Just to answer some comments on the blog: there will be WC coverage with appointments and discussions for all games, but differently from previous editions for sure it will not be so detailed. Not a single post for each game, will try to include more games in one discussion or something like that. Unfortunately I can't wake up in the night at that time and I don't have motivations to do that. Really sorry to all, bu nothing more is possible on my part this time. For those who are more enthusiast than me, enjoy this WC.
ReplyDeleteAre there A game predict the referee like WC 22 sir?
Deletehttps://whatref.com/
DeleteAnd I also do some predictions on my blog. Published it just this morning. Good luck with some predictions https://forms.gle/W9ZPNpzaosz1AQzN6
DeleteDiego612 with 2 of 3 calls correctly as far back as April 10. Well done 👏🏽 https://law5-theref.blogspot.com/2026/04/2026-fifa-world-cup-selected-officials.html?showComment=1775765287098&m=1#c9131421602122047454
ReplyDeleteOn the appointments: good sign for Sampaio, the referee for the opener should be always considered as candidate for the final, but this time we know, with Brazil and Argentina it could be less likely. However, for sure they will give him a lot in case of good performances.
ReplyDeleteTo follow, big trust on the Egyptian for sure, an early debut for a CAF referee at this WC, given the current situation, was maybe a bit hard to predict. The level of the game can justify the choice and maybe we can say this assignment is the first visible "effect" of a WC with more games than the previous editions.
The other big name for CONMEBOL will be in charge of Canada, that's easy to explain, they are another host, otherwise the assignment, with a game like this, would have been by far lower. And here I could already start critizicing FIFA for how they work, but we know. Making all pleased, but not caring about people. Absolutely unexpected in my opinion, let me repeat it, by a person like Collina.
Last but not least, Makkelie with USA opener, nothing to add, very good start in terms of consideration for him.
Agree with most , most serious disagreement is with Makkelie for US game . Danny can be influenced by "outside" forces . Expect some controversy over decisions for US & against Paraguay. Controversy if US loses , Mr. Trump would not be happy.
DeleteSampaio is a logical choice, coming from a QF at the last tournament. He was the favourite among the non-UEFA referees in discussions about the appointment.
ReplyDeleteTello and Makkelie in the two other opening games are also sensible. Maybe a slight surprise to see two CONMEBOL referees though.
Good sign of trust for Makkelie after no KO game in 2022. But he had a QF at the CWC, so no surprise and a deserved appointment.
Mohamed might be the most surprising one in this set, because FIFA tends to go big on the first days. Also KOR-CZE is not sonorous, but on paper the game for second place in group A. So at least remarkable, that he has been chosen above e.g. Ghorbal. Will be interesting to follow the CAF pecking order during the tournament.
Benitez as 4th official shows that not only support referees will work in that role (but still could be a exception made for the opener). The obvious choice would have been Claus there (and Herrera for Tello btw), but they preferred to mix more.
On the VAR side, the most interesting point is, that del Cerro Grande and not Higler works as main VAR for Makkelie, indicating more trust for the Spanish official.
Gallo above Toski for Sampaio could be expected, given the experience of the Colombian in that role.
I was expected that will be a CONMEBOL for the opening game at WC 2026. Because it`s start in Mexico, a latin country with a hot atmosphere. So, I think Sampaio could handle better the game than Oliver. I don`t have problems with the other appointments.
ReplyDeleteWill situation with Artan affect other appointments in a way that some of the referees that were originally planed as reserves will get a game instead of him?
ReplyDeleteIt does seem as though everyone has forgotten that Artan was himself a reserve.
DeleteIt doesn't matter; Mr. Artan is a member of a squad. All the other should declare their solidarity with him and warn FIFA and the USA that they will not officiate at any game in any personal capacity, unless Artan is allowed to join his fellow refs.
DeleteDoesn't matter at all Mikael W. You can't accept an order where the hosting nation decides which referees they want. A now low even for FIFA that they don't demand the US to let him in.
DeleteOh right, Mikael, that really changes everything /s smh
DeleteI know the free time is an issue for all of us, but for better UX may I suggest to use bold text also for the name of the teams? Also, could you please add the date, time and location for each game?
ReplyDeleteIt's really an effort with so many games, for me. I have to be honest here. Will try to do that, nevertheless.
DeleteDon't bother, thank you for everything already. If we are able to click on the link for Law5, we are also able to get to our favorite sports website and doublecheck
DeleteThese are my predictions for Saturday's matches:
ReplyDeleteQatar – Switzerland: Said Martinez
Brazil – Morocco: Francois Letexier
Haiti – Scotland: Cristian Garay
Australia – Türkiye: Yael Falcon
Mehdi Rahmouni is born in France, but he has Morroco roots. so, I don't think it will be Letexier. why not Turpin for Brazil game? do you remember Scharer with Almeida at Euro 2024?
DeleteYes, it's logical. For me, Turpin and Taylor are options.
DeleteShould be oliver over letexier
DeleteQAT-SWI - Barton (SLV)
DeleteBRA-MAR - Araki (JPN)
HAI-SCO - Kawana (NZL)
AUS-TUR - Elfath (USA)
"Turkey and Australia are in the same group with USA, so this assignment won't be possible."
Delete@Fab GX: Yusuke Araki can probably be ruled out: On one hand, he traveled with only a single assistant and is therefore likely intended solely for the role of fourth official. On the other hand, he is already in action as such at the USA - Paraguay match and will not be refereeing a game 4,000 km away 21 hours later. We will probably also only see Campbell-Kirk Kawana-Waugh as the fourth official, perhaps at the match you have in mind.
