgments.. we will see this one in Scotland..
I agree Chefren about Taylor, there were not many options. In the QF, there could be one in UCL: Barca/Benfica vs Lille/BVB.
ReplyDeleteAnd somehow I still think Taylor has a chance to get the UCL final, for one reason — What else could be his motivation to continue? Rosetti appreciates him. And sure, last year was a chance at Wembley, however I assume that the final was already promised to some Slovenian powers ;)
Turpin is a busy man. This is his second double appointment. Indeed, very few referees can officiate Roma and survive that without any scratches. Says a lot about Turpin's status.
Makkelie would’ve been an option with AS Roma too, after all he had Roma in the UEL semi-final last season without major problems. The fact they keep him away from AS Roma could indicate something. Lazio vs Plzen is a bit more low key. Nevertheless the game can be challenging, depending on the scoreline.
Is it possible that some VARs are at the stadium? For example Dieperink, he is AVAR on Tuesday and on Wednesday he is off. So, in theory he could travel to Rome on Wednesday.
I appreciate the treatment Makkelie is finally getting from UEFA. Five Champions League matches, and now in the knockout stage, a fairly low-key Europa League match, although an Italian team always adds extra pressure. We’ve seen this route before with Turpin and Vincic, and he would truly deserve it. The same goes for Taylor, but the English teams are strongly represented.
DeleteI don;t like the fact that nowdays in both matches home/away in the same round, the VAR can be from the same nationality.....Ajax again now with Italian VAR, although Bosnian referee, but still it can effect results.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the fact of Taylor and the UCL final, I agree that if they had wanted to give Taylor the final it would have been last season, but we know that Rosetti owes favors to the Slovenes. This season I see it very difficult, tbh.
ReplyDeleteFor me, Makkelie is and will continue to be the number 1 candidate.
The Spanish press talks a lot about a Real-Madrid-Barcelona final, assuming it is, who do you think will be the referee? Curiously, I see this scenario in Munich on May 31 very likely ;)
Very big for Bastien imo ... This guy is having a breakout year and seems to start having much more trust from the committee... I hope he has a good performance
ReplyDeleteOT:
ReplyDeleteChefren, I have a stupid question, because I perhaps also want to share some clips at some point.
From where do you take the clips you post here? Because you do a screen recording right? But since you have to pay for some channels (e.g. DAZN, Sky), is it legally ok to share these screen recordings here on the blog? Because I noticed that you some times share recordings of some Eastern European channels. Is that connected to the topic?
I would really appreciate your answer because I‘m not sure if it’s legal to share a screen recordings from a pay-TV-Plattform.
Where's Oliver?
ReplyDeletevery strong challange 15 seconds in for Makkelie
ReplyDeletePotential SFP incident for Makkelie after just 20 seconds (!)
DeleteTo me, it is more red than yellow, but I can understand the referee and VAR decision.
What saved him was probably that the contact point was still rather low, but I agree with AlexD, more red than yellow
DeleteCan't provide a video about this incident at moment but indeed the point of contact makes it looks like a strong step on foot. This was the reason why VAR supported YC.
DeleteTo me RC, yellow too soft. Square foot with full weight on line above ankle, it could have torn ligaments between tibia and foot, it is definitely not step-on-foot. See 0:58 below:
Deletehttps://sport.sky.it/calcio/europa-league/video/2025/03/13/lazio-viktoria-plzen-dweh-zaccagni-fallo-video
Turpin with a straight red card for DOGSO, very far away from the goal, and maybe another defender who could have intervened.
ReplyDeleteNevertheless, I don't think it's a clear and obvious mistake and VAR must support.
Ball is not going towards the goal, there is another defender. Never DOGSO
Deletethe attacker is alone, straight to the goal with a possibilty to make an easy pass, clear DOGSO for me
DeleteClear DOGSO of course. Attacker is alone, in possession of the ball, 40m away from the keeper and going towards the goal. Big mistake by Hummels and correct decision by Turpin. In my book, VAR expected to intervene in case of YC issued on the field.
DeleteIt will stay as very controversial for the Italian media...
