DeleteActually he got clearly hit before he fell but it can never be a penalty based on the atmoshphere. But clear contact then he fell then contact again. Look and you will se from the behind angle.

That was for big disscusion, was it diving or normal contact.
Now, when he had clear diving, he didin't react. The referee put himself in trouble.

ReplyDeleteI agree, I think after the 70' onwards after he showed all those cards the players have been better behaved and Geiger has been more in control.
DeleteNoticed he used his spray there as England gained a few yards with the free kick position. Should've done that in the first half as that was contributing to Colombia delaying the restarts.

ReplyDeleteNotice how much the match has calmed down considerably and the dirty play has decreased since the flurry of yellow cards between minutes 50 and 70... if Geiger had gone to the pocket earlier maybe it would have helped him. Why he didn't go to the pocket, for the leniency the committee wants or for some other reason, we may never know.

DeleteI said in the earlier thread that Geiger is best at using his cards to control the game. In my opinion he felt the urge to keep the cards in his pocket during the first half on account of the wishes for leniency by the committee. I think these directives disarmed him of his best tool, but I wish he was better at finding alternative methods of controlling a match.

DeleteWell this match wraps up the participation for my confederation (CONCACAF). All of our teams have been eliminated and after this match our referee's will be done also. Even though I highly doubt it and to be honest he doesn't deserve it. But I wouldn't mind seeing Ramos get another assignment. One can always dream Lol :D

Soham, you can't reward mediocrity. It would be an injustice to those referee's who have done it right in each of their matches.
DeleteAt this point I don't see him in another game, but who knows? This would have been a very difficult match for ANY referee, and maybe the committee will give a lot of value to that.

DeleteAs I said before. This match marks the end for CONCACAF. I'd be more than ecstatic to see Ramos(he deserves it more than Geiger) again. But I know that it's not going to happen. Too many other referee's have been better in each and every one of their matches.

DeleteThen the AR should have maintained his focus on the pitch. He's an AR not a ball boy. Do your job and maintain focus. If he doesn't do his ball boy impression. The ball rolls onto the pitch and Geiger is able to sell the call much better.

I feel sorry for Mr Geiger. Refereeing a WC R16 is a dream come true. And he knows already that there will be heavy criticism from media, fans and more importantly, from whatever team that loses tonight. Dream became nightmare. Hopefully the last 15 minutes will be an easier journey than the first 105 minutes.

DeleteI don't see that Chigozie Iheanacho ever said that Geiger should get a final so Soham your comment is totaly wrong and not in place (Chefren once warned you that you have to be more respectful to other comentators on this blog). But Chigozie is right, no crucial mistakes by Geiger. Poor management and control, but no crucial mistakes. After this match, I am sure Kuipers will be the one for the final. Second Europa League final proved that Collina trust him very much, and Collina will take no risk in final.

DeleteI'm not sur about that, but I would rate him on par with every other top referee so far. He has had one of the most difficult matches so far where some of the others have had easy matches by comparison. I would guess the controversy will rule him out.

DeleteI want to hear your opinions guys regarding this question: it's been clear that both teams did not respect Geiger's authority from the start of this game, with no acceptance in the first half. Why do you think this is? What could he have done done differently to have more authority early on? I always see comments here like "he doesn't show enough personality" but what specifically do you guys mean by that?
ReplyDeleteHe doesn't have a natural authority or personality that will draw out players' acceptance or respect. Pitana is someone whose physical build forces players to respect him. Kuipers and Cakir are referees who with strong personalities and their calmness win over players' acceptance. Geiger basically has none of that!

There is not a single referee that has made a 100% correct game in the WC (so far). Bottom line, no referee has made the critical mistake that has changed the outcome of the game.