DeleteSorry I inverted by mistake:
DeleteQAT-SWI - Barton (SLV)
BRA-MAR - Elfath (USA)
HAI-SCO - Kawana (NZL)
AUS-TUR - Ramos (MEX)
BRA-MAR - Turpin(FRA)
Delete@Fab GX: Ismail Elfath was born in Casablanca. I don't think he will referee a Morocco game either. ;-)
DeleteKawana will have been called in as solely a “reserve”, correct?
DeleteHas it ever happened in the history of World Cup that a referee officiated both the opening and final matches? Sampaio seemed like a possible finals candidate to me, assuming this year's finalist will be CONCACAF/CONMEBOL, along with Ramos and Elfath. Should we now consider him only as a possible semifinalist? Am I forgetting other finals candidates?
ReplyDeleteThe two Argentinians Elizondo and Pitana in 06 and 18
DeleteHonestly I dont se Arturo Ramos as final candidate. Yes,from CONMEBOL definetley Sampaio, from Concacaf definetely Elfath,From Uefa a lot of them, but I would like to see performacnes on the pitch, than to speak about candidates.
ReplyDeleteIs there a list of predictions for every game which referee wi be assigned?
ReplyDeleteLike game 33: ……
Game 34:……
Surely we have better uses of time than to predict dozens of matches. With the most respect, just watch and enjoy the spectacle mate!
DeleteGood appointments altogether but on the negative side I don't think I was that much impressed by Sampaio performance at the Qatar WC22 quarter final, he was over the place guess the stakes where really very high and to finish i think the Brazilian will do well in the opener
ReplyDeleteWill all appointments be 3 days ahead of matches at approximately same time or was this exception for opening matches?
ReplyDeleteSo no more "Offside VAR", right? Just 2 (VAR & AVAR) and a Support VAR.
ReplyDeleteyeah that's why there is not that much VAR even with more games, i think it went from 5 ref in the VAR room to 3 this WC
DeletePredictions for tmrw
ReplyDeleteQatar Switzerland - Penso
Brazil Morocco - Oliver
Haiti Scotland - Makhadmeh
Australia Turkiye - Falcon
If you're a US based referee and you voted for this administration in 2024. Congratulations! You voted for this mess! Pat yourself on the back and give yourself a round of applause. Because YOU, yes YOU are a guilty accomplice of robbing your fellow referee Omar Artan of the biggest dream any and all football referees can accomplish.
ReplyDeleteI hope to never share a football pitch with any of you. I will expose you for what you are. Because sports should UNITE not divide the world.
For all of you who will still be watching after the Artan issue. The fact that an Iraqi player was separated, isolated, and detained at the airport for over 7 hours. And the troubles the Iran delegation has faced (and will continue to endure). Well done! You're part of the problem. I for one, prefer to be on the right side of history. I'll wait for the 2030 edition.
This last piece is for the blog creators/moderators. If you're not mentally into it or if your hearts aren't in it either for this world cup. Follow what your hearts are telling you and skip it all together. God willing there will be other competitions for you to moderate.

"According to Artan, he spent 11 hours in an immigration interview after arriving in Miami. He said he was later placed in a holding cell for several more hours before eventually being sent back to Istanbul. Throughout the process, he said no explanation was given for why he was denied entry."
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the United States of Divisiveness and Hate.
This individual was seeking admission to the United States. Upon further inspection by CBP, derogatory information, including association with suspected members of terror organizations, was discovered making the traveler ineligible for admission to the United States under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The traveler was refused admission and given immigration forms that provide the section of law used to complete an expedited removal under 8235 of the INA. President Trump's administration will not allow any security threat to enter our country - full stop.”
Delete"Suspected ties to suspected people."
DeleteSo that's all it takes? Hmmm, seems totally legit. NOT! Especially coming from this reality show regime. Staffed by incompetent and unqualified people who are known for their constant stream of lies and lack of transparency.
When Russia and Qatar can be viewed as more welcoming during their World Cups. The US is definitely losing its identity.
November 2026 and November 2028 cannot come fast enough.
They were going to find a reason to not allow him to enter the country one way or another
DeleteSadly, very true Neil. Very true.
DeleteJust another example of the USA "earning the hate".
This framing is actually a cop out. It was obvious that the US were going to behave like this, and Artan's expulsion probably is consistent with the overall manner that the relevant body deal with Somali entries on a day-to-day basis. One can debate the right and wrongs of that.
DeleteHOWEVER: one can understand the Americans dealing in a severe manner with spectators, even if it is quite unpleasant. The barring of some team members, even if absolutely on the edge of permissible behaviour for a hosting country (and probably beyond it), the rationale at least follows some logic. But, what has happened with Artan -- approved by FIFA themselves (ffs) -- is completely indefensible. It was obvious that a government official, who himself surely percieves soccer as an activity of latines and a white-collar class, would see it in his political and personal interests to say "we will make no exceptions to our rules for a referee". You could see this happening a mile off, and indeed we were given this hilariously American quote from one such person:
"I don't really care what you do for a living. The law is still the law. If you don't meet the qualifications to come into the country, we're not letting you in just because we want you to referee a game."
The use of the final 'we' rather does stick in the throat. So, it was incumbent on FIFA and Infantino to foresee this happening and ensure that Artan was processed differently; because, clearly, he doesn't constitute a threat to US national security (ffs). Capitals needed: FIFA COMPLETELY, AND SHAMEFULLY, FAILED IN THIS TASK! Their failure falls somewhere between incompetence (the list being announced sooo close to the tournament) and sheer cravenness.