DeleteI must say I'm very much on the fence with this one. My initial reaction was probably more SPA than DOGSO, but there are clear arguments for both. VAR 100% correct to support and should never intervene here in any case imo
DeleteGood Red card by Turpin... spot on. DOGSO
ReplyDeleteVideo of Turpin red card: https://streamin.me/v/2e03eab1
ReplyDeleteFor me, it was a perfect decision.
DeleteClearly the player was heading towards the goal.
Are the 4 criteria for DOGSO respected here?
DeleteIts' a clear DOGSO; excellent decision
DeleteI am really surprised with this red card by Turpin. The action is in the middle of the field, far from the goal, the attacker does not have clear control of the ball. IMO SPA, not DOGSO.
ReplyDeleteI love Turpin and I am fron Bilbao, Athletic Club's fan, but IMO clear mistake by Turpin.
Thanks, finally a meaningful comment
DeleteThere are all three opinions here about the incident: clear red card, supportable YC / RC, wrong RC.
DeleteWell, to me the important thing is that who writes, does that without any secondary interest and just gives his opinion about the incident.
I think VAR was OK to support because situation open to all scenarios.
Don't we also have to discuss, whether it is a foul at all?
DeleteIn the only replay shown in the posted clip, it looks like Hummels plays the ball. Whether he hits the opponent's foot before remains unclear from that angle.
Of course, one would need more angles to answer this question.
Or do I have a wrong perception and you don't think, he plays the ball?
IMO clear foul and YC. I understand that VAR supported the decision, because not obvious mistake.
DeleteTurpin’s red card is nonsense
ReplyDeleteReally tough decision for Turpin. In my opinion, at least one of the 4 criteria for the DOGSO is missing, which is the distance between where the contact occurs and the goal, since the foul is in midfield; however, I think it is fair for VAR to support
ReplyDeleteThinking about it more, since it is objective that one of the 4 criteria is missing, it is equally objective that the RC is wrong. The discussion then should be about VAR: are 3 criteria (one of which, clear control of the ball, not too certain) enough to support the RC?
DeleteThe criticism about Turpin call has already started on Italian press even before half time whistle...
ReplyDeleteLet's see the reaction of the committee, especially Rosetti...
Delete4 criteria for DOGSO :
ReplyDelete1. Distance between foul and goal. Here in France, we learn that this criterion is considered valid from the middle of the field on. It can even be before that, depending on the nature of the action c
2. Direction of the attacker. As per Law 12, the criterion is valid if the attacker goes « globally » towards the goal, which is the case here. The slight deviation on the left is not relevant in this regard.
3. Control of the ball by the attacker. IMO valid too. He is in possession of the ball when fouled. Of course he pushed his ball to make his movement easier, but no one can challenge his possession of the ball.
4. Position and number of defenders. The most debatable for me, but if we look at the dynamics of the action, attacker is at full speed, whereas the defender on the left has just begun his movement.
I think that without this foul, we would have witnessed a duel between attacker and goalie, i.e. an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. Textbook DOGSO for me, even though I agree criterion nr. 4 is debatable.
+1
DeleteWasn't the last man's foul rule removed precisely to avoid such paradoxes, i.e., RCs for clear goal chances given for midfield fouls?
DeleteIMO all the criterias are debatable. I feel sorry for Turpin, I think this is a brave but incorrect decision, and if Roma is eliminated, the criticism by Italian press will be enormous.
DeleteFor me all the criterion are present here, even the 4th, there are 2 attackers in really good place after the foul and the defender is not close enough for me. and Hummels foul is clearly done to denying a clear opportunity is this case. And good first half overall.
DeleteThe last man rule actually never existed, or if it did, I wasn’t born.
DeleteThe « distance » criteria is actually the least relevant of the four. It is just here to prevent RC being issued anywhere on the pitch. 40m away from the goal is more than sufficient to consider the « distance » criterion valid. We can debate on many things on this action, but not that IMO.