It should also be said that the reporting of this case has been very poor. Even people who should know better, like Dale Johnson, wrote articles stating that Artan was "the best African referee" - no, Artan was actually no6 for FIFA in the unofficial consideration in Africa, and he was only slated to be a reserve referee. Now, let me state this unequivocally: THIS DOES NOT CHANGE THE PRINCIPLE THAT WHAT HAPPENED IS WRONG, AND SHAMEFUL. Mr Johnson is intelligent enough to know these facts - but it contravened the political viewpoint of his employer. As people with subject knowledge, it is actually incumbent on us to state these facts - even if to omit them coheres to our own (and certainly it coheres to my own) points of view about wider issues.
Those arguing for collective action by the referees, or that Artan could work solely in Can/Mex, are in cloud-cuckoo land.
But, finally, let me say it again, the ultimate conclusion from this sad affair should be: shame, shame on you Mr Infantino.
This whole mess has its roots in Gianni Infantino’s cosiness to USA's regime leader.
Delete"The best African referee" refers to CAF award most likely :)
DeleteIt has always been transparent that athletes, officials and tourists from several parts of the world will have trouble entering the US. We can't just act surprised now.
DeleteFIFA delegates voted for the North American bid over Morocco in knowledge of the visa issues because the expected revenue is twice as high.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_2026_FIFA_World_Cup_bid#Controversies
Omar Abdulkadir Artan becomes now a hero for his country (and not only).
ReplyDeletehttps://streambug.org/cv/efa55b
Sometimes, life keeps strange surprises, the young Somali is now a world figure without doing much on his part.
I hope that he can quickly put this ordeal behind him and remain focused on his development as a referee. I can’t wait to see him at the 2029 Club World Cup and the 2030 World Cup.
DeleteI completely understand the unrest there is with this Us Administration but people shouldn’t be blaming people on this blog for voting a certain candidate. This is a referee blog not a political centre.
ReplyDeleteThe Leader of the US Regime has singlehandedly turned the world's greatest sporting event into his personal political puppet to advance his reprehensible agenda. So sport and politics have become intertwined. That is what we are left with.
DeleteI refuse to remain silent and complicit. And will continue to say "you voted for this" to all who erred in judgement back in 2024.
#BOYCOTT #EARNINGTHEHATE
Well go and start an anti US administration activist blog, stop spreading subjective information aswell.

DeleteMisinformation?
DeleteNah, miss me with that false accusation.
The only ones spreading and spewing misinformation on a daily basis is the US Regime leader and his minions.
What regime?
Deletehttps://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7344372/2026/06/09/infantino-trump-world-cup-visas/
ReplyDeleteI am so sad to say this scandal around Artan is just the first, but not the last one for sure. What will we say when Trump's "special troops" enter stadiums just to arrest workers and fans and then make uncontrolled deportations to their horrific mass camps in Guatemala or elsewhere in Central America?Welcome to the New World Order - and the role of Fifa here is so absolutely disgusting. Sorry guys, we cannot just close our eyes to those events and have to support those trying to enjoy the sport feast AND protect the poor rest of American Democracy!
DeletePlease stop your leftist propaganda here. Thanks.
Delete@referee Analyst: If you are a racist, you shouldn't be a ref...
DeleteI am looking what happened from two sides , the side concerns fifa i believe that what happened in the first place insults fifa and its president , the other side of the coin is that what happened to arten , to some players , or even to the coaching staff of certain national team demonstrates the exclusionary policy practiced by despicable trump
ReplyDeleteOfficial Appointments
ReplyDeleteQatar - Switzerland : Martinez
Brazil - Morocco : Vincic
Haiti - Schotland : Ghorbal
Australia - Turkey : Valenzuela
Big game for vincic
DeleteAfter the Artan ordeal, perhaps it would have been better for FIFA to not have Valenzuela cross borders again… who knows what can happen.
DeleteSecond set of assignment: Brazil - Morocco takes the scene here, with Vincic appointed for the game. For me not exactly a big game (still, Brazil very favorite team against a CAF side) but surely something in which a big name from UEFA was expected. I would describe a bigger game than this one a tie like Brazil - UEFA Team.
ReplyDeleteTo follow, average assignments (of course my opinion!) for Martinez, could have been expected in that game, maybe not the poorest one but still decent, and Valenzuela in AUS - TUR.
Absolutely sub standard assignment for Ghorbal, with Haiti (among the weakest national teams) involved. However, the fact that there will be Scotland maybe raises a bit the bar (they are crazy about refereeing), but the game should be more than easy.
In the end, the Egyptian referee has by far more consideration at moment than the Algerian, OK, it's still the first game, but one could have easily predicted Ghorbal for something more, to begin the experience. In the end he is allegedly reported to be the best CAF official in recent times, but at moment in my opinion this was never clearly seen on the pitch, not even in terms of assignments.
Even worse for Hernandez hernandez: confederation rule has been broken for him, fourth official to Haiti, the plans seem to be clear for the Spanish referee, once he has been called at this tournament...
Do you think it is an realistic scenario that Hernandez only get appointments als fourth official in the hole tournament?