Yes, we all know that it did not exist officially but unofficially, and that changes made in the interpretations have gradually led to the concept being downplayed to avoid paradoxes like this one: in my opinion, there cannot be a “clear opportunity to score a goal” in the midfield
DeleteWhen in doubt about a DOGSO, I’ve always been told : ask yourself the question « are we about to see a duel between GK and attacker ? »
DeleteIMO, the answer here is clearly yes.
first of all in my poor opinion, the 4 rules for DOGSO are generally arguable: as "Ref" posted a man in the middle, running and under the screams of the field, should go through one by one and check if each single criteria is satisfied, then take the right decision; all in 2 seconds. This is done by a Personal Computer using a math algorithm not by a person. Globally in the latest 30th years the rules become more and more complicated and elaborated to make hard the job of the referee. Anyway, that's it. The first 3 criteria are fully satisfied, the last could be argued if the defender on top could have recovered. Come on; they are men not machines To me it's DOGSO and Turpin has been perfect
DeleteIn the stadium tonight at San Mames. Amazing match and great atmosphere. With Roma down to 10 and keeper already on a yellow from dissent at DOGSO, what can the referee do to keep the keeper from time wasting? Keeper knows referee isn't giving a second yellow for time wasting, I mean the referee could. What other management options are there aside from adding the time back at the end?
ReplyDeleteZwayer with an OFR.
ReplyDeletehttps://streamin.me/v/d516b4d4
I think he turned the face to the penalty area incident too late and he missed the exact moment for a while (based on the last replay).
3-0 Athletic, now it will be interesting to see whether Turpin will get another game in this KO stage, and this should be rather a possible confirmation about committee assessment of the incident.
ReplyDeleteYou really think that this decision will end his season, seriously ?
DeleteNonsense comment here. It was an error, but not one that can end a season
DeleteI think it's just a supportable call, not a clear red, YC wouldn't have been questioned by VAR.
DeleteBut committee can give a signal with another appointment and this will be interesting to see for me.
Nonsense. Turpin is a referee without a single OFR this season, he is one of the best performers this season, and a safe bet for the next stages of Champions League. Now a correct penalty.
Deleteappropriate advantage by Peljto for Frankfurt's 4th goal. good awareness
ReplyDeleteI find this penalty to Roma very soft, honestly...
ReplyDeleteChefren, I’m astonished. Clear penalty, how can you discuss this?
DeleteI don’t understand… crystal clear PK in my opinion.
DeleteClear penalty, I don’t know how you can say the opposite
DeleteCrystal clear PK there, no question
DeleteGood performance by Makkelie in an edgy and tough game, though not too difficult. Some doubt remains about the possible RC after a few seconds
ReplyDeletedogso in greece judged by zwayer
ReplyDeleteVery clear DOGSO for Zwayer in 88'. No controversy here.
DeleteI was waiting for a clip to post.
DeleteWell, the fact that it was keeper in the midfield, and so empty net, in my opinion must be considered and indeed you can agree with the German's decision.
Perforamnce of the season delivered by Turpin tonight. Excellent red card Dogso, superb managment of the game, correct penalty for Roma, good communication and disciplinary control. Some top play on situations between 45th and 60 minute. Hope he will be kept for UCL semifinals.
ReplyDelete+1
DeleteVery good performance by Makkelie in Rome in very challenging game, calm and firm with very good disciplinary control. His path to something big this season continiue. For me, No.1 CL final candidate.
ReplyDeletehttps://sport.sky.it/calcio/europa-league/video/2025/03/13/lazio-viktoria-plzen-dweh-zaccagni-fallo-video
DeleteMakkelie excellent except 1’ where he should’ve decided for RC, same goes for VAR who should’ve recalled him for OFR. Square foot above line of ankle loading with full weight is RC unless proven otherwise. IMHO clear and obvious error. See video 0:58.
Peljto with very sure performance tonight, not so hard game for him, no crucial situations to discuss about. Hope to se him in UCL quarterfinals, for me No.1 candidate for UECL final/Supercup this year.
ReplyDelete+1
DeleteI’m quite astounded to read all those anti-Turpin comments tonight, even from the most eminent members of this wonderful blog. DOGSO call, IMO fully correct, is at the very least supportable, and PK at the end is crystal clear (if this is not a foul, what is ?).