DeleteI am not sure whether the comparatively unattractive match can actually be considered a disappointment for Mustapha Ghorbal. It is possible that FIFA wants to assign the first matches specifically to particularly "trusted" referees in order to ensure a smooth start to the tournament. His duel between the third and fourth of the group according to the FIFA ranking could also decide in the direct encounter who, via the detour as one of the best eight third-placed teams, advances to the round of 16. In this respect, in my opinion, it is more significant than, for example, BRAHAI. With (Hdz)², I consider it realistic that he replaced Omar Artan at short notice. HAISCO with an African referee would certainly also have been quite suitable for the Somali as the fourth official. If one did not want to make large-scale changes, the Spaniard may have volunteered because he had the most rest days.
DeleteA CONCACAF referee outside their top three makes perfect sense for QAT-SUI. Not a great game, however probably with more attention than others due to the Saturday evening primetime slot in Europe, Africa and Arabia.
DeleteIn BRA-MAR one of the big UEFA names as expected.
Ghorbal's game indeed below expectations for him. Remarkable that CAF gets a second game before AFC gets a first.
Quite expected to see a CONMEBOL referee in AUS-TÜR, should be a rather open game, so someone of Valenzuela's level seems sensible.
Indeed interesting to see Hernandez as 4th official.
It could mean, that Artan was planned initially for this game and the Spanish replaces him.
It also could mean, that Hernandez only is a support referee.
Or neither, and it is just a normal appointment without deeper meaning...
Honestly.
DeleteAfter that game at the Allianz Arena and the way things went after Bayern vs. Real, I wouldn't name Vincic for a close game that should define the first place in Group C. Excuse me, but in my view, FIFA is taking a big risk with this appointment.
I was expecting Oliver, Turpin, and even Marciniak (depending on his physical condition after his injury period).
Vincic also had a very poor showing in the SWE-POL playoffs, both sides will agree on that (though the Poles more loudly so for obvious reasons).
DeleteAlso surprise by Vincic appointment in this big game, not a great showing lately and tbf if he have a bad game his competition might stopped after the group phase.
DeleteLincoln, I disagree with this argument, I think it's unfair and also impossible to go back to CL performances for appointing referees at this WC.
DeleteWe can mention a contrary example: Kovacs one year ago after a good CL final, he had a nigthmare in the CWC game he officiated.
FIFA is FIFA, UEFA is UEFA.
I think with Vicnic one thing to remember is his remarkable ability to handle matches controversy free. I know he got burned in the cl semi final but generally he stays out of controversy
DeleteI disagree, and in my view, you're relativizing.
DeleteGetting burned by a controversy and staying away from it doesn't change much. So were the Poles wrong to contest Vincic's decisions in the playoffs?
You are misreading the importance of the match, Haiti versus Scotland. In terms of the importance on the field, and not about the global acclaim, it’s a far more important game than a Brazil versus a Morocco. Haiti and Scotland both absolutely require a win (ideally by multiple goals), as a draw would be disastrous towards both teams’ prospects. Haiti’s quality is NOT so far below Scotland’s that this is guaranteed to be a non-competitive matchup.
DeleteRemember this is a World Cup where eight of twelve third-place finishers advance. The distinction between the teams number 3 and number 4 in a group, is extremely important. And the goal difference, in that area of the table, is a “big deal”!
Im astonished that this blog has been turned into a leftist national convention. Politics and football dont go and while there may be many problems with quite unpopular figures, im sure we all have two eyes and ears and dont need to be told by individual activists spreading misinformation telling us who we should or shouldn’t vote for, or how wrong we are if we have voted for someone. People are forgetting that they are insulting democratically elected heads of state. They should also stop sending news links that ara very biased and untrue. Lets enjoy the World Cup, and my condolences are with the unfortunate Somali referee who of course should NOT be in this situation.

DeleteWell said
DeleteHow utterly bizarre to pretend like politics isn't at the very core of this tournament. And you're making it awfully clear which "side" you're supporting.
DeleteYou can in no way ignore the US politics in a US world cup.
Politics and football don't go, and yet people are being barred from participating over politics. Politics plays a role in almost everything in society. And democratically elected officials are not above criticism. This neutral gimmick exposes your true opinions by the wall. Shameless.
DeleteDo tell "ScotRef", why is the "unfortunate Somali referee" in this predicament in the first play. Surely has nothing to do with Trump and his policies, right? Definitely unrelated. What a ridiculous statement.
DeleteExcuse me I’ve been very neutral and actually it’s none of your business who im supporting. I’m stating the obvious, it’s clear what’s going on in the US isn’t acceptable, but like I’ve said we don’t need to be lectured by leftist activists on who to vote etc…We are all capable of observing what’s going on and we don’t need fake news articles and misinformation being spread on a referee blog. I haven’t ignored what’s going on but there becomes a point where it’s tiring to hear!
DeleteTake it into your own hands and organise the tournament in another location or set up an activist blog against this US administration nobody is stopping you, but please not here.
YK, you have completely ignored the fact that the statement is referring to individuals that are using this blog as a leftist activist page and not towards individuals criticising what’s going on with the Somali referee who I believe was Wrongly rejected a chance to become the first Somali referee at a FIFA World Cup.
DeleteAre you Trump in disguise, or do you just love his rhetoric? "Leftist activists" and "fake news". My god, get a grip. Yes you're soooo neutral.
DeleteThere is no way to ignore politics when the head of FIFA is openly on his knees in front of your orange haired idol. Any discussion about this World Cup can and naturally should touch on the disgraceful Trump administration as it clearly affects not just the tournament but even FIFA as a whole.
Asking people not to mention it and talk about these serious issues is a way of taking an active stance to defend them.
It’s true they are leftist activists sharing news that has no evidence to support it; fake news.