ReplyDelete« Performance of the season » is exaggerated, but surely a very good performance in a hot game where his expérience was needed. Some good calls and great management, as always with him. If this is the end of his season, good luck at finding better referees for the rest of the European season…
It's just about opinions
DeleteOtherwise the blog wouldn't exist.
And to clarify, I don't think that Turpin season will be over, but I'm interested to see his next assignment after today.
We are just discussing here, UEFA makes the choices, nothing to be worried about!
No problem :)
DeleteAnd our comments are not anti-Turpin, just opinions about his decisions. I love Turpin's style, a fantastic referee. I hope he will referee a UCL semifinal, he deserves it.
DeleteI must honestly say that I was impressed by Makkelie tonight. At the start of the match, he immediately set the tone with two quick yellow cards. The first yellow card was borderline to red, but in the end, it was a full foot-on-foot challenge, so absolutely justifiable. After that, he maintained a clear and consistent line with strong management, also in terms of his expression. This was the old Makkelie as we know him.
ReplyDeleteGood if the old Makkelie is back ! Nice to read that.
DeleteHe knows that the final in Munich belongs to him...
DeleteI agree, it was a challenging game as one could have expected after first leg, with the early challenge by Plzen player, mandatory decision to start with early cards, easy to guess that at that time of the game, another referee could have even missed it... and then, all the rest regular. No controversy in the end with Italian teams is always a good thing.. we'll see the next appointment for the Dutch, deserved after today.
DeleteAs I also watched the Lazio Roma vs Viktoria Plzn I can underline Unknown’s words. After the two early cautions it looked like Makkelie would face a really tough night, but thanks to his strong and adequate actions the game immediately calmed down to never inflame again. Players felt there was not so much to win with play acting and started playing football.
Delete1’ caution maybe could have been more, but the high contact was only a grazing one, with the real impact on the foot. YC therefore okay decision (and for the good of the game the optimal choice, though I know this is not a technical argument). Strong impression tonight!
I couldn’t agree more! Danny Makkelie was absolutely sensational. Every decision was impeccable. He had complete control, maintaining the perfect balance of authority and fairness. His timing was flawless, reading every situation with surgical precision, and he allowed the match to flow effortlessly. It honestly felt like the game was playing out exactly as he envisioned.
DeleteSorry, I disagree Makkelie has been impeccable. IMHO YC at 1’
Deleteis wrong, this should have been RC. The square foot of the Plzen player hits Lazio 10’s on the line above the ankle. Watch footage online please, the collision clearly causes a foot’s distortion, it wouldn’t have happened by hitting just the foot, like a step-on-foot. Clear RC. Rest of the game Makkelie was impeccable.
To me, wrong OFR for Bastien to call a penalty. very much a manufactured penalty by the attacker and definitely not clear to call to the monitor
ReplyDeleteOFR for Bastien in 8' with two MU players watching the screen just behind the ref. Bad scene IMO.
Deleteagree wrong decision to give that penalty.bastien clearly wasnt sure.cant help but think their should be a bigger name on this game
DeleteDisagree. Hard to spot on. Good decisions for both penalties.
DeleteCorrect intervention by Dejalod to give Sociedad a penalty in my opinion
ReplyDeleteCorrect intervention. Clear and obvious mistake by Bastien. Two penalties correct calls so far.
ReplyDeleteVery bad start for Bastien. One (doubtful) OFR for a (doubtful) PK for Sociedad, and now a soft PF for Man United IMO.
ReplyDeleteIncorrect yc for simulation given in Glasgow. Foul was marginalised outside the penalty area so no VAR intervention
ReplyDeletehttps://streambug.org/cv/0c0740
DeleteIt's interesting.
I think Eskas booked player also because he thought about a penalty area incident (but it was outside). Simulation outside the box very rare to be punished.
I find the VAR intervention in Manchester a very correct one, while the second penalty a rather soft one, but supportable. However, never VAR stuff and for me rather play on.
ReplyDelete1) https://streamff.com/v/27ec0f92
2) https://streamff.com/v/3dbc500d
But his position of the monitor at Old Trafford, right in front of fans, terrible for me. Maybe it wasn't possible to put it in a different zone...
Old Trafford is obviously a classic, old English stadium, with stands very close to the pitch. Same problems exist at other stadiums such as Anfield and Villa Park. Will be a problem next season as well when Nottingham Forest also likely qualify
DeleteNot a great first half from Eskas. In real danger of losing control of the game
ReplyDeleteIt's not his fault that Rangers are playing agresively.
Delete6 cards and we can all of them are justified.
2 can be discussed,1 Talisca's one for diving and now at the end Diomande's dangerous play.
Soft PK in Manchester IMO.
ReplyDeleteThis one created by attacker.
DeleteDefinitely not the best display by Bastien, after very good games recently, now the poor one. It can happen...
Positive and nice words by Roma coach Ranieri, he said that he considers the red card to his player very clear. He can't blame his guys.
ReplyDeleteAfter today, it's even more without explanations the statements he made about Stieler, he is honestly a coach who would never say anything against the referees I really don't know what happened on that occasion in Porto.
Anyway, Roma seems to have accepted the decision, very important.
However Mancini, directly involved in the incident, said that in his opinion it was yellow and he tried to convince Turpin, who replied that for him all the others players were ruled out and the attacker would have gone alone towards the goal.
Chefren, I believe now Ranieri has retracted what he had said immediately after the game. He said he had seen it in a hurry on a mobile phone, therefore he had the impression RC on Hummels was right. If you read Italian press he now says it was harsh, which is also my impression as DOGSO’s condition #4 is flimsy.
DeleteAnother penalty given at Old Trafford..
ReplyDeleteThat's an extremely cheap penalty. If that's the level Bastien wants to go for we'll see 10+ before this game is over. Very, very unconvincing performance from him so far.
ReplyDeleteCorrect penalty by Bastien. Clear foul by spanish defensor.
ReplyDelete3rd penalty of the game. Terrible decision in my view. Impossible for defender to move out of the way. Attacker runs into defender. Bad call
ReplyDeleteBastien as a ref had good matches before this year, but for highest level unfortunately poor ref..
ReplyDeleteCorrect RC for DOGSO by Bastien.
ReplyDeleteNow a DOGSO Red for Bastien, quite an extraordinary game.
ReplyDeleteSorry but this is quite funny to see all these comments against Bastien Pks. Where fans were yesterday with Scharer extremely soft pk against lille ?
ReplyDeleteFor the record I disagree with the Scharer PK yesterday and Bastien’s third today, but I agree with the first too from Bastien today. The second and third ones today are very subjective.
DeleteYesterday there were comments about the penalty by Schaerer and some people said It Was soft. So the same today With Bastien... Just opinions I must repeat once again. We are discussing and nothing more. I don't understand why one should be against a Referee!
DeleteCorrect DOGSO now, surely United see this through. You have to say the (incorrect) penalty call in United's favour really changed the game...
ReplyDeleteThe attacker tripped the defender. Definitely not a DOGSO. Defender was running and the attacker made contact with him.
DeleteWell that's it for Bastien this season. Nightmare.
ReplyDeletereally don't understand what Bastien is doing there... Now it looked like e penalty annulled by VAR but without OFR
ReplyDeleteNo. Manchester attacker said to referee : no penalty mister do he changes his mind. When you see replays, grey zone for pk.
DeleteOMG Bastien!
ReplyDeleteBastien with an awful display tonight. Dear me
ReplyDeleteLet’s not be hyperbolic, he made 1-2 mistakes and got two other key decisions correct.
Delete1-2 mistakes? He got 3 (!) penalty calls wrong. First one required an OFR, then one dive, then finally and most embarrassing of all the (not) guilty defender took pity on referee and admitted it wasn't a foul.
DeleteNow this is only mentioning the penalty decisions, he was hardly showcasing a sense of control during the rest of the game.
Sorry MQ but are you Pierluigi Collina ? You seems to be an expert of non binairy decision. You are ridiculous with your bashing.
DeleteI don't dislike Bastien at all, but tonight was a shocker. I don't see the need to try to pretend like he had an acceptable game when it really was not.
DeleteMaybe I'm being too harsh because I enjoyed an even game in first half which was ruined by a severe mistake at the start of second half. Then it went gradually even more downhill from there. At the end of the day referee was the main character of the game and that's very rarely a desirable thing.