DeleteMy orange Idol 😂 I haven’t said one positive thing about the man, oh dear oh dear. You really are so far out of touch.
Delete"People are forgetting that they are insulting democratically elected heads of state"
DeleteHitler was democratically elected head of state btw
Kaer, get a grip of reality and understand that I’m not saying that he’s exempt from criticism I’m just saying that here of all places on a referee blog… You all like to take the situation way beyond the context and half of you don’t contribute to anything on this blog.
DeleteWhat’s remarkable about leftists is that they accuse others of having a political bias while openly and unapologetically pushing their own. 🫠 ! Support to Scotref !
DeletePeople on this blog were doing nothing controversial beyond holding FIFA accountable to their self-proclaimed "core values and visions" and Infantino accountable to his promises. You came in, calling them "left wing activists" , "spreading misinformation" and "fake news" for it.
DeleteScotRef, you are far off holding a neutral position, you are actively spreading right-wing, nationalist hate-speech. If you don't subscribe to the core values of football, you are not only wrong on this blog, but wrong representing football in general.
People on this blog were sending news articles that had absolutely nothing to do with refereeing and were stating to all referees that if they voted for a certain person that they where at fault for Artan not being allowed in to the USA.
DeleteNot only are those accusations untrue, they are unnecessary and leftist.
My whole point from the beginning is that this is a blog about refereeing but my words have been taken out of context and there are people here saying things that are completely untrue and they have no evidence to back the statements they are making. I haven’t said one good word about the US administration, I’m simply suggesting to take your news articles and your untrue comments to another place. Everyone has a right to criticise FIFA and its president, and let me be clear I’m the first to do so.
I must finalise by saying it’s so sad watching what this blog is becoming and seeing usernames that have never been seen before appear from nowhere is surprising but actually all you need to know, if I have caused anyone any harm by my comments I must apologise but please know that it’s only the truth and nothing but the truth.
Cowardly backtracking. What exactly was “fake news” and “misinformation”? The kickoff to this “world” cup has been a mess, largely due to the inaugural winner of the “FIFA peace prize”, who also has the backing of Infantino. What’s happening is inherently political. Anyways, wishing the officials and players who will get to participate the ‘best’.
DeleteI’m not backtracking I just don’t have the energy to deal with leftist trolls your boring now.
DeleteIt’s not about left or right (even if that seems to be very important to you). It’s about not remaining neutral when injustice occurs. One can only condemn what happened to Artan. And of course that is political. To say that sport and politics should be kept separate is like closing your eyes so as not to look. Sport is becoming increasingly political. More and more money is flowing into it. And the last World Cup and this one didn’t exactly shine in terms of respect for human rights, so we need courageous people to highlight that.
DeleteTo be honest, I find it quite fitting in a forum for referees, to talk about circumstances related to the World Cup. And if these are related to a right-wing extremist government, you can definitely address that.
DeleteFor who wants a little fun during the World Cup. Predict the referees who officiate in the final rounds of the tournament https://forms.gle/PW6kGPS5tdtg2aCRA
ReplyDeleteIt's free to participate and the one who guesses best wins a Dutch Referee Blog whistle.
Have a nice World Cup, all.
I expected a bit bigger game for Ghorbal's first appointment
ReplyDeleteI think this game could be quite intense and physical.
DeleteI concur with Euro SoccerRef, especially given the styles of the teams and the desperation of the match. I will repeat my comment from above:

The games i believe joao pinheiro will officiate one of them
ReplyDeleteFrance vs senegal
Holland vs japan
Argentine vs algeria
England vs croatia
I guess Brazil - Haiti or Uruguay - Cape Verde
DeleteNeither Brazil nor Cape Verde seem like favorable assignments for him, as Portuguese is the official language in both countries. Generally not a problem, given the multitude of non-UEFA games, I would, however, avoid them.
DeleteUruguay - Cape Verde could be a very difficult match. I expect an extremely battle-tested referee there, no offense to Mister Pinheiro. Elfath or Barton would be a good option.
DeleteMore likely Curacao v. Ivory Coast or DR Congo v. Uzbekistan.
DeleteFor Pinheiro, imo also possible
DeleteSAUD-URU or
CDA-ECU
Good choices so far! Sampaio and Vincic with medium difficult matches, Tello and Ghorbal maybe with soft and sleep for their abilities, but as this tournment has a lot of matches can be an initial criterion
ReplyDeleteSo for Sunday:
ReplyDeleteGER-CUW: Probably a low-profile AFC or CAF referee. My pick: Jayed; second choice: Makhadmeh
NED-JAP: Either CONMEBOL or one of the top CONCACAF referees. My pick: Abatti, second choice: Ramos
CIV-ECU: Important and probably challenging game, however I think, every UEFA referee should be able to handle it. My pick: Pinheiro, second choice: Mariani
SWE-TUN: Another chance for the first AFC appointment (but more options, of course). My pick: Tantashev, second choice: Tejera
Good choices 😄
DeleteMy vision:
DeleteGermany-Curacao:Makhadmeh
Netherlands-Japan:Barton
IvoryCoast–Ecuador:Mariani
Sweden – Tunisia:Fischer
I’m sorry but this is out of control! I’m now being called a person that commits hate speech. This really is disturbing. If I have committed any sort of hate speech I must only apologise.
ReplyDeleteChill, bro. The same troll users appear here always during important tournaments. That's exactly why Mikael opened this Telegram group - the atmosphere on the blogger is going to be unbearable and admins have absolutely no tools to fight against trolls.
DeleteDespite we are just at the very beginning of this World Cup, which I am not really enthusiastic about compared to previous editions, I want to try to make an assessment about the candidates for the latter games in the knockout rounds.
ReplyDeleteObviously, it is always possible that referees who might not seem like candidates for big games in the knockout rounds before the tournament show great performances and are rewarded with a major game. For example, I would not rule out the possibility that younger officials like Falcon or Makhadmeh can make a deep run if they perform well just like Barton in 2022 or Ramos in 2018.
But looking at the “biggest” names, I believe that Alireza Faghani can be quite certain that he will have a major game in the knockout rounds. Nevertheless, I think that he won’t be the referee in the final. His officiating in the CWC final was very poor and I believe that Colinna and Busacca both are aware that his experience can be very useful but doesn’t prevent another final like Chelsea-Paris. So, I think that they will shield him in the group stage in order to appoint him for a UEFA – CONMEBOL clash later in the tournament (e. g. the possible Argentina – Portugal) but won’t give him the final.
Regarding the other referees from AFC, I think that aforementioned Makhadmeh and Tantashev are fighting for being the no. 2 behind Faghani. Both should have chances for an appointment in the knockout stage while al-Jassim should not be considered for knockout games after his poor officiating in Croatia-Marocco. But honestly it seems quite likely that his strong passport might give him the possibility to referee in another knockout game.
Moving on to CAF, I would argue that there are two clear favourites for big appointments, namely Ghorbal and Beida. Imo, both are talented referees and both should get better games than the ones CAF referees deservedly handled in Quatar. Since I don’t know that much about the other referees from CAF (even though Mikael’s brilliant analysis taught me several interesting aspects), I will just say that two referees in the knockout round seems likely for CAF.
Switching to CONCACAF, I believe that the level of officiating there has improved a lot since Rizzoli took over. All of their referees should be candidates for knockout games in the case of decent performances. However, I am quite certain that only Elfath, Ramos and Barton have chances to officiate the biggest clashes.
Ramos was rightly criticised for his handling of Boca-Benfica on this blog. Nevertheless, I believe that he can be a very good referee if he decides not to be the personification of leniency. This is going to be his third WC and he already had three knockout games including one semifinal. I would even not rule him out for the final, even though he is clearly not the favourite.
In my eyes, the favourite is Elfath. He comes from the host nation and is a good referee who definitely improved since the last WC. This is why I believe he will be shielded from difficult games (like Turpin in 2022), so that he can receive the final. But even though such an appointment may seem like a political one, this should not hide the fact that he is an adequate referee for the final.
Finally, a referee I personally like a lot is Barton. The first match I saw from him was Germany-Japan in Quatar and he impressed me with his technical accuracy which is nothing but outstanding. I think he is too young for the final itself, but I consider him as a good option for a big game between two UEFA teams (e. g. Germany – France). And if this WC goes well for him, he should be the no. 1 candidate for the final in 2030.
Interestingly, the top three referees in CONMEBOL, namely Wilton Sampaio, Jesus Valenzuela and Facundo Tello have not changed since Qatar, and I think that all of them could officiate the biggest matches at this WC.
DeleteA referee who receives the opener always enjoys FIFA’s trust. Wilton Sampaio is a referee whose style I personally dislike since he does not really care about managing the game imo. Nevertheless, I have to admit that he is able to solve technically challenging matches and is certainly a good referee. That’s why I am quite certain that he will be at least able to achieve a quarterfinal if he doesn’t perform very poorly before. In case of a good performance in the knockout stage, he should always be considered as a possibility for the final.
Facundo Tello also received one of the opening games. It is quite clear that he will not referee the final (three Argentine final referees in 20 years is too much), but he seems to be a safe bet for the knockout stage. I think that he might be appointed to a big match between two UEFA teams since his style is rather “European”.
If you ask me, the no. 3 from CONMEBOL behind Sampaio and Tello is Jesus Valenzuela. I believe him to be the personification of FIFA’s vision of refereeing as he is very concentrated on managing (opposite to Sampaio). He performed well in Qatar and I am quite certain that he will go even further this time. I am not sure if he could make it to the final if Elfath and Sampaio both perform badly, but he should have a good chance to achieve at least a quarterfinal.
Finally, let’s have a look on the UEFA officials. First of all, I want to say that all of them are great referees which are capable of handling even difficult matches at this tournament. So, I believe that all of them have the chance to qualify for the knockout stage with decent performances. Before the tournament, I would argue that the strongest names are Marciniak (obviously), Turpin and Letexier. But again, I think that almost every UEFA official at this tournament has good chances to referee a huge clash. However, at this moment I could imagine that additionally to the names mentioned above Oliver, Makkelie and Mariani (coming from a very strong Conference League final) are candidates for the biggest games.
Anyway, I don’t think that we are going to see two UEFA referees in a row for the final. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this has not happened in the modern era?
This is the first time that I write such an analysis, I hope you enjoyed reading it (even though my English is sometimes a bit difficult to understand). Feel free to add, discuss or question aspects. And let’s hope that the referees will have a great World Cup despite all these negatives events!
Thanks! I think the candidates for the final are:
DeleteCONMEBOL: Sampaio and Valenzuela
Both can handle the most difficult games in a great manner that suits FIFA! Absolutely top class from both and it will be no surprise to me to see any of them in the final game.
CONCACAF: Elfath and Ramos
While I really dislike the Mexican's leniency, FIFA seem to rate him high (as almost all veterans). Elfath seems to be the obvious choice that most likely will be shielded a little bit by appointments strategy and the rest will be in his hands.