Seems like Bastien changed his decision after initially whistling a penalty, because the ManUtd player told him it wasn‘t a foul. What a fair gesture in such a circumstance by the player, because it wasn‘t a dive either.
ReplyDeleteWould be very interesting to read Fröhlich's report tonight, have a feeling there might be a few not so nice words in there...
ReplyDeleteBastien and his luck of unfortunate matches continues.
ReplyDeleteWe're seeing some very soft penalties, exactly what Rosetti doesn't want. Yesterday Scharer and Kruzliak, today Bastien... I think Rosetti will be furious. I think the season is over for several referees: Scharer, Bastien, Kruzliak, Nyberg, Mariani, Meler.
ReplyDeleteNot the case in Glasgow tonight.
DeleteVery bad game from Bastien tonight. He honestly has a very strange career... He is arguably the best referee in Ligue 1 over the last 10 years, is overall involved in less controversies than eg. Turpin or Letexier in the domestic league, his games are always smooth... But when the European competitions arrive, it's 50/50. You can get the "Ligue 1" Bastien, a top class ref, which I was happy to see in several games this season, or the "European" Bastien, making nonsense calls and whistling pretty much everything. I thought it was bad luck, but there are too many examples of "bizarre" games... Honestly for me, you could end this game with 0 penalty whistled and nobody would talk about it. Terrible night after a pretty good European season, and I'm sorry to say that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all your points. Bastien can have 90% perfect games but the other 10% will be a complete disaster. Whereas Turpin will have 70% perfect games but only 1% will be a complete disaster
DeleteFully agree with this !
DeleteVery interesting potential penalty for Fenerbahce. Probably not quite enough contact for a clear error
ReplyDeleteFenerbache not happy with Eskas for not giving a penalty
ReplyDeleteEskas is begging for the match to go to decisive penalties lol. In my opinion, there were elements to signal the penalty in this extra time
ReplyDeleteThere were also elements not to signal a penalty, which I think Eskås was correct to do
DeleteMore elements were for penalty than against imo.
DeleteElliot, i respect your opinion, but take into consideration that the Fenerbahçe player did not force the fall, so Eskas was very focused on not scoring instead of thinking of a second possibility in the game. The Norwegian judge decided what was best, but it is a discursive game.
Delete11 YC. An unusual number by European standards.
ReplyDeleteHow is that not a pen for fener. No var review either with clear contact. Scandal.
ReplyDeleteYou guys saying that’s a penalty are crazy… that’s too little contact to even kill a bug, it would be insane to award a penalty kick for such a small touch.
ReplyDelete+1
Deleteagree nothing incident
DeleteAgree, no penalty imo
DeleteMourinho on Eskas an the 4th referee:
ReplyDelete“The referee and the VAR decided we should go to penalties, three penalties in 120 minutes... On the penalties, we missed three [appeals] and Rangers go through, but I think my team deserves everything from me, my supporters and Turkey as a country, as the last Turkish team in the competition. I’m sad, it was a dream to go through to try and reach the final.
“The fourth official was a nice guy, not arrogant like the referee, trying to do his job. He kept our bench calm, I was the only one calm, especially the ones in front of the laptop, it’s difficult to control.
Does anyone know Srdjan Jovanovic's situation? Why does he no longer have class A games or been invited to Elite courses?
ReplyDeleteI remember the controversial Italy-England but is it still the reason? thanks
Here the penalty appel by Fenerbahçe at the end of the game in Glasgow: https://streambug.org/cv/da1a38
ReplyDeleteGoing back at the YC he issued for simulation earlier in the game, the approach of the Norwegian was clear. In this case you can say that attacker just put himself ahead of defender to get the contact, but indeed, the contact exists, and this is evident penalty for many people... personally I like this PLAY ON but it's impossible in modern football.
It wasn't an easy game for him, I predicted that...
I like this play on, I don't see a clear contact. I prefer this play on than the soft penalties we have seen in Manchester
DeletePretty solid performance by Eskas, in terms of very big pressure through the game and hot atmosphere around. Good disciplinary control, no penalty to Fener at least supportable. So, expect to se Eskas in one more game until the end of season. We will see.
ReplyDeleteEarly QF predictions
ReplyDeleteBodo - Lazio: Stieler / Peljto
Tottenham - Frankfurt: Makkelie / Massa
Rangers - Bilbao: Kruzliak / Siebert
Lyon - ManUnited: Schärer / Eskas
Worth pointing out, that Taylor also here (like in CL) has no game available.
Predictions for CL Quarterfinals.
DeletePSG - Aston Villa
Vincic - Zwayer
Arsenal - Real Madrid
Turpin - Kovacs
Barcelona - Borussia Dortmund
Oliver - Marciniak
Bayern - Inter
Makkelie - Letexier
By the way, we forgot that will be another final at the end of this season. And that is the National League final. Which referee is favourite for the final?
ReplyDeleteI really hope Turpin; he deserve an extra final match due to his outstanding performances
DeleteTurpin would indeed deserve an appointment like that - but of course, France always a very strong team and can make that impossible.
DeleteAfter Inter - Feyenoord, Manchester United - Real Sociedad takes the scene as extremely challenging and interesting game under the refereeing point of view on this week.
ReplyDeleteBastien, coming from very good games, had definitely a weak display, with many controversial decisions. It's easy to say that with another referee, given how easily he whistled some penalties, this game could have had a fully different story, but of course, unless they are clear and obvious mistakes, one must always accept referee's decisions.
I also think that VAR was clearly wrong in at least one circumstance.
6' Penalty after OFR to Real Sociedad
https://streambug.org/cv/bb5c27
13' Penalty to Manchester United, supported by VAR
https://streambug.org/cv/6d606d
48' Penalty to Manchester United, supported by VAR
https://streambug.org/cv/2e833f
63' RC for DOGSO, supported by VAR
https://streambug.org/cv/dff04d
84' Penalty revoked without OFR. Referee changing decision by himself? VAR malfunction (only communication with audio?)
https://streambug.org/cv/eae7f7
As for Bilbao, I consider the RC supportable decision, in the sense that YC wouldn't have been changed in red by VAR.
About the rest, after a more detailed analysis, I think VAR did a mistake by supporting penalty in 63'. That's a terrible call for the standards of Rosetti and committee. The defender does absolutely nothing, you have even arguments to call a foul in favor of defender, if you want to stop the play. But very expected decision is play on... to me, this penalty shouldn't have been confirmed.
About the incident in 84' is very hard to understand what exactly happened, referee entered in communication with VAR, or at least apparently, but he didn't make any OFR. Changing decision based only on what players were saying? Unacceptable, even if leading to a correct decision. VAR issues and no chances to go deep in the OFR? This can explains more, in case. However, it wasn't a penalty.
After many very good games, this was the worst night for the French, however, given how he was doing recently, shouldn't be a big issue for him, maybe he reached the maximum, hard to see another appointment after this performance, considering also two French o be appointed ahead of him.
About the strange incident in 84', UEFA site without detailed information as well.
DeleteJust reported: "VAR check in progress"
Nothing about the original decision of penalty by Bastien and then the change.
Very poor impresion by Bastien. I like this referee, but sometimes his performances are catastrophic. The second penalty (13') is unbelieveable and the fourth one (84') is a terrible mistake. I don't like his management in this match
DeleteIf you look closer at the scene in 48': He declines the appeal in first place (which would have been the right decision) but suddenly, out of nowhere, he changes his mind and points to the penalty spot...
DeleteAbsolutely not understandable for me
After watching it again: he seems to wait for an advantage. absolutely shocking decision to award a penalty for that (and i am a ManUnited fan...)
Delete84': One reported hypothesis is, that the attacker said to Bastien, that it was no foul. The short moment 0:25-0:30 could support this idea.
DeleteSo when the VAR check was indicated, he had already changed the decision on the field.
But not sure, whether this can be confirmed.
In this action, it's been report that Dorgu tell Bastien that the defender didn't touch him and that there was no foul, so he overturn it without waiting for VAR. Good sportmanship there
DeleteSrdačan pozdrav.