My personal preference between these candidates is:
1. Valenzuela
2. Sampaio
3. Elfath
4. Ramos
I also don't think we'll see a UEFA referee in the final this year. Faghani? Well, he got the CWC final and his form is far, far from his optimal.
Correct me if I’m mistaken but I think Jesús Valenzuela would be an excellent candidate for the final and I believe that he is very well thought of by Collina.
DeleteWhen it's about the final, we should wait for the real performances on the pitch. But sure there are tendencies even before and talking about them, don't forget Barton, who really did well last year. And if the Egyptian ref performs well again, he might be a candidate, too. I do not believe that we will get a UEFA referee in the final again, and - I am sad to say that - Faghani imo does not really show his old level anymore. In Asia I do not see a candidate already - but let's wait for the real games now and hope for some positive surprises.
DeleteUEFA had back-to-back final referees with Webb and Rizzoli in 2010 and 2014.
DeleteBrazilian here. Sampaio is really bad at refereeing here in South America. Terrible players and emotional control/management. I hope he'll do well.
ReplyDeleteI don't like Vincic for the same reason, and this Brazil vs Morocco could be a little bit heated.
"It's not a World Cup if you don't allow the world to come in."
ReplyDelete- Christina Unkel (Former FIFA Referee, USA)
"Speaking to Football Insider, Keith Hackett (former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee) commented on the issue and urged FIFA to make the correct decision and pay Artan and his family a sum of $100,000. "This appears to be so unfair, depriving a young referee of the opportunity to officiate at a World Cup. The pathway to the top is incredibly difficult, and this referee has developed a career that has seen him meet the challenges and rise to the elite level."
Dear friends, even if I follow the criticism on US government and FIFA and I had good reasons for my last words about that - I really think that we should not work on continuing discussing things in a way that Artan is made a hero. He is a still very promising young referee who was treated completely unfairly and should get a fair compensation, but that's it. There are more possibilities and tournaments lying ahead of him in future. And I hope that he knows that some journalists who pretend to be on his side might try to use him for their own agenda, which would not be in his interest. My advice for him would be to relax, enjoy some TV shows, but then focus on continuing his good work on the pitch.

Well after 28 years, Scotland will return to the top stage and it’s Mustapha from Algeria who will referee this vital match for both nations (Haiti), and I must say this technically decides 3rd already and could give Scotland a chance at a knockout round for the first time ever, and Haiti a first win ever. So I understand why some might consider this a “poor” or “okish” appointment but for these two countries this is a match that could change lives which isn’t unusual at World Cups, but for me it’s special due to obvious reasons! Good luck Mustapha and I pray all goes well.
ReplyDeleteVery good comment. What might look like a game like many others for most of us, means a world to those involved. But that is so in general and when we stand on the pitch the "lower leagues" deserve the same dedication and professionalism as the "high class clashes" do...
DeleteVery true Andrasch.
Delete+1 to all
DeleteOT: Infantino finally “comments” on the scandal:- “It’s unfortunate what happened to Omar. But again, we don't control everything. We try, we discuss, we see. Maybe it's good to just chill, relax.
ReplyDelete“We try to solve everything. Sometimes screaming and shouting has the opposite effect. Don't believe me if you don't want but we always try to find solutions. We are not the kings of the world.” Lol what a joke. Just amazing.
I am trying to look at this issue objectively: Perhaps there really are the alleged latent security concerns with Omar Artan. Content-wise, I can also fundamentally understand the statement that one would not want to see football and national rule-of-law matters mixed. However, at the latest, the flippant comment 'Maybe it's good to just chill, relax.' disqualifies the FIFA president anyway!
DeleteMy intention here is just comment about referees but as this topic was raised my opinion that Infantino is a disgrace to football, not only by this tragedy to change WC in their own business balcony but He knows that both in 2010 in South Africa and in 2014 in Brazil, FIFA imposed its will by force a set of absurd conditions, contradicting constitutions and local laws to protect sponsors, corrupt individuals, and criminal partners (guaranteeing entry and protection to some involved even in sex tourism scandals), even demanding the creation of specific laws and the repeal of others so that the tournament could take place. He is either a liar or has forgotten what this corrupt entity has already done to the countries that hosted the World Cup. The problem is that in its power struggles with Trump's USA, it has become a disqualified puppet.
DeleteRob Dieperink out of WC
ReplyDelete*1.* FIFA removed Dutch VAR Rob Dieperink from the 2026 World Cup roster after his arrest in London over suspected sexual assault of a minor, even though the case was later dropped with no charges.
*2.* Dieperink and the Dutch FA KNVB expressed disappointment and support, saying he fully cooperated and should still be allowed to officiate domestic games
*3.* French referee Willy Delajod replaces him as VAR. The move shows FIFA prioritizing the competition’s image over legal outcomes.

For final my predictions are:
ReplyDelete- CONMEBOL: Claus more efficient and reliable than Sampaio in discipline, fouls appointments, clear signaling and match control. Tello is a great referee but I dont believe in other argentinean in finals
- UEFA: Turpin as reward by your exceptional performance in 2022 where probably he would was in final unless France also not be. Or Makkelie due your recent great performances.
Isn't Claus supposed to work only as fourth official? I thought the two Brazilian head referees were Sampaio and Abatti. 🤔
DeleteNot really, because Claus has a superior performance than Sampaio and Abatti in Conmebol tournments (Libertadores and Sudamericana).
DeleteThat doesn’t really matter, at the end Abatti and Sampaio were selected as main referees and it’s obvius that FIFA rate them higher than Claus. Perhaps he could get a MD3 game.
DeleteNot really existential, but: Is 'Mohamed' actually the family name in 'Amin Mohamed Omar'? I would have thought that 'Amin Mohamed' are his first names and 'Omar' his last name.

Omar Artan will be the referee for the supercup between PSG and Aston Villa. Official announced by UEFA
ReplyDeleteBREAKING: ARTAN APPOINTED TO UEFA SUPER CUP
ReplyDeleteSOURCE: UEFA on instagram
Comical appointment, but it just highlights the schism between FIFA and UEFA, where the latter prefers to win PR points than give their own confederation's referees valuable final experience.
DeleteObviously good for Artan, a small consolation.
Good appointment for Elfath, other three can be said expected profile of referees for those games.
ReplyDeleteWow how beautiful football can be with Artan appointed for the European Supercup!
ReplyDeleteElfath and his team with Katia Garcia as 4th is interesting.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteSo the trend of not appointing AFC referees continues since the end of MD2 in 2022... (with the exception of the 3rd place game, I know)
ReplyDeleteOn contrary, third game already for CAF.
Besides that, the Sunday appointments are quite normal and adequate for the referee's levels.
Worth pointing out that the 4th officials apparently don't stay at one venue (but at least in the same region for now).
Congratulation for uefa for this appoinments that supports the oppressed

DeleteReal home game for Elfath in Texas.
ReplyDeleteLet's see whether the other three host referees will get something similar.
GREAT response by UEFA; the appointment of Artan as official of the Super Cup between PSG and Aston Villa is a wonderful gesture. and well deserved. Well done Rosetti !!! My appreciation
ReplyDeleteRegular assignments for Elfath, Oliver and Falcon.
ReplyDeleteWhile once again, I must underline that after Haiti, CAF gets Curaçao as well, very predictable assignments, always CAF referees for the weakest (on paper) teams. Nevertheless, three appointments for African referees and zero for Asian is remarkable.
But maybe Faghani will start directly in a top game...
Confederations (unwritten) rule always kept, including fourth officials, unless Hernandez Hernandez in that game.
France vs Senegal high likely for Faghani, Spain vs Cape Verde may be officiated by AFC ref as well (or maybe Penso)
DeleteIvory Coast vs Ecuador ( Michael Oliver) This is far from an easy assignment for Michael Oliver. It promises to be a physical contest with plenty of challenges and potentially several cards. Both teams play with passion and intensity with less ball playing more on physical contact.
ReplyDeleteEither A top class performance from Oliver or disaster one. This is most difficult fixture of the first round.

DeleteMariani: good for Uruguay, but clearly Saudi Arabia shows that he is below other UEFA referees, and that's fair for now as first assignment.
ReplyDeleteThe Jordan referee in Charge of Cape Verde, another team to add to the list with Haiti and Curaçao (personal opinion, of course).
It's the AFC refereeing debut, the reputation is not that high as we can see so far, definitely CAF better at moment.
A pleasure for me to see Abatti, I liked him in previous FIFA tournaments, and maybe it's not an exaggeration to say that he could handle a better tournament than the countryman.
It's a good clash, European team against one of the strongest CAF representatives.
And then Ramos, experienced referee for FIFA, one can dislike him but he has long experience at moment and he comes from a host country: he is there not for NZL but for IRN.
In my opinion this was a specific choice to give something more to Iran, otherwise a less experienced referee from another confederation could have been possible.
Cesar Ramos returns and hopefully this is a path towards World Cup glory.
ReplyDeleteI was expecting a UEFA referee in Iran vs New Zeeland. There are many referees and few available games for them, while I expect that almost all of them will have at least 2 games. This was a suitable game for many names.
ReplyDeleteIf you wanted to assign UEFA referees exclusively to purely non-UEFA matches, you would have to give them - with only one exception - all of them! In practice, however, FIFA also uses them for purely UEFA duels and, conversely, 'minor' non-UEFA referees for 'minor' non-UEFA matches. Iran vs. New Zealand, for example, would have been such a match where you could have expected a lower-profile referee than César Ramos.

Did Wilton Sampaio really say "serious foul play" instead of "violent conduct" for the second red? I thought I was the only one who heard that, but then I saw a meme video of him speaking and realized he actually did say it. It has to be a language slip-up, right? Otherwise, it doesn't make much sense.
ReplyDeleteI think that despite specific situation regarding Iran team, this appointment is below expected for Ramos.
ReplyDeleteI checked briefly out of curiosity, I don't think Sampaio had any OFR at CWC last year.
ReplyDeleteHe had one in the qualification playoff between LAFC and Club America, but maybe that's not to be counted as part of the tournament

ReplyDelete"Appointment change: Due to a minor injury, referee Michael Oliver (ENG) has been replaced by Francois Letexier (FRA). Oliver is expected to be available for selection again in the coming days."
Guzman for Valenzuela seems a bit strange, because she already works tonight and there would be Soto (and other CONMEBOL VARs) also available. Also Fu there as only non-Hispanic seems unneccessary.
ReplyDeleteDankert for Vincic could be expected after some CL appointments together.
Pacheco and Alshehri are logical appointments due to the language.
Sorry for Oliver. Hope will recover very quickly and just swap matches with Letexier, nothing more than that
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that FIFA makes the reason public and reports the detail "minor injury". Maybe it's just a precaution and nothing more. We will see Oliver soon.
